Seasonal Allergies Immunotherapy
Hi I’m planning on applying for OCS when I graduate in May. But im currently taking allergy shots for my seasonal allergies. I would have no problem pausing them during basic etc. Resuming when I’m past training, but is this something I have to do? Is it worth having to get a medical waiver for it? Do I need to tell my recruiter?

Currently in the process of reenlisting as a prior service who was chaptered out in AIT for SI. Submitted and turned over all my paperwork to my recruiter and awaiting MEPS. My recruiter said this is the longest part of the waiting game from his experience. How long should I be expecting to wait realistically? Weight loss
I'm currently 5% body fat over for the arms 2.0. I'm eating way better and consuming 12-1,500 calories and losing an average of 3,000 calories a day. I've been running/walking 2 miles a day of hill terrain. My recruiter said I need to lose 10 pounds by May 17. I need tips and tricks on how to lose those pounds by then

Army National Guard recruiter says at MEPS you can choose from several dates to start basic. Is that accurate?
If so, typically how many dates are there to choose from and how far in the future? I have a great civilian job, so would like to know my date as far in advance as possible.
Edit: would go on to traditional state OCS (yea, I know the internet’s opinions on it but it fits my life really well) afterwards.

I've got 4 years active and 3 years guard under my belt and I've always put in to my tsp to get the match. I know you need 8 years to keep the matching, but my unit has drained what little motivation I had left for the army, and I've decided I'm done. I'm curious if anyone can help me figure out if there's any option that will help me keep my tsp matching besides a 1 year extension. I doubt the IRR counts towards 8 years, and from what I understand, the inactive guard is simply a pause button. So instead of pushing me to 8 years, it's just delaying my 7th till next year or something. I'm also wondering if a future federal job would contribute to that 8 years or if it has to be all concurrent. Thank you for any help or any resources or links yall can send me to figure this out.

I was wondering if I could join the army with depression, anxiety, and OCD. All diagnosed. I have no suicide attempts or anything like that, no inpatient care either. All of these are somewhat mild and manageable, and I haven't been on any medication. But that was another concern of mine, if I was to get on any medication, would that disqualify me? Thanks a lot.

Im currently a senior in high school trying to enlist in the army since December but I’m at a loss of what to do. I took the asvab scored a 61 but autism came up on my records from when I was a kid. I had to get a full medical Record for meps then they wanted my pharmacy record and now they want some more records my recruiter made me sign a form for my old doctors to get it from them about a month and a week ago. I called him the earlier this week and he said he Kentucky or Kansas (I didn’t hear him well and forgot) doing some training I honestly just don’t know what to do I’ll graduate from high school in a few weeks and I probably have a month after that before my parents kick me out any advice?

Hey all, I wanted to get some insight on whether you all think I would be able to enlist with Crohn's. I've seen online that it's generally marked as an "unwaivable medical condition" but sometimes goes on a case by case basis. My IBD is very mild, I honestly forget that I even have the damn disease because it doesnt effect my daily life at all. I have it managed by taking an 8-week biologic but have gone on extended breaks from it before due to insurance reasons (roughly 2-3 months without any meds) and had no flare ups or any issues of the sort. However, my doctor is thinking of switching me to a daily pill (Rinvoq). I don't have any food sensitivities like a lot of Crohn's patients have (caffeine, alcohol, dairy, etc.) and have never had any surgeries nor does my GI doctor think i'll ever need one. I wanted to enlist for a 17C contract as im already in college for tech anyhow, I'm not sure if that would effect my standing. However, dream MOS is 18X but I figure that may be tougher to get by a recruiter. Any advice or thoughts? Army has been my dream forever and I don't want to have to give it up, so I'd really do anything haha.

I have read a few horror stories where someone enlisted with X,Y, or Z in their contract, but after basic they where told something else and could not confirm the original. For example, someone claims they had a specific location through Option 19, only to later be told they are going somewhere else.
My first question is: has this happened to anyone here, and if so and how was it resolved?
My second question is: after signing your contract, how do you gain acess to it later? Do you receive a physical copy for yourself? Can you download a copy? Is there someone you can ask in the Army to retrieve it for you? Will it be acessable on a portal of somekind?
I am considering enlisting with option 19 and the location is very important to me. Thank you!

my recruiter says that I can't get option 4 in my 35W contract but I really want to be airborne as a 35p/m so I have a higher chance of having my skills be put to use. Is a bonus worth choosing the Army over the AF?
In general, I’ve heard that the army’s QoL is less than that of the Air Force. However, the army has way more jobs w bonuses that I’d be interested in. And it’s the same or similar jobs as the Air Force, but w a bonus. I know the Basic Training for army is also longer, but a bonus can be convincing. I have the same question, but in regards to joining the navy as well. I want to focus on my education during my enlistment & get my bachelors & id also like travel opportunities. I haven’t taken my ASVAB yet, it’s scheduled the 16th. I scored rlly well on the PiCAT, and according to those scores I qualify for some army jobs w a bonus. I know it’s not as simple as that, and it’s a whole process & based on what’s available. Just want some opinions on if I was offered an army job w a bonus as opposed to the same/ similar Air Force job without, would you consider it worth it based on your experience?
I already got some answers from a post I made about this, but moderator deleted it and said to comment here. But any additional info/ insight is greatly appreciated. I want to make the best choice for my future in the case that I don't want to do 20 years.

I'm joining up rn and working with a recruiter. We've got my waivers and everything. Pretty much just have to pick a job. For background I was an IET separation back in 2009. From what I've read and what me and my recruiter have gone over I am glossary non-prior service. I could have sworn I read (albeit a while ago) that business rules did not apply to GNPS, so I should be free to pick my MOS. However, I talked to my recruiter earlier today and he wants me to sit with his 1SG and go over the job options available for prior service. Am I wrong and I just get what I get?

I was looking to join the guard but in my medical records it shows I had Guillan barre. I was feeling some numbness in my legs, but looking back at it, it was very cold outside and I was just a bitch who would try to get out of school by any means possible. They did a spinal tap and never found any trace of the disease however. I was in the hospital for a couple of days, the gave me immunoglobulin and then I went home and nothing ever came of it. I am currently completely asymptomatic This was when I was 12 or 13 years old. Now I’m 18 and want to join but my recruiter said I have to get all the records and stuff. What is the chance that I will still be able to join? I tried looking it up online but I couldn’t find an answer. Also if I’m able to join, will I need a medical waiver?

My MOS is 68W, I'm shipping out in June and I'm taking the OPAT in a couple of weeks. I'm 5'2 and 115ish pounds. I'm pretty fit. My biggest worry is the standing long jump. I want to pass the OPAT with flying colors and keep my MOS. Is there any advice or tips y'all can give me?

I’m looking to graduate and enlist in a month but can’t decide on what MOS I want. I think 11B because I don’t want to individuate and do army shit or 68W but I’m not sure if I can get advanced combative training or other schools I want. I want to do something that’s “high speed” and meaningful while working my way towards Ranger reg. Is the 82nd Airborne a good pathway to that? How is civil affairs? Can you enlist directly into it while being active duty?

Hi everyone! I’m a high school student planning on joining the military. I’m Muslim, so I want to be sure that whichever branch I join is accommodating to Muslim needs. If it changes anything, I’m planning joining through the ROTC route.
My main concerns are, does the Army give beard waivers for Muslims? Is it possible to take short breaks throughout the day to pray? Can you fast during Ramadan? Can you be provided with halal (no pork/no alcohol) food?
Also, I’m interested in infantry or armor (or any kind of ground forces officer in general). Would these accommodations interfere with being selected for these careers or being mission ready? (Such as a beard, fasting, etc.)

What are the odds of getting a waiver for ulcerative colitis? I was EPTS’d out in march 2023 after being diagnosed while I was at 30th AG. My GI said I was in remission as of jan of this year. I take 4 Lialda pills a day and get an entyvio infusion every 2 months. I feel perfectly fine now though. Scored a 74 on the asvab.

In the navy currently and getting out in a year. I had a back injury prior to enlisting that I didn’t disclose. I plan on entering the army after my contract. If this comes up will my discharge from the navy be lowered or my benefits revoked?

So my recruiter told me that I have to get a lease first, but the thing is, is that we don't have one with our landlord. It's more like an oral lease and he's a slumlord who never tries to communicate with any of us. That being said, my recruiter then said that I should find a lease online and edit it to where I state that I'm paying the rent to my sister instead (who has a valid ID) He also stated that my sister and I have to go to a check-cashing place to get it notarized. Is this all ok to do and will the BHA be approved? Also if it's approved, does this mean that the rent we pay which is $1,365.50, is going to be paid for while I'm away and how exactly??

I just got told that I cant enlist for 2 years after my waiver got denied for a history of depression. I stopped feeling depressed last August but got officially cleared into remission in February. I was told theres no point in a consult and the most I can do is reach out to a congressman. Other than reaching out to a congressman, is there really nothing I can do?

Questions about Virginia National Guard
I want to do OCS! Now here’s my confusion. My recruiter is saying that the moment I swear in is the moment my contract is going to start and will count towards that 6 year! So, if he is right, I will basically complete 2 years training if I do state OCS. But I would like to have more control on what branch I get! My top 3 are: cyber warfare, signal, and intel. Should I do accelerated in that case? Also how likely am I to get one of those aforementioned three if I do state OCS of 18 months? My bachelor was in Computer Engineering, and I am currently enrolled in ASU for master’s pursuing Computer Science! Will I get that 24k a year tuition fee because he said there’s a possibility I might get it since it’s fully online? Can I get tuition assistance and loan repayment both? Does getting either one incur additional service time?

So my husband is going to meps next week. he has 2 different sets of scars on his left arm. He works at a mobile home plant building houses. One was from when he got caught on a nail so it's a little deeper looking and another was from some sheet metal at work. He didn't disclose it to his boss because he works on a line and it would've put his team behind so he just put some bandaids on it and went about his day and cleaned it up when he got home. This was about 1-2 years ago. What is his meps experience going to be like? They aren't self harm obviously but we've heard horror stories about the doctors at meps not believing people and DQ them. He honestly forgot about telling his recruiter and his recruiter has already sent in all his medical history and got him scheduled for meps. Should he still go ahead and tell his recruiter or just wait and disclose it at meps?

I'm currently in process Enlisting in the Reserve, while holding an associate's degree in mechanical engineering technology, with some side education in programming. While I am working towards my bachelor's degree, I'm looking to pick an MOS that will help my career, or at the very least, be interesting. I don't remember my scores, but my Recruiter told me whatever I pick, my score won't be the limiting factor.
Top of the list for career jobs is 15 series, from what I've heard from currently enlisted in my friend group, wrenching on aircraft in general is a fast track to a cushy job on the outside with my education. 25 series looks boring but useful as anything IT/electrical complements my degree. On the more interesting side, I was looking at 91 series, either 91F or 91P.
Am I going anywhere wrong with any of these jobs? Anything I should be keeping in mind?

