As some of you know, living in a heavily populated city like NYC has loads of benefits, but it also comes with a few annoying setbacks, such as the difficulty of making long-term or interesting friends who share similar interests or backgrounds as you get older. Not being from here can make it even more challenging.
With books like Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community and Out of My Skull: The Psychology of Boredom coupled up with these 2 articles: Want to Make a New Friend? How Much Money Have You Got? & The Loneliness of the American Worker that I recently read from the Wall Street Journal. I got super fired up about posting this. Things are getting worse out there, & as someone who’s into sports, it’s a little challenging to find people who are able & willing to watch or go to games, let alone be friends with them.
So, I am a 29-year-old black male lurker here. With the aim of stepping out of my comfort zone & meeting new people to develop long-term friendships with, I purchased 3 full-season memberships for the NY Liberty, NY/NJ GothamFC, & NYCFC. I’m looking for female & male friends around my age (25–35ish). I don’t think I have a number as to how many friends I am looking for, but let’s just go ahead & say maybe 10 females & 10 males to even things out. Please keep in mind that this is not an R4R post & is very NYC-based sports team-related. I noticed that on Reddit, women’s posts about friendship tend to get more engagements & answers, so hopefully this gets some traction & I get to e-meet new people that I can physically meet in real life on a biweekly or even monthly basis. If you read this and feel like it's not for you, then that’s fine, but if you know a friend who’s looking for friends, then please kindly share this with them and/or introduce us. I’m looking for people around the same age, as I don’t have lots of NYC-based friends in general. I currently work as a social worker. My simple pleasures are trivia, sushi, museums, karaoke, bowling, scenic drives, working out, my curated playlists, the New York Times’ games, a comedy & theater show, & coconut cake & ice cream. I love cats. I am a Libra with an ENTJ personality type. I am Caribbean. I love food. I love anything coconut-flavored. I studied and love theater, so I like to enjoy good plays, musicals, and movies. I love going to the movies. My Regal Theater is about 12 minutes from me. This year I’ve seen 106 movies so far (a few of my favorites: The Holdovers, Anatomy of a Fall, Past Lives, Yodha, Dogman, Seagrass, & Cabrini. Sorry Challengers didn’t make the cut, haha). I love museums (a few of my favorites: the Brooklyn Museum, the Met Cloisters, & AMNH). I also love good comedy: sitcoms, stand-ups, and improv. Although I am more of a fast-paced person, I do love classical music. I’m straight. I’m spiritual but not religious. I am an extrovert. No allergies. I am very proactive. I am impatient sometimes. Little fun fact about me: almost everything I own or wear is grey/gray but my favorite color is red. I live alone. I don’t drink alcohol, & I don’t smoke/vape. No substance use at all, but I’m open to being friends with people who do these things as long as they aren't around me when doing so. I don’t play video games; I don’t stream. I have them, but I don’t necessarily use mainstream social media. Loneliness is a b-word & I can be a homebody & a bit reserved sometimes. I consider myself to be a sapiosexual, so evidently I am an avid audiobookworm—I have listened to 75 books so far this year through my Libby & Audible apps (a few of my favorites would be: Ikigai, Feminism is for Everybody, The Art of Logic in an Illogical World, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, I am Not Sydney Poitier, The Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao & Heartburn). I try to listen to a book a month. I closely follow and like to talk about international and national politics. I think I get bored easily, so I like to talk & have meaningful conversations. It doesn’t have to be “deep conversation,” but something that can stimulate and challenge my brain & point of view. My apology language is planned change, & my love language is quality time (doing something) so I am looking for platonic female & male friends that I can go to games with & spend quality time with doing other things that we have in common as well. The Copa America and the Euro are starting soon. Let’s not forget the World Cup. I live in Canarsie, Brooklyn, & I drive, so maybe we can tag along to games sometimes, etc. I have an ACE score of 1. One social cause that I am passionate about is homelessness. I have a fear of heights. I'm very big on respecting people's personal space & boundaries, so I don't like people who are always late. My motto is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Around the right person, I am stupidly funny but can be too blunt sometimes; therefore, one thing that I started doing is checking in & asking to see if I have said anything unkind, mean, rude, or condescending to whoever I’m talking to, and if so, I ask what they are so I can be cognizant of them, & I also ask the person if they feel heard, understood, & respected after apologizing & talking about what I said or did that bothered them. I looooove football (soccer). My favorite teams are Argentina, Barcelona, Manchester City, Inter Milan, PSG, Borussia Dortmund, NYCFC, & NY/NJ GothamFC, as mentioned above. Obviously, the Libs are the best WNBA team out there. I like to think of myself as someone who’s securely-anxious in friendship. My spirit animal is a bull. I am open-minded, so I am willing to learn & compromise. I am not diagnosed with any mental or physical illnesses. I'm all about the simple pleasures in life. If you drink alcohol it will make it worse! You must stop drinking!
