difficulty on setting up my proxy

2024.05.15 13:07 Golf-Big difficulty on setting up my proxy

hi, I'm new to ethical hacking and english is my second language (sorry for any grammar errors). I'm having a problem connecting to a proxy server, I'm using Kali Linux and proxychains. I did all the setup on the proxychains4.conf, I enabled dynamic proxy and proxy DNS, I've put various proxy IPs and tested them to see if they were working, when i tried to run "proxychains firefox google.com" the text on the terminal said that the IP was denied. I've already tried using tor and it didn't work. so quoting the famous beetle song "Help I need somebody, Help"

2024.04.20 23:29 Keag034 Best practice for importing Japanese Beetles?

Trying to get some Blue-Purple Metallifer Stag beetles. Ordered from Richard's Inverts a while back (UK to California) and had customs confiscate them. Lucanidae are perfectly legal here too. Since then I've found a few Yahoo Japan auctions for them and I'm going to use a proxy to get them over here. Any tips to ensure i get them? What's the best label/title for customs?

2024.04.18 02:59 AlanShore60607 Using The Phantom (1996) to launch another superhero universe now, King Features Syndicate.

So The Phantom was exactly what it meant to be ... a fun retro romp in the spirit of Indiana Jones and Errol Flynn. Set in 1938, it established the mythos well, and set up a potential child to carry on the legacy from father to son.
And the 1986 cartoon Defenders of the Earth already did a King Features crossover universe as animated, but that was really a Flash Gordon team show more than anything else.
Well, this 1996 movie is now coming up on 30 years old, which is pretty much a proper time for something based on that son while still including Billy Zane as the father.
Set in 1968, Kit Walker's son Kyle Walker has been the Phantom for 5 years now while his father is gracefully pushing 60 years old and enjoying his retirement in Mod London with Diana, and setting up logistics to support his son in the service of MI-6 under agent X-9 (basically a comic version of Bond created by the great Dashiell Hammett in the 1940s). Getting Pierce Brosnan to play such a senior spy would be awesome, but I'd settle for Timothy Dalton.
The first film should try to hit the following points:
  1. A strange conspiracy surrounding fantastical weapons being smuggled to the soviets out of the Congo
  2. The disappearance of Kyle Walker, pulling a still healthy Kit out of retirement to do a "too old for this shit" adventure into the jungle with X-9.
  3. The discovery of Prince Thun (Flash Gordon character) in the jungle, as a prisoner of those smuggling the energy weapons.
  4. After rescuing Prince Thun, who has translator tech so he can communicate, Thun tells them everything. That this portal is to Mongo, from where their emperor Ming spreads his influence across planets via like-minded proxies, in this case, the Soviets. Currently, 20 planets suffer under his reign, and Thun is part of the resistance.
  5. They manage to shut down the portal, but Thun is trapped on Earth.
  6. Kyle Walker awakens on Mongo in a cell.
So victory, plus a setup.
The 2nd film would start with war correspondent Dale Arden bringing these same high-tech weapons to Dr. Zarkov for analysis, who quickly confirms they are not of Earth design or materials, despite it looking exactly like an AK-47, as it shoots energy bolts. The weapon was found in Vietnam on the battlefield by Warrant Officer Alex Gordon (callsign Flash, helicopter pilot) of the US Army, as one of the few survivors of an assault on a forward airbase. She was embedded with his unit and saw the horrors that this weapon wrought upon the base and the team there, with only a half dozen men taking out almost the entire base of personnel. Only Gordon and Pvt. Bailey (yes, Beetle Bailey, just a wink) survived as they got to a helicopter to gain air superiority over the 6 men.
This film will be Arden and Zarkov trying to track down the source of the weapons, and X-9 will get wind of what they're doing and find them.
X-9 will realize that this is a completely new weapon ... no longer looking alien like all the weapons from the pipeline they previously shut down, and leading them to search for the new weapons pipeline. The problem is that every aspect of the pipeline is behind enemy lines, somewhere in Asia, as interplanetary portals don't need physical infrastructure.
X-9 has an idea. An old friend named Mandrake who has previously helped with non-physical threats. Mandrake's mystical powers should be capable of finding the portal, which is located in Cambodia. But he's hesitant to tell US authorities about this, as he's afraid of how these extraterrestrial weapons could change the power dynamics on Earth. So he pulls together a small team, Phantom, Thun, Mandrake, Zarkov, and Arden, to shut down the Cambodian portal in a war zone.
This does not go as planned. Mandrake's powers go haywire in the presence of the portal, rendering him not only useless but in need of medical attention. They have to go in close, and find themselves facing a squad of winged men who have an obvious tactical superiority over them, but using weapons from Mongo the earth team holds their own for a while, until another squad arrives from Mongo, but this time it's Thun's people.
Upon seeing this, Prince Thun rises from cover and roars to his people, and tells them that the resistance is here and now, and to lay down their arms.
They shut down the portal, and Thun's people tell the hawk people to stand down as well, but they refuse as King Vultan has sworn allegiance to the Emperor, and they fight to the last.
Having shut down the portal, Zarkov can finally get to work. He determines the mechanism was obviously brought here from off-world, and Phantom tracks it back to a ship landed in the Cambodian jungle. Zarkov starts to figure out how it works, and learns that it can portal to any planet within the Empire by creating a tesseract and folding space so that the points are adjacent.
So now they have alien weapons, a portal, and a spaceship that appears to have some sort of tesseract drive for long distance travel, which basically creates a portal right in front of the ship for it to fly through.
And a decision is made by the group. They will take the fight to Ming on Mongo, by strengthening the resistance at first, until they can figure out how to do something better.
Close on a reminder that Kyle Walker is still on Mongo, sharing a cell with Prince Barin.
Third film: Finally, a Flash Gordon movie.
Agent X-9 gets Alex Gordon assigned as their Army advisor by General Halftrack (yeah, another Beetle Bailey reference, I'd say sue me but it's the same IP holder). They need to keep the circle tight for now, and Gordon knows something is up.
The team will first go to Thun's world as a launching point, as they have a small squad of his men with them and the humans can be passed off as prisoners. The decision is made to go by portal while one of Thun's men stays behind to teach humans how to use the ship.
The team is Gordon, Zarkov, Arden, and Kit Walker. X-9 stays behind to coordinate, and Mandrake won't go as he's unsure how portal travel will impact him, or if his magics will work on other worlds.
The arrive and learn their "prisoner" deception was unnecessary. Thun's world is decimated, likely in response to his acts of rebellion. The skies are filled with King Voltan's armies that are loyal to Ming, and they quickly realize that there is nothing to be gained by staying on Thun's planet. They quickly turn around and reset the portal to Earth to regroup and come up with a new plan, but they are noticed and damage from the battle changes the settings to Ming's court, where they are immediately surrounded.
They are brought before Princess Aura, who summarily executes all of Thun's men to punish him for his rebellion. And then, she notices the man in the purple suit, and said she has another one just like him in the dungeon who has been quite troublesome for them. It's at this point that Phantom learns his son is on Mongo, to which he demands to see his son. Which she obliges by putting them all in the dungeon for later interrogation.
