2024.05.26 21:59 Anon20250406 Non biased mock draft

  1. Risacher- I think the Hawks draft and trade Risacher similar to 2018, but even if they keep the pick I'm not as high on Sarr being a great fit with Trae Young as others. Clingan is a better fit with Trae, and I expect them to try and trade down for Clingan to replace Capela. OO isn't capable of playing the C long term (he's 6'8) so they need a piece there.
  2. Wizards- Alex Sarr. Not too complicated he's exactly what they need at the front court and has all the potential in the world to be a DPOY + 20ppg scorer.
  3. Houston- I'm still partial to the idea that they trade this pick back to Brooklyn with a Jalen Green package but there's a good chance they keep the pick. If that's the case I think they definitely draft Sheppard. No need to overthink this- he's a good fit if they plan on keeping Amen at the PG position in the long term as Sheppard is a phenomenal shooter and can play great defense. Great long term backcourt pairing.
  4. San Antonio- With Risacher off the board here San Antonio has some tough decisions to make. I think the dream scenario for the Spurs would have been to get a guard + wing combo, but with Risacher off the board you don't have the Tier 1 wing prospect anymore. I like Castle to the Spurs here but I don't believe he would be a great fit with Vassell- that backcourt would lack too much playmaking and tablesetting. It could possibly work but I think Vassell/Castle overlap too much. They could go Topic here for his playmaking and develop the shot. But with Risacher gone I think they would rather get the best remaining wing available with Matas Buzelis. Matas seems like the kind of guy that Greg Popovich would love and I buy his shot in the NBA. He would be a menace defensively with Wembanyama. It takes the load off Wemby defensively a bit more in terms of offside rim protection and allow Wemby more mental space to be aggressive.
  5. Detroit- Recently hired Langdon who I think is a really great pickup for them. He was the 11th pick in 1999 but didn't really work out in the NBA. Had a phenomenal Euroleague career being selected to their all decade team in 2010. He's made really good draft picks for the Pelicans and the Nets, and was a scout for the Spurs from 2012-2016. He does have the Tellem connection but that was a long time ago. He likes lengthy athletic guys who can defend, and he's not afraid of picking multiple players at the same position even if you already have stars in those positions. That being said I think he's in a tough spot. Castle is great but he can't shoot. They really needed Sheppard to be available here, and if there's any angle for a trade up with Houston then I think the Pistons should go for it. But if there isn't then I think they go with Castle. They just need the perimeter defense so badly. I personally don't think the Ivey situation will work out long term in Detroit, and Castle will take his starting spot soon enough.
Now there is a real possibility that he brings Brandon Ingram over to the Pistons with a trade. With Jonas Valanciunas likely moving on from the Pelicans soon they will be eyeing a defensive center like Clingan, and I think there's an outside shot that the Pels trade up into this draft with the pistons to grab Clingan.
  1. Charlotte- at this point the best pick available is either Ron Holland, Clingan, or Nikola Topic. The Hornets are in a unique situation where they don't necessarily need to go BPA because they already have their core 3 set. It's just a matter of whether they feel like they can trade down to get players who are the best fit for them.
I like Ron Holland because he can get out in transition with Lamelo and play that fast placed offense. He's athletic, can play above the rim, and is a great self creator. The issue is I don't really buy the defense long term for him- I think he has potential there but the Hornets coaching has proved that they're not the most disciplined with their players and Ron needs structure and discipline if he wants to develop into a Jaylen Brown type who can be the POA defender.
That being said I still think they should go with Ron Holland here simply because he fills the need on offense that they require the most- paint penetration. Neither Lamelo nor Miller are players who have a quick first step and can get into the paint at will. If you want to be a tier 1 offense in the league you really need a guy who can just threaten to get into the paint at will and keep defenders wary. Ron would provide this and ultimately you just pray that he is enough of a dog on defense that he can hold his own out there next to Melo.
  1. Portland- Clingan is an easy pick here. I don't believe they think Ayton is a long term part of their plan and honestly neither Scoot nor Sharpe have shown any potential to be great on defense (maybe Scoot still has it). But with your long term backcourt pairing being Scoot and Sharpe you NEED a defensive center, and Ayton isn't it. Clingan is a great fit with them not only defensively but offensively as well- he's going to be able to be a roll threat with Scoot and I think Scoot is showing great flashes out of the pick and roll already. I think their chemistry will be great. On top of that Clingan has shown some high post passing and I think he would be great in DHO actions. With Scoot coming off a screen/DHO with Clingan he can attack the basket with momentum and I think that would be a great action for them.
  2. San Antonio- the BPA here is Topic. I think the Spurs roll with it and don't think twice. He's a great table setter for the team as Wemby, Matas, and even Vassell need that traditional point guard guy to get them their shots. He would be a great fit with the team and there's no need to overthink it here.
  3. Memphis- with Clingan off the board they still need to find a good fit for them. Their big man rotation is JJJ, Laravia, Santi, GG, Clarke. Their wing rotation is lacking though as it's basically Bane, Kennard, and Vince Williams Jr. I think if Clingan is off the board then they either trade down for a lower C like Edey or Ware or Missi, otherwise they just grab a wing here. I like any of Bobi Klintman, Tidjane here. The big issue for them drafting a wing is that they just lack so much rebounding and even though Clarke is a good rebounder he's too injured to be relied upon as your starting C. I think they eventually just sign Valanciunas or something and go with a wing.
  4. Utah- they overachieved yet again this year thanks to their coaching. I think they have their frontcourt set long term with Lauri, Walker, Hendricks, and I'll even throw in Kenneth Lofton Jr in there. But guys like Clarkson, Sexton, and Collins are going to be gone soon and I think of their backcourt they're really only going to keep Keyontae George. Ultimately I think they need another wing and a point guard to be really set, and preferably players who can play good defense at both spots. I think Collier is a good pick for them as he's shown he can be the primary ball handler of an offense, and play great defence as well. He's slow footed for sure, but he's strong and can turn on to be a dog on defense. I like his fit next to Keyontae George.
  5. Chicago- They've shown over and over that they preer to be competitive. However that hasn't prevented them from taking on projects like Paw. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they do something crazy like pick Edey here. They have a lot of decisions to make such as resigning Derozan, and determining if Zach Lavine can possibly be moved, resigning Paw, Drummond, and potentially extending Caruso? They're at $130M right now without resigning anybody and so I don't think Derozan will be resigned unfortunately. Paw and Drummond to cheaper contracts for sure. But that leaves a SF spot open in the rotation and I think they go with Salune if he hasn't been picked, or Cody Williams.
Often times people gloss over the Bulls but I tried to give them a little extra thought here. I don't think right now it's clear if even the FO knows what they want to do. Lavine is just unmoveable. He will just have to be the Bulls starting SG for a while moving forward. There's an outside shot that the Bulls just say fuck it let Lavine sit at home but I don't think ownership would do that......
  1. OKC- This is a pick I think they look to trade. Sam Vecenie recently talked in a podcast about what kind of guy the Thunder would look for at the big man position- somebody who can dribble pass shoot on offense, and be a monster rebounding. Rebounding at the Thunders biggest weakness right now and I think that needs to be addressed immediately. Obviously the ideal scenario is to package this pick to get a player but if they can't then I think they go with Kyle Filipowski. He's mocked here for a reason- flexible offensively and fits into what OKC want to do on offense while being serviceable as a rebounder.
  2. Sacramento - with Monk likely moving on to a larger contract I think the Kings decide to go with Rob Dillingham here to replace the offensive firepower. Dillingham can't completely replace Monk as Monk had a level of athleticism that allowed him to be insanely dynamic on offense, but he can do a pretty good job of it at a cheaper price. IMO the priority outside of this for Kings is to get rid of the Barnes contract ASAP and get some perimeter defenders around Fox and Sabonis ASAP.
  3. Portland- Having gotten Clingan they're less concerned about rebounding and defense but I think they're still looking for more perimeter defense. If Cody williams is still here or Tidjane then I think they grab him- basically whoever the Bulls pass on. But if you're not high on either of those guys or if you believe in the Toumari/Khris long term then I think they try to grab a backup big like Yves. I don't think Robert Williams is going to be healthy long term so they need a backup. I honestly like Daron Holmes but that might be kind of a reach at this pick and you're probably better off trading down if you want Daron. Otherwise Kel el Ware or Yves as your more conventional picks at this point.
  4. Miami- Another team with a lot of decisions to make around a star player (Butler). 5th in DRTG but 21st in ORTG. They tried to get Rozier at the end of the season to get more offense rolling as Herro kind of proved he wasn't able to be that guy on the team. I think they're quite dissappointed in Herro right now, but Herro is just too limited by athleticism. He doesn't have the first step to be a threat to penetrate into the paint and that will always limit him and the Heat can't rely on him to be a primary creator for the team.
To be honest I would have really liked Dillingham here for the Heat. But without that I think they could go a few different routes-
Knecht- gets you 80% of Buddy Hield and can replace Duncan Robinson if they can move on from his contract.
Jared McCain- flamethrower shooter
Devin Carter- fast guard who can shoot, pass a bit, and most importantly attack the paint.
Of these 3 I like Devin Carter the most. I think the Heat go that route as well and choose a more established older player in Carter and try their best to move on from Duncan/Rozier.
I would also like to point out with the Heat that Kevin Love and Caleb martin need to be resigned, and while I can see them resigning Martin I think they'll let love walk unless it's for something close to the minimum. Jovic can kind of replace Love, but his rebounding leaves much to be desired. I think there's an outside chance they get Kyle Filipowski if he can fall this far, or they move down to get Daron Holmes (athletic defending big man who can shoot).
This time around this draft holds very few wing pieces who can be tier 1 prospects. Really only Matas and Risacher. It's a very high premium this time around. Additionally teams need perimeter POA defenders more and more- there's a good amount of offensive guards but not a lot of defensive POA guards.