Hi all,
I am a permanent resident here is the US, and last week I finished my ASVAB mock test with a 95 on my AFQT. The recruiter says I am eligible for everything that doesn't require a security clearance which is kind of a problem as my dream MOS are the 35-series and 17-series (As both of these are locked behind clearance requirement)
After some thinking, I narrow down to the following, but there are still too many so I hope I can get your feedback on what I am doing. My aims are: a/I want something that will translate into the civilian world well if my time in the army doesn't go well, b/I want an MOS that can advanced through warrant or becoming a commission officer if my time in the army does go well, and c/I want to push myself to the limit and break out of my comfort zone to see where I can go. If I sound arrogant, please forgive for that: I am just trying to be as careful as possible. I am nearly reaching my thirty, and I want to take deliberate steps because I no longer have the luxury of youth and family to try and fail.
The MOS are:
11-series, 12B and 12D: I have a soft spot for these despite knowing they don't translate into the civilian world. But in my heart somewhere is a wild child that wants to test my physical prowess and wants to blow things up. I do know my knees and lower back will hate me for picking this.
15 series: With exceptions to 15C, 15J, and other works related to flying or being mechanics of sensitive equipment, I can be an aircraft technicians. I read that there are demands for airplane mechanics but I don't know much about this field other than a/I got to repair planes, b/people seem to hate it because you have to sign a long contract if you become a warrant.
68A: I did see this MOS getting recommended a lot but after reading its description, I am not very sure if I want to do it either both in the army or afterwards. I must also admit I don't have a good insights onto the day to day life of this job. Can someone shed some light about this MOS for me?
68C: Becoming a nurse seems like a very safe choice out of the military given that the BLS projects nurse to be in high demand and being able to take care of your family sounds like a big plus to me; however, I don't know if I like being a nurse. My parents were doctors, and having seen the hospital environment I can say I am not a fan. I also look into 68A but BLS prospect for it didn't seem good, and the training on 68E, 68D, and 68V look a little bit too short. Do you really become a dental assistant just with 10 weeks of training?
68W: I must admit, I have a soft spot for 68W as it allows me to be both learn some medical skills and be on the field. However, I do notice that 68W only translates to paramedic/EMT post-army, while 68C translates to becoming a nurse (which is more valued and regarded as "better" than paramedic or EMT and thus in higher demand)
88H, 92A, 92F, and 92Y: I pick these because, according to BLS, there is a projected increase need for people in warehousing and transportation. From my limited understanding of the fields, you will be in charge of handling logistics such as maintaining unit inventory, ordering supplies and weapons for your units, etc. but I am not very sure on the difference between, say, 92Y and 92A.
So, can you give me a suggestions? May anyone who has been in these MOS share their experience to help me pick? What are some of the MOS I miss?

How can i improve my chances of success after the military?
I'm going to meps in 2 weeks and im shooting for a 25 series mos. 25H was what was available at the recruiters after i took my practice asvab. I'm not the brightest bulb but, hey, I'll take it. Aside from college ,which i want to continue to pursue throughout my time in the army (or after depending on my mental fortitude once i'm actually in,) how can i set myself up for success in the civilian world? Any input from past 25h or 25 series who somehow translated their career into decent paying jobs will be much appreciated.
I'll add I'm only joining the army for the college benefits and free training as i come from a poor household and have no other feasible way to pay for it.

Hello everyone,
I was recently laid off from a $64k job, and honestly, I'm not too upset. I was already feeling burnt out and unhappy, staying primarily for the promised educational benefits to facilitate a career change, which obviously fell through with the job loss. Now, I'm considering my options and the military as a new path has been sounding appealing to an extent. The VA loan and GI Bill are particularly enticing because they would help me pursue a degree without getting into debt, and enabling the career change I've been considering. And the thought of being able to buy a house at this age/economy seems awesome.
At 28, I'm weighing the implications of joining now, especially considering the pay cut and spending four years AD without the guarantee of going overseas which for me would make it much more worthwhile. Also, I'd likely be one of the older members among younger peers, which is another factor to consider. My entry rank would be E3 due to my associate degree told by the Air force recruiter I met, but I'll need a moral waiver for a misdemeanor I had at 18, which might limit my job options not to mention she told me I would have to be at the disposal of whatever the Air Force wanted me to do? Which I am assuming means that I could enlist for one thing that they tell me nope get your doing this.The Air Force recruiter told me that I would be just fine and I would be able to get in as long as my ASVAB score is high enough.
I'm torn about whether to commit to AD and save myself or a longer term in the military via reserves but still stuck in the same loop of feeling in fulfilled, unable to afford university and in a place I would rather leave. Insights from anyone who joined the military later or faced similar decisions would be incredibly helpful.

So i have hemorrhoids right now and I go to MEPS monday. I have a Drs visit from about 2 years ago where she prescribed me the cream to use. The cream says to only use it when you have hemorrhoids. I still have the cream. Will I pass MEPS if I bring that the Dr visit. or should I get a new one the day before? It's Saturday so my recruiter won't answer.

So I enlisted on Friday. (25H) and I ship to BT in August. I’ve made my mind up before enlisting that I was going to make a career out of it. So when I was in the first time I was a 25U. I was 16 when I swore in to secure my mos and left at 18YO. I’ve decicided to go back in. Im picking between 19 jobs, I qualify for all of them as I keep my old asvab scores. I scored over a 105 in everything so I have a pretty big list to pick from. These jobs have good jobs outside of the army and that’s my angle, I know 25U translates to a good job outside of the army but it’s not my cup of tea. So any info on the jobs in the army and civilian life for these mos would be greatly appreciate. Background: Greencard holder, 6yr+ experience in IT field. No degree. Married.
Always wanted to join the military and finally have the opportunity to do so.
What I want to experience from the military;
I want the opportunity to grow in the IT field and have military experience and later on attain a contractor job in overseas installations. Very interested in being able to move overseas for a few years specially Japan.
My biggest interest is to grow in my career + experience other countries.
Recruits have also told me that for active duty they are allowing first duty station to be chosen because the army apparently has a shortage of people joining so they want to motivate people to join by allowing them to choose duty stations. This has made me consider going active IF they aren't lying about this + the job security has always been a plus to me.
My primary plan was :
Going reserve, getting my citizenship while in basic training, changing my mos to 25B then finding government contracting job overseas preferably (Japan) and changing my unit to Japan to drill there (Camp Zama). Overall my biggest goal is to move overseas and be in the IT field.
What is the best route? Advice is greatly appreciated in advance:)

I want to enlist as a 19D Wont be for a year or so still but trying to do my research and evrything and make sure this is what i want, So far it looks like it is but i have a couple of questions that i need answering before i decided to enlist. 1. as a 19D with 19C coming will 19D still be manning Bradleys 2. I'm going to MEPS this week and I was told that the Job I'm really interested in (12w) is rare and to not get my hopes up. I'll be doing research about some other jobs, but if I really want that job should I just wait for a slot to open up or go with alternate choices?

Vision Waiver Acceptance Probability
So I’m wanting to enlist as an 11x OP 4in the army, went to MEPS a few weeks ago, and am currently waiting on a current injury to be waived. I’m just kind of worrying about my vision waiver. Recruiter said we have to wait for this to be cleared first, then we can launch the vision waiver.
What’s the probability that a vision waiver will be accepted with Visual Acuity of 20/30 20/50 corrected vision. I understand everything is case to case, I’m just kind of worrying that it’ll end up being denied.

In the process of renegotiating my contract before shipping out and I'm seriously considering 19K (M1 Armor Crewman). Recruiter told me that anyone can volunteer to go to airborne school at BCT and I really want to go airborne but it seems like 19Ks don't really do it as much as other MOS's. Is it true that i will have the opportunity to volunteer myself for airborne school at basic? If not, how can I attend Airborne or any other specialized school as a tanker?

Just reserved mos 88L Water craft engineer.
Was excited at first as I’ve e heard a lot of good things about this mos, but i have a wife, 6yr old and another on the way and am worried that i wont be home that often given this mos. Im supposed to go to meps in 4 days and swear in. Im really not trying to be away from my family all that often. Is this mos bad for family life? Have i made a mistake? Or should i keep it and roll with it. Any recommendations on what i should do?

Hello, I'm currently a high school senior who is interested in joining the ROTC. I've reached out to ROTC recruiters in the colleges that I will be attending however, they never picked up their phones nor responded to their emails after multiple attempts. I've also scheduled appointments with them only for them to not show up multiple times. I've also called the army and they said they would have someone call me but they never did either. Seasonal Allergies Immunotherapy
Hi I’m planning on applying for OCS when I graduate in May. But im currently taking allergy shots for my seasonal allergies. I would have no problem pausing them during basic etc. Resuming when I’m past training, but is this something I have to do? Is it worth having to get a medical waiver for it? Do I need to tell my recruiter?

Currently in the process of reenlisting as a prior service who was chaptered out in AIT for SI. Submitted and turned over all my paperwork to my recruiter and awaiting MEPS. My recruiter said this is the longest part of the waiting game from his experience. How long should I be expecting to wait realistically? I'm currently 5% body fat over for the arms 2.0. I'm eating way better and consuming 12-1,500 calories and losing an average of 3,000 calories a day. I've been running/walking 2 miles a day of hill terrain. My recruiter said I need to lose 10 pounds by May 17. I need tips and tricks on how to lose those pounds by then

Army National Guard recruiter says at MEPS you can choose from several dates to start basic. Is that accurate?
If so, typically how many dates are there to choose from and how far in the future? I have a great civilian job, so would like to know my date as far in advance as possible.

I've got 4 years active and 3 years guard under my belt and I've always put in to my tsp to get the match. I know you need 8 years to keep the matching, but my unit has drained what little motivation I had left for the army, and I've decided I'm done. I'm curious if anyone can help me figure out if there's any option that will help me keep my tsp matching besides a 1 year extension. I doubt the IRR counts towards 8 years, and from what I understand, the inactive guard is simply a pause button. So instead of pushing me to 8 years, it's just delaying my 7th till next year or something. I'm also wondering if a future federal job would contribute to that 8 years or if it has to be all concurrent. Thank you for any help or any resources or links yall can send me to figure this out.

I was wondering if I could join the army with depression, anxiety, and OCD. All diagnosed. I have no suicide attempts or anything like that, no inpatient care either. All of these are somewhat mild and manageable, and I haven't been on any medication. But that was another concern of mine, if I was to get on any medication, would that disqualify me? Thanks a lot.

Im currently a senior in high school trying to enlist in the army since December but I’m at a loss of what to do. I took the asvab scored a 61 but autism came up on my records from when I was a kid. I had to get a full medical Record for meps then they wanted my pharmacy record and now they want some more records my recruiter made me sign a form for my old doctors to get it from them about a month and a week ago. I called him the earlier this week and he said he Kentucky or Kansas (I didn’t hear him well and forgot) doing some training I honestly just don’t know what to do I’ll graduate from high school in a few weeks and I probably have a month after that before my parents kick me out any advice?