Barin and Thun, the leaders of two resistance movements, finally meet in the dungeon. Both of their kingdoms are decimated, and they have nothing to fight for but revenge. The Phantoms are reunited, but they have no hope as they have no way to escape.
At which point, Dale produces her concealed derringer that the weapon scanner missed as it's not an energy weapon. It's only 2 shots, but it's something to start with. She gives it to Flash, and they manage to break out and steal a small drop ship, which Gordon notes has a very similar layout to the helicopters he flies.
And that's when Zarkov starts to put it together. Ming has been grooming Earth since the 1300s, (Ming Dynasty, anyone?) pushing their development along by encouraging conflict and slipping in technological advances. Mongo has been heading towards environmental disaster for centuries, and Ming long ago identified that Earth was the perfect planet to replace Mongo, but it was too populated, so he encouraged wars to weaken the planet, but the humans were just to willing to set down arms and make peace for that plan to ever work. Mongo has less than 20 years left, and the energy weapons are the tool to accelerate the slaughter, as the nations of Earth have chosen not to use the nuclear weapons to obliterate the populations. Humans breed faster than anticipated, and are depleting the resources he wanted the planet for, so a mass extinction event that does not destroy the environment is what Ming needs.
A decision needs to be made; do they find a way to return to Earth to warn them, or do they try to stop the threat here on Mongo? Well, they actually make the rational decision to run home and warn Earth as they're just a handful of people; while Barin and Thun previously had armies, those are gone now. The 7 of them against a planet when they have no strategy, they all agree, means telling Earth is more important.
Their plan is as basic as can be; use the drop ship to fly into one of Ming's ports and steal a jump ship to return to Earth, with Thun and Barin. Just land as close to a ship as they can and make a run for it. This simple plan, of course, meets with resistance as they are spotted and start taking fire. Kit Walker holds his ground to defend the others and dies in battle defending them as they rush into the ship, only to be confronted by Imperial Guards.
While they manage to take out the guards, they discover that the ship they are trying to steal is Princess Aura's royal yacht, and she is aboard. They take her prisoner and jump back to Earth.
Cut to a military briefing room, with everyone there except Kyle Walker. They are briefing Gen. Halftrack, who has no choice to believe them as Thun is there, as well as several alien prisoners who were the Imperial guards from several different species.
But the next day, Halftrack tell him that he has orders to not act on this. Apparently, the US has been getting advancements from Ming's people all along, just like everyone else, and they don't want to give up the advantages they are being given. In fact, he has orders to return Princess Aura to Mongo via the portal in Chicago, left over from the Manhattan project.
Gen. Halftrack then gives Gordon an honorable discharge with a wink and tells him that he can't tell civilians not to fight back against Mongo.
That's the first 3, I think.

2024.01.10 08:56 YourGuyElias Psi slots make psi inherently less fun.

Don't get me wrong, even on Dominating it's still ABSURDLY fucking easy to finish the game as a pure Psi. Quad school psychosis along with TM+PK Monk usually end up being my go to picks whenever I just wanna relax and have fun.
Running three schools and even four schools becomes pretty negligible to a point after you get deep enough into feats and crafting anyways, which you might as well get into since you're going to have decent INT not only for slots but at a minimum, you want to grab premed. With a psi beetle carapace decreasing psi ability cost by 10%, a psionic headband with mufflers decreasing it by ~25% on average and that one feat that basically negates the psi cost of having one more school, you're not exactly going to be hurting for psi-points, especially when everything dies in one go with pre-med.
It just kind of sucks that you don't get to actually fuck around with the new and less-than-optimal psi abilities unless you're a hybrid.
Even if we're running with the idea that you've got a full 9 slots, the highest feasible amount of slots you can really have with the game still being playable, let's look at the genuine must-picks for any pure psi-build.
Limited Temporal Increment is just a no-brainer. Depending on your TM ability and feats, Psycho-temporal contraction and precognition are also relatively no-brainers.
If we're talking AOE damage, you're either running Plasma Beam, Cryokinetic Orb, Pyrokinesis, LoC thought control and at lower levels, Electrokinesis.
If we're talking bread and butter damage, the equivalent of just using attack like with a gun or melee weapon, we're looking at neural overload, cryokinesis or temporal distortion (If you hate your fucking life).
If we're talking about CC, then electrokinesis, telekinetic grounding (Kind of), cryogenic barrier (kind of) and LoC thought control really only work.
Then for basic survivability stuff, you might be running Stasis, Pseudo-spatial projection and Exothermic Aura for running away.
Do you see the issue here? We've got 15 psi abilities that are basically must-picks every time when there are 36 abilities that a pure psi are going to use, since force emission and psychosomatic predation doesn't really play a role in a psi user's deck.
Of course, even if we discount abilities that frankly, are just straight up ass and don't really need to be used, ignoring temporary rewind, motor-cognitive transference, cryostasis (Frankly, the cooldown and cost of the skill is far too high to really justify its usage), psychokinetic chain, telekinetic proxy (There is literally no reason to use this ability over plasma beam) and so on we're looking at around 30 abilities that a psi user is going to be interested in using, with all of them being fun to use or fuck around with, 15 or so being optimal and at best 9 slots to toy with.
With a lack of psi presets, and frankly QoL is something that matters when it comes to whether or not somebody will utilize a certain feature. If you had to choose between 15 different kinds of grenades, I'm certain throwing would not at all be as popular as it is. The economy of Dominating us discouraging you from constantly innervating new abilities when you can more than easily make do with 9 optimal abilities simply already innervated.
What this means though is that there's a lack of means to fuck around. Bilocation, Thermodynamic Destabilization, Cryo Shield, Electrokinetic Imprint, Force Field, Psi-cognitive Interruption, Neurovisual Disruption, Enrage, Entropic Recurrence and so on are all very fun to toy with, but there's little to no point in actually running these when better options exist.
TL;DR: Just get rid of the slots and have casting abilities of different schools result in a cumulative percentage increase of psi cost per encounter brah....................

2023.12.29 23:53 The-Aluminum-Man So you want to buy a white box?

It was requested that I turn my comment on Glad-Ad's post into its own post. I think that might be a good way to maximize the value this has for players as well. This post is a summary of all the currently available white box expansions. I love white boxes. I'm kind of obsessed with small gameplay additions that add interesting and niche gear and events to the game, but some people don't see white boxes as having a good cost-value proposition, which is true. White boxes are not a good value if you're exclusively after gameplay content, but I'll list out each white box, what it contains, and its MSRP in USD (I pulled these off of kdm-collector, so some prices may not accurately reflect recent price increases), and let you, as a player, decide if the contents of the box justifies the cost of the box when considering what to make as your next Kingdom Death purchase. What is a white box though? If you've just recently joined the community, it's kind of lost a lot of its original context, but all of the early "micro expansions" (Fade, White Speaker, Before the Wall, etc.) came packaged in a small white box, thus the name. Nowadays I use white box as a term on the wiki to describe pretty much any plastic release that includes meaningful gameplay content, be it a pinup collection, a holiday release, or a plastic release that is more tonally serious. Here is the list of white box expansions:
10th Anniversary Survivors - $60
Released on the 10th anniversary of Kingdom Death, this set includes 4 player's scale miniatures of the starting survivors, 6 seed pattern cards (Tempered Dagger, Tempered Spear, Plated Shield, Tempered Axe, Vault Key Earrings, and Telcric Eye Tac), and 8 corresponding seed pattern gear cards (Tempered Dagger and Tempered Axe have 2 copies each). These seed pattern cards, were just patterns at the time of the release, but were intended to showoff the new system introduced officially in the Gambler's Chest Expansion. The 10th Anniversary Survivors white box was last seen during the 2021 December sale, so it is likely that they receive encore reprints in the near future.