🧠Microsoft's first SoTA SLM to be shipped with Windows

Microsoft announced a new small language model called Phi Silica. It has 3.3 billion parameters, which makes it the smallest model in Microsoft's Phi family of models. Phi Silica is designed specifically for the Neural Processing Units (NPUs) in Microsoft's new Copilot+ PCs. Despite its small size, Phi Silica can generate 650 tokens per second using only 1.5 Watts of power. This allows the PC's main processors to be free for other tasks.

Developers can access Phi Silica through the Windows App SDK and other AI-powered features like OCR, Studio Effects, Live Captions, and Recall User Activity APIs. Microsoft plans to release additional APIs, including Vector Embedding, RAG API, and Text Summarization. These AI-powered PCs will have dedicated AI chips for running LLMs and other AI workloads.
Why does it matter?
As Microsoft continues to invest in developing small language models and integrating AI into its Windows platform, Phi Silica represents a significant step forward in making advanced AI capabilities more accessible to developers and end-users. Also, as major PC manufacturers want to introduce AI-powered laptops this summer, Microsoft might lead the way by introducing CoPilot PC+ and now Phi Silica.

🗺️AI RESEARCH: Research: Mapping the ‘mind’ of an LLM

https://preview.redd.it/0qym99sgxz1d1.png?width=1292&format=png&auto=webp&s=36d71065548bbad8de3134a61f555a379541a234
Anthropic just published new research that successfully identified and mapped millions of human-interpretable concepts, called “features”, within the neural networks of Claude.
**The details:** Researchers used a technique called ‘dictionary learning’ to isolate patterns that corresponded to concepts, from objects to abstract ideas. By tweaking the patterns, the researchers showed the ability to change Claude’s outputs, potentially leading to more controllable systems. The team mapped concepts related to AI safety concerns, like deception and power-seeking — providing glimpses into how models understand these issues.
Why it matters: Despite how fast AI is accelerating, we still don’t have a strong understanding of what’s going on beneath the hood of LLMs. This research is a major step towards making AI more transparent — enabling better understanding, control, and safeguarding of these powerful tools.

Scarlett Johansson sues OpenAI for using her voice in ChatGPT

Scarlett Johansson claims OpenAI asked her to voice ChatGPT, but she declined. Later, OpenAI released a voice named "Sky" that sounded eerily similar to her. Johansson was shocked and angered by the similarity and has hired legal counsel to investigate how the "Sky" voice was created.
OpenAI denies that the "Sky" voice was intended to resemble Johansson, has paused using it in its products, and apologizes for not communicating better. Johansson seeks transparency from OpenAI and believes that individual rights must be protected in the era of deep fakes and AI content.
Why does this matter?
Another day, another OpenAI drama. OpenAI already faces lawsuits from authors and news organizations over copyright infringement in training its AI models. Johansson's case shows the limited legal protection actors have against AI mimicking their likeness, and some lawmakers are proposing bills to address the issue.

2024.05.22 16:41 Makuta_Servaela Inconsistent Gendering in the MU.

A note of interest in the lore:
The Yesterday Quest: "After that, someone decided that maybe a gentler touch was needed for Psionics … so all the subsequent Psionics types were made female.” "
This states that "gender" in the MU just refers to more gentle programming.
However, in the Farshtey Feed, we get this, when he is asked about female Skakdi's existences.
They are actually more vicious and destructive than male Skakdi
Plus, Matoran are the only species that seem to have their genders element-locked, judging by Vezok.
So, by this logic, would anyone who has observed Skakdi males and females from the outside enough to compare automatically gender the Piraka as female?
And what would have been the basis of the Great Beings' coding anyway, if female Skakdi go against the literal one thing we know about MU genders?
(Playing with this idea as not just a mistake on Farshtey's part, but actual lore implications).

2024.05.22 03:43 LeadingEast7687 My take on some canidates from the 2020 primaries, who could have made intresting nominees for the Democrats.