Hey all, I wanted to get some insight on whether you all think I would be able to enlist with Crohn's. I've seen online that it's generally marked as an "unwaivable medical condition" but sometimes goes on a case by case basis. My IBD is very mild, I honestly forget that I even have the damn disease because it doesnt effect my daily life at all. I have it managed by taking an 8-week biologic but have gone on extended breaks from it before due to insurance reasons (roughly 2-3 months without any meds) and had no flare ups or any issues of the sort. However, my doctor is thinking of switching me to a daily pill (Rinvoq). I don't have any food sensitivities like a lot of Crohn's patients have (caffeine, alcohol, dairy, etc.) and have never had any surgeries nor does my GI doctor think i'll ever need one. I wanted to enlist for a 17C contract as im already in college for tech anyhow, I'm not sure if that would effect my standing. However, dream MOS is 18X but I figure that may be tougher to get by a recruiter. Any advice or thoughts? Army has been my dream forever and I don't want to have to give it up, so I'd really do anything haha.

I have read a few horror stories where someone enlisted with X,Y, or Z in their contract, but after basic they where told something else and could not confirm the original. For example, someone claims they had a specific location through Option 19, only to later be told they are going somewhere else.
My first question is: has this happened to anyone here, and if so and how was it resolved?
My second question is: after signing your contract, how do you gain acess to it later? Do you receive a physical copy for yourself? Can you download a copy? Is there someone you can ask in the Army to retrieve it for you? Will it be acessable on a portal of somekind?
I am considering enlisting with option 19 and the location is very important to me. Thank you!

Is a bonus worth choosing the Army over the AF?
In general, I’ve heard that the army’s QoL is less than that of the Air Force. However, the army has way more jobs w bonuses that I’d be interested in. And it’s the same or similar jobs as the Air Force, but w a bonus. I know the Basic Training for army is also longer, but a bonus can be convincing. I have the same question, but in regards to joining the navy as well. I want to focus on my education during my enlistment & get my bachelors & id also like travel opportunities. I haven’t taken my ASVAB yet, it’s scheduled the 16th. I scored rlly well on the PiCAT, and according to those scores I qualify for some army jobs w a bonus. I know it’s not as simple as that, and it’s a whole process & based on what’s available. Just want some opinions on if I was offered an army job w a bonus as opposed to the same/ similar Air Force job without, would you consider it worth it based on your experience?
I already got some answers from a post I made about this, but moderator deleted it and said to comment here. But any additional info/ insight is greatly appreciated. I want to make the best choice for my future in the case that I don't want to do 20 years.

I'm joining up rn and working with a recruiter. We've got my waivers and everything. Pretty much just have to pick a job. For background I was an IET separation back in 2009. From what I've read and what me and my recruiter have gone over I am glossary non-prior service. I could have sworn I read (albeit a while ago) that business rules did not apply to GNPS, so I should be free to pick my MOS. However, I talked to my recruiter earlier today and he wants me to sit with his 1SG and go over the job options available for prior service. Am I wrong and I just get what I get?

I was looking to join the guard but in my medical records it shows I had Guillan barre. I was feeling some numbness in my legs, but looking back at it, it was very cold outside and I was just a bitch who would try to get out of school by any means possible. They did a spinal tap and never found any trace of the disease however. I was in the hospital for a couple of days, the gave me immunoglobulin and then I went home and nothing ever came of it. I am currently completely asymptomatic This was when I was 12 or 13 years old. Now I’m 18 and want to join but my recruiter said I have to get all the records and stuff. What is the chance that I will still be able to join? I tried looking it up online but I couldn’t find an answer. Also if I’m able to join, will I need a medical waiver?

I’m looking to graduate and enlist in a month but can’t decide on what MOS I want. I think 11B because I don’t want to individuate and do army shit or 68W but I’m not sure if I can get advanced combative training or other schools I want. Hi everyone! I’m a high school student planning on joining the military. I’m Muslim, so I want to be sure that whichever branch I join is accommodating to Muslim needs. If it changes anything, I’m planning joining through the ROTC route.
My main concerns are, does the Army give beard waivers for Muslims? Is it possible to take short breaks throughout the day to pray? Can you fast during Ramadan? Can you be provided with halal (no pork/no alcohol) food?
Also, I’m interested in infantry or armor (or any kind of ground forces officer in general). Would these accommodations interfere with being selected for these careers or being mission ready? (Such as a beard, fasting, etc.)

What are the odds of getting a waiver for ulcerative colitis? I was EPTS’d out in march 2023 after being diagnosed while I was at 30th AG. My GI said I was in remission as of jan of this year. I take 4 Lialda pills a day and get an entyvio infusion every 2 months. I feel perfectly fine now though. Scored a 74 on the asvab.

So my recruiter told me that I have to get a lease first, but the thing is, is that we don't have one with our landlord. It's more like an oral lease and he's a slumlord who never tries to communicate with any of us. That being said, my recruiter then said that I should find a lease online and edit it to where I state that I'm paying the rent to my sister instead (who has a valid ID) He also stated that my sister and I have to go to a check-cashing place to get it notarized. I just got told that I cant enlist for 2 years after my waiver got denied for a history of depression. I stopped feeling depressed last August but got officially cleared into remission in February. I was told theres no point in a consult and the most I can do is reach out to a congressman. Other than reaching out to a congressman, is there really nothing I can do?

Questions about Virginia National Guard
I want to do OCS! Now here’s my confusion. My recruiter is saying that the moment I swear in is the moment my contract is going to start and will count towards that 6 year! So, if he is right, I will basically complete 2 years training if I do state OCS. But I would like to have more control on what branch I get! My top 3 are: cyber warfare, signal, and intel. Should I do accelerated in that case? Also how likely am I to get one of those aforementioned three if I do state OCS of 18 months? My bachelor was in Computer Engineering, and I am currently enrolled in ASU for master’s pursuing Computer Science! Will I get that 24k a year tuition fee because he said there’s a possibility I might get it since it’s fully online? Can I get tuition assistance and loan repayment both? Does getting either one incur additional service time?

So my husband is going to meps next week. he has 2 different sets of scars on his left arm. He works at a mobile home plant building houses. One was from when he got caught on a nail so it's a little deeper looking and another was from some sheet metal at work. He didn't disclose it to his boss because he works on a line and it would've put his team behind so he just put some bandaids on it and went about his day and cleaned it up when he got home. This was about 1-2 years ago. What is his meps experience going to be like? They aren't self harm obviously but we've heard horror stories about the doctors at meps not believing people and DQ them. He honestly forgot about telling his recruiter and his recruiter has already sent in all his medical history and got him scheduled for meps. Should he still go ahead and tell his recruiter or just wait and disclose it at meps?

I'm currently in process Enlisting in the Reserve, while holding an associate's degree in mechanical engineering technology, with some side education in programming. While I am working towards my bachelor's degree, I'm looking to pick an MOS that will help my career, or at the very least, be interesting. I don't remember my scores, but my Recruiter told me whatever I pick, my score won't be the limiting factor.
Top of the list for career jobs is 15 series, from what I've heard from currently enlisted in my friend group, wrenching on aircraft in general is a fast track to a cushy job on the outside with my education. 25 series looks boring but useful as anything IT/electrical complements my degree. On the more interesting side, I was looking at 91 series, either 91F or 91P.
Am I going anywhere wrong with any of these jobs? Anything I should be keeping in mind?

I am a permanent resident here is the US, and last week I finished my ASVAB mock test with a 95 on my AFQT. The recruiter says I am eligible for everything that doesn't require a security clearance which is kind of a problem as my dream MOS are the 35-series and 17-series (As both of these are locked behind clearance requirement)
After some thinking, I narrow down to the following, but there are still too many so I hope I can get your feedback on what I am doing. My aims are: a/I want something that will translate into the civilian world well if my time in the army doesn't go well, b/I want an MOS that can advanced through warrant or becoming a commission officer if my time in the army does go well, and c/I want to push myself to the limit and break out of my comfort zone to see where I can go. If I sound arrogant, please forgive for that: I am just trying to be as careful as possible. I am nearly reaching my thirty, and I want to take deliberate steps because I no longer have the luxury of youth and family to try and fail.
The MOS are:
11-series, 12B and 12D: I have a soft spot for these despite knowing they don't translate into the civilian world. But in my heart somewhere is a wild child that wants to test my physical prowess and wants to blow things up. I do know my knees and lower back will hate me for picking this.
15 series: With exceptions to 15C, 15J, and other works related to flying or being mechanics of sensitive equipment, I can be an aircraft technicians. I read that there are demands for airplane mechanics but I don't know much about this field other than a/I got to repair planes, b/people seem to hate it because you have to sign a long contract if you become a warrant.
68A: I did see this MOS getting recommended a lot but after reading its description, I am not very sure if I want to do it either both in the army or afterwards. I must also admit I don't have a good insights onto the day to day life of this job. Can someone shed some light about this MOS for me?
68C: Becoming a nurse seems like a very safe choice out of the military given that the BLS projects nurse to be in high demand and being able to take care of your family sounds like a big plus to me; however, I don't know if I like being a nurse. My parents were doctors, and having seen the hospital environment I can say I am not a fan. I also look into 68A but BLS prospect for it didn't seem good, and the training on 68E, 68D, and 68V look a little bit too short. Do you really become a dental assistant just with 10 weeks of training?
68W: I must admit, I have a soft spot for 68W as it allows me to be both learn some medical skills and be on the field. However, I do notice that 68W only translates to paramedic/EMT post-army, while 68C translates to becoming a nurse (which is more valued and regarded as "better" than paramedic or EMT and thus in higher demand)
88H, 92A, 92F, and 92Y: I pick these because, according to BLS, there is a projected increase need for people in warehousing and transportation. From my limited understanding of the fields, you will be in charge of handling logistics such as maintaining unit inventory, ordering supplies and weapons for your units, etc. but I am not very sure on the difference between, say, 92Y and 92A.
So, can you give me a suggestions? May anyone who has been in these MOS share their experience to help me pick? What are some of the MOS I miss?

How can i improve my chances of success after the military?
I'm going to meps in 2 weeks and im shooting for a 25 series mos. 25H was what was available at the recruiters after i took my practice asvab. I'm not the brightest bulb but, hey, I'll take it. Aside from college ,which i want to continue to pursue throughout my time in the army (or after depending on my mental fortitude once i'm actually in,) how can i set myself up for success in the civilian world? Any input from past 25h or 25 series who somehow translated their career into decent paying jobs will be much appreciated.
I'll add I'm only joining the army for the college benefits and free training as i come from a poor household and have no other feasible way to pay for it.

Hello everyone,
I was recently laid off from a $64k job, and honestly, I'm not too upset. I was already feeling burnt out and unhappy, staying primarily for the promised educational benefits to facilitate a career change, which obviously fell through with the job loss. Now, I'm considering my options and the military as a new path has been sounding appealing to an extent. The VA loan and GI Bill are particularly enticing because they would help me pursue a degree without getting into debt, and enabling the career change I've been considering. And the thought of being able to buy a house at this age/economy seems awesome.
At 28, I'm weighing the implications of joining now, especially considering the pay cut and spending four years AD without the guarantee of going overseas which for me would make it much more worthwhile. Also, I'd likely be one of the older members among younger peers, which is another factor to consider. My entry rank would be E3 due to my associate degree told by the Air force recruiter I met, but I'll need a moral waiver for a misdemeanor I had at 18, which might limit my job options not to mention she told me I would have to be at the disposal of whatever the Air Force wanted me to do? Which I am assuming means that I could enlist for one thing that they tell me nope get your doing this.The Air Force recruiter told me that I would be just fine and I would be able to get in as long as my ASVAB score is high enough.
I'm torn about whether to commit to AD and save myself or a longer term in the military via reserves but still stuck in the same loop of feeling in fulfilled, unable to afford university and in a place I would rather leave. Insights from anyone who joined the military later or faced similar decisions would be incredibly helpful.