10th Anniversary White Speakers - $30
Released alongside the 10th anniversary survivors, this set includes a White Speaker player's scale miniature, the Plot Twist strain milestone card, and 4 strain fighting art cards (Story of Blood 1 through 4). These 4 strain fighting art level up in the same way that knowledge cards do in the GCE. Based on early update pictures where knowledges were a type of FA, these cards are were also meant to represent a new system introduced in the GCE. As far as I can tell, the 10th Anniversary White Speaker white box has not been available in the past few years, so may be unlikely to get a reprint in its current incarnation (perhaps the Fighting Arts will be changed to Knowledge cards?).
Allison the Twilight Knight - $25
An OG white box. It contains one player's scale miniature (old scale) of Allison and the Tattered Parcel sticker that modifies the Hooded Knight story event in the core game rulebook. With the sticker, players can gain 2 new rare gear cards: the Blue Lantern and the Dormant Twilight Cloak. While the Allison white box has been unavailable for a few year, the game play content is available in the Legendary Card Pack (which is currently in stock in the shop). Additionally, update #111 shows that Allison's miniature and gameplay content will be included in the upcoming Promos of Death box set.
Basara - $60
The newest white box as of this post (released Halloween 2023), Basara contains content that interfaces with the GCE alongside a painter scale miniature, and a player's scale miniature. The gameplay content includes the Concert settlement event (that has an opportunity for Harvester counterplay), the Soloist character card, and the Upstage Scarf seed pattern card and its corresponding seed pattern gear. It is recommended by the install guide that players use the content in conjunction with the Smog Singers quarry. As of this post Basara is available to purchase in the shop, and will likely continue to be available in the future.
Before the Wall - $25
One of the original white boxes, Before the Wall includes a player's scale miniature of Aya (old scale). The gameplay content is an uncraftable gear card with an undefined special rule called White Dragon Gauntlets and the Tabard recipe gear. Combining these gear cards with the gear cards found in Beyond the Wall white box allows you to gain the included Vagabond armor set card. Before the Wall has not been available for sometime and in my opinion is unlikely to receive an encore reprint.
Beyond the Wall - $25
One of the original white boxes. Beyond the Wall includes a player's scale diorama of Aya (old scale). The gameplay content includes 2 recipe gear cards: Cloth Leggings and Hard Breastplate that can be combined with the content in the Before the Wall white box. While Beyond the Wall has not been available for some time, the gear cards can be found in the Legendary Card Pack. Additionally, update #111 has shown that the Beyond the Wall miniature will be included in the Promos of Death set box with 2 new undisclosed seed pattern cards and their corresponding seed pattern gear cards (though these are likely to be seed patterns for Cloth Leggings and Hard Breastplate).
Death Crown Inheritor Aya - $60
Released during the 2023 Valentine's Day sale, Death Crown Inheritor Aya was intended to act as a kind of preview of the indomitable resources included in the GCE. This kit includes a miniature of Aya in both a painter's and player's scale, alongside the Eon Heart Legendary Phoenix AI card, Undying Heart strange resource card, and the pattern cards for the Heartstop Bow and Heartstop Arrows and their accompanying pattern gear cards. Released this year, Death Crown Inheritor Aya will likely be available next Valentine's Day sale, and into the future.
Devil Satan - $50
Devil Satan is a Halloween holiday release that included a painter's scale and player's scale miniature. The Hope Stealer rare gear card included modifies basic hunt event #85 in the core rulebook. The Devil Satan white box was available during Halloween 2023, so will likely be available during future Halloween sales.
Easter Aya - $60
Easter Aya is an Easter holiday release that contains a painter's scale mini and a player's scale mini. The card included is the Ancient Root rare gear that modifies the Black Harvest story event in the Dung Beetle Knight expansion. Easter Aya was available during the 2023 Easter sale, so will likely be available during future Easter sales.
Echoes of Death 1 - $60
The first of the bunch. Echoes of Death represents Generic line characters echoing into the world of Kingdom Death. This set includes 4 miniatures, 4 strain milestone cards (Ethereal Culture Strain, Gaint's Strain, Opportunist Strain, and Treppaning Strain), and 4 strain fighting art cards (Backstabber, Ethereal Pact, Giant's Blood, and Infinite Lives). The rules for strain milestones will be expanded upon in Campaigns of Death. As of this post EoD 1 is available to purchase in the shop.
Echoes of Death 2 - $60
Continues the trend from the last box. It contains 4 miniatures, 4 strain milestone cards (Hyper Cerebellum Strain, Marrow Transformation Strain, Memetic Symphony Strain, and Surgical Sight Strain) and 4 strain fighting arts (Convalescer, Infernal Rhythm, Rolling Gait, and Shielderang). As of this post EoD 2 is available to purchase in the shop.
Echoes of Death 3 - $75
More of the same. It contains 4 miniatures, 4 strain milestone cards (Ashen Claw Strain, Carnage Worms, Material Feedback Strain, and Sweat Stained Oath), 4 strain fighting arts (Armored Fist, Stockist, Dark Manifestation, and Sword Oath), and a special vermin resource card (Fiddler Crab Spider) that is only added to the vermin resource deck upon completing one of the strain milestones. As of this post EoD 3 is available to purchase in the shop.
Echoes of Death 4 - $75
The newest in the Echoes of Death line-up. 4 miniatures. 4 strain milestones (Colluded Birth, Lifebound Page Strain, Resolute Pillar Strain, and Snarling Amygdala Strain). 4 strain fighting arts (Cross Counter, Curse Conductor, Beginner's Luck, and Sieging Offense). As of this post EoD 4 is available to purchase in the shop.
Elgnirk, the Chaos Elf - $60
A Christmas holiday release. Elgnirk, the Chaos Elf includes a seasonal "holiday hunt chaos card" that allows you to encounter Elgnirk during the hunt phase, and gain a secret fighting art called Joyous. Elgnirk only comes as a painter's scale miniature, but it is used as a gameplay piece. As of this post the Elgnirk, the Chaos Elf white box is available to purchase in the shop.
Erza of Dedheim - $60
A Halloween holiday release. Erza of Dedheim includes a painter's scale mini, and a player's scale mini. As well as having some really neat lore, the kit also includes seed pattern cards for the Ghostlink Pumpking, Scythe of Doom, and Robes of Dedheim, as well as their corresponding seed pattern gear. Like some other white box kits, the seed pattern cards found in this kit do not match the finalized seed pattern card design found in the GCE. Erza of Dedheim was available to purchase during the 2023 Halloween sale, and will likely continue to be available during future Halloween sales.