You must MOVE a lot you cant just sit and do nothing you must move your body around like Excising, Walking or doing whatever just move.
You must drain the pus by the doctor or yourself keep the wounds clean and don't sweat stay in cool environments.
if its really inflamed and big in size ready to burst painful take a salt water warm bath or shower it will open up your skin pores and reduce the pain.
Take paracetamol if its painful
Sweating and heat makes it worse in general unless the boil is ready to be drained then heat is good.
Start with what your comfortable with what I mean is take it easy when fasting! Don't go staving yourself to death you have to be persistent and make it a daily routine.
Personally I eat once a day! and have a cheat day in a week meaning I eat breakfast lunch and dinner if I feel like eating them.
If you eat every 6 hours make it 10 hours basically you must feel hungry for a couple hours daily the longer the better to reduce insulin resistance you can not do this in a day or two it takes time! just like how your hair grows it takes time! little by little, step by step, day by day.
If you can't fast for that long then eat your meals but in very small portions 1/2 of what you normally eat.
Do not eat anything 3 hours before bed expect water and pills!
Remember you can drink wateliquids as much as you want during the fasting or at any period of time.
Consult your doctor about fasting I'm not responsible for anything you do.
Get yourself Vitamin D tablets or even better go out and get sun exposure.
Take Zinc and Copper tablets you can find these premixed together.

Takes time depending on your immune system and I know doing these things is working on me, my face is 90% healed my armpit is 80% healed and my groin is 90% healed and no more flare ups or new boils or tunnelling.

Things I have done to try to manage it.
Tried Acne products, Homeopathy medication, Tea tree oil, Apple cider vinegar, Etc.. little to no effect.Tried many antibiotics over the years from GP, little to no effect.
The doctors are dumb and stupid and don't think for them self's they follow a book by the FDA and never cure the disease they only put a bandage on it to cover it up that's all they do! Same goes for any other diseases! If they cure you, you will never go back to them.

I’ve been playing for around few months now and I noticed that other than my stamina, my cramps are a big weakness of mine. I always try my 100 percent in every match (especially footwork and overhead shots) and most of the time I tire myself out quite quick with some soreness in my thighs but I continue playing a bit longer then gulp down water afterwards. Most of the time I have cramps after a few matches and I just cannot move my legs, I would try to continue but only working on my shots. I have tried stretching a lot before my matches especially my thigh and calves but it has very little effect, and I still cramp EVERY TIME I play. Am I just working too hard? Or should I get checked by a doctor?