So i have hemorrhoids right now and I go to MEPS monday. I have a Drs visit from about 2 years ago where she prescribed me the cream to use. The cream says to only use it when you have hemorrhoids. So when I was in the first time I was a 25U. I was 16 when I swore in to secure my mos and left at 18YO. I’ve decicided to go back in. Im picking between 19 jobs, I qualify for all of them as I keep my old asvab scores. I scored over a 105 in everything so I have a pretty big list to pick from. These jobs have good jobs outside of the army and that’s my angle, I know 25U translates to a good job outside of the army but it’s not my cup of tea. What I want to experience from the military;
I want the opportunity to grow in the IT field and have military experience and later on attain a contractor job in overseas installations. Very interested in being able to move overseas for a few years specially Japan.
My biggest interest is to grow in my career + experience other countries.
Recruits have also told me that for active duty they are allowing first duty station to be chosen because the army apparently has a shortage of people joining so they want to motivate people to join by allowing them to choose duty stations. This has made me consider going active IF they aren't lying about this + the job security has always been a plus to me.
My primary plan was :
Going reserve, getting my citizenship while in basic training, changing my mos to 25B then finding government contracting job overseas preferably (Japan) and changing my unit to Japan to drill there (Camp Zama). Overall my biggest goal is to move overseas and be in the IT field.
What is the best route? Advice is greatly appreciated in advance:)

I want to enlist as a 19D Wont be for a year or so still but trying to do my research and evrything and make sure this is what i want, So far it looks like it is but i have a couple of questions that i need answering before i decided to enlist. 1. as a 19D with 19C coming will 19D still be manning Bradleys 2. What are my chances of being assigned to a cav unit i really dont wanna be assigned to an infantry or god knows what else 3. Am i able to enlist as active at 17?

I'm going to MEPS this week and I was told that the Job I'm really interested in (12w) is rare and to not get my hopes up. I'll be doing research about some other jobs, but if I really want that job should I just wait for a slot to open up or go with alternate choices?
Does anyone have any experience with this job and how often slots show up?

Vision Waiver Acceptance Probability
So I’m wanting to enlist as an 11x OP 4in the army, went to MEPS a few weeks ago, and am currently waiting on a current injury to be waived. I’m just kind of worrying about my vision waiver. Recruiter said we have to wait for this to be cleared first, then we can launch the vision waiver.
What’s the probability that a vision waiver will be accepted with Visual Acuity of 20/30 20/50 corrected vision. I understand everything is case to case, I’m just kind of worrying that it’ll end up being denied.

In the process of renegotiating my contract before shipping out and I'm seriously considering 19K (M1 Armor Crewman). Recruiter told me that anyone can volunteer to go to airborne school at BCT and I really want to go airborne but it seems like 19Ks don't really do it as much as other MOS's. Is it true that i will have the opportunity to volunteer myself for airborne school at basic? If not, how can I attend Airborne or any other specialized school as a tanker?

Just reserved mos 88L Water craft engineer.
Was excited at first as I’ve e heard a lot of good things about this mos, but i have a wife, 6yr old and another on the way and am worried that i wont be home that often given this mos. Im supposed to go to meps in 4 days and swear in. Im really not trying to be away from my family all that often. Is this mos bad for family life? Have i made a mistake? Or should i keep it and roll with it. Any recommendations on what i should do?

Hello, I’m in ROTC right now but I’m about to go to CST. I have been looking into branches as much as possible and am pretty set on ADA but I wanted to ask if anyone here has been on a HIMAD or SHORAD deployment that can give me some insight on what it’s like, more specifically SHORAD but I do want to hear both sides.

Hello, I'm currently a high school senior who is interested in joining the ROTC. I've reached out to ROTC recruiters in the colleges that I will be attending however, they never picked up their phones nor responded to their emails after multiple attempts. I've also scheduled appointments with them only for them to not show up multiple times. I've also called the army and they said they would have someone call me but they never did either. I was wondering if anyone could help me get in touch with an ROTC recruiter as I got a few questions about the Army ROTC as well as the process to proceed.