  1. John Delaney. He was the first one actually to declare he was running for President, I think it was back in 2017 or 2018. He ran on being bipartisan, and trying to bring people together, I remember reading his book The Right Answer, and it seemed to have some good ideas. Never caught on in the primaries, and the debates caused him to come off as defensive, expecally when some canidates were attacking him on healthcare. His town halls were pretty good though. If Delaney gets the nomination, he brings in moderates and blue dogs, but does the liberal wing stay home? What states could Delaney win?
  2. John Hickenlooper. Was the pretty popular governor of Colorado, and before then, he was the mayor of Denver, and helped bring the Colorado Rockies to the state. He was also the founder of one of the first craft microbreweries in the country, before he goes into politics. He won the 2010 Governor's race, in a very good Republican wave year, then ends up winning again in 2014, in another good Republican year. In 2020, he had the same problem as Delaney in the debates, he came across as the scold, who was against Medicare for Hall. However, if you look closly at his record as Governor, he was able to bring people together, around the enviroment, and gun control.
  3. Steve Bullock. I mentioned him in another post, but in more detail, Bullock won in 2016, beating Greg Ginoforte. Was able to work with the Republican Leg, in bring a surplus to the state, and he seemed to be a steady, levelheaded guy. If it was any other year other then 2020, with it being the year of George Floyd, then he could have made a fine nominee, or running mate for another Democrat. Wonder what would have happened if Biden had chosen Bullock as his running mate, does he make more inroads in the Mountion west?
  4. Tom Steyer. Former hedge fund guy, but hen he ended up using his money to fund enviromental and good government causes. Was one of the first to call for Donald Trump's impeachment, back before most mainstream Democrats were doing so. Steyer actually was gaining for a while, and there was talk that he might do very well in South Carolina, before finishing third and dropping out of the race. Steyer would have made a very intresting nominee, with the way that he used his large wealth, in contrast to Trump's.
  5. Krysten Gillibrand. I know many people give her shit, because they blame her for Al Franken resigning from the Senate, but many Democrats wanted him gone, so a pox on all of them, if that is the case, not just her, she just ended up being the scapgoat. Gillibrand fought hard to change the way that the military handled sexual assult cases, in regards to having those cases being taken away from the military chain of command. From what I remember from her in the debates, she was a real scrapper, when she was able to get her time in, but I remember it was hard for her to be able to break through. But when she did break through, she always had memorable things to say.