Fade - $25
An OG white box that contains one player's scale mini (old scale), the Baby and the Sword basic hunt event card (that interacts with Harvester), and two rare gear cards; Newborn, and the Sword of Silence. I believe that Poots said in Bra Mithra's 2023 Gencon interview that Fade would be getting a reprint at some point, though if that would be in its current incarnation or some updated form is unclear. It was also stated during the Kickstarter pitch for the Red Witches (Update #28) expansion that they would interact with Fade, so I imagine a reprint would occur around the time of that expansion's release.
Halloween Ringtail Vixen - $50
A Halloween holiday release. This kit contains a player's scale miniature, and a painter's scale miniature along with 2 seed pattern cards and their corresponding seed pattern gear, Vixen Tail and Brazen Bat. These seed patterns do not match the design of the finalized seed pattern design found in the GCE. The Brazen Bat is one of two gear cards that uses the pumpkin symbol that has yet to be defined for a gameplay purpose, and the Vixen Tail gear card requires the bookmark event from the Ringtail Vixen white box to craft. This white box was available during Halloween 2023, and will likely continue to be available.
Halloween Special Pinup Twilight Knight - $26
This Halloween holiday release includes a player's scale miniature. It was originally released with a single recipe gear card for the Jack O' Lantern gear that could be crafted during the settlement phase. During the 2022 Halloween sale, this model was released but with an updated seed pattern gear card, unfortunately this was an accident, and the corresponding seed pattern to make the gear card has not been released (even during the 2023 Halloween sale). It has been stated by Team Death on discord that these cards will be included in the Legendary Card Pack II.
Halloween Survivor - Flower Knight Costume - $30
A small Halloween release consisting of a player's scale mini with a seed pattern card, and a seed pattern gear card for the Flower Knight Costume. The seed pattern card in this white box does not match the finalized seed pattern design found in the GCE. This white box was available during Halloween 2023 and will likely continue to be available.
Halloween Survivor - King Costume - $30
Like the Flower Knight Costume, King Costume includes a player's scale mini with a seed pattern card, and a seed pattern gear card for the King Costume. This white box was released on Halloween 2023 and will likely continue to be available.
Halloween Survivors Series II - $60
Similar to both the Flower Knight and King Costume white boxes, this set contains the 4 starting survivors in various quarry themed attire. You get 4 player's scale minis, 4 seed pattern cards, and 4 seed pattern gear; the Retching Costume, the Big Bite Costume, the Screaming Costume, and the Gold Cat Costume. The seed patterns in this set do not match the seed pattern cards that are available in the GCE. This white box was available during Halloween 2023 and will likely continue to be available.
Halloween White Speaker - $27
Halloween White Speaker was originally released as a stand alone kit with no gameplay content, but was re-released a few years ago with a single seed pattern card and its corresponding seed pattern gear card, the Black Ghost Dagger. In order to craft the Black Ghost Dagger players will require the Dung Beetle Knight expansion and the Slenderman expansion. The Black Ghost Dagger is interesting in that it interacts with the currently undefined "pumpkin monster" symbol. These cards do not match the final seed pattern design found in the GCE. It additionally features a single player's scale miniature. This white box was available during Halloween 2023 and will likely continue to be available.
Holiday White Speaker Nico - $35
This Christmas holiday release includes a player's scale miniature of the White Speaker Nico (she shows up in the Red Witches expansion). It also comes with a new settlement event, Story in the Snow, that rewards your play group if you haven't cheated during your campaign. The Story in the Snow settlement event card is available in the Legendary Card Pack. The mini will also be included in the Promos of Death box set (Update #111) with a pillar card for use with the systems laid out in Campaigns of Death, as well as the settlement event card. Players who have these models will also find the new pillar card in the Legendary Card Pack II. Holiday White Speaker Nico was not available during Christmas 2023 and is likely only avialable through Promos of Death in the future.
Lolowen - $60
The Lolowen white box was released during the 2023 Easter sale. It includes a painter's scale mini and a player's scale mini as well as a seed pattern card and seed pattern gear card for the Lagomorph Kanobo. Also included is The Hasty character card for use with (or without) the Character innovation found in the GCE. Released this year, Lolowen will likely be available over the coming years.
Indomitable Survivor Longclaw Lenore - $30
Longclaw Lenore was released during the August 2023 post Gencon sale. The white box includes a new pattern card and its corresponding patter card, as well as an indomitable resource for the White Lion. Indomitable resources are a new mechanic that was introduced in the GCE. Releasing this year, Longclaw Lenore will likely be available periodically as it is restocked.
Lunar Twilight Knight - $60
Released during the Valentine's Day sale of 2023, Lunar Twilight Knight includes a painter's scale mini, and a player's scale mini. Also included is the new basic hunt event, Exquisite Aroma, and a rare gear card, Fish of Abundance. Releasing this year, Lunar Twilight Knight will likely be available during the next January or February sale (as well as in the future).
Lune (plastic release) - $30
Originally released as a contentless resin miniature, Lune was re-released in the 2023 post Gencon sale as a plastic white box containing a singular character card, The Gaiety, for use with the Character innovation found in the GCE. As of this post, Lune is currently available to purchase from the shop.
Oktoberfest Aya - $50
A Halloween sale holiday release, the Oktoberfest Aya white box contains both a painter's scale mini and a player's scale mini as well as three seed pattern cards and their corresponding seed pattern gear cards; the Brave Dirndl, Afterdeath Brew, and Durendal. These seed pattern cards do not match the final design of seed pattern cards found in the GCE. In order for players to craft the Afterdeath Brew card they will require the Lonely Tree expansion. Oktoberfest Aya was available during the 2023 Halloween sale and is likely to continue being available in the future.
Percival - $25
Percival is one of the OG white boxes (old scale) and includes a player's scale mini, the Dead Warrior basic hunt event card, and the Black Guard Style secret fighting art card. Percival's content may have some interaction with the soon to be released Black Knight Expansion, but I'm not sure if that has been confirmed anywhere. This white box has been unavailable for quite a while, but if it was going to get reprinted it would hopefully be around the time Black Knight hits the shop.
Pinup Easter Twilight Knight - $27
Another case of a white box initially being released as a standalone kit with not game content, the Pinup Easter Twilight Knight, consisting of a single player's scale miniature was re-released with a vermin resource card, the Gabbering Haremite. The Pinup Easter Twilight Knight was available during the 2023 Easter sale, and is likely to continue being available in the future.
Pinups of Death 1 - $135
Pinups of Death 1 contains only a small amount of gameplay content. Some players may refer to this as promo content, but I disagree as the new gear card (rare gear?), Belt of Gender Swap, does not have the blue promo card back, and can be gained through an event, namely the settlement event card included in the box, A Strange Spot. This white box also includes 8 player's scale pinup models! As of writing this post, Pinups of Death 1 is currently available in the UK warehouse, so is likely to be available periodically as it is restocked.