I've spent two months trying out the most renowned Skyrim modlists, and I can honestly say that if a list sounds good to you: just go ahead and stick with it. Every list is pretty much fantastic and the people in charge of creating them are extremely talented, maybe I say this because I have zero modding abilities, but as far as I understand it, it's way more complicated than just downloading them and adding them to a folder, they have a specific load order, patches, optimization, plugins, some mods overwrite others, they have to make sure it's stable, some mods are no longer supported once Skyrim is updated, etc. (Consider supporting your favorite modder if they have a Patreon or something like that.) So I decided to give you a little bit of my experience with the lists that I tried so that you don't waste so much time downloading, installing and trying them out like I did:
(Note that everything I say here is entirely my opinion and I still encourage you to try the lists that sounds good to you and decide for yourself, this is just my personal experience with the world of Skyrim modding and WJ lists over the last two months)
I started with Lost Legacy not even knowing what Legacy of The Dragonborn was, it is a great list, but after a while, the sheer amount of content felt more like quantity over quality, it was exciting at the beginning, especially since it was my first list, but it started to feel overwhelming after a while, I stuck with this list for over 50+ hours, but after I discovered the Dragonborn Museum, I felt like I needed something a little bit more condensed, this list has over 5,000 LOTD displays iirc, it has several halls and multiple display rooms, I thought that I could stick with it, but honestly, it wasn't practical, I realized that it would just consume me, honestly, this is a list where 2,000+ hours wouldn't be near enough if you want to fully complete it, also it's not very polished, it's just a little glitchy, the combat is kinda basic, it was surprisingly stable which is the most important aspect for me, but the list is just so overly loaded, that I felt like it was gonna crash at any moment (and it did like 3 times in my 50 hour playthrough and I have a 4080 Super rig), maybe I'll return to it at some point, it has A LOT of DLC sized quests and expansions, and it has the Elysium Estate which a lot of other modlists do not have, that house was the best part of the whole list for me, if you want to collect a lot of shit like me, but find Legacy of The Dragonborn overwhelming, you can just fill out that house and it would be just as satisfying.
Next, I tried Nordic Souls, and honestly it's just PERFECT, at least for what I was looking for, this is what I mean when I ask you not to make the same mistakes I did, because when I say that it is perfect, it really is: it's stable, packed full of content, it has great armors, weapons, enemies, followers, the feeling of the list is just...right. Trust me, I can not praise enough just how great this list is, and how fucking stable it is considering the amount of mods it has and the content it adds! Right now I have over 100+ hours on it and I haven't had a SINGLE crash, it's ridiculous, not even Vanilla is as stable as this list, everything about it feels like it was supposed to be there from the beginning, the best way I can describe this list is as the TRUE Remastered version of Skyrim in 2024, as if Bethesda decided to acknowledge the sheer amount of great content the fans have made over the years and decided to seamlessly incorporate it into their game, nothing feels out of place, nothing feels shoehorned, it's amazing, I constantly have to Google if something is a mod or not, because it honestly feels like it was supposed to be there in Vanilla, the perks have been overhauled so the combat and progression feel fun but not OP, I don't know how the author managed to keep the overall gameplay interesting even after 100+ hours. And boy is it a beautiful list, it's graphically gorgeous, and everything just has such a polished feeling, no sudden crashes, no clipping through the floor, no random NPCs or mammoths floating in the sky, no wonky combat or broken bullshit, the sound, the ambience, the textures, the awesome feeling that you truly are growing as the Dragonborn of Legend is just...sublime. I love Skyrim, and for me, this is the way it should be played. (Not everything is perfect though, the cloaks kinda clip through the equipment, and again, no Elysium Estate for hoarders like me, but it has The Vault of The Dovakhiin which is a good enough replacer.)
And this is where I made the mistakes that I shouldn't have done: I kept looking at lists, I kept looking at their full load order and comparing them, I kept watching YouTube videos, spent hours looking at all the mods that Nordic Souls didn't have, and it became a FOMO festival, I couldn't stop thinking about the features that the list I chose didn't incorporate, I found that some lists had amazing modern combat, like Wunduniik, which also looks fantastic by the way, but for starters: it doesn't have any of the Anniversary paid content, (which is a big must for me, I've already paid for it, I sure as hell will play it), no good players homes, and honestly it's VERY buggy and glitchy, the combat is great, but the hits just don't connect as they should, it doesn't feel well-polished or stable, I wouldn't trust a long playthrough with this list.
I tried other lists like Tempus Maledictum, that claims to have the most amount of DLC sized quests and added content. but after a few minutes I noticed... no music, no freaking music, ANYWHERE, I don't know if it was due to a mod or not, but honestly, the music is a big part of what makes Skyrim great, (and also Faendal fucking attacked me for no reason when I entered Riverwood for the first time, which made me feel bad, I thought we were friends) and here's the thing about DLC-sized mods: they feel kinda off, for lack of a better term, I'm not saying they're bad or anything, ( for example: Carved Brink has some fucking impressive locations that made me feel like I was playing something like Destiny or something, and Clockwork is fucking TERRIFYING, it's absolulety nerve-wracking, honestly, that shit made put down my headphones and literally cover my eyes in fear like a little girl), but something about them feels off, like they're not really part of the world (I know it sounds obvious since they're mods, but I can't find a better way to describe them) and sometimes the rewards are OP, not my cup of tea, but if you can find a way to fix that issue or ignore it, it's a great list.
