2024.06.10 09:09 lexilous Should I leave science altogether if I have zero motivation for large portions of this job?

I’ve done my research in basically complete isolation aside from my advisors, almost never participating in the departments or networking or anything else. I’m truly not disinterested in these things, at least not inherently. I would love to be part of a team working towards real-world change or doing exciting collaborative research, and I have always fulfilled my immediate/mandatory obligations. My advisors have been passably happy with me and I have written 8 decent papers over the last 5 years. I’m just really bad at motivating myself in this type of remote-work environment. I probably average 4 hours of work a day because I’m distracted and feel zero interest a lot of the time, and work weekends and many holidays to compensate for the lack of productivity. I always end up being lazy and not putting in the activation energy required to do things like read papers or network, even though I know intellectually they are necessary in the long run. If something isn’t mandatory in some capacity (see: producing research), I probably don’t do it.
Yet, I enjoy some aspects of my research: the algorithms, the coding, the data analysis generally, and the creativity of it (until it’s no longer new and exciting lol).
My impression of successful scientists is as being very self-motivated, but I think that I lost a lot of my interest in learning once the rigid structure of K-12 education was removed, and I’ve always avoided other people more than I should.
My hope is to find an in-person role with more structure, because this is untenable in the long run (+ not very enjoyable). Wondering if anyone feels the same/has advice for how to fix just not caring enough. I’m at the point where my apathy has led to me having huge gaps in the fundamentals and career experience that make me question whether I can rightly continue. I already know I don't want to be a professor, but...should I try to find a different type of career altogether?

Has anyone figured out how to remap the
I just got an Onn 4k Pro, I'm super impressed with it. I've been previously using Chromecasts and this is miles better. The one issue I'm having is that I can't remap the giant ridiculous "Free TV" button in the middle. Almost all the other buttons are remappable, but not that one. At least not using Button Mapper Pro.

2024.06.10 08:57 AmmianusMarcellinus Hunt for Truth investigates thylacine sightings in Tasmania and abroad

https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/hobart-sundays/hunt-for-truth-tasmanian-tiger-series/103956772
An "enormous amount of work, blood, sweat and tears" has gone into documentary filmmaker Tim Noonan's new series Hunt for Truth: Tasmanian Tiger.
Pitched as a "live investigation" series, Noonan said he hopes the public will actively engage and tell the end of it.
Hunt for Truth takes the audience into remote parts of Tasmania and Papua New Guinea in the search for thylacines. It also features people who have searched for the tiger for decades or publicly shared possible sightings.
Noonan tapped into a University of Tasmania research team to access a sprawling trail camera network that covers remote locations in Tasmania. The network is for animal research but has the dual purpose of providing opportunity for a thylacine to be filmed, if the species were to still exist.
"I was lucky enough to go on a couple of expeditions," Noonan said.
"It was so intense...these guys are next level."
Research team member, Kenji Sabine, said the remote areas can sometimes take days or weeks to reach.
Tim Noonan and Kenji Sabine spoke with ABC's Lucie Cutting about their pursuit of the iconic species.

Just out of curiosity what kind of remote jobs are high paying ($100k+) but is purely writing based?
So no on calls with clients and a lot of talking and no coding/programming?
Are there any careers that offer these criteria?

2024.06.10 08:42 sshivaji Live Arabic TV via IPTV

I have an IPTV stick I bought from Amazon a while back. It's the T98 Mini HDR 4k. This has good coverage to watch live shows in many languages worldwide.
I am able to watch Arabic shows on it. In fact, it shows Arabic live tv channels live for almost all popular Arabic countries! The downside of the IPTV is you cannot get live captioning for most shows.
Overall, not bad value for the money, especially if you are living in a non Arab country. I suspect these channels are freely broadcasted worldwide, but the IPTV device makes it easy to watch them via remote control.
Appreciate any feedback. Do others watch Arabic on TV/IPTV or just resort to youtube/netflix?
I found the following channel groups for Arabic.
Arab Algerien Arab Iraq Arab Islamic - Useful for people who want to follow prayer recitations or interpretations. This is not my focus, but is very handy for muslims who want to learn Arabic and also practice their religion. Arab Egypt - I assume this is what people focusing on Egyptian/MSA arabic should mainly watch. Arab Netflix Arab Tunisie Arab Kuwait Arab Moroc Arab Dhabi - Just a few live channels from Abu Dhabi Arab Dubai Arab Lebanon Arab Saudi Arab Bein - Great for watching live sporting events Arab News - Al Arabiya, Al Jazeera are all available in Arabic Arab Kids - Kid shows, maybe useful for people who want easier to follow Arabic Arab MBC - Middle East Broadcasting Group Arab OSN - Dubai based Arabic Broadcast Arab Sports - Sports outside of Bein networks Arabic General - I found some documentaries and general channels here

2024.06.10 08:27 pigalles [TOMT] [Movie] 90s, Poor mother regifts doll house to her daughters for Christmas

This is probably an American made-for-TV movie. A woman lives with her two daughters in a remote area. I think it may be just out of town beyond a bridge. It's Christmas and there's a snow storm, and the mother wraps the doll house she gave her two daughters for Christmas the year before. Something about an attic, and it being very cold.