Pinups of Death 2 - $150
Pinups of Death 2, like its first incarnation includes some meaningful gameplay content (Pinup of Death 3 and 5 include some alt-art AI cards and proxy cards in comparison). It includes 4 rare gear cards; Lantern Brassiere, Rawhide Corset, Teeth Bikini, and Leather Bodysuit. It also includes a settlement event, Dark Seamstress, that allows players to craft them, but note that you do require the Sunstalker expansion to craft the Teeth Bikini. On top of the gameplay content, the white box includes 11 player's scale pinup miniatures. All of the gameplay content from Pinups of Death 2 can also be found in the Legendary Card Pack. As of writing this post Pinups of Death 2 and the Legendary Card Pack are both available to purchase in the shop.
Ringtail Vixen (plastic release) - $25
Another example of a resin standalone release, being re-released in plastic with new gamplay content. The Ringtail Vixen white box includes a player's scale miniature and the Infant Adrift bookmark that is used to modify the Intimacy story event in the core rulebook. The Ringtail Vixen white box was not available in the shop this year, but in my opinion is likely to receive an encore restocking at some point.
Santa Satan - $60
The Santa Satan holiday release was initially posted in the shop stating it included a mystery surprise, which incited a lot of FOMO. The surprise turned out to be a basic resource card called Lump (Cube) of Atnas and an accompanying strain milestone called Atmospheric Change. The white box also includes both a painter's scale mini as well as a player's scale mini. The Atmospheric Change strain milestone can only be achieved by players if they have either the Story in the Snow settlement event from Holiday White Speaker Nico, or have the Flower Knight expansion. The Lump of Atnas card is referenced narratively in the Gambler's Chest Expansion. Santa Satan was available during the 2023 Deathmas sale, and as of this post is available to purchase in the shop.
Screaming Sun Armor - Lucy (plastic release) - $30
Originally released as a photoresin miniature containing beta content, Screaming Sun Armor was just re-released as a hard plastic white box. This kit contains a single player's scale mini, the Screaming Sun Armor hybrid armor set card, the Screaming Tanto and Screaming Sun Mask pattern cards and their corresponding gear cards, and a People of the Sun campaign (Sunstalker expansion) exclusive vermin card, the Carmine Cochineal. This white box was released during the 2023 Black Friday sale, and while out of stock, is highly likely to receive an encore in the near future.
Skrelle - $30
The Skrelle white box was released during the March 2023 sale. It includes a player's scale miniature alongside The Plant and the Stone settlement event and its accompanying double-sided innovation card: Fig Tree. Skrelle is currently out of stock, but highly likely to receive an encore in the near future.
Summer Goth - $60
The Summer Goth white box includes a painter's scale mini as well as a player's scale mini. The included gameplay content consists of 3 seed pattern cards and their corresponding seed pattern gear; Blackstar Bikini, Ghost Garters - Arms, and Ghost Garters - Legs. Like some of the older seed pattern cards released, the cards in this white box do not match the finalized design of the seed pattern cards found in the GCE. Summer Goth was available during the July 2023 sale, and will likely continue being available in the future.
Swashbuckler - $25
The Swashbuckler white box was the first of its kind (its successor was the beta release of Novice). The box contains a player's scale miniature from the Generic line, but features a rare gear card called the Corsair Coat that can be used in Kingdom Death: Monster. The Swashbuckler white box has not been available for the last few years, but I think has a medium chance of receiving an encore release.
Valentine's Day Pinup Twilight Knight - $60
A special Valentine's Day holiday release. This white box includes both a painter's scale mini as well as a player's scale mini. The gameplay content included is a rare gear called the Scoopy Club, it gets a buff when the survivor interacts with vomit which is actually surprisingly often in KDM. Owning the Scoopy Club makes you a member of the Scoopy Club. the Valentine's Day Pinup Twilight Knight white box was available during the 2023 Valentine's Day sale, and will likely continue to be available in the future.
White Speaker - $25
Another OG white box kit. The White Speaker included a player's scale miniature along with a Wares for Trade sticker that would modify the White Speaker story event in the core rulebook. By performing the actions on Wares for Trade, survivors could gain access to two rare gear cards, the Speaker Cult Knife (a great fist & tooth weapon), and the Bloodskin. While the White Speaker white box has not been available for some time, the miniature and gameplay content will be included in the Promos of Death boxset. Additionally, if you are only looking for the gameplay content, it is available in the Legendary Card Pack.
White Speaker Sword Hunter - $25
Released alongside the Ringtail Vixen white box, the White Speaker Sword Hunter is a plastic re-release of a resin miniature. This kit includes the Sword Hunter settlement event, the Sword in the Stone basic hunt event, and the Excalibur rare gear card. Like Ringtail Vixen, Sword Hunter has not been available for a few years, but I believe it is highly likely to receive an eventual encore release.
White Sunlion Armor - Erza (plastic release) - $30
Released before Screaming Sun Armor Lucy, this white box also began life as a photoresin beta release. Included in the White Sunlion Armor white box is a player's scale miniature, the People of the Sun exclusive Corpse Flower terrain card and terrain tile, Bleeding Corpse Lily strange resource card, the White Sunlion Armor hybrid armor set card, and the Beast Kunai and Sunlion Mask pattern cards with their corresponding gear cards. The White Sunlion Armor white box hasn't been available since Black Friday 2022, but is highly liky to receive an encore reprint in the near future.
Winter Solstice Lucy - $60
A Christmas holiday release, Winter Solstice Lucy includes both a painter's scale mini and a player's scale mini. It also includes a seed pattern card and the corresponding seed pattern gear from the Grim Muffler, a gear that can be used to counterplay the Harvester event. Unfortunately, the seed pattern cards do not match the finalized seed pattern cards found in the GCE. Winter. As of the time of this post Winter Solstice Lucy is available in the shop, and likely will continue to be available during future December sales.
X-mas Special Pinup Twilight Knight - $45
One of the older holiday release white boxes, the X-mas Special Pinup Twilight Knight contains a painter's scale mini with some bonus armor kit axe gear that match the included recipe gear card, the Xmaxe. This holiday white box was not available this year, but I believe is likely to receive a seed pattern card revamp in the same manner as the Jack O' Lantern card found in the Halloween Pinup Twilight Knight white box.
~~~
This was a very long and time consuming post (not that I didn't enjoy writing it), so I hope it is useful to some new and old players. While I listed all of the white boxes, this is more of a summary and there are definitely deeper discussions to have (which I encourage), such as things like gear efficacy, or event quality. I think the biggest take away for players is not to bend into FOMO as the vast majority of these kits are still available on a routine basis. Take your time, research your purchases, and determine if you think it is justifiable to purchase the white box and include its content in your campaigns. Let me know if you have any additional questions, or if you'd like me to discuss promo cards (a shorter post) or beta releases (a long post).
If you've had enough of reading what I've written, and instead want to listen to me talk, you can watch a video of Bra, Jay, and I discussing white box content here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znOXfA06TrE
Thanks for reading. <3
Need help with ideas for 3D Sculpted Minis
I’m working on sculpting some “Root Kings” inspired models to use as proxies for AoS. I want them to be useable as both Fyreslayers and Sylvaneth.