I tried other lists like Licentia Black, I didn't care much about the NSFW stuff, but honestly, it didn't feel forced most of the time, you can even disable the dialogue options that lead you to the spicy situations with merchants and other NPCs (literally ANY other NPC), I tried it because someone said it was like Nordic Souls but with Legacy of The Dragonborn and with other mods I wanted on that list, but I just couldn't continue with it because it crashed EVERY SINGLE TIME I died, it's packed full of content, but something so unstable was impossible for me to play, it also had Static Leveling (a leveling system similar to Fallout 4 where you choose the perks you want to spend points on) which was simply not for me.
The last list I tried was LoreRim, and man, this list is also extremely close to perfect, it has almost every fantastic mod I liked, it's stable and interesting (its author, biggieboss, is one of my favorite YouTubers and he spends hours making sure the lists is stable and fun and he truly seems passionate about what he does) the weapons, items, enemies, graphics, and overall feeling is just absolutely fantastic, however this is a Requiem list, and for me it's just too difficult, it completely overhauls the game to make it feel as immersive as humanly possible, even the gold has weight, maybe it's a skill issue, but it makes Skyrim feel like a completely different game, maybe I will play it after I'm done with Nordic Souls because they say that the Requiem progression is just addictive, and this list is as polished and optimized as it gets, it makes you work for every single victory and it feels like the type of satisfaction you get out of Souls games, but I'm not just not ready yet, I'm still waiting for a list that the author promised in his Discord about a more Vanilla list with modern graphics and combat, and honestly, it sounds fantastic, but that brings me back to my original point:
TL:DR: Find a list you like and stick with it, don't waste time thinking about all the mods the list you chose doesn't have, I'm not saying that you shouldn't try at least a few of them, but once you find something that works, play that one and spend 1,000+ hours on it! This game is worth all of your time, and the modded experience is practically unmatched by any other game, don't think of all the mods you wish were there, if you choose a list and something feels off, you have two options: you can fix it yourself or try to ignore it, but if it's really something that makes the game feel bad (constant crashes, strange content, a gameplay mechanic that you don't like, etc.), you won't get used to it when you are 40 hours deep in your playthrough, trust me, it will ruin everything, especially if you don't have the modding ability needed to fix it like me, if that happens, try another list that sounds similar or, if you're able, try to add the fix yourself, (but if you do that, don't pester the authors on ways to fix it if it breaks, it's your own responsibility), but overall, once you find a list that you feel comfortable with, just play it, they are all great in their own way because they are based on a great game. I wish someone have told me that a month ago, but I don't regret it, I've had a lot of fun with the lists and I learned a ton of things of the community of one of the greatest games ever made. No list will ever be perfect or will have everything that you wish it had, I still wish there was a list like Nordic Souls with modern combat, the Elysium Estate and the same amount of added content, graphics, items and stability, I've also heard great things about similar lists like Fahluaan or The Nico Experience which I'm sure I will try out some day, however, Nordic Souls is just so amazing and polished that I'm able to ignore the things that I wish it had or that I don't 100% like, also, I don't have the time or expertise to learn how to make and fully optimize a modlist, that's why these lists and the authors that make them are so amazing and deserve your support, consider spending a few bucks on their Patreons or YouTube channels, because I'm positive that Skyrim is the best modding canvas gaming has created, and I'm truly thankful for the work its talented fans have put into the game throughout all these years.

I have trauma (won’t go into it, dw) so I know that’s gonna play a part in not feeling like my body is home to what my brain feels like. I feel like I’m not capable of describing what I’m feeling to the fullest extent where it’ll make sense but I’m gonna try real hard.