I'm interested in setting up a dedicated home server for my media library to grant remote access to friends and family to stream tv/movies. Ive setup a jellyfin server for my home, but am interested in buying lifetime plex pass and dedicate a budget mini PC as a server for remote streaming. I'm new to this realm and would love any advice/recommendations for an easy to setup and use server. What budget/easy setup systems do you all use?

2024.06.10 08:09 dannyazapata Quick question from a newbie to zed and programming in general.

So right now I use webstorm while learning html and css, I'm a relatively new programmer and I love all the nice features it has. So I really want to use zed, I love how fast and light weight it feels and overall am just a big fan of the overall "mission goal" of the dev team for the editor.
So, that all being said, I just had one or two things that I wanted to kind of prod and prick about to see where exactly the project is, since I feel like its actually somewhat close to being usable for me depending on if some or all of these features are or will be put in.
  1. Color icons, something like the atom material icon pack in jetbrains products or even a vscode icon pack is just a must for me, the mono-color icon stuff is very visually appealing, for about 10 seconds, then I really being to miss the very nice colored icons that also kind of give a nice visual for what my code base looks like IMO. This one I am hoping is in the soonTM coming list.
  2. Collapsable folders that are empty, so if you have an assets folder and inside that only an images folder, they collapse visually into assets/folders/content.png or whatever else. Not a deal breaker by any means but def a nice thing to have.
  3. Better auto complete for html tags? I am by no means expecting IntelliJ/WebStorm level auto completion (or at least not right now) but here are some weird things, from a begginer programmers persepective i should add:
  1. Live-server plugin or built in support, the editor should work for me not force me to use an npm package and include a config file just to support what I feel like should be an auto include for any editor that wants to support live viewing of a web page. But again, I imagine this has to do with my experience with web stuff and that the more serious programmers don't need that due to frameworks providing built in live-server-esque stuff already.
  2. Somewhere I can go to see what I can actually use for settings. It comes with great defaults but if i want to change anything, I have literally 0 idea how to do so. 0, nada, nothing on how to for example, enable collapsing empty directories. That feature could totally exist but I just have 0 idea how to find it, and I don't think diving through the default settings or trying to get the autocomplete for settings to show me the right thing is even a remotely serious suggestion, at least from me who is still in school learning to code, even tho I do spend a great deal of my personal time learning.
I am super close to just using this full time, I really feel like color icons and a better way to look at what settings and related options are available would probably be all I need, maybe better auto completion for html stuff or an option for it would be nice especially the better indenting for having a tag on two lines, but to be honest I feel like this is such a good editor that I am this close to recommending my CS department that I reguarly talk to to start recommending it instead of bluejay or replit cause its just that good and I defintely want to start using this full time instead of IntelliJ or Webstorm or even Neovim cause this feels like the editor I've kinda been looking for. Neovim feels too close to the metal/configurable and IntelliJ/WebStorm feels like the exact oppisite, trying to shoot birds with a golden WW2 style canon.
Sorry for the long read, and apologies if these have been asked before, love the project and best of luck to the team :)

2024.06.10 07:53 Negative_Pass_1545 eSIM keeps failing to activate

I'm traveling internationally right now and I've had zero service the whole time because my phone continuously fails to activate the eSIM. My phone is an "older model" (12 pro) that has the SIM card from my old iPhone 8 in it.
I was on the phone with customer service for 2 hours this morning trying to figure it out, and we thought we fixed it with AT&T remotely activating it, but it failed for the third time. I've tried buying eSIM QR codes online too, but when I scan them, I get an error message saying the eSIM is not supported and "not compatible with this iPhone". Portable WiFi is not accessible to me right now so I'd really appreciate having service that works. Any ideas as to what's going wrong/how to fix it? I originally thought that the old iPhone 8 SIM card might've been the problem but customer service said it wasn't, so not sure what else could be problematic. Overall very frustrating.