2024.05.10 16:02 GuyOnTheMike AA SEASON PREVIEW: WEST DIVISION

After our soft opener (Winnipeg at Cleburne last night), today the entire American Association is in action! After taking a look at the East Division yesterday, today we switch gears and try to shake out how things will unfold in the West.
As I mentioned yesterday, AA rosters have much less continuity than recent years due to a large drain of experienced players going to the Mexican League after they loosened roster restrictions on foreign players. Without further ado:
FARGO-MOORHEAD REDHAWKS
2023 Record: 51-49 (4th, L 1st round vs. Sioux City)
Season Outlook: Entering 2023 as defending AA champions, Fargo-Moorhead returned the majority of their championship roster (including nearly their whole lineup)...and just never got going. Chris Coste has had winning teams more often than not entering year 5 at the helm, so he's looking for a bounceback from a lot of familiar faces this year.
The RedHawks return 15 players, including a whopping ten pitchers off a staff that was middle of the pack a year ago. Tyler Grauer (6-4, 4.38), Davis Feldman (3-1, 2.42, then sold to Toronto), and late-season revelation Colten Davis (7-0, 2.15) will return to front the rotation with Alex Dubord and Garrett Alexander back to shore up the back end. Offensively, several multi-year starters move on, but key contributors such as Dillon Thomas (.344, 8 HR, 35 RBI in 56 games), Evan Alexander (.281, 9 HR, 30 SB), and captain Sam Dexter (.271, 7 HR, 47 RBI) are back. As for newcomers, Frontier League veterans Dakota Phillips (.275, 12 HR, 74 RBI) and Kona Quiggle (.268, 12 HR, 59 RBI) come over, while Yoelqui Cespedes (half-brother of Yoenis) is an intriguing power hitter making his Indy ball debut. The pitching side almost all comes back, but Orlando Rodriguez is a new arm to watch.
I actually feel pretty good about this roster, so I'm expecting considerable improvement from 2023. How far does that improvement take them? That's less clear.
KANSAS CITY MONARCHS
2023 Record: 59-40 (1st, W Miles Wolff Cup Finals vs. Chicago)
Season Outlook: Death, taxes, and Kansas City having an absolute wagon. The Monarchs won their third AA title in six years last season after cruising to the division title with the best record in the league. Joe Calfapietra has never won fewer than 57 games in his first six seasons at the helm in KC, so the expectation is title or bust—and they often get there. Last season required a pretty significant rebuild, which the Monarchs did seamlessly, and this year is shaping up to be the same.
Kansas City returns just four players, with starters Dalton Moats (5-3, 4.61) and Ashton Goudeau (2-1, 2.57, plus 3-0, 1.37 in 2023 playoffs) back alongside back-end arm Grant Gavin (6-4, 3.88, 78 K in 51 innings). The entire offense (first in HR, second in runs in 2023) is being rebuilt with only 28 at-bats (from one player), returning. Former MLB 1st-round picks Blake Rutherford (.336, 12 HR, 49 RBI) and Travis Swaggerty are the headliners, alongside another Triple-A bat in Tucker Bradley (.277, 7 HR, 55 RBI) and a power threat in Frankie Tostado (.240, 14 HR, 78 RBI). Pitching-wise, Will McAffer (0-2, 4.87) returns to the AA, where he was excellent in Winnipeg in 2022. Virtually the rest of the incoming staff are Double-A/Triple-A vets who have enjoyed some success at the pro level.
There's often not a lot of flash on the pitching side of KC's teams, but they usually end up with a top-4 staff by the end of the year. Combine that with an offense shaping up to be dangerous and Joe C. and company are ready for a title defense.
LINCOLN SALTDOGS
2023 Record: 48-52 (5th)
Season Outlook: The Lincoln Saltdogs have mastered the art of being mediocre, having been within five games of .500 (on either side) in 12 of the last 15 years, though last year saw them three games out of the postseason. Brett Jodie is back for his fourth year in charge in Lincoln and is trying to see if this is the year he finally gets things over the hump.
Lincoln returns a decent core of nine players, highlighted by starters Abdallah Aris (6-4, 4.51, 77 Ks) and Zach Keenan (4-6, 4.98), along with stud reliever Walter Borkovich (2.57 ERA, 46 K in 26 games) on the pitching side, as well as All-Stars Nick Anderson (.276, 20 HR, 58 RBI, 16 SB) and Drew Devine (.282, 7 HR, 12 SB), and rock-solid Luke Roskam (.294, 14 HR, 62 RBI) and Zane Zurbrugg (.304, 4 HR, 12 SB in 54 games) pacing the offense. As far as newcomers, Lincoln raided Pioneer League champion Ogden, bringing in six former Raptors (and nine PBL guys in total), most notably Logan Williams (.314, 13 HR, 72 RBI) and Pioneer League Reliever of the Year Dan Kubiuk (0.50 ERA, 15 saves, 50 K in 35.2 IP).
A lot will hinge on how well the Pioneer League cast performs with a step up in competition, but maybe just maybe this is the year for Lincoln to break the mold. If the PBL guys falter, then Lincoln probably spends September at home again.
SIOUX CITY EXPLORERS
2023 Record: 52-48 (T-2nd, L West Division Finals vs. Kansas City)
Season Outlook: Sioux City was on the verge of a huge upset of Kansas City, but blew a 5-0 lead in the 7th inning of a decisive Game 3 of the West Finals to make it a perfect 0-for-30 years in terms of championships. Steve Montgomery, the longest-tenured skipper in the AA, is back for Year 10 in Siouxland (with a new nine-year extension) with as many 70-win seasons as non-playoff seasons (two). The X's are always competitive, but also haven't won more than 53 games since 2019.
The X's will return 11 players, most notably John Nogowski (.317, 4 HR, 20 BB, 9 K in 34 games) and Scott Ota (.311, 7 HR, 25 RBI in 38 games), who were both huge down the stretch last year. Two-time AA Defensive Player of the Year Chase Harris is back, looking to rebound from a career-worst year (.210, 5 HR, 26 SB). Veteran relievers Nate Gercken and Brandon Brosher both have had considerable success, but are back to looking to bounce back after so-so seasons. Among new acquisitions, Nick Shumpert is the most notable, with two years of AA experience. It's hard to figure out what else is going on for SC because as of Wednesday night (when I'm typing this), the X's have just nine position players listed. Obviously, a few more hitters will be signed by Friday (hey, Nate Samson is still available...).
All I can say is that Mongo will usually figure it out and the X's will be OK, but that's probably it: just OK. That said, based on their current roster compared to the rest of the division, I could very well see them on the outside looking in come playoff time.
SIOUX FALLS CANARIES
2023 Record: 52-48 (T-2nd, L 1st round vs. Kansas City)
Season Outlook: Last season was an unqualified success for the Birds as Charlie Hasty and the offense covered up a lot of deficiencies, earning the squad's first winning season and playoff berth in a full season since 2010 (SF was 31-27 and lost the AA Finals in the shortened 2020 campaign). Now comes the hard part: building off of it. In the sad-sack 31-year history of the Canaries, they only have seven winning seasons—and only once have they posted them back-to-back (they've never made the playoffs twice in a row). Mike Meyer is back for his 7th season (with a well-deserved extension) trying to make 2023 the foundation, not the apex.
The Birds are bringing back a lot, keeping a league-high 17 players around, including both catchers and possible the best outfield in the league (Mike Hart, Hunter Clanin, and Wyatt Ulrich), alongside franchise icon Jabari Henry (3rd in all-time AA home runs) and breakout infielder Jordan Barth (.298, 11 HR, 66 RBI, 16 SB). Eight arms return from the league's worst pitching staff a year ago, but ace relievers Charlie Hasty (2.28 ERA, 22 saves) and Brady Stover (4-0, 2.82 in 25 games) are back, as are steady (if unspectactular) starters Mitchell Walters (8-5, 5.02, 92 Ks) and Ty Culbreth (7-5, 6.23, 108.1 IP). However, the big pitching story is the signing of All-Star Ryan Zimmerman (10-3, 3.35, 100 Ks) from Milwaukee, who immediately slots in as a bona-fide ace. Josh Rehwaldt (.315, 29 HR, 90 RBI, 18 SB) is an impressive offensive acquisition after consecutive 29-HR seasons in the Frontier League.
Sioux Falls appears to be trying to slug their way into the postseason again, but with the front-line starter they've been lacking and plenty of ammo offensively, their chances are more than fair.
WINNIPEG GOLDEYES
2023 Record: 43-57 (6th)
Season Outlook: As many predicted, the Greg Tagert experiment failed miserably as he went one-and-done in Manitoba, crashing the Goldeyes into the basement for the first time in the 30-year history of the franchise. New manager Logan Watkins is in after leading Cleburne to three playoff appearances in as many seasons, looking to guide the proud franchise back to prominence.
The Fish bring back seven returners, though former MVP Max Murphy (.286, 26 HR, 84 RBI) and Rookie of the Year Dayson Croes (.351, 3 HR, 67 RBI) are great starting pieces, as is Miles Simington (.329 in 47 games). Joey Matulovich (5-9, 3.78, 121 Ks) and Landon Bourassa (11-6, 4.62, 109.0 IP) were Winnipeg's top starters in 2023 and come back, while Travis Seabrooke is as durable of a bullpen arm there is (league-record 60 games in 2022). There are notable additions in the return of Tasker Strobel (3.41 ERA and 21 saves for Winnipeg in 2022), while the offense gets a boost from a surprise re-appearance of veteran Edwin Arroyo (career. 310 average in 4 AA seasons) and Gio Brusa (16 HR, 63 RBI in 2022). Roby Enriquez and Adam Hall are signings out of affiliated ball who could turn some heads.
One thing I have no doubt of: Winnipeg will be better this year. The climb is steeper in a tough division, but they kept virtually everyone worth keeping and added some very nice pieces around them. A winning record and playoff berth are absolutely within reach.
Final Division Standings Prediction
Going through all of these previews, I believe that most of the West is better than most of the East and that there is no truly bad team in this division. I waffled back and forth on about every spot. Either way, make no mistake, all six teams absolutely have a playoff shot.
  1. Kansas City
  2. Fargo-Moorhead
  3. Winnipeg
  4. Sioux Falls
  5. Lincoln
  6. Sioux City