I am leaning Sylvaneth first because the playstyle is fun to me.
As such, I want to make a Valaya model to be a proxie for Alarielle.
Thing is, I’m having trouble deciding on her Mount. It’s gotta (in my mind) be a woodland creature sort of thing, preferably one that burrows (roots and all that) but also have some sort of horns/antlers and be able to fly in order to match the stats of Alarielle’s beetle.
Top idea in my mind right now is some sort of Wolverine/Badger monster with big ol’ antlers and some front leg wings akin to the body shape of a mawkrusha. My concern is it being too much like a mawkrusha.
Does anyone else have good ideas for a mount that would work for Valaya?
2023.10.28 06:41 atomicboy47 Let's make a list of all the changes ASA has compared to Survival Evolved
Let's work together to have a detailed list of all the changes that ASA has over ASE, just so other users can have a list. I'll provide some changes and edit it to add to the list.
(Just want to thank everyone who has contributed to the list and keep up the good work, I made sure to credit the users who added to the list. Also please note that the reason for the list is that people who plan on getting ASA can see what they're getting compared to Survival Evolved as well as to show the People who are being Negative towards ASA that it isn't just "ARK but Shiny")
2023.10.13 06:13 Hikinandbikin Red Hand of Doom Minis list
Hey all,
I just went back and listened u/mattcolville podcast on Red Hand of Doom and after a brief skim am loving it and thinking that I probably need to run it. I had been looking for something with the LoMP level of environmental variety. RHOD seems great.
However, I am a huge sucker for minis and so needed to figure out how to print the minis. Turns out there are a ton and no one had put together a list of things with decent STLs. I needed some way to figure out and keep track of all of the things. I found this great list of all (most?) the characters/monsters paizo.com - Forums: 3.5/d20/OGL: Red Hand of Doom--minis list?
I took the list and made this master list with links to my favorite free (mostly) minis that fit bill for almost everything. There were a couple of things that I couldn't find an obvious proxy for, please post your recommendations. Sorry if the order is dumb. Also I understand that not everything even needs a mini because I only use minis for combats.
Hope this saves some other folks some trouble.
2023.09.22 21:37 saladbowl0123 Theory: Boomerang and Magical Boomerang evolution
This theory makes the following claims:
  1. Unenchanted boomerangs are typically associated with the forest and the Kokiri/Koroks
  2. Magical Boomerangs are not associated with water and the Zora despite their blue color
  3. The OoT Boomerang is associated with the Kokiri, not the Zora
  4. The WW Boomerang is a Magical Boomerang due to its identical appearance to the MC Magical Boomerang, ambiguously indicating it is the same object
  5. Every Boomerang with a jewel in its center is enchanted and thus a Magical Boomerang
  6. Lizalfos have a disproportionate affinity for boomerangs
Chapter 5: The Unforeseen Encounter
Startled from his sleep by the system's urgent warnings, the soldier woke instantly, instinctively reaching for a firearm that was no longer there. The old reflexes from countless battles of the Arco War kicked in, his eyes scanning the shadowed forest with practiced acuity. Nothing seemed amiss until a dirt clod flying in from the darkness shattered his moment of confusion.
He nimbly evaded the projectile, then bolted toward the seemingly empty darkness it had emerged from, only to stumble into an illuminated clearing.
"Damn it," he snarled, finding himself encircled.
[Multiple proxy alerts!] the system continued to shriek its warnings, a digital chorus to his predicament.
He was surrounded by an odd mix of creatures, resembling a curious blend of monkeys and beetles. The largest amongst them, who appeared to be a leader, stood across from him, kibitzing and thumping the ground with explosive force.
"What on earth is happening?" the soldier muttered, taken aback.
[Potential analysis: these creatures are territorial. You’ve unintentionally intruded and, given your physical similarity, you're likely perceived as a rival. The confrontation appears to be a challenge,] the system clarified.
"So I’ve basically stepped right into an alien showdown..." he groaned regretfully.
[Your action-driven disposition seems to have inadvertently accepted the challenge.] The system’s tone held a hint of dry inflection.
"Since when did you acquire a sense of humor?" The soldier muttered, shaking off the initial confusion.
His attention shifted to the creature spewing alien threats – the bunky. Even in his power armor, which elevated his considerable height of 6'4" to an imposing 6'7", the bunky towered over him by at least a foot and a half. His system pinged as it shifted into combat mode automatically.
[Suit transitioned to Brawler Mode] it confirmed.
"That seems appropriate," the soldier conceded with grim resolve, bringing his armored fists together. Adopting a defensive stance, he braced himself for the forthcoming encounter.
The battle that ensued was a breathtaking display of power, tactics, and raw survival instinct. The soldier’s powered armor added weight and momentum to his strikes, each punch landing with the force of a small explosive. His every maneuver was carefully calculated to exploit openings, to land strikes, and evade the five-foot claws and sharp teeth of his alien opponent.
On the other hand, the bunky proved to be a formidable foe, countering punches with agile flips, using its claws to rip through the dirt, hurling clouds of debris, attempting to impair the soldier's vision.
In this alien realm, under the surreal mix of alien stars, the brawl between the power-armored soldier and the enormous bunky raged on, a testament to survival and territorial assertion in a world where the rules were yet to be fully understood.
Following his final, punishing blow, the combat-infatigued soldier let out a breath of exhalation, his eyes locked on the fallen bunky. Panting, he shifted his gaze, half-expecting the cluster of onlooking bunkies to pounce at him any moment. He was taken aback when they bowed in unison towards him.
[It seems you have emerged victorious from the territorial conflict. Consequently, you seem to hold authority over these creatures. Future challenges, however, may arise.]
"Fantastic," he grumbled sarcastically.
Suddenly, a notification chimed from his system. [An information packet has arrived. Would you like to open it?]
"Yes, please," he consented, still wary of the kneeling bunkies around him.
[Achievement Unlocked: Beastmaster. While this might be a familiar phrase in some archaic Earth video-game, in your context, it means that the creatures now likely perceive you as their leader. Despite needing occasional leadership, they will largely handle their own affairs, whether maintenance or defense. The sort of leadership required might range from forceful reminders to rewards. Even the mightiest creatures here seem attuned to a form of communication. What use you might have of this information, we cannot guess. Until our next interaction, Queen of Flames.]
Amused yet disgruntled, he retorted, "So you're peeping now, like some sort of cosmic voyeur?"
[Caution regarding the 'Queen of Flames' is advisable should direct contact occur.]
"Yeah, no kidding," he muttered, his apprehension muted by his lingering panting bouts and aching muscles.
He spent some time getting acquainted with the bunkies, realizing that although they had a rudimentary understanding of his wants, they lacked in comprehension of complex concepts. A simple command such as 'throw the rock' was easily executed, whereas 'sharpen the stick' was met with confusion until he demonstrated what it entailed. It was a period of trial, error and surprising fun as he interacted with the peculiar creatures.