Details such as names, dates, and locations have been altered to protect myself and the people of my town, but the story is true.
Everybody in my area knows about Kit Jenson, the Crazed Contortionist. A moniker he posthumously earnt after butchering his wife and taking his own life. The deranged man was a performer. An artist, he would have said. Jenson frequently put on a mesmerising contortionist display at the old theatre in Greentree. A show that was loved, though he was an oddball.
Still, in spite of what folk call him, he did not slaughter Mandy Jenson in a performative way. There was no display of gratuitous grandeur. The two bodies were not packed into some poky space, like a pair of contorted sardines. He beheaded his wife and threw himself from a sixth-floor balcony.
They both died on Tuesday 10^th May, 2022. I know that because I’ve researched it extensively. Read and re-read articles until my eyes throbbed. Just to ensure that I’ve not entirely lost my marbles. There's no denying it. They’ve been gone for two years.
That’s why I don’t understand the calls I received on Friday 24^th May, 2024. Calls that all stemmed from a town I shall call Greentree.
~Call 1 – 12:40pm~
Operator: 999. Police. What is the nature of your emergency?
Caller: Hello. I, erm… I should’ve called earlier, but I just didn’t get it. And now something’s happened. Something awful. Erm, my… My name’s Ian Poole. I work at the care home off Broad Street. Know the one?
Operator: Yes, I do. What’s happened, Ian?
Caller: Well, a few of the folk in the east wing have been acting bizarrely all day. There was an incident, and… Well, they’re starting to frighten me. Frighten all of us.
Operator: I see. What was the incident, Ian? Why did you call the emergency services?
Caller: One of the residents seriously injured someone. It was Mr Harrison, one of our oldest residents. He… Oh, God. He broke Mrs Renley’s legs. I don’t… I don’t…
Operator: Okay. Breathe for me, Ian. It’s going to be okay. I’ll dispatch officers, but I have to ask whether Mr Harrison has pre-existing mental health problems?
Caller: Well, of course he does. You understand the nature of this place, right? It’s a home for dementia patients. Not a retirement village.
Operator: I understand that, Ian. Do you understand why I asked the question? When it comes to crimes committed by dementia sufferers, such incidents rarely result in court action. The patient has no knowledge of what they’re doing.
Caller: Yes, I know. Shit, I’m not trying to throw Mr Harrison in prison. I’m trying to protect everybody. He’s… We sedated him, but now Mrs Renley’s not herself either. I know what you’re thinking. Obviously, she’s not herself, given her injured legs. But it’s the opposite of what you’d expect. She… She should be in pain, but she’s not. She’s just not herself. And this madness is like a disease. It’s spreading throughout the wing. I don’t want to stay in here. None of us want to stay in here.
Operator: Okay. I’ve dispatched some officers, and the ambulance service has been notified. But tell me what happened, Ian. I’m not getting the full picture.
Caller: I know. It’s hard to say what happened though. I saw it, and I still don’t understand. It was a frightening morning. I’m the manager here, but I didn’t arrive until ten. And my co-worker, Susan, was flustered. She’d been crying because Mr Harrison called her a rude name. Well, what’s new there? That’s what I thought, but I didn’t say it out loud, of course. Anyway, Susan said that Mr Harrison was behaving even more strangely than usual. To give you some context, he… He often speaks in broken sentences, he’s practically immobile, and he doesn’t recognise his loved ones. That’s the level of his deterioration. But today, he’s been lucid. Very lucid. He even got up and strolled around. I’ve not seen him walk more than two steps in months.
Operator: Right. How did this lead to an altercation with Mrs…?
Caller: … Renley. Right. Well, she was complaining about Mr Harrison’s incessant chattering. Not a new complaint, mind you. See, he’s always chattering, but it’s usually jumbled nonsense. That’s what I’m trying to explain to you. Today, he’s been speaking in complete sentences, and he’s been saying horrible things. Things that make my skin crawl. I don’t know why. It was nothing particularly threatening, but I feel… He feels dangerous. Well, clearly he’s dangerous.
Operator: What exactly happened between Mr Harrison and Mrs Renley? How did the assault occur?
Caller: Lenny said that Mr Harrison had been ranting for a while. He even wrote down some of the things Mr Harrison was saying, before things became volatile. ‘I am endless.’ That’s one of the things he’s written. What else? Erm… ‘I will endlessly be the greatest artist there has even been. The true one. The stage never dies. I must persist.’
Operator: Right. Mr Harrison said a lot, didn’t he? I hope you don’t take offence, Ian, but none of those sentences sound particularly lucid to me. It sounds exactly like the jumbled rant of a dementia sufferer. Words that mean nothing at all.
Caller: No. I work here every day. Trust me. That wasn’t normal. Look, I get what you’re saying. And you’re right, in a sense. People say and do the strangest things in this place. Things that’ll break your heart or set your hairs on end. But residents often regress to the people they once were, and none of those words match the man that Mr Harrison used to be. He wasn’t a poet or a performer. He didn’t speak eloquently or care for the arts. Back when he used to speak clearly, he didn’t speak like that.
Operator: Ian.
Caller: Fine. I understand. You might be right. After all, we thought the same. I would’ve dismissed it. So would’ve Susan. In fact, we did dismiss it. She dried her eyes, pulled up her bootstraps, and came to the canteen with me. We heard some commotion, and that was when it happened.
Operator: The assault?
Caller: Yeah. Mrs Renley said something Mr Harrison didn’t like. ‘It wasn’t a good show’. According to Lenny, at one point, the man had been doing yoga. Susan and I found that hard to believe, as he’d hardly moved for months. Anyway, Lenny was already heading over to Mr Harrison when Susan and I entered the room, as things were becoming a little too heated.
Operator: What was Mr Harrison saying?
Caller: He called Mrs Renley an ‘uncultured swine without the intellect to digest true art’. Now, this is what I mean. I know you don’t know Mr Harrison, but he was a typical bloke. A man of few words. Even when he could talk in full sentences, a year or so ago, he did not speak like that. He hasn’t been himself today. Almost as if somebody else were… Never mind.
Operator: Right. Okay. What about the assault, Ian?
Caller: Oh. Sorry. I’m just… I’m trying to avoid talking about that. Look, I’ve already said what happened. He broke her legs.
Operator: Yes, but I need to know more than that. That’s a very serious assault. Did Mr Harrison use a weapon? You said your co-worker, Lenny, was in the room. Then you and Susan were in the room. Three members of staff. One perpetrator. A man who you told me was mostly immobile. ‘Practically’ immobile, you said. So, why didn’t any of you manage to stop him?
Caller: Our residents have no access to dangerous things. Don’t try to turn this into an investigation of Greentree Nursing Home. We operate things properly here.
Operator: I’m not accusing you of anything, Ian. I’m trying to understand how on Earth this happened. So, if he had no weapon, how did Mr Harrison break Mrs Renley’s legs?
Caller: I… I don’t… I don’t want to say. When are the responders getting here?
Operator: In a few minutes. And you don’t have to talk to me, but at some point, you’ll have to answer detailed questions about the incident. You have a duty of care to those residents, and given that such a serious assault occurred whilst three members of staff were present–
Caller: – He used his bare fucking hands. Okay? He… Mr Harrison snapped Mrs Renley like a fucking twig. One leg after the other. Snapped each limb upwards, far past breaking point. I'm looking at her right now. The bones are protruding. There’s blood everywhere. Our trained nurse applied tourniquets and bandaged the wounds, so she says that should’ve stopped the blood loss. Mrs Renley should be okay until the responders arrive. Physically, anyway. I thought about asking for an ambulance when I rang 999, but… Look, we wanted the police. We’re scared. We thought we… Oh, I don’t know anymore.
Operator: Don’t worry about that, Ian. I’ve dispatched an ambulance as well. What have you done with Mr Harrison? Does he pose a threat to any residents or members of staff?
Caller: No. We were scared of him at first. Don’t worry. He’s… He’s fine. No threat to any of us. We gave him some Lorazepam to calm him down a little. He’s in his room, and a member of staff is watching him. We’re scared of Mrs Renley now. She’s started sounding like him. Talking about performing on stage. And some of the others have started saying odd things. But Mrs Renley scares me the most. She told me that she ‘could bend her legs a little farther, if I’d just give her a stage’. I don’t… I don’t understand any of this.
Operator: Right… I… Thank you, Ian. Do you want to stay on the phone until the responders arrive? The paramedics should be there before the police. Any second now, in fact.
Caller: Yes, I hear the sirens outside, but I think I should hang up. I don’t want to talk about it anymore. I want to go to sleep.
Operator: Okay, Ian. The paramedics will help. I promise.
Call ended at 12:18pm.
Responders arrived to find that five of the residents in the east wing had passed from heart attacks, including Mr Harrison and Mrs Renley. Several others are still in hospital.
When I received this call at the beginning of my shift, it horrified me. I was struggling to come to terms with the thought of such a vicious assault, though I’d heard of worse things. Once, a killer confessed his crime to me. Yet, somehow, this frightened me more than any other call. Something about the dread in the voice of Ian Poole. It was contagious. A disease, like he said.
And it was only the first crumb of Friday’s awful events. Events which took place on a date that carried no significance, though I’ve spent days searching for answers. Searching for whatever ties everything together. I’ve found only one horrible link.
Kit Jenson.
~Call 2 – 3:24pm~
Operator: Police. What is the nature of your emergency?
Caller: A strange man is following me home.
Operator: Okay. How long has he been following you?
Caller: Since I left school. Oh, God, he’s still there. He’s still there.
Operator: Okay. It’s all going to be okay. I’m going to send a police officer out to you. Just stay calm for me. Which school was this?
Caller: Greentree High School. My name’s Cora Ashburn.
Operator: Thank you, Cora. Okay. Where are you right now? Is there anyone else around? A group of people who seem safe, perhaps?
Caller: I’m on a street with lots of houses. Wait. Why? Should I do something? Should I knock on a door? I don’t… He’s so close. He’s so close. He seems to be getting closer, no matter how quickly I move. Shit. What’s wrong with him?
Operator: Stay calm, Cora. Do you–
Caller: – What’s wrong with his body? There’s something wrong with his body.
Operator: Do you know the name of the street, Cora?
Caller: Yeah, it’s Crescent Drive. Off Main Street.
Operator: Thank you. The police are coming, okay? And I wasn’t suggesting that you start knocking on doors. I need you to keep walking, okay? Do you see anybody on the pavement?
Caller: Oh, God.
Operator: I’m sorry. I don’t want to frighten you. Breathe for me, Cora. It’s all going to be okay. A responder is on the way, all right? We’re only five minutes from your road. Have you seen anybody else on the street?
Caller: I don’t know. I’m walking, like you said. I don’t want to stop. I’m just moving. He’s so fast though. He’s on his [inaudible]. I don’t know. What is he doing? He doesn’t look real. He looks… His spine is bent. His arms. I’m losing my fucking [inaudible]. I don’t know [inaudible]. Shit.
Operator: Just a few minutes, Cora. You should hear the sirens in the distance. Do you hear them? They’re close.
Caller: I see someone. I see someone in the playground. Should I go to them?
Operator: As long as you stay nearby, Cora. The responders need to be able to easily find you. Who have you seen in the playground? It’ll help to make you identifiable when the responders arrive. A girl in a Greentree uniform, and…?
Caller: It’s a woman. Hey. Help. Help me. A man’s following me. He’s… Oh, God. No, no, no, no, no, no. What’s wrong with you? What’s wrong with you?
Call ended at 3:27pm.
When responders arrived at 3:29pm, they did not find Cora Ashburn. Four days later, she is still missing.
After sweeping the playground beside Crescent Drive, officers found a threadbare cardigan knotted onto two interlinking bars of a jungle gym. Something that only warranted attention because its remaining strands had mostly unravelled from a gaping hole in the centre. Worst of all, upon closer inspection, it appeared to be blood-stained.
After the evidence was brought into the station, an investigating officer recognised the item of clothing from an old case. It was the cardigan found on the corpse of Mandy Jenson. A cardigan that was discarded once the case had swiftly, and decisively, been closed. Two years earlier.
~Call 3 – 6:16pm~
Operator: Police. What is the nature of your emergency?
Caller: He’s, erm… He’s got… Oh, he’s wrong, man. He’s all [inaudible] wrong. Like, [inaudible] head’s gone. Head’s coming off, mate. Know what I mean? Y’know?
Operator: Sorry, I didn’t understand any of that. You’re slurring. What’s the emergency?
Caller: Hey, love. Are you okay? Is that [inaudible]? Why are you crying, love? Oh, shit. Did he do that to you? Did he [inaudible]? Fuck me. Fuck.
Operator: Are you okay? Who else is with you? Please tell me what’s happening.
Caller: Don’t… Don’t [inaudible] hang up. I have an emergency. I do. This lass has been… She’s having a rough night, mate. She’s having a… Shit. Fuck.
Operator: Take a deep breath. Just tell me what’s happening. Slowly. Calmly.
Caller: I’ve had a bit to drink.
Operator: I can tell.
Caller: Sorry, I just [inaudible].
Operator: I really need you to speak clearly. What has happened to the woman you mentioned?
Caller: It’s this guy. He was hassling [inaudible]. He was, like, off. Just fucking off. Didn’t really see him. I felt it though. This tall fella. Weird [inaudible] figure. Some creep who vanished when a bunch of us came out of the [inaudible]. Don’t know where he went, but she’s just… She’s [inaudible] rough. He hurt her. There’s so much fucking blood.
Operator: Right. Okay. A man hurt a woman. Where are you?
Caller: In the centre of [inaudible]. Near The Old Arms. In the [inaudible]. The, erm… Where the cars park. The… The car park. Around the back of the pub, y’know?
Operator: I know the pub. Okay. I’ll be sending emergency responders to your location. Stay on the phone, and please do not leave the woman on her own. Are any other people there?
Caller: The others went home. I told the landlord, but he’s gone. Don’t know [inaudible]. Don’t want to leave her. Y’know? There was another woman, but [inaudible] left.
Operator: Do you think I’d be able to talk to the injured woman? Or would you be able to talk to her, at least? Just until the paramedics arrive. Is she breathing? You’ve not described her injuries.
Caller: I, er, [inaudible]. She’s twitching, but she isn’t, like, gonna… She isn’t gonna talk, mate. Her mouth’s all… The man broke her jaw, and she’s just… Do you hear [inaudible]?
Operator: I hear another voice. Is that her?
Caller: Yeah, she’s… I tried to talk to her, but she didn’t [inaudible] words. She just… Oh, shit. Oh, shit, shit, [inaudible]. Where does the [inaudible]? Fucking [inaudible].
Operator: Hello? Are you okay? What’s happening? I’ve dispatched some officers. They’re already in the town centre. Only a couple of minutes away from the pub. Please stay on the phone. Tell me what’s happening.
No intelligible words.
Call ended at 6:25pm
For the remainder of the call, though I tried to communicate with the man, I heard only muffled noises. Crunching and what almost sounded like howls of agony, though the connection was garbled. I pretended that the sounds were perfectly explainable, but that didn’t ease the knot in my gut. I knew something was dreadfully wrong.
Responders arrived at 6:25pm, finding the phone of Robert Anderson outside The Old Arms. And Officer Jeffrey Ross claimed that he had seen something in the alley beside the establishment. The body of a man being ‘misshapen’ by a figure in the darkness. Misshapen. That was the word he used repeatedly.
Officer Isabelle Donaldson didn’t see what her partner alleged to have seen. It was ‘there one moment and gone the next’, in Officer Ross’ words. And he called the alleged figure at the end of the alley ‘recognisable’. Ross told investigators that the perpetrator’s ‘costume’ reminded him of the one Kit Jenson used to wear for his performances at Greentree Theatre.
~Call 4 – 9:19pm~
Operator: Police. What’s your emergency?
Caller: Oh. I needed an ambulance.
Operator: Okay. Well, I –
Caller: – Shush. I need a little bit of quiet, please.
Operator: What is the nature of your–
Caller: – I said ‘shush’.
Operator: I’m afraid I won’t shush. This is an emergency line. Would you like me to patch you through to the ambulance services?
Caller: Maybe I do need the police.
Operator: Okay. What’s happened? What’s happening?
Caller: No, forget it. Forget it. I spoke out of line. It’s… Oh, hello, Kit.
Operator: Is somebody else there? What’s the nature of your emergency?
Caller: I said I was sorry. I said I was sorry. I said I was sorry. I said I was sorry.
Operator: Are you okay? Please tell what’s happening. I want to help. Are you not able to talk right now? Is that the problem?
Caller: You’re right, Kit. I didn’t understand your art. Oh, I just didn’t understand, but I do now. I’m sorry I didn’t applaud. Yes. No, of course. The town deserves it. Every last one of us. You’re right. You’re right. You’re right. You’re–
Operator: – Miss, who is in the room with you? Would you be able to give me some sign that you’re in danger? A code word, perhaps? How about ‘house’?
Caller: I’m not ignoring you, sir. I was just talking to him. You will be able to help me. I need somebody to come and find me, so the place doesn’t smell afterwards, you see. It would be a shame for the smell to tarnish the place. Like it did when she…
Operator: Are you having thoughts? What is your state of mind right now? If you give me your location, I –
Caller: – Round Mills. Apartment 201. Yes, I know, Mandy. I know. But he makes such a beautiful point. You see, if I try and fail, I will finally appreciate his art. That’s all he wants. Just a little appreciation. It’s the only way, Mandy. The only way.
Splintering sounds were audible.
Operator: Miss? Miss? What’s happening? I’ve dispatched an ambulance and a couple of officers to your location. If you tell me what’s happened to you, I might be able to help. It’ll certainly help the paramedics.
More splintering sounds were followed by a distant scream.
Caller: Oh. Yes. Yes, you were right, Kit. I got it all wrong. My legs don’t bend that way. Not like yours. My arms. No, I’m not like you, Kit. Not the Incredible Kit. Not the… Oh? Yes, I suppose I should try that too. Yes. I’ll try bending my neck. If I just –
One final splinter sounded.
Call ended at 9:27pm.
Quiet followed the woman’s unfinished sentence. Not silence.
I heard the sound of applause. The slight patter of a person’s slow, measured claps, muffled by the bad reception of the call. And sobbing. Two terrible noises that immediately ceased when the front door of the apartment burst open.
Responders found nobody in the apartment but Rachel Jenson, the sister of Mandy Jenson. Rachel was mangled in a way that made one paramedic vomit, and I’ve been told no more than that. I only learnt of the aftermath, detailed in this post, through a friend of mine who works at Greentree Police Station.
I keep thinking about the scream that I heard. One that, I am certain, did not come from Rachel Jenson. She sounded joyous. Her voice became increasingly unhinged as she brutally contorted her body into sickening configurations.
Thinking about it, I do remember Kit’s final show being quite lacklustre. A performance that took place shortly before his death. I didn’t attend, but I heard from other Greentree residents that he fumbled the finish. Kit attempted to escape from a box in a contorted position, but he failed. His wife had to assist him. There was no applause. Only concerned murmuring from the crowd.
People had speculated for years that something wasn’t quite right with the man, and that’s why I keep thinking about what Rachel said. What Ian said. What all of the callers said. Stories of adoration. Appreciation. Rejection. Anger.
Things make a little more sense, when viewed from the right angle. These stories serve as interlinking pieces of a puzzle, forming the picture of a man who might’ve wanted to punish those who did not applaud his disappointing performance. A disgruntled artist’s revenge against the town that dismissed him. A wife who dismissed him.
In truth, Kit Jenson was simply a sick man. People had heard the whispers about his abusive tendencies for years. All it taken was one bad day to push him over the edge. So, such a man would surely want to hurt all those who did not appreciate him. Not only Mandy.
However, even if that were the case, it wouldn’t explain the entirety of that dreadful day of calls. Kit Jenson died two years ago.
Who, or what, did people see in Greentree?