Gilgo Beach task force expanding scope to look into other Suffolk unsolved homicides, DA Ray Tierney says
The Gilgo Beach Homicide Task Force has expanded its scope to take a “fresh look” at other unsolved cases involving human remains found elsewhere in the county, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said Thursday.
The revelation follows a report issued by the district attorney’s office that stated the work of the task force is “far from complete” regarding Gilgo Four suspect Rex A. Heuermann and other defendants “yet to be named.”
“We’re looking at other dead bodies,” Tierney told Newsday in an interview. “We’re using the same methodology that we used before, but we’re taking a fresh approach to each body.”
The goal, Tierney said in his office’s recently published annual report, is “solving every outstanding cold case homicide.” When asked about that statement, Tierney said the task force started with Gilgo but has “morphed into something else.” “We have six other bodies on Gilgo and we’ve expanded the investigation off Gilgo,” Tierney said of recent efforts by what has been referred to as the Gilgo Beach Homicide Task Force since its inception in January 2022. “We’re not going to confine ourselves to Gilgo.”
Tierney spoke of the expanded focus of the multiagency task force — which includes prosecutors and investigators from his office, Suffolk police homicide detectives, state police investigators and the FBI — one week after it concluded a nine-day search by police cadaver dogs of thousands of acres of woods in and around Manorville, where partial remains of two Gilgo Beach victims were found.
That search eventually expanded to North Sea to a wooded preserve where the remains of another cold case victim, Sandra Costilla, were found in 1993. Prosecutors under former Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota named since-convicted killer John Bittrolff, of Manorville, a suspect in that case.
While Tierney acknowledged the K-9 search of Manorville ended May 1, he declined to discuss specific individuals or to say if the search was fruitful.
“Anytime you do anything, you learn something,” Tierney said of the search. “The significance of it, well, you know, I guess that will have to be evaluated.”
The district attorney's annual report, a 108-page magazine-style publication highlighting the accomplishments of the office, also referenced investigative assistance the task force received from the U.S. Secret Service’s Electronic Investigations Section.
Tierney said the task force turned over more than 420 devices investigators seized during search warrants executed at the home, office and storage spaces rented by Heuermann to Secret Service investigators who specialize in analyzing encrypted devices following his July 13 arrest.
Tierney said the items turned over to the federal agency include smartphones, palm pilots, tablets, laptops, desktop computers and CD-ROMs.
“A large number of smart devices were found at the locations,” Tierney said. “An unusual amount.”
Tierney said the Secret Service used Greykey, extraction software he said the agency is particularly proficient at using, to access information from Heuermann’s devices. Following a court appearance last month, Tierney said discovery associated with those devices has been turned over to Heuermann’s defense attorney, Michael J. Brown, who could not immediately be reached for comment.
Secret Service spokesperson Alexa Worley declined to comment, citing agency policy regarding ongoing investigations.
Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to first- and second-degree murder in the killings of Megan Waterman, Amber Lynn Costello and Melissa Barthelemy, and second-degree murder in the slaying of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, collectively known as the Gilgo Four. The victims, whose remains were discovered in 2010, were sex workers. Their remains were found “completely nude” and restrained by either tape, burlap or belts, court records show.
Discovery has included 12 terabytes of data, including a transcript of the grand jury presentation, 85 grand jury exhibits, autopsy reports, photographs from the crime scene and the medical examiner’s office, search warrants and affidavits, prosecutors said in a recent court filing. The defense was also given paperwork from the Suffolk County Police Department and its crime lab, as well as outside laboratory documentation, prosecutors said.
Heuermann has been held without bail since his July 13 arrest.
Prosecutors have said Heuermann had hundreds of contacts with sex workers in the years before he was arrested. He was connected to the crime primarily through cell site data, burner phone records and DNA evidence linking him to the women and the location where the bodies were found, prosecutors have said.
Heuermann used seven burner phones over a 14-month period to do approximately 200 searches about the Gilgo Beach investigation — even visiting the website Suffolk police created in 2020 as a clearinghouse for information and tips — and for photos of the victims and to learn about their family members, including siblings and children, Tierney has said.

Skyline (2010)

Language: English
Date started: October 17, 2023
Date watched: April 10, 2024
Directed by: Colin Strause, Greg Strause
Written by: Liam O'Donnell Joshua Cordes
An alien invasion movie set in Los Angeles. None of the characters have last names.
The story is mostly garbled, just scraps and scenes from other alien invasion stories. The film opens with the start of the invasion, then flashes all the way back to... the night before? We meet some of the characters at a party. I guess this counts as backstory, but we learn almost nothing useful about any of these characters.
Regardless of the weird structure and very simple plot, I really did enjoy the creature designs, the visual consistency, and the confident camera work. CGI is usually one of my least favorite aspects for this kind of thing, but it was handled with real care here. There are a variety of creature forms, mostly big and dangerous, and they all have different ways of moving. The human scale creatures glide along on their tentacles, it looks cool - and we aren't forced to see it over and over again, just the occasional moment.
I don't know how they were able to turn on the television without power, or indeed what channel they were watching, as it implies that a news station was still in operation even when 99% of the population had been captured. This was probably intended as a technology gag to upset the nitpickers, in which case: they got me.

2024.05.05 08:31 wiklr How rumors surrounding Dan Schneider permeated the internet

How rumors surrounding Dan Schneider permeated the internet
https://i.imgur.com/XCPBBUS.png
Out of all the prolific TV show creators, Dan Schneider amassed internet infamy through 4chan memes alone. His lawsuit suing the Quiet on Set producers even included one of them:
https://preview.redd.it/ylld9xb4rjyc1.png?width=401&format=png&auto=webp&s=61093e5fd9cfb0ac32b5cd518a061fb4fbedf7f6
These are memes that predate MeToo, his ousting from Nickelodeon, Kate Taylor's expose and the Quiet on Set documentary.
___
For the longest time, Schneider's negative reputation online had been regurgitated as a joke with no concrete and credible evidence. Regarding allegations of sexual impropriety, a reddit comment from 2021 said:
NO ACTRESSES HAVE SPOKEN UP ABOUT DAN!! Where are you getting your information? Facebook?? Gossip YouTube channels??.
This was after Angelique Bates and Alexa Nikolas had spoken up about their experience on set and before Jenette McCurdy's book came up. For some reason child actors talking about being physically, emotionally or financially exploited by adults, whether it's by entertainment industry professionals or even their own parents wasn't enough. And any inappropriate behavior is hand-waved as creepy but not necessarily considered as a typical MeToo story.
Criminal allegations do require victims and witnesses speaking up. Yet some of these rumors stemmed from blind items from a popular blog called Crazy Days and Nights ran by an anonymous entertainment lawyer.
The twitter account of An Open Secret said:
4chan only copied the work of (a)entylawyer & our film on the subjects of Nickelodeon & Dan Schneider.
This isn't entirely true. Forums had noticed the sexual content on Schneider's shows before An Open Secret was released. And CDAN's blind items weren't widely spread because they were credible on their own. Many celebrities had a variety of gossip surrounding them that didn't become commonly known. Rather, users pointed out the blinds as additional justification for finding Nickelodeon shows creepy.
Some commentary tried to blame the unproven claims of CSA towards self-righteous SJWs or conspiracy minded right wingers. However, it's not political beliefs that gave the entertainment gossip legs - but a demographic that catered to barely legal porn.
\"I am beginning to realize how creepy this show actually is :/ so many situations obviously designed for creepy old guys to drool over barely legal meat o_o\"
4chan itself is far from being a bastion of morality, but an amalgamation of intrusive thoughts dressed up as edgy humor. It hosted threads sexualizing teenage girls in movies and tv shows. Reddit on the other hand, gained its mainstream reputation through Anderson Cooper calling out jailbait content. Both sites documented why older guys were watching shows made for kids.
Scenes from Schneider's shows ended up in NSFW subreddits. A post from a banned subreddit likened one shot to a 90s tv show erotica. And because reddit used to have a predominantly male userbase, some of it were posted in default subreddits as a funny meme.
In 2012, some users expressed concerns:
This actually airs on tv for young children. Poor kids having all kinds of weird feelings down there.
But most of the comments reassured themselves they're not being creepy:
\"She's over 18 so all is well no matter if you're her age or not ;)\"
The show caters to a tween audience. From a 2010 New York Times article:
For those who have not had any children between the ages of 5 and 15 anytime in the last decade, Mr. Schneider is the creator of a string of hits for the Nickelodeon children’s cable channel.
Another user claimed to work for the same show said:
\"I am currently a PA on this show...I remember when they did this shoot. Couldn't believe the outfits they were wearing, but I also wasn't complaining...\"
From a 2022 Business Insider article:
Two people recalled Schneider fighting with Nickelodeon over teenage actresses' costumes on "Victorious," with Schneider — who signed off on all outfits — campaigning for the skimpier options.
The result of Schneider winning the costume disputes ended up as creepshot fodder on the internet.
From a 2005 New York Times article:
To gauge the response of his viewers, Mr. Schneider said, he reads Internet message boards. "I think that they want to see kids that reflect what their friends are like," he said. "But they also want to see kids that are like the friends they wish they had. I can't tell you how much work we put into casting this show."
Ask yourself whether it is truly kids who wanted to see young girls in short skirts. And whether it is truly kids writing in message boards in 2005, where most of the internet was anonymous.
There comes a point when the excuse that everyone else was ok with it, nobody stopped it and nobody's removing it stops becoming a defense of character but an admission of a systemic problem.
Sexualizing teenagers is not unique to Schneider nor Nickelodeon. It is pervasive in society that is experienced by the average person, capitalized through marketing where sex sells, and further normalized throughout the internet. And in this specific instance, served to a mainstream audience under the guise of kid's television.
Some of the worst rumors about Dan Schneider will not withstand scrutiny. We may never truly know what actually happened behind the scenes. But what we do know is what was broadcasted to the public. And some of the shows Schneider created does not stand the test of time. The very same shows are what's going to define his legacy - not blind items, not internet memes, nor implications by a documentary.