However, the call of the unknown propelled him to move on. Before heading on with his journey, he delegated a few simple tasks to keep the bunkies occupied when not hunting or defending their newfound territory.
Thus, his alien journey evolved further.
2023.05.03 14:46 smashmikehunt Optimising Zask bug loops
Greetings again!
Decklist
I know some people dislike these kinds of posts so let me preclude it by saying - I know this isn’t a Tier 0 commander and it COULD be stronger. I am however looking to make this deck as strong as it can be.
Plus I’d rather have one or two people shake their heads at my sub optimal deck as opposed to getting an angry mob hunt me down for posting something with infinites in the regular sub/yell at me insisting temple of the false gods is a good card.
I have posted this deck here before and got some good traction - since then the deck has definitely been refined and isn’t pulling in nearly as many directions.
The main win cons are obviously the bug loops, made possible with flash enablers, alluren, mortuary and verdant succession.
One big change I’ve had with the “loop”enablers is changing Yeva for shimmer Myr - the artifact creature restriction has been far less of a pain than green creature as either altar provides enough mana and a lot of my 1 drop “fodder” bugs are insect artifacts, plus the reduced cost and having flash have been clutch.
As back up win cons that function without the commander I’ve included animation module (combos with Mazireck, bloodfly and mortician beetle) and living death+ewit.
All the pieces in these combos fit with the deck over all, are compact additions and provide some useful synergy and lifetotal pressure outside of their combos.
The main thing I need some help with is a few cuts and balancing out my draw/ramp/removal/tutors and protection (of which there is currently none)
Chew me out, give me some advice - I’ve been using proxies for this this far but really enjoy it and want to get (mostly) real cards so any tips before I take the dive and spend some $$ would be great!
Edit: My meta is pretty varied - lots of us play sub optimal commanders and get the most we can out of them, but generally we play as competitively as possible without playing tier 0 “solved” commanders, and our LGS nights there’s a few guys with turbo naus tier 0 decks etc but it’s always more impressive and more fun bringing something fringey with weird win cons - for reference my main CEDH decks are Helliod, jeska/Dargo and Malcolm/kediss pirates.
Clarkson's Columns: Who Really Starts All the Wars & Auf Wiedersehen to the Volkswagen Golf
Who really starts all the wars? It’s the green-eyed monster
By Jeremy Clarkson (Sunday Times, April 28)
All week we have been reading about the plight of British people in Sudan and how they’ve been trapped in their homes by fierce gun battles in the streets. We’ve been told that the British ambassador was on holiday when the fighting began, that the Germans were quicker to respond to the crisis than we were, and that food is running out fast. We’ve even had witness accounts from those who successfully fled.
But we haven’t been told what the fighting is about. One well-spoken and eloquent man claimed last week it was a proxy war between the US and Russia, but he was speaking to me via TikTok, which is home to many of the world’s most swivel-eyed lunatics. So I have to take his views with a pinch of salty scepticism, I’m afraid.
Even the BBC has been unable to fill us in on what’s happening. Is it really another flicker of flame in the Cold War’s recent reignition? Or is it a tribal squabble over the country’s natural resources? Or is it perhaps a burst of wayward Islamist extremism that threatens to engulf the entire region? Selfishly, I’m quite interested, because by the time you read this, I’ll be camped out, in a minefield, in that neck of the woods. And if I do encounter some kind of IED, it’d be nice to know, as I rapidly disassemble while flying through the air, who put it there and why.
I do know that I can’t run from my current position because that would eventually put me in Mali or Chad and I certainly can’t go to either of those places, unless I want to wind up in an orange jumpsuit, being beheaded on the internet — the Foreign Office is very clear about that. But who is it that wants to cut off my head? On that, there’s no clarity at all.
I’ve just checked and last year in each of these countries armed conflicts claimed between a thousand and ten thousand lives: Colombia, Niger, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Burkina Faso, Mali, Syria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Yemen, Mexico, Myanmar and Ethiopia. And were it not for a bit of poor marksmanship, Cameroon, Mozambique and Pakistan would be on the list as well. And do you know what all these conflicts are about? With the possible exception of Mexico, where I think we all have a pretty clear idea, the answer is no.
Except of course, we do. As often as not, it’s envy. A drug lord is envious of a rival’s turf, so he breaks out the MAC-10s and pretty soon people are dangling from every motorway bridge in the land. Or a tribal leader is envious of another tribal leader’s shiny new Chinese-made helicopter gunship, or an impoverished Malian camel herder is envious when a fat westerner cruises past in an air-conditioned 4x4.
Envy doesn’t just cause armed conflict either. You look at all those people running around in France, setting fire to bin bags and making mooing noises in the expensive bits of Paris, and it quickly becomes obvious that their main beef is not Macron’s bid to raise the retirement age to 24, or his insistence that civil servants should turn up for work at least one day in their lives: it’s envy of people who are so rich they can not only afford to have bin bags but also to fill them every day with stuff they don’t even want.
Closer to home, we have those fools who keep glueing themselves to things. You’ll notice they don’t do this in Pontefract or Phnom Penh. It’s always Knightsbridge or Mayfair. They don’t care about loft insulation any more than you or I do. They just want to annoy the comfortably off, because they’re envious of our holidays and our golf bats and how we can go to work in a car, rather than in a mist of sweat and danger on a two-wheeled children’s toy.
I don’t understand this mentality at all. I’m not a religious man and think that five of the Ten Commandments are absolute nonsense. But I do go with the one that says you shouldn’t covet your neighbour’s ox. Or even your neighbour’s helicopter.
Here in Chipping Norton, I have three neighbours who regularly fly over my house in their Agusta 109 choppers, and I never think, as they whomp off to yet another amazing caviar-and-champagne evening: “Right. I’m going to behead you for that.” I’m happy for them.
I’m reminded at this point of the observation that when an American tramp sees a rich man cruise past in a limousine, he thinks: “One day, I’ll have one of those.” But when a British tramp sees a rich man purr by in a limo, he thinks: “One day I’ll have him out of that.”
Which brings me on to Ryan Reynolds. He was born good-looking and, thanks to a quick wit and excellent comic timing, became not just an extremely successful film star but also the owner of a Welsh football club. And I never want to remove a single ox from his foldyard.
I can understand that you might be a bit aggrieved if you’d been born in poverty in wartorn Yemen. You see clips of western pop stars on the television, getting into their G-Wagens, and you’re bound to think: “Why should he have one of those when all I have is this goat?” Luck’s a hard concept to grasp when you don’t have any.
But I will be jolly cross if I am blown to smithereens in the desert this week because someone thinks his camel will be less manky if someone with a better camel isn’t alive any more. The world doesn’t work like that, and no one should want it to.
My fond auf Wiedersehen to the Volkswagen Golf
After 49 years, it’s the end of the road for the car Jeremy Clarkson has recommended to everyone
By Jeremy Clarkson (Sunday Times, April 28)
A few months ago Ford announced that it would soon stop making the Fiesta. This was a surprise, but it was nothing compared with what came next. Because not long after Volkswagen said that there would soon be no more Golfs. The Fiesta is one thing but no more Golfs?!?! That’s like saying there will be no more shoes. Or no more nitrogen. Or no more soil.