I’m afab. Starting when I was quite young, bad things happened. Ever since I can remember I’ve never felt like there was a huge disconnect from body and mind/soul. At the same time I was having uncomfortable feelings about my female anatomy I was wanting a perfect hourglass figure. I don’t like the way clothes feel touching my body which I attribute to the sensory issues the ‘tism gives me but having clothes touch my breasts makes me think about my breasts “too much” and I’m like “oh god… why do I have these things. I never wanna have a thought about them again.” But at the same time if I got top surgery I would lose my ever loving mind. I have a very big fear of breast cancer because I can’t mentally handle a mastectomy. I need to be curvy but at the same time it kinda sucks.

I’m afab. Starting when I was quite young, bad things happened. Ever since I can remember I’ve never felt like there was a huge disconnect from body and mind/soul. At the same time I was having uncomfortable feelings about my female anatomy I was wanting a perfect hourglass figure. I don’t like the way clothes feel touching my body which I attribute to the sensory issues the ‘tism gives me but having clothes touch my breasts makes me think about my breasts “too much” and I’m like “oh god… why do I have these things. I never wanna have a thought about them again.” But at the same time if I got top surgery I would lose my ever loving mind. I have a very big fear of breast cancer because I can’t mentally handle a mastectomy. I need to be curvy but at the same time it kinda sucks.

Kill Devil Falls - Do not let the time stamp or placement fool you. Around 6:30 in, the jam shifts to light and airy interplay with major key dominance that then turns to effects-and-synth-driven goop and grime. Eventually comes back to finish and end on the "Kill Devil Falls" theme.
Tweezer - Jam is fairly straightforward for the first few minutes, but then there's a key modulation (type II activity afoot) and a funkaliciously melodic bridge of sorts occurs, before Page hops on the synth and Trey deploys some echoflex and then envelope filter effects. Soon melodic tension builds--slllowwwly though--courtesy of Page Mike and Trey, until there's a massive Floyd-esque echoplextastic dissonant sustained release/peak, of sorts. OF SORTS. Sorry this is quite long, i just feel so hopeless.
So I first got my period when I was 11, the month before my 12th birthday in 2016. And going throughout school I had a somewhat normal cycle until 2018. I noticed that I’d be up to 2 weeks late, and sometimes my period would be super short and only last for 3 days. My typical period lasted about 7 days. Then in 2019, I started to get super insecure with my body. I hated how big my chest was getting and I didn’t like where I was holding my weight. So I developed an eating disorder where I had toast for breakfast, played video games until midnight, then I would eat more toast or sometimes soup for dinner. I went from 185lbs to 169lbs. And that’s when I stopped having my period. I went to the hospital for severe stomach pain and was told that my stomach acid was eating my stomach lining, and that I had to start eating a normal diet. After eating more regularly my weight went back to 185lbs.
From June 2019 until November of 2020, I had no period. In June 2020 my mom passed away and it was super hard on me. My dad made me see a therapist and she advised that I get my hormones in balance to see if that was why my depression was so bad. Before seeing a gyno, on Halloween 2020 I was getting ready to go out when before I left I used the bathroom and saw that I was bleeding. I begged my dad to go get me tampons and by the time he got back, the bleeding had stopped. So I finally got to see a Gyno and started birth control in November 2020. I got my period while taking the placebo pills like normal. Until about two months into taking birth control, I started getting my period the week before my placebo pills and when I took the placebo pills, my period would stop. My gyno told me that my period would be irregular for the first few months, but then my periods become so heavy, I would use Super+ tampons and would have to put in a new one because I would start leaking after two hours of having it in. My cramps became unbearable, the bleeding was horrible, and the last period on that birth control lasted almost a month. While taking the birth control, my chest went up two cup sizes and I had gained 15lbs. I stopped that bc. My last period in 2021, I weighed 200lbs.
From February 2021 to June 2023, I had no period. I moved across the country and saw a new gyno, I started eating more frequently and gained 30lbs. The gyno had me try maybe 5 different birth controls, and all of them either made me bleed for months straight with no break, made me constipated, or made my cramps so bad that I almost had to go to the ER. The last birth control I was on, around September 2023, made my cramps so bad that I couldn’t stand up straight, I was nauseous, hot flashes, and I almost passed out from the pain. I lasted maybe 3 days on my period on that birth control, when I couldn’t take the cramps anymore.