2024.05.01 02:14 Hexadiddle [Fully Lost] “It’s a Dog Gone Tale: Destiny’s Stand”, an actual film produced by my highschool

I went to a film/art highschool, Gstar, which was founded by a man named Greg Hauptner in southern Florida. He has an IMDb page as well as his own production company which produced a film called “It’s a Dog Gone Tale: Destiny’s Stand”. While looking at the IMDb, the only summary of the film is as follows:
“I do know what it's about. I know how it ends. I'm trying to remember it exactly. A town must come together to confront, like, big business tycoon, with the help of a dog. The dog brings them together.”
(Yes that’s the actual summary)
It says it was released in 2010 and has no pictures or clips whatsoever. An alternate title is “Destiny and the Bulldozer”. When I searched this nothing showed up. I cannot find a single lead on what this is aside from movie databases. Not a single one has any information aside from the information in the IMDb. If you have literally ANY information about this please let me know. I have sent an email to Greg but I doubt he will respond as he tends not to unless it’s related to the school. If he does I’ll follow up. Thanks in advance!

NOT FOR DISSEMINATION IN THE UNITED STATES OR THROUGH U.S. NEWSWIRE SERVICES
TORONTO, ON / ACCESSWIRE / April 30, 2024 / Northern Superior Resources Inc. ("Northern Superior" or the "Company") (TSXV:SUP)(OTCQB:NSUPF) and ONGold Resources Ltd. (formerly 1348515 B.C. Ltd.) ("ONGold") (TSXV:ONAU) are pleased to announce that further to the news releases dated July 10, 2023, September 6, 2023, and April 2, 2024, ONGold has completed the previously announced acquisition of Northern Superior's mining projects located in Ontario (the "Transaction") following receipt of conditional approval to list the Common Shares (as herein after defined) on the TSX Venture Exchange (the "TSXV"). It is anticipated the common shares of ONGold (the "Common Shares") will begin trading under the symbol "ONAU" on the TSXV on May 3, 2024 (the "Trading Date"), subject to final approval of the TSXV.
ONGold has now completed the Financings (as hereinafter defined) for gross proceeds of $5.2 million and escrow release conditions of the ONGold Subscription Receipt and Finco Subscription Receipt (both as hereinafter defined) have been satisfied resulting in the issuance of 10,108,843 Common Shares. The Financings and subsequent conversions into Common Shares resulted in a deemed issue price of $0.51 per Common Share.
The Transaction was undertaken pursuant to the letter agreement (the "Letter Agreement") dated July 10, 2023, between Northern Superior and ONGold. Following the closing of the Transaction, ONGold now holds a 100% interest in the Ti-pa-haa-kaa-ning Project (the "TPK Project"), the October Gold Property ("October Gold Project"), as well as certain other exploration properties (collectively, the "Ontario Assets") previously held by Northern Superior.
As result of the Transaction, Northern Superior now holds 35,686,686 Common Shares of ONGold or 72.35% of the issued and outstanding Common Shares.
Simon Marcotte, Chief Executive Officer of Northern Superior, stated: "The spinout of the Ontario Assets will allow Northern Superior and ONGold to unlock the considerable value of these world-class assets. Based on the Financings completed, the value of Northern Superior's 72.35% interest in ONGold is $18.2 million, and we see a great opportunity for value creation as ONGold advances the TPK Project and deploys its Ontario strategy. ONGold is now well-funded and led by a highly experienced management team. Northern Superior will remain a strategic shareholder and support ONGold in the execution of its ambitious strategy."
Rodney Barber, President of ONGold, added: "We are very pleased to have completed this transaction as we believe it is the first step to unlocking the value of the Ontario Assets. With a dedicated management team, we will be able to focus our time and attention on the large portfolio of assets in highly prospective geological environments. We are committed to working closely with our First Nations partners such that we uphold the highest standards of Indigenous consultation and work hand in hand to deliver economic opportunity and development to the communities at our projects."
Financings
As previously announced on April 2, 2024, the escrow release conditions of all 5,882,356 subscription receipts (the "ONGold Subscription Receipt") of ONGold have been satisfied and the proceeds from the purchase of the subscription receipts have been released from escrow (the "ONGold Financing"). As a result, the subscription receipts have converted into a total of 5,882,356 Common Shares in the capital of ONGold for gross proceeds of $3,078,605.56.
As previously announced on March 8, 2024, ONGold's wholly-owned subsidiary 1462356 B.C. Ltd ("Finco") closed its first tranche of its non-brokered private placement financing through the issuance of an aggregate of 3,575,901 subscription receipts of Finco (each, a "Finco Subscription Receipt") at a price of $0.51 per Subscription Receipt for gross proceeds of $1,823,709.51 (the "Finco Financing", together with the ONGold Financing, the "Financings").
Today, ONGold and the Company are further pleased to announce that Finco has closed its final three tranches of Finco Financing through the issuance of an aggregate of 650,586 Finco Subscription Receipts for gross proceeds of $331,798.86. Together with the subscription funds representing the proceeds of the first tranche of the Finco Financing and interest thereon, ONGold received aggregate gross proceeds of $2,157,543.10 from the Finco Financing.
The Finco Subscription Receipts issued pursuant to the Offering automatically converted, without payment of any additional consideration or further action on the part of the holder thereof, into one common share in the capital of Finco (each, a "Finco Share"), as the satisfaction of certain conditions precedent have been met. The Finco Subscription Receipts were created and issued pursuant to, and are governed by, the terms and conditions of a subscription receipt agreement dated March 1, 2024 (the "Subscription Receipt Agreement") between ONGold, Finco and Endeavor Trust Corporation, in its capacity as subscription receipt agent and escrow agent.
The net proceeds derived from the Financings will be used by ONGold to fund exploration and development of ONGold's mineral properties, as well as for working capital requirements and other general corporate purposes. ONGold paid certain eligible persons (each, a "Finder") a finder's fee of $25,160.94 in cash, and 43,382 warrants payable upon closing of the Financings. Each finder's warrant is exercisable for one Common Share at $0.51 for 2 years following the Trading Date.
The securities distributed pursuant to the Offering have not and will not be registered under the U.S. Securities Act of 1933 or any U.S. state securities laws and may not be offered or sold in the United States unless the securities have been registered under the U.S. Securities Act of 1933 and any applicable state securities laws, or in compliance with the requirements of an exemption therefrom.
The Transaction
In connection with the Transaction, ONGold has changed its name from "1348515 B.C. Ltd." to "ONGold Resources Inc." (the "Name Change").
Following the closing of the Offering and issuance of the Finco Shares, ONGold, Finco and 1477825 B.C. Ltd. ("BC Subco"), a wholly-owned subsidiary of ONGold, completed a three-cornered amalgamation under the laws of the Province of British Columbia, pursuant to which Finco shareholders (including former holders of the Subscription Receipts) received one Common Share in exchange for each Finco Share held, and Finco and BC Subco amalgamated (the "Amalgamation"). Immediately following the Amalgamation, the resulting entity, 1478091 B.C. Ltd. ("Amalco") became a wholly owned subsidiary of ONGold.