I dimly remember a time before the Golf. It was all very monochromatic and dull. The Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey were obsidian black. Women wore bloomers. Miners wore ties and boys wore shorts. But then, in 1974, along came VW’s little hatchback and suddenly everything was in colour.
Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the man who gave us the Lotus Esprit, the Maserati Ghibli, the BMW M1 and just about every other good-looking car ever made, it landed in a world full of brown Austin Allegros like the Ramones landed on the music scene in that same year.
But it was the GTI version, which came along three years later, that would really put it on the map. I know people who scrimped and saved to buy a GTI. And I know people who part-exchanged a Gordon-Keeble to get one. Like the Mini, it was a classless car; if one pulled up outside your house, you wouldn’t have a clue who was going to get out of it, the plumber or Mick Jagger.
And it not only covered all the people, it covered all the bases too. It was fast, a blast to drive, easy to repair, cheap to run and it had a hatchback and a folding back seat, so it was practical as well. All on its own this car hammered a nail into the coffin of the traditional sports car, because why have an MG or a Triumph TR when the Golf GTI was so much better in every single way.
Let’s not focus too sharply on the GTI, though, because it was the ordinary version that accounted for 85 per cent of the sales. And I shall miss it because it has been my standard answer to anyone who has ever asked me what car they should drive. Have you just passed your driving test? Get a Golf. Are you old? Get a Golf. Do you need something for the school run? Get a Golf. It was the only car anyone ever needed.
Clarkson with a Mk 5 Golf R32, 2006
Which is why, when Volkswagen announced that it’s soon to die, many commentators took it upon themselves to write soppy pieces about how they used a Golf on their honeymoon and how Princess Diana had one and how brilliant that Paula Hamilton ad was, and how it was the second-best-selling car of all time — after the Toyota Corolla — and I’m afraid I wasn’t thinking like that at all. Instead I was thinking that something sinister is going on
It has long been suggested that if the motor car were invented today, there isn’t a government in the world who’d let ordinary members of the public drive one. The military maybe and the police. But ordinary people? Going where they wanted? In a two-ton steel missile? Not a chance. In a modern-day democracy that would be considered absurd.
In Nazi Germany, however, it wasn’t absurd at all. Hitler had built his autobahns and was keen for the German people to use them to move about at whatever speed took their fancy. So he hit upon the idea of a “people’s car”. Literally a Volks Wagen.
A thrusting young engineer called Ferdinand Porsche came up with the design, a factory was built and, hey presto, the world had the Beetle. And the world, incredibly, wanted it. Even though it was a product of Nazi Germany, it went on to become part of the uniform in hippy-trippy California and even the star of the Herbie film series for children. My mum had one, and as a child I’d lie in bed every winter morning listening to it being used to bump start my dad’s Ford Cortina.
I prayed it would succeed because, God, I hated that car. I hated the smell. I hated the noise its air-cooled engine made. I hated its rear-axle arrangement. I hated the sloping bonnet and the upholstery and its slowness. And if I’d known about the Nazi connection back then, I’d have hated it for that as well.
I was alone, though. Because there’d been a battle between Herbie and Hitler and Herbie had won. Which meant that the world had the first car ever to come with a personality. And the world loved it so much that, over the years, 21.5 million were sold.
And it wasn’t just the Beetle. France had the Citroën 2CV. Italy had the Fiat 500. Britain had the Mini. Japan had the Datsun Cherry. America had the Ford Mustang. People were being mobilised. They had the means to travel and see things and do stuff and become cleverer. And on this went through the Seventies with the Golf and company car culture and factories everywhere churning out millions of people’s cars every month.
Except in the Soviet Union, North Korea, Cuba and places like that. Lefty states don’t like their people to travel and get cleverer. They want them queueing for bread and trying to make brake fluid out of shampoo. And then, after a 12-hour shift at the People’s Tractor Factory No 47, they want them at home watching a state-sponsored news channel about the country’s glorious success in that week’s weightlifting competition.
All of which brings me on to modern-day Oxford, where residents may not use a car to see their relatives if they live on the other side of the city, and outer London, where you must give the glorious mayor all of your money if you wish to drive to the shops to buy bread. And that’s before we get to the motorways, which are no longer provided to shorten your journey. They exist solely to catch out the inattentive and fine them. Hard.
In just 20 years an unholy alliance of pink-haired climate enthusiasts, bossy local authorities and a succession of national governments guided by the madness of Twitter has turned the car from a tool of the free to something that should be sneered at. And then turned upside down and burnt.
We have now reached a point in the UK where two out of three people aged 17 to 20 don’t have a driving licence. And in a world like that, where you’re fined for driving too fast and made to feel embarrassed for driving at all and there’s never anywhere to park, what does a people’s car look like?
A Golf? Not really. It’s now too big and everyone sort of knows they can buy exactly the same car, for less, if it has a Skoda badge on the boot lid. Plus, it’s not electric.
The people’s car of the future will have to be electric. Everyone knows that. But everyone is wrong because electric cars will always be too expensive. And you can’t have a people’s car if the people can’t afford it.
I fear then that the people’s car of the future won’t really be a car in the accepted sense at all. It’ll be something like Citroën’s dizzyingly slow Ami, which will be operated in much the same way as the Boris bikes in London. You put your credit card in the slot, drive to wherever you’re going and then leave it at the side of the road for someone else to use. State-run utopia.
I hope I’m dead by then. But in the meantime I’ve just had a quick look in the online classifieds, and you can buy a Mk 1 Golf GTI for about £25,000.
Jeremy’s love letters to a classic
May 23, 2004
“The Golf GTI made a deal of sense. Here was a car that had a big practical boot at the back and a fuel-injected 110bhp engine at the front. It was the car for all reasons, the automotive pig, capable of producing ham, bacon, sausages and pork. You could even eat its ears and its feet.”
December 6, 2005
“My Golf GTI reminds me of the good old days in the White Horse in Fulham when everyone had one, with Val d’Isère mud up the side.”
June 11, 2017
“It’s equipped like a Bentley, it goes like a Ferrari and in traffic, because it’s just a Golf and it’s grey, no one takes my picture.”
July 28, 2019
“You may think that Volkswagen puts its best brains and engineers into Bugatti or Bentley, but it doesn’t. The real boffins work on the bread that pays for the jam.”
2023.04.18 08:37 Homeless_Agatha Looking for "My" commander
I have a few commander decks, but I have yet to find one that really speaks to me that I can relate to.
I love Egyptian mythology and my favorite animal is the cicada. I love how fascinated they were with the sun, how they compared it to dung beetles and cicadas as a symbol of rejuvenation and rebirth.
The closest I have gotten to a commander that really speaks to me is [[Alharu, Solemn Ritualist]]. I have a custom token of a 1/1 insect with flying with a cicada on the art that I could easily proxy in with Alharu. However, I couldn't really find a partner commander that I thought would be fun for me.
If you can think of a fun partner combo with Alharu that doesn't go too far away from the flavor, or a different commander you think I would like, I would be most appreciative.