I stopped the bc and stopped getting my period, with no more debilitating cramps. i had a non-invasive ultrasound done to check for PCOS and my doctor told me that “i have no cysts, or at least big enough to cause the pain I felt.” So my gyno had no idea what was wrong with me. I felt so hopeless.
I started my first job and walked almost 10k steps a day, 4 days a week. I lost 17lbs and had more energy, but still no period. My job stressed me out to all hell, so I quit and immediately gained those 17lbs back.
So now it’s May 2024, I’m 20 years old, and I haven’t had a normal period since I was 14. I’m so frustrated with my health and I try every single day to eat right, I eat more protein, I do small workouts throughout the day, and I stopped snacking on so much processed food. I feel so hopeless, I have no idea what’s wrong with me, I stopped seeing my gyno because it felt like she wasn’t listening to me. I wanna give up, but I’m so insecure in my body, I feel like a man and I feel like I look like one too. I have so many questions: Why was my period more regular from 11-14 than it is now? Why was my period manageable as a 14 year old but now is debilitating? Now I’m just lost. Does anyone know what could be wrong with me? Hyperthyroidism? Insulin resistance? PCOS? Endometriosis? Something else? Or does anyone relate? If so, what could I do start feeling better with more energy, lose weight, start my period again?

I started my first job and walked almost 10k steps a day, 4 days a week. I lost 17lbs and had more energy, but still no period. My job stressed me out to all hell, so I quit and immediately gained those 17lbs back.
So now it’s May 2024, I’m 20 years old, and I haven’t had a normal period since I was 14. I’m so frustrated with my health and I try every single day to eat right, I eat more protein, I do small workouts throughout the day, and I stopped snacking on so much processed food. I feel so hopeless, I have no idea what’s wrong with me, I stopped seeing my gyno because it felt like she wasn’t listening to me. I wanna give up, but I’m so insecure in my body, I feel like a man and I feel like I look like one too. I have so many questions: Why was my period more regular from 11-14 than it is now? Why was my period manageable as a 14 year old but now is debilitating? Now I’m just lost. Does anyone know what could be wrong with me? Hyperthyroidism? Insulin resistance? PCOS? Endometriosis? Something else? Or does anyone relate? If so, what could I do start feeling better with more energy, lose weight, start my period again?

Ancient History
Growing up, I was always pretty active and started running in High School. Going into my Junior year, I began to take running much more seriously and made steady progress with a 5K PR of 17:06 at the State meet. Going into my Senior year, I had been training 6 days a week with the team and hitting 40-60 miles a week consistently with hopes of going low 16's by the end of the XC season. Then, disaster. Pain in my quads was getting worse and worse until a bone scan finally revealed bilateral femoral stress fractures - one midway along the midline of each femur. I was devastated, and completely stopped running from August until February. By then, it seemed like things were getting better and I was able to put in some good miles for the spring Track season. I was always a better mid-distance runner, and was able to snag a few PRs of 2:00 in the 800m (agony, 1s off) and 4:35 in the 1600m. By that point I was basically over running, completely burned out and sick of running.10 years later...
I wake up one morning in April of 2017 to take a shower and realize that I have no temperature sensation in my right leg whatsoever. I'm now finishing grad school, I've moved across the country, first kid on the way and due in a matter of weeks. I'm not working out much at this point, maybe running every few months at best. Stress is high. I go to urgent care and the last 6 months of subtle pins and needles on the left side of my face and the occasional double vision start to make a lot more sense. Multiple Sclerosis. It's not a death sentence, but I felt like the world was ending. My kid was due in 4 weeks and now my future was completely uncertain. A month or two, an MRI and one spinal tap later and the diagnosis is confirmed.