2 AC, Sisterton
The wind that blew over muddy Sisterton had a cold bite to it, the first taste of the autumn gales. It swept through the cobbled streets and alleyways where it rattled shutters on wattle-and-daub walls. In the harbor, it caused the fishing skiffs and merchants’ caravels to creak and groan at their moorings.
There were not many warships anymore, they had all gone up in dragonfire and lay at the bottom of the Narrow Sea, alongside their captains and crew. It was often said among men of means in the Sisters that one ought to teach one son to make his living by the sword, and another by the sail. Loran’s brother Hallis had been the captain of Sea Shrike, one of the finest vessels in the islands. It had not been among the few that had limped back to the Sisters half charred to deliver word of their defeat.
Now scores of candles burned day and night at the foot of the stone relief of the Stranger outside the stave-built sept in the center of town, and one could not pass without hearing the wails of weeping mothers. Today though, no one cried at the foot of the stranger. There were only a few knelt prostrate in silent prayer. Septon Gollard called to him when he saw Loran approach, and plodded down the muddy steps to meet him on the road.
“Ser Loran, Seven keep you,” the septon was a sallow faced, kindly man with a brown salted beard. Loran only half listened as he recited a longer prayer under his breath before the knight.
“Mother keep you from harm, Warrior guide your hand, Smith keep your sword true.”
“I bid you take these to the garrison, and Septon Talbert in the castle.” He handed the knight a string of wood carved talismans. They clattered together in the breeze that penetrated into the inner streets of the town. The knight nodded solemnly, and tied them to his belt.
The people he passed as he climbed the hill to the keep greeted him with respect and well wishes, though it felt more like a funeral procession than any great honor. At the crest, Tidewater Keep sat gray, squat, and ugly. Bristling with any manner of weapon the Queen’s men had been able to pull together; six scorpions built on the islands along with three ballista seized from Braavosi pirates earlier that year. Loran knew they also had a retinue of longbowmen a hundred strong, and what remained of the Mariners with their crossbows, though not many had returned from their first encounter with the dragon. And what good did those crossbows do then?
By the time he reached the courtyard of the castle, the wind had given way to overcast skies full of dark, languid clouds. If the Seven watched over them, they’d send them rain tonight. He found Harmen Halfpike near the castle’s front gate, where the man oversaw two squires guiding an ox and cart through the passage. The oxcart was piled high with iron quarrels for the artillery, which Loran spared a glance at while they passed.
“These are the bolts that will kill a dragon?”
“So she says,” replied Harmen with a shrug. Loran couldn’t tell if he believed it himself. “What I can say is I’ve seen ‘em puncture steel and stone alike, they’re the best we’ve got.”
As the cart cleared the entrance, Harmen began to walk and Loran followed, toward the stone stairs that would lead to the battlements. The courtyard was busy with soldiers wearing sigils from across Sweetsister. If they weren’t occupied with the daily maintenance of the castle, they played dice and cards, or sparred. He spied Borrells of Breakwater, Fogstone, and Tallstaves, and men of the houses of Halfpike and Chesser. He even saw sigils from beyond Sweetsister, Longthorpes and Torrents, Malens and Whitecrests.
“Why has she brought all these men here to die?” Loran’s question came suddenly as they walked up the stairs.
“Do you have so little faith, Ser Loran?”
He didn’t think the Halfpike had much more than him.
He replied, hushed, and with a glance over his shoulder to make sure no one else could hear. “I just don’t understand… Why are we picking a fight with a beast we can’t defeat?”
Harmen stopped short there, he was taking the question more seriously now. He paused a moment before giving Loran his reply. “You lost a brother with the fleet, aye? I lost two. The Queen lost more family than the both of us put together. She wants to kill the thing that did it, plain and simple.”
Loran nodded, slow. He spoke with a newfound resignation. “And then what? Sue for peace? They have other dragons.”
The Halfpike shrugged, he had a wide mouth that pursed in a similar sort of reply. “Some still believe this will end with negotiation, others that the conquerors’ dragons are all tied up keeping the other kingdoms in check. Others still…” Now he lowered his voice too. “Well some believe Prince Steffon might guide us more rightly. If you want my advice… prepare for what you can, and make your peace with the rest.”
His watch came in the evening, long hours on the battlements, squinting at every shadow in the sky. There was a tension always on the walls, they waited day and night for its coming. Many were certain their Queen’s actions would provoke a dragon, and some thought that was her intention entirely. When he stopped craning his neck and looked instead over Sisterton before him, he watched as the sun set over the muddy town and one by one, the lights in the windows faded.
It was not long before the only buildings where lights burned were those known by name to him. Breakwater and the Nightlamp were still illuminated on the far side of the harbor, and he spotted Gollard’s sept in the center of town. Vigils and sermons had been held night and day for a week now. The same went for Mother Tyta’s motherhouse at the end of Whaler’s Way, where braziers burned a soft glow from the shrines chiseled in the cliff face.
The only other light came from down by the water, at the crooked intersection where the Lily Palace sat across from The Line and Hook. He thought that if these were truly his last days, he’d much rather be there now spending the last of his coin on a night with Rhea than standing here on the wall, holding his breath whenever a gull passed overhead.
When he was relieved of the watch, he removed himself to the sept where he found Septon Talbert and delivered the wooden talismans he had been given by the other man of the cloth. The septon of Tidewater was a kind man too, though he had heard much already of his weakness for drink. He clasped each of the carved shingles of wood, mumbling to himself before returning his gaze to Loran to offer a genuine thanks.
The sept he preached from was a seven sided chamber of dark stone with large glass windows on all sides save the threshold. He had hoped the septon’s prayers would distract him from the dreaded waiting, but Loran could see too much of the ocean from the large windows. His eyes kept drifting there, worried that he might catch sight of the dreaded answer to their treason.
“Good knights of our Queen, you come here to me as stalwart protectors of our islands, of the house of Sunderland and our way of life”.
He spared a glance around the sept, recognizing many faces in the crowd of knights. Knelt ready in their armor, others not. He saw Doran Chesser, who had broken three lances on him at Lord Sunderland’s tourney years prior. Alaric Borrell and Asper Whitecrest, who he’d hunted an infamous pirate with when they were only squires. Lord Guyard Borrell, and his sons Parmen and Quentyn. Balan and Rupert, the young princes were there too, dressed in their blue and green livery.
“May the Warrior guide your blade and bolt, may the Father keep you from harm, may you find strength in the Smith and wisdom in the Crone.”
As Loran looked up, he thought he saw a faint light in the clouds, far enough that it could have been a signal from Littlesister or even just the reflection of the moon.
“Know that Queen Marla keeps the Seven close and in turn they will stand by your side against this unholy enemy. Know that the Father and Mother will…”
A hushed whisper moved through the room. He looked up again now and saw the outline of something winged where the moon pushed soft light through the clouds. He knelt again and prayed silently to the Mother that it was only a seabird.
A bell began to ring, then they heard a clamor and shouting on the battlements above. Soon after, it appeared again, bigger this time. Even from a distance, the way it moved was unmistakable. Ser Doran stood up and frantically grasped Talbert’s arm for a moment, the septon whispered something under his breath and the knight left the room nearly at a run. Others who had come with their arms and armor did the same, making for the battlements. After them, the rest rushed for the barracks. The cramped hall was crowded with competing tides of fighting men rushing to their posts and servants, women, and children making for the deepest sections of the castle.
Loran spared a glance over his shoulder, through the arched threshold. The septon had begun to cry.

This is hand-built stuff that I made, mostly relatively unique or heavily tweaked designs built on vero or point to point. Many are housed in upcycled tins, a few in Hammond boxes. They all run on standard 9v pedal power. These aren't clones for the most part, unless they are; but normally I actually monkey about with the circuits quite a bit or just test out wacky ideas. If you want something nobody else has, you're in the right place…
I have the handmades valued in 4 tiers:

• D tier are my trashy cheapies, made from reclaimed components. I don't feel right asking a lot for reclaimed components. I value them in the $40 - $50 range, not really picky about what I trade for. I might even take dirt pedals for these. Only got one left, trying to phase out this tier.
• C tier are the cheapies made with new components. I value these in the $50 - $60 range, not very picky here either.
• B tier are my average builds, I will trade for pedals in the $65-$90 value range, depending on the complexity of the build. A little pickier, but still pretty open.
• A tier are my happy happy builds, usually more complex or just nicer quality. I will be picky about trades for these. (But still not Boutique prices; I have no delusions). It's probably less about value here and more about how much I actually want the thing you have. Think in the $90 - $130 range.

Creature from the planet Chyowngg	B	PIC Demo	Prototype of a unique fuzz I've been developing that I call the Chyowngg fuzz. It's a 2-stage octaver that gives a bright synthy tone with a distinctive envelope (hence the name). You can toggle each stage from octave to non-octave mode for a variety of interesting timbres. Also has a tone control, but the tone control is before the octave stages so it results in interesting behaviors depending on the switch settings. It's in a tin meant to be painted like an alien, though some say it looks more like a triceratops.
Dumbo's Bazzrite Fussrite	C	PIC Demo	A bazz-fussified mosrite fuzzrite circuit I cobbled together in point-to-point wiring style. Housed in a little Dumbo puzzle tin with GLITTER! Controls are for balance (kind of tone-cum-gain) and volume.
Wiff Spwinkles on Top	C	PIC Demo	This point-to-point fuzz lives in the same neighborhood as the Harmonic Percolator, but has a few differences. I altered the way the gain knob works, and added a switch to toggle bass cut. It's housed in an ice-creamity welly tin.