  • Discovery and definition of the gold grain-in-till dispersal apron: defined as 6 km wide by 11.5 km long, with gold grain-in-till anomalies up to 1263 grains per 10 kilogram till sample (see Northern Superior Resources press release, May 15, 2019). The size and scope of this dispersal train (one of the largest in North America) suggests multiple bedrock sources.
  • Discovery of several gold-bearing boulder dispersal trains returning gold assay values of up to 94.21 g/t Au.
  • Discovery of significant gold-bearing mineralization:
    • Drill hole TPK-10-004 returned 25.9 g/t Au over 13.5 m, including 46.0 g/t Au over 0.5 m, 139.4 g/t Au over 1.7 m, 749.0 g/t Au over 0.3 m and 127.0 g/t Au over 0.7 m (see Northern Superior Resources press release, February 27, 2018)
    • Drill hole TPK-11-013 returned 4.74 g/t Au over 6.8m, including 15.52g/t Au over 1.50m and 33.90g/t Au over 0.50m (see Northern Superior press release, April 13, 2011)
    • Drill hole TPK-13-030 intersected 59.60g/t Au, 92.30g/t Ag and 3.19% Cu over 0.50m
  • Discovery of eight gold-bearing sheaalteration zones, hosting up to 20 m wide intervals of anomalous gold values within envelopes of alteration and/or shearing within the Freure Lake Batholith (see Northern Superior Resources press release, May 15, 2019).
Annex Area
The second gold-bearing system is contained within the Annex area of the property. This system is defined by a gold grain-in-till dispersal corridor. As with the Big Dam dispersal train, the size of the anomaly and the distribution of pristine grains suggests multiple bedrock sources.

  • Mineralized boulders returned assay values of up to 727 g/t gold, 111 g/t silver, 4.1% copper (see Northern Superior Resources press release, June 25, 2012).
  • Drill hole NG-12-003C returned grades of up to 4.62 g/t gold over 5.5 m, including 20.8 g/t Au over 1.0m (see Northern Superior Resources press releases, June 25 and 26, 2012).
  • Drill hole NG-12-005C intersected 13.40 g/t Au over 1.90m (see Northern Superior Resources press releases, June 25 and 26, 2012).
The October Gold Project
The October Gold Project is a district scale property consisting of 1,281 claims covering an area of 265km2 located in northeastern Ontario, 105 km southwest of Timmins and within the Swayze Greenstone Belt. The property is accessible via an all-season highway and network of forestry roads. This property is situated approximately 35km northwest of IAMGold's Côté Lake project and approximately 50 km southeast of Newmont's Borden Lake mine.
The October Gold Project is in the traditional territory of the Flying Post and the Chapleau Cree First Nations. The October Gold property is thought to occur on a western extension of the Cadillac-Larder Lake break, straddling an approximate 15 km portion of the Ridout Deformation zone. Aside from a favorable structural association for gold mineralization and close proximity to an operating gold mine and a second in development, evidence for economic gold potential associated with the property includes widespread anomalous gold values from surface sampling (up to 11.50 g/t, obtained by NSR) and previous diamond drilling and two strong gold soil gas hydrocarbon anomalies (1.5 km x 3.0 km and 2.0 by 2.0 km).
In October 2021, a multifaceted exploration program was undertaken to define drill targets including: i) initial geological mapping; ii) prospecting; iii) rock sampling and channel sampling program; iv) property wide LiDAR survey; v) surficial (Quaternary) geological mapping; vi) orientation biogeochemical and geochemical survey; and vii) a detailed property wide helicopter magnetic survey.
From August to October 2022, reconnaissance geological mapping and prospecting were carried out by NSR. Anomalous gold values up to 0.65 g/t were found in three new areas and the historic Woman River Showing was located and sampled, yielding assays up to 11.50 g/t Au. Also, grab samples from the southwestern part of the property assayed up to 0.55 g/t Au, 1650ppm Cu and 4100ppm Zn, in separate samples. These results suggest the property is prospective for both gold and base metal deposits. Consequently, ground magnetometer surveys were completed in two areas: the South Benton grid for 176.45 line km and the Mallard West grid, for 132.55 line km. In addition, 4 diamond drill holes were drilled, for a total of 853m to better understand the geology around the Ridout Deformation Zone. Although intervals of sericite and silica alteration and pyrite mineralization were encountered, no significant gold assays were returned.
Option to Evolution Mining
On November 6, 2023, Northern Superior announced that it had granted Evolution Mining Limited an option to acquire a 75% undivided interest in the Company's October Gold Project (the "Option") by incurring an aggregate of $7 million in expenditures and making cash payments totaling $1.1 million. From the date herein, the payments related to the Option will be made to ONGold. Specific conditions are as follows:
https://preview.redd.it/438av7fc0mxc1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=d1621d50e1f9fac5eb81d339c31908b7d2c8a16a
In the event that Evolution completes the Option and acquires a 75% undivided interest in the October Gold Project, a joint venture shall be formed in accordance with the terms of the Agreement.
Other Properties
ONGold holds a 100% interest in additional Properties in northwestern Ontario, known as Rapson Bay, Thorne-Ellard and Meston Lake. Together, these comprise 2,334 cell claims, covering 43,791 ha.
Work on these properties by Northern Superior in 2011/2012 consisted of an airborne magnetometer survey, till sampling, geology, prospecting, limited induced polarization (IP) surveys and diamond drilling. This work was highlighted by the intersection of 0.83 g/t Au, 3.07 g/t Ag, 0.55% Cu and 0.028% Mo over a core length of 52.5 metres, including 1.83 g/t Au, 6.65 g/t Ag, 1.08% Cu and 0.059% Mo over 18.0 metres in hole WB-11-008C on the Rapson Bay Property (Norther Superior news release, Jan. 11, 2012). The property has lain idle since that time.

2024.04.25 19:41 drainbead78 A historical analysis of trades up for 1st round WRs.