Training
Fortunately, new medicines have made MS much more manageable and I was lucky to have a great medical team. Perhaps the most important thing to keep the disease in check beyond highly potent immunosuppressants is regular exercise. Time to start running again.Starting out was rough, but within a few weeks I was able to feel ok running 15-20 miles a week in the 8-10 min/mile range. I keep that up consistently for a year or so and run my first 10K with a time of 44:42, which I was pretty proud of at the time. Things are going well for a while, second kid is on the way, my MS seems mostly stable, albeit leaving me with some permanent loss of function of my left leg (these gait issues will come up later), pins and needles in my right leg, and fatigue. Then COVID hits. Now I'm at home, with much more time. I increase my mileage a bit, now running 20-30 miles a week but not really following any particular plan or anything. Move across country, keep running when I can.
Mid-2023 I decided to finally take it up a level. I was mostly using the Garmin Daily Workouts at this point and running consistently 30 miles a week. I decided to run my first half-marathon, just as a virtual training run, and felt pretty good about my time with an 8:24/mi average pace. Going into fall, I juggled some illnesses but kept running. Unfortunately around November I started to develop Sesamoiditis and had to really limit my running to 35-40 miles per week. I ran a Christmas 5K with a time of 19:14, which felt pretty good, but was still dealing with the Sesamoid issue.
Over time, the Sesamoid started to resolve but I would occasionally feel some twinges in my right Adductor. Nevertheless, I felt like the time was now to try for my first Marathon. Around February, I finally committed and decided to do the Pfitz 12/55 plan. I had been consistently in the 35-40 range for a few months, so felt like I had a decent base. At first, I found the plan quite difficult to deal with. It was the most structured running I had done since high school, but after a while my schedule adapted and I was hitting all of the workouts. About halfway through, the Adductor issue started to really rear its ugly head. It seems like it's a combination of gait issues from my MS as well as compensating for the weakened Sesamoid. I attempted to strength train, but had to back off a bit.
At best, I was able to hit 53 miles a week, occasionally having to skip some workouts for cross-training or rest. I felt like I nailed the 20 mile runs pretty well and overall the LRs felt good. I ran one 5K as a kind of "tune-up" with a time of 19:21, pacing a friend, so putting in maybe 80-90% effort. Due to injuries and some travel I was never able to do one of the longer tune-up races. Unfortunately, the Adductor issue continued to wax and wane, finally flaring up badly about 3 weeks out from my target marathon. After a consultation with Ortho, I was told to stop running cold turkey for two weeks prior to the Marathon, and then a follow-up last Friday I was given the green light to try it ... cautiously ... but consider dropping out if it is too painful.
Pre-Race
My taper was compromised pretty heavily by the injury, so I was really feeling worried about how the race would go. That said, I knew that the training was done at this point, and so an extended rest shouldn't make TOO much of an impact if I feel ready. I carb-loaded three days out and tried to take on a lot of fluids. While my injury was feeling better, the next worry was the temperature. Forecast was saying low 60s for the start of the race, ramping up to the mid 70s by the time I expected to finish. We drove up to Burlington from the Boston area on Friday with the kids, and I likely did too much walking on Saturday but overall I was feeling ok and was fortunate to get a good amount of sleep Saturday night (7.5hrs).I'm a scientist by training, so planning and preparation is second nature to me. I woke up at 4:45, had a cup of coffee, half a bagel, a banana, and a Maurten 160 drink. Because of the temperature, I decided to prepare two 500mL bottles of Tailwind, one that I would take with me and one that I would pickup from my wife at the Half point. I planned for 4 gels (Maurten@5mi, Gu@10mi, Maurten+Caf@15mi, Maurten@20) and to get a cup of water at every aid station each 2.5mi. I jogged down to the start at 6:15am, used the restroom probably 4 times, and lined up with the 3:30 group.