A Note about mods/repairs/custom jobs: Feel free to shoot me your ideas, but probably I'm leaning toward not doing these. Expect to pay/trade way more for something custom than what I ask for the pedals I've already built.

I’ve spent a lot of May being caught up in Hugo reading, but I’m still plugging away with my regular magazines, and I’ve found at least one story that I expect will be in the front of my mind when thinking about Hugo nominations for next year. So let’s get to it!

Clarkesworld

The May issue of Clarkesworld features three novelettes wedged in the middle of five short stories, opening with Fishy by Alice Towey, which features a woman combing through her late father’s office for information about a research breakthrough he’d been hiding from a predatory business partner, all told through the eyes of an underutilized AI fish-finder. It’s not really a story that’s going to surprise an experienced genre reader, but while it may play close to type, it’s an entertaining way to spend a few thousand words, with a satisfying ending.
Next, Fiona Moore returns to the post-apocalyptic world of “The Spoil Heap” and “Morag’s Boy” with The Portmeirion Road, a third functionally standalone tale about a woman with a knack for fixing up old tech in a world that isn’t producing anything new. This installment sees Morag traveling to a nearby city in search of a group of archivists whose pharmaceutical knowledge may help a sickly child, but remaining leery of the archivists wanting something from her as well. The immediate medical concern may make this a tad less slice-of-life than “Morag’s Boy,” but it continues the trend of pleasant reads focusing on making everyday life work in a radically altered world.
Next, In Which Caruth is Correct by Carolyn Zhao imagines a world in which people relive their past regrets by entering—and sometimes forever disappearing into—time loops. This story features a lot of therapy, as the lead tries to respond to the singularities that seem to arise so regularly in her life and have been responsible for the disappearance of so many of her family members. With a twisty and wildly creative sci-fi premise and plenty of time spent digging into difficult relationships with an absent mother and present father, this was a real pleasure to read.
Also a pleasure to read was the issue’s first novelette, the slow, contemplative The Brotherhood of Montague St. Video by Thomas Ha (incidentally, it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize the video store was on Montague Street and was not in some way saintly). In a world where almost everyone experiences their lives filtered through some measure of augmented reality, the lead is baffled to find an old book that doesn’t seem to engage with any tech. A trip to the restoration specialists working on his late mother’s old videos is enough to warn him that there are those who don’t take kindly to such artifacts, kicking off a thriller-shaped plot that is anything but a thriller in tone and mood. Instead, there’s lots of reflection on memory and preservation, particularly surrounding the bittersweet or defective. There were moments where the thriller plot felt a bit too hard-to-believe, but the uncanny atmosphere, messy familial and romantic relationships, and fascinating themes make this my early leader for favorite novelette of 2024.
The Texture of Memory, of Light by Samara Auman also features a world with augmented memory and a character driven in large part by the memory of her late mother. But unlike the previous story, it’s less about preserving memory and more about working through it, with the lead struggling to bear her mental burdens and figure out how to live in light of her past. There’s a lot of messy interiority here, as well as a significant organized labor subplot, and it makes for an interesting read, though one I found myself wishing had been fleshed out more, especially toward the end.
The issue’s final novelette is The Blinding Light of Resurrection by Rajeev Prasad, another tale located pretty firmly within the familiar, though quite a bit less upbeat than “Fishy.” Instead, this is a cost of obsession story, as a brilliant pioneer of medical technology breaks all the rules to keep his wife from succumbing to terminal cancer, no matter what the cost. Veteran genre readers have surely encountered stories like this one before, but it’s an engaging one that makes it easy to see both the lead’s perspective and the wrongheadedness of it.
The final two short stories were some of the highlights of the issue, beginning with The Weight of Your Own Ashes by Carlie St. George, which starts with the stunning opener:

Alice wants to hold a funeral for me, which is disconcerting because I’m not dead.

What follows is some delightful alien strangeness, centered on a person whose species lives their lives spread over multiple bodies. There’s a pretty overt message here about accepting those who are different, with an explicit tie to gender minorities, but the delicious messiness of the relationships offers plenty of tremendous complexity underpinning a straightforward theme.
Finally, Our Father by K.J. Khan is a very short story told in second-person to the narrator’s departed mother. The description of present-day family is interspersed with memories of a lengthy and difficult journey through space, a journey fraught in ways revealed to the lead only through hindsight and the wisdom of age. Tremendously affecting for such a short piece, it reminds me something of a complement to Thomas Ha's “For However Long,” another compact and deeply family-oriented story that was one of my favorites in 2023.
The non-fiction section includes a fascinating editorial diving into Neil Clarke’s attempts to fight AI-generated spam. It’s very much not a solved problem, but Clarke offers lots of information on what has worked so far and what the downsides are, in hopes that it will help spur the industry into ever more effective strategies.
There’s also a piece on bees in real life and in science fiction, along with interviews with Andrea Hairston and Andrea Kriz. This is one of the rare months where neither author interview added to my TBR, but they’re still a lovely window into how writers see their own work and a great opportunity to get a sense of what’s out there beyond the handful of books getting the biggest marketing pushes.

This month’s longish short fiction from GigaNotoSaurus is the short story Lacquer Box Trick by Eris Young, a story about feuding magicians thrown together against the societal prejudices plaguing them all. There’s no single element here that truly steals the show, but it’s an all-round solid, enjoyable story that will be of particular interest to fans of period English settings and tales centering racial or gender minorities.

As someone who has an affinity for cheesy 2000’s pop, I’ve always been a die-hard fan of Brooke Allison - one of the early Britney knockoffs a la’ Willa Ford and Mandy Moore. For those who are unaware of who she is, she debuted in 2001 and is mostly known for her debut single ‘The Kiss Off (Goodbye)’ that samples the AOL “goodbye!” sound. With her debut single managing at peak at #28 on The Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and receiving heavy rotation on Nickelodeon, as well as garnering praise from the likes of Michael Jackson and Mya (the former deeming her to be someone with “extraordinary talent who has been touched by God."), things were looking very promising for her. Unfortunately, both her album and follow-up single failed to be successful and she scrapped her solo career.
She managed to bounce back in the late 2000’s by joining YLA/BG5 - a girl group managed by Kris Jenner. They failed to make it big but still managed to temporarily make a name for themselves by serving as backup vocalists for various Selena Gomez & The Scene albums (as well as opening for her tour) and bagging a collab with Vanessa Hudgens titled ‘$$$EX’ that peaked at #11 on The Billboard Dance Club Songs chart.
After YLA/BG5 quickly disbanded, Brooke signed to an indie label and promised her fans that she would be releasing her second album ‘Still Fighting’ under the name Brooke Adams. Unfortunately, in late 2018, Brooke suffered two cardiac arrests that resulted in a diffuse brain injury due to lack of oxygen. Her mother helped make a GoFundMe in order to help with medical expensives but they sadly were only able to garner $30.3K out of their $160K goal. As of 2024, Brooke still remains in a vegetative state and is residing in a nursing home.
I wanted to make this thread in order to not only see if anyone here is aware of her music and short-lived success, as well as notify those who question whatever happened to her. I find this all to be really eerie and honestly consider it to be one of the saddest stories of any pop girl.

Pre-Offseason: Trade Deadline/Draft

Round 1, Pick 8: Jac Caglianone (1B/LHP, Florida)
We couldn’t pass up the chance to get an Ohtani replacement in Caglianone. Caglianone is a 6-foot-5 physical beast, and he has top of the class raw power, shown by his Division I-leading 33 home runs in 2023. As a pitcher, he touches triple digits with his fastball and he introduced a 90-mph cutter that he featured more than his slider this fall as well as a solid changeup. He’s not exactly Ohtani, but he is a rare type of player that fits in the Ohtani group of two ways.
Round 2, Pick 6: Billy Amick (3B, Tennessee)
We get an absolute steal in Amick in Round 2, who could really develop into a solid bat in the majors. He has a quality right-handed swing and repeatedly barrels balls, but frequently chases pitches out of the strike zone. The hot corner might be a problem for Amick in the beginning defensively, but he could develop into an average player defensively, and if he doesn’t, he could always move to first base.
Round 2, Pick 36: Joey Oakie (SP, Ankeny Centennial High) (Scouting Director Recommendation)
A good find by scouting director Tim McIlvaine, another steal in Oakie. His fastball is his best pitch, touching 97 on the radar gun, but his velo will mainly sit at 92-94 mph. His slider is a good secondary to compliment the fastball as well. He also has a curveball and changeup that could develop.
Round 3, Pick 7: Jackson Linn (CF, Tulane) (Scouting Director Recommendation)
Linn slashed .305/.356/.678 with 16 HR for Tulane in 2024. He will struggle with drawing walks, but his combination of raw power, speed, and arm make for an exciting prospect in the future.

End of Season 1
To say this team disappointed this season would be an understatement. We finished 63-99, last in the division. We were one of the best hitting teams in all of baseball, with our 226 total home runs ranking 3rd in the NL, led by Miguel Sano’s 39 bombs and Logan O’Hoppe’s 34. You’re probably wondering why Mike Trout isn’t one of those players, and that’s because he got hurt AGAIN, with a torn labrum. Because of this, he only played 34 games. We went 16-18 in those games.
Pitching was the big weak spot, as even though we had a potential Cy Young season from Reid Detmers (11-10, 3.82 ERA, 190 K), the team had a combined ERA of 5.18. This was due to bad seasons from Patrick Sandoval (8-14, 5.86) and Tyler Anderson (5-10, 5.88) and nobody wanted to give me any starters at the deadline, so I was stuck with them. Things will most definitely change in that department as we enter the offseason.