Because I'm broken, I'm looking at every draft from 2004 to 2020, in the hopes that I can see enough of a trend that it can let us know whether or not trading up for a WR is a good idea. TLDR: Almost all the trades up were the wrong choice, with only one major trade being a clear win in Julio Jones.
2006: Pittsburgh traded up to 25 from 32 with the Giants to draft Santonio Holmes, who was very serviceable and caught that amazing pass in the Super Bowl, but never made a Pro Bowl. He stayed with the Steelers through the 2009 season, then the Jets from 2010-13, then retired after a season with the Bears in 2014. The Giants got Mathias Kiwanuka at 32, plus a 3rd and 4th that didn't really pan out. But Kiwanuka played his whole career with the Giants and won two Super Bowls. The Giants won here.
2009: Only a two-spot trade up, but the Eagles traded with the Browns and picked Jeremy Maclin at 19. With the 21 they got in return, Cleveland got Alex Mack. Maclin was a solid player who made a Pro Bowl in his last season with the Eagles. Mack was a 3x 2nd team All-Pro, 7x Pro Bowler, and made the NFL's 2010s All-Decade Team. I'm going to say that Cleveland won this one by a bit, even though the other pick they got was nothing special.
2010: This one is really interesting because a lot happened that started with a single trade. Denver traded up 2 spots with NE and got Demaryius Thomas. NE traded the pick they got from Denver to Dallas, who got Dez Bryant! NE picked up a draft pick in this trade that they used to pick Aaron Hernandez, plus another one they used on Devin McCourty. All of these picks would have been phenomenal had it not been for Hernandez being a little bit murdery. Dez and Thomas had similar careers as far as All-Pro and Pro Bowls are concerned, but I'd give the edge to Dez as far as who was the better WR. In order, if we're looking at just the players and their talent level and not counting what ultimately happened to Hernandez, I'd rank the winners of this trade in order as NE (trade down), Dallas (trade up), and Denver (trade up).
2011: This is the one we've all been waiting for, folks. Atlanta traded up a whole fucking lot to Cleveland to draft Julio Jones at 6. Cleveland got Atlanta's 27, 59, and 124 in this draft, along with a 1st and 4th in 2012. We absolutely know what Atlanta got in this--an eventual Hall of Famer IMO even with the backlog at WR. What did Cleveland manage? They turned the 27 into a 21 from KC and got OT Phil Taylor, who was not good. KC got WR Jonathan Baldwin, technically at 26 due to Baltimore's clock expiring, and he was also not good. They did turn Cleveland's 3rd into LB Justin Houston, who made a couple of Pro Bowls and an All-Pro with them, so there's that. The other two picks Cleveland got in this draft turned into Greg Little (meh) and Owen Marecic (FB who was out of football within 3 years). The 2012 ones were used on Brandon Weeden (yikes), and also packaged the 4th to trade up one spot with the Vikings in the 1st to get Trent Richardson. Minnesota got Matt Kalil at 4, as well as Jarius Wright with a 4th (not good, but at least made the field), and used the other two picks in trade packages but I've lost the attention span to see what they got from those. There's no way anyone but Atlanta wins this one, and Cleveland somehow managed to squander every pick they got from it.
2012: Jacksonville traded to 5 from 7 for Justin Blackmon, giving TB 7 and 101. TB got Mark Barron and packaged 101 to get back to 31 where they got Doug Martin. Given that Blackmon substance abused himself out of the league in two years, Tampa wins by default.
2013: The Rams traded up with us. They got our 7, which they used on Tavon Austin. We gave them our 71, but got their 16, 46, 78, and 222. We got EJ Manuel, Kiko Alonso, Marquise Goodwin, and some guy none of us have heard of with 222. Tavon was aight, but certainly not worth giving up those picks, even though we fucked up on EJ. Eventually we turned Kiko into Shady, so sometimes the W takes a while to materialize. As an aside, in this draft, DeAndre Hopkins was picked at 27. Goes to show you never can tell.
2014: We try to catch lightning in a bottle and duplicate the Julio Jones thing and fail fairly miserably, but it could have been much worse even though we could have drafted OBJ at 9 and a good player was also drafted at that spot. We got Sammy Watkins at 4. In exchange, we gave Cleveland our 2014 9 and a 19 and 115 in 2015. Cleveland traded up one spot from that 9 for a guy who was out of the league in 3 years, then the Vikings got Anthony Barr at the 9 we gave to Cleveland. Cleveland did nothing with either of our 2015 picks and there was nobody decent on the board even close to our 19, so at least there's that? Also in this draft, NO traded up from 27 to 20 for Brandin Cooks. Arizona didn't do anything with the New Orleans 1st rounder, but got Smoke at 91. Thought that was interesting.
2016: Somehow a trade that's both boring and interesting. Houston moved up a single spot to get Will Fuller in a trade with Washington. Will Fuller was aight. What makes it interesting was that Washington also picked a WR with the very next pick, Josh Doctson. So even though Fuller wasn't great, Washington completely cockblocked themselves because Fuller was demonstrably worse, somehow. Washington got a 2017 6th out of this deal, which they kept and turned into another WR who did nothing.
2020: Chill few years for WRs, but things get spicy here. There was the Diggs playepick trade, of course, but there was also the 49ers trading up to 25 from 31 for Brandon Aiyuk. In exchange, Minnesota got nobody in particular with the 3 picks they got (KJ Osborn at 176 was the best pick out of all of them and that's not saying much), so the trade up worked here. That said, Tee Higgins was still on the board and didn't go off until 33, so SF could have gotten a solid guy at 31 if they'd just stayed put. That said, their playstyles are so different that it's hard to tell whether Higgins would have fit as well with the 49ers as Aiyuk has. I'm not willing to give SF a clear win on here because they could have stayed put and gotten a guy who has had about as good a career as Aiyuk to this point.
Slightly longer TLDR: Of 11 total trades up for WRs, I'm going to be generous and give some of these trades (Dez, Cooks, Fuller, and Aiyuk) a half point each, because even though not all of them were great players, they were still better than what the other team got in return. That said, there were some extenuating circumstances that made it so that they weren't worth a full point. The only 100% win out of all 11 trades was Julio Jones, but a similar trade later (us and Watkins) was a mistake. Most of these were mid-round to late round trades, most were fewer than 5 spots, and only two were trades of 20+ spots. So out of 11 trades, we've got one clear win and 4 sorta-wins. Of the 4 sorta wins, only 2 players were ones that I'd want on my team (Dez and Aiyuk), the other two I counted as a half point only because they were at least better than what the team who traded down ultimately ended up doing with the picks they got. I'm not giving the Thomas trade a half point if only because of the quality of players who were drafted with the picks Denver gave up to get him, including Dez ultimately being taken at their original draft position. Seeing this written out, I'm not sure if trading up for a receiver is a great idea even though this is a deep WR draft. I already looked at the data from 2004 on in order to see how often WRs hit as opposed to miss, and the ones picked 20 or below were about a 1/3 success rate, whereas the ones picked 21-32 were closer to 50/50, so that is coloring my opinion as well. The main question is are we a WR away from a Super Bowl, and are we willing to potentially wreck the rest of Josh Allen's career if we get it wrong?