Race
My plan was to start out with the 3:30 pacer group and see how things go. The course is advertised as being flat and fast, but I'm not sure I believe that because there is a big hill you run up twice with 120ft of vert over about 1/2 mile and between 5-7% grade at times. The course is essentially two figure 8s, and you start in the middle. At 7:15am, we took off. The first few miles felt a bit stiff, but I was chatting it up with the pacers and feeling pretty relaxed. We were going a bit ahead of pace, clocking in at 7:50 per mile for the first 4-5 miles. Around the 10K mark, I was feeling a bit antsy and the pace was slowing down...I decided to head off alone, despite a lot of reservation that I was making a poor decision.Around Mile 9, I was starting to feel a bit of tightness in my legs and my HR was in the high 160s. I was a little bit concerned about this early fatigue, but I knew from my training that I feel like this on almost every single run and it doesn't really seem to get worse, it just seems to be part of my mechanics or something. I kept pushing on, mile after mile, keeping my pace pretty consistently. Every aid station I got a cup of water, drank some and splashed the rest on my head. This made a HUGE difference in the end.
Mile 13, came in at the Half feeling great. Started up one of the hills and saw my wife. *Disaster* she had the wrong bottle. No carbs, no Tailwind for the 2nd half, and my current bottle was empty. At this point, I had also been taking my gels early. My stomach was feeling great so instead of a gel at every 5th mile I was taking one at every 4. The race provided gels at mile 8 and mile 21, so I had picked up an extra gel by this time and made the decision to stop at the next aid station around mile 15 and fill up my bottle with Gatorade. Salvation.
Kept chugging along, feeling a bit of fatigue setting in around the slog from mile 16-19. At mile 19, I saw my wife again and she had the correct bottle (it was my fault, she thought I meant for her to give me a larger, recovery bottle I had prepared of Skratch for after the race). I got my bottle of Tailwind and hit the monster hill at Mile 20. This was my slowest mile at 8:15 (GAP of 7:40) and it really sapped my strength. I was thinking that this must be like running Heartbreak Hill the entire time I was going up.
Through the hill, into the last 10K. Starting to feel desperate, just pushing forward every step of the way. The pacing in this marathon is quite strange, because it also has a Relay of either 2-person or 4-person teams, so you're always seeing different people with way fresher legs than you. Ended up finding a woman to run with who was crushing it, and we paced eachother the last 3-4 miles. Took a last gel around 24 miles and grinded it out to the end.
Berlin next... then Boston?
Post-race, I was feeling pretty happy with my 3:26 time. To be honest, I felt a little anti-climactic, although I'm not entirely sure why. I didn't feel a ton of adrenaline or emotion throughout the race and things seemed pretty collected. That said, I'm pretty surprised at how much I loved almost every minute of the race itself. Maybe it was just because it was my first time, but it was truly a fun and rewarding experience.I think there were a few areas where I could have pushed just slightly harder, but given it was my first marathon on a somewhat challenging course in the heat I'm overall happy with my time. I absolutely nailed my hydration/fueling and my pacing, with a slightly negative split overall, so I'm really pleased with that. As a whole, I'd give my training cycle maybe a 6/10; I think I definitely raced too many of my training runs, likely leading to some of my injuries. I was also only able to go above 50mpw in 2 of the 12 weeks of the program.
Given my somewhat poor training cycle, I'm hoping that I still have a lot of room to improve. I was a bit worried that my MS would cause issues during the marathon, particularly my left leg, which tends to lose coordination in long, higher intensity efforts. Fortunately, it felt pretty good throughout.
Earlier in the year, I was lucky to get a spot for both Berlin and NYC. Given their proximity to each other, I'm going to try and defer NYC to next year. I've now been thinking through if I want to try and apply to Boston for 2025. Given my MS, I am technically eligible for an "adaptive" application, which has a cutoff time of 6:00. I feel in two minds about this, because on one hand I feel like I'm maybe taking a bit of the easy way out, when it might be possible for me to hit sub-3:05 some day. On the other hand, I don't know how many years I have left running so I'm thinking I might just seize the opportunity now and then try and qualify through the more "standard" way in the future. Inspired by the many posts here with very active feeders. Looking for recommendations on feeders that work well and are recommended. I have tried a few over the years with mixed results and most seem to be cheaply made. My last failure was one that had suction cups for the window but a fat woodpecker did that one in. For geography reference, I live in Tucson, AZ and we get quite a few hummingbirds in the area. Big yard with lots of other birds. They can go through a 10lb bag of bird seed in a day or two if I let them.
I understand the importance of cleaning and have no problem cleaning daily if needed. Thx!