2024.06.10 07:52 Full_Newt9714 My mom’s extremely mentally ill and I think my dad made her that way

Growing up my parents would constantly fight and not like a normal couple. It was mostly my dad drinking, yelling and screaming at my mom and breaking random shit too like dishes and stuff. My mom was quiet and would just take it, and I was the youngest kid out of 3 so apparently it was a lot worse before I was born, both for my mom and siblings. My dad would beat my siblings and yell at my mom so much she attempted once, and I just know all this from my siblings so I don’t even know what to believe. Then there’s also the fact that apparently my dad made my mom get abortions cuz he wanted sons and he didn’t want too many kids too but my mom wanted kids cuz she was lonely, and there’s so many fucking issues in that alone. For me as I got older it was more my dad mellowing out and being calmer, friendlier and more normal while my mom’s mental health slowly deteriorated. She would do stuff like break shit like dishes and tv remotes and she would throw physical tantrums like a kid during random arguments which started over little stuff. Now at this point rn I’m 18 both my siblings moved out and I’m stuck alone in the house with my parents. Now my mom’s at her worst and she spits at my dad, hits him, and constantly screams at him cuz she’s really paranoid and thinks he’s cheating and other stuff which I know he’s not. She does stuff like take his car keys, break his phone, and throw random dishes and food all over the floor. This is literally every single day, and mostly in the middle of the night while my dad’s trying to sleep. He’s mellowed out more now and he gets abused by my mom and I wake up random nights at like 1 in the morning while my dad’s downstairs sobbing like a kid and he tells me my mom hits him and I try to call 911 and he says don’t do that. It was bad enough growing up but I would block most of it out and I don’t even know when it got this bad. And the worst part is I know other ppl have toxic parents but not like this, it makes me feel disgusted and ashamed wishing I was never born to them. I visit my siblings when I can but it’s not enough. I’m about to go to college and I’m trying so hard to get a job so I can move out but I’m in nyc so it’s really hard. Everything’s so fucking expensive. I feel like killing myself but I’m too much of a fucking pussy and another thing is I got a cat and I don’t wanna leave her in this shit. I’m at such a loss as to what the fuck I’m supposed to do. I’m just venting and I’ll probably delete this post in a while cuz I’m so ashamed of this shit.

2024.06.10 07:51 geauxwave Reflex Adapt or BlisSTer?

I’m planning my first MiSTer build and trying to decide between the Reflex Adapt and the BilsSTer (EDIT: and the Daemon USB). They both (all) look like great products. I like the idea of being able to use the controller for the menu navigation, and I believe both (all) of these allow for that. Zero/low lag is also very important to me, so I don’t want to do normal USB.
My primay focus is NES, SNES, Genesis, and Arcade. Playing from the couch on a 65" 4K sony LED TV.
I’ll be getting HDMI adapters so I can use my original controllers (EDIT: unless I get the Daemon USB). I won’t be using light guns as I don’t have a CRT, unfortunately.

REFLEX ADAPT

I’m leaning towards the Reflex Adapt because although I know it’s using USB, a 1ms lag seems acceptable to me. I actually like that it’s a separate little box rather than part of the stack because I plan to use Retro Frog’s mini console case.

BLISSTER

But then again, that zero lag of the BlisSTer LL is certainly appealing. I also want to be able to use, for example, my NES controller for TG16 (I think that’s not possible with normal SNAX?). I don’t really love that BlisSTEr LL mode requires special LLI core forks.

DAEMON USB

EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention, I'm also considering the Daemon USB Triple (SEGA / NES / SNES). It seems that it functions much like the Reflex Adapt? I could just buy the triple one for 40€ and it would cover all my needs to start out with, which is nice!

SNAC/SNAX

Or do I just go the normal old SNAC/SNAX route and use a little mini USB keyboard remote that I have to navigate the menus? Is the 1ms of lag reduction worth the "hassle" that comes with SNAC, in your opinion?
What would you guys do if you were planning a couch console setup today and have a collection of original controllers (I have extension cables for things like my NES Advantage, as well as 8bitdo 2.4ghz controllers, so the distance from the TV to the couch is not a problem)?
Thanks in advance for the advice.

Sag seeking career suggestions
Hi, I’m looking for some career, business, and side hustle advice. So far, I’ve worked as a soccer coach, automotive technician, mover, housekeeping, and a wide range of Back of House positions.
I’m looking for recommendations for remote work, in-person work, businesses and side hustles I can do with a pickup truck, and careers/businesses in the automotive industry.
I’ve considered doing bookkeeping or copywriting for remote work. My town already has a lot of junk removal, yard work, and auto detailing businesses. I strongly prefer to work alone for physical positions and am open to collaborating on intellectual work. I also am open to astrology work.
For skills, I am an above average writer, have decent sense of design and form, and when I’m in the right headspace, have a facility for Spanish and to a lesser degree I know some Portuguese. I aspire to be a polyglot, learn to code, and have several physical inventions planned. For higher education, I have an AA in Psychology and intend to have at least a Bachelors in some other degree, along with potentially a bachelor's in psychology. I am enrolled in a roughly yearlong automotive technician training program.