Just like many other posts that are on here, I wanted to give my honest thoughts about the game. - I know this is a long one, so there is a TLDR at the bottom.
So I just completed the games after having 99 hours on my save file. I managed to get all characters, but I haven't started any of the post game content, so my end game party is still in their 60s along with not completing any of the mini game stories (just far enough in each of them to recruit characters).
As someone who fell in love with the RPG genre because of the Suikoden series, I couldn't contain my excitement when I saw the kickstarter for ECHH. I backed the game without a second thought and waited patiently for 4 years while the game was brought to life before our eyes.
I'll break my thoughts up into categories in order to organize them better.
Story
I'll start with the story itself first. When first booting up the game, and really throughout the experience, it's very easy to see the inspirations, it wears them on its sleeve with pride, and by extension is difficult to separate this game from it's main influencer, Suikoden. I feel that the story is good, it follows a fairly brisk pacing all the way to the end of the game. Nothing was a slog to get through, however the brisk pace led to some areas of the game feeling rushed, as well as some characters and relationships fall flatter than they should have. The friendship between Nowa and Seign felt incomplete. There was the beginning sequence in the runebarrows where they shared some words at the fire, but that was really it. If Seign's story had been fleshed out a bit more, even a cutscene while in Galdea showing us how Nowa's influence was starting to affect him, vs. the throw away comment made by one of the Galdean team members, it could have gone a long way to making the duel feel that more impactful. Marketing and making Seign one of the main characters, and not really start to flesh out any of his story until he joins the team about halfway through the game feels like a bit of an odd choice. Hopefully the DLC they release will add more, but it would be an odd choice to lock story beats behind additional paid DLC.
Now granted, the influences this game is grabbing from are grand sweeping stories that move very quickly from one plot point to the next. While juggling a large cast of characters will make a few things fall to the back burner, the story relevant characters should have been more fleshed out. My other big concern with the story is that they toyed with moments of real impact that would make the story feel like the stakes were more in your face, but turned away at the last second, or decided to pull the punches. One of the biggest moments that could have added real stakes to the story was when they teased at Nowa's home town of Kyshiri being attacked and then razed. They have all the villagers escape, but then in the very next moment, they are able to rebuild the town. Having the town burned to the ground and his people homeless would have given Nowa more reason to actually want to be leader of the Alliance.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and the groundwork it lays for the world at large, because it just makes me want to find out more about it. I just wish they didn't turn away from some choices that would have made the story more impactful.
Gameplay Now it's difficult to discuss the story without also talking about gameplay, as they partly go hand in hand.
It plays like your standard rpg that got ripped out of the 90s. You run around to different areas of the map completing quests, crawl through some dungeons, fight some bosses, all with a party of 6 people. Each character you can pick to fight can be placed in either the front or back rows, and depending on the placement you'll be able to hit different enemies. Short range (like Seign) should be placed in the front row and can only hit front row enemies. Medium range (like Nowa) can hit enemies while being placed in either row, but can only hit back row enemies while being in the front row. Long range (any archer style character), ideally should be placed in the back row and can hit enemies on either row. There's definitely a lot more that goes into party composition, including picking the right support character for the task at hand, but overall if you've played an RPG before, you won't have too much difficulty understanding the core mechanics of this game.
There are also some additional story required minigames (more on these later) in the form of 1 on 1 character duels and large scale war battles, that help to shake up the formula some if things start to feel stale at times. Like I said earlier, this feels like an RPG ripped out of the 90s, some of the mechanics lend to that. Dedicated save points, healing at specific areas (other than using items or magic), and random encounters can make this feel a little dated at times, but I feel adds to the charm. In a time where most games have been streamlined and modernized, it's refreshing almost to not have your hand held and actually needing to think about conserving resources.
Overall the gameplay is what I was expecting coming into this game, and I was not let down by it. However there are parts where the gameplay itself, or choices made, causes issues with the story, and that's where some of my concerns are. For example near the end of the game, you have a war battle followed by a group of party fights through the town of Eltisweiss in order to liberate it, however you just get cutscenes of the other 3 major towns, Hishahn, Yarnaan, and Athrabalt. The time you spend in those areas is just as important, but they get relegated to cutscenes? If each of these cities had been given the same treatment it would have made the game feel less rushed at the end, and generally just given more weight to this end game section, as well as not make the end game feel generally rushed. I really like the idea of the 3 main characters Nowa, Seign, and Marisa but because of how underutilized it was, it made the story fall a little flat. There are literally glimpses of moments where having the 3 main characters makes the story feel wide and sweeping, but there are literally 4 -5 sections total where it's really used Seign in the rune lab, the 3 party split in Snowpeak Pass, the 3 party split in Athrabalt during the Revenant invasion, and Marisa in Harganthia Castle. There's also a small section after you get your castle where you control Marisa to essentially see a cutscene with some forshadowing about Leene. Even when it is used, it's really for such a short section each time that little development happens. The story could have really benefitted from a system similar to the Trinity Sight system from Suikoden where each of the main characters had different chapters to play through to get more story from each and really build more attachment.
I think another gameplay element that feels lacking is actually the lack of any real penalties or a perma-death mechanic. There is one instance you can permanently lose a character, but it's only if you don't recruit all the characters before the end game section. In the Suikoden series, characters could die, even story relevant characters. It gave a sense of tension and realness to the war that was being fought. I think the lack of this mechanic made the story less impactful overall.
Difficulty As mentioned earlier, I have been playing RPGs for many years, so maybe my experience has influenced this, but I seriously felt the game was very easy. So much in fact, outside of boss battles, I literally was able to play the game on auto battle. Granted, I did play the game on normal mode, but I didn't overlevel my characters. Near the end of the game I did start to play around with runes and wanted to level up weapons and outfit with top equipment, but that really only affected the last dungeon for me. There were 4 parts that were actually difficult for me: the Proving Grounds boss, the bridge gauntlet right after the rune lab, the one on one duel between Marisa and Diradhe, and the final duel between Nowa, Seign, and Marisa vs. Aldric I will definitely be exploring the options to up the difficulty for me when I replay this game, so I'm very happy they were included for the hard mode option. I also found it slightly disheartening that 2 of the strongest characters in the game, Iugo and Yuske, are able to be found at the very beginning. Now I do understand that it was my choice to use them throughout most of my playthrough (before completing any endgame content), but it would have been nice to see those 2 given as a reward for a particularly hard mission, Like Momo or Dijkstra, vs. being just given to you for free.
Minigames/Side Content
Next up are my thoughts over each of the minigames and the side content. Since there are multiple parts, I'll talk about each individually.
1 on 1 Duels - This was frankly a confusing mechanic. The tutorials briefly explain how to control this mechanic, but I would be lying if I said I could complete the story required ones without looking up a guide. There are 4 story required duels, Seign at the bridge, Aldric in the Rune Lab, Diradhe in Harganthia, and Aldric at the very end, and only 1 non story required, Recruiting El Alicanto. I do feel like a few more could have been added in such as recruiting Ruifan, you're literally required to fight him 1 on 1, why not make this a duel? Also in the opening cutscene of the game there is a part where it looks like Wayve and Marisa are fighting each other, why not turn that part, (frankly I can't even remember when that scene even happens in the game), into a duel? Maybe a ceremony Marisa needed to take part in, or something? The duels that are here make sense to the story, but are also, for the most part, "scripted". Though you CAN win the duel against Seign, it's very unlikely you'll do it in your first playthrough without overleveling and careful planning. The 1st duel against Aldric is scripted to be lost, and the last 2 story required duels in the game you are required to win. Overall, the duels are alright for me, but it could have been cool to see it expanded into a form of tournament side content in your home base. You'd be required to fight and win 3 or 4 duels in succession in order to win a good piece of gear or stronger runes. I do understand that there's already a lot here in the game, and development of content like this would take awhile, but more on that later.
War Battles - Similar to the duels, this mechanic wasn't very well explained, during the story, but each war battle fought was pretty much an interactive cutscene. Just like with duels, I do wish a few more story required battles were put in, instead of just cutscenes for liberating Hishahn, Yarnaan, and Athrabalt, but the ones that are here are serviceable, if not kind of boring. As stated earlier the lack of a perma-death mechanic really hurt this section. They gave you essentially a mini strategy rpg battle where even if you have units that flee the map, there's no penalty. The only people that die during these fights are just kickstarter backers who paid enough to see their name in the game twice. There's no attachment, it's flavor text, that while cool to see, clutters the screen. I do like that you have the ability to unlock war battles as a minigame you can play in your castle, but even this was done almost as a bandaid because Rabit and Bear couldn't implement the desired "always online" idea of other players attacking your castle. Like with duels, the war battles that are here are serviceable, and maybe my stance will change on that as I play the optional ones in the base.
Card Mini Game - Out of all the optional unlockable content, this is probably my favorite. I like that you have the ability to battle all the heroes in the game and even the villians too. Having a character being unlocked through this too is also a fun way to have you get familiar with it. It has just enough strategy to keep you thinking, with good rewards for completing matches.
Cooking battles - In the state this was in when the game first launched, it was a snoozefest. You could spam the same 3 dishes each battle and win. As I'm playing on switch (I have words on this too) I hadn't gotten the update that fixed the scoring by the time I finished my playthrough. I will say having to wait realworld time before the next duel came up was also kind of a bummer and made Celia my second to last optional recruit. Hopefully the bug fix has made this better and more worth playing.
Beigoma - This is essentially a Beyblade knock off, that while has some entertaining dialogue, really drug on and made my last optional recruit, like many other people here, be Reid. The idea is great and fun, but the execution has polarizing opinions. The matches themselves were fun, but really only good in small doses. Also, with how many Spinadiers are in the game, and the fact you have to beat all of them in order to see this sidestory to its end, they should have given an indicator for each one you beat. Maybe above their heads put a Beigoma with fire around it for those you haven't beaten, and just a plain Beigoma for those you have already beaten. On my next playthrough, I'll definitely be working through this story line as I go, vs. trying to cram most of it at the end, though it really doesn't help that most of the Beigoma that can actually beat people are at the end, with 3 of them being in the optional dungeon Vilashnu, and a few others being in Harganthia. It's almost like the game wants Reid to be the last character you get.
Fishing - Honestly outside of needing to catch the 1 character related fish, I kinda forgot this was there, it has that small of an impact. Though if you don't ever catch the Wheel-Eye Bream, you will never be able to recruit Huang, and you'll also lock yourself out of the entire guild mission mechanic, which makes base building more difficult. Now the fish you catch can and do help towards cooking dishes for party buffs, but to make this minigame bigger, and one more people would play, a tournament style thing with rewards could have gone a long way.
Eggfoot Racing - This is a pretty fun minigame that sees you raising the egg enemies and racing them against each other. The mini game is really the raising portion where you feed your eggfoots, breed them, and prep them for races. The races themselves are automated and as long as you have the right stats, you'll win. My only recommendation is when you start earning the "egg" item, specifically the "regular egg", don't sell any of them, just store them, because you'll need 5 of them in order to unlock Paquia and Mandie for the Eggfoot Arena in your town, and you don't want to have to go grinding for them unnecessarily. It's a great time sink minigame and something to use to detox from a long day at work while you have a favorite tv show on in the background.
Theater - I have heard nothing but good things about this side content. The fact that any character can be placed into any role and every line is voiced is frankly amazing. There are 5 scripts total, 4 of them being locked to purchasing in a store, that inventory resets based on real world time. Other than acquiring each script, there's really nothing bad about this, and a very worthy addition.
Hotsprings - This is another area that gives small cutscenes and interactions between characters in your party (and also some who can't be placed into the party). It's good for some world building and character development. I also like that, just like all cutscenes, this is fully voiced as well. Maybe I just haven't found all the optional decorations, but I do feel like there's a smaller selection then I'd like to decorate with.
Basebuilding - The basebuilding in this game is actually a huge aspect of developing and growing. Pretty much all the optional side content is locked behind expanding your castle, and even some characters, Shixeen and Celia, you can only get by having certain nodes of the upgrade plan built. I think this is a great mechanic that allows you to see your town grow organically, and makes spending your time there valuable, from having shops that allow you to outfit all your characters at once, being able to decorate your town how you see fit, to being able to take part in the side content and minigames, heck you can't even access the post game content without building your base up. My only issue with the base building is that during the course of the main story, getting your castle to level 4 and all the perks you can unlock comes really just too late to make use of any of it for story purposes, granted you can and will easily use all of this for the post game, so it makes some sense, but for a casual player who might not revisit the game or play any post game content, not being able to get required materials until the optional Vilashnu dungeon (recruiting literally one of the last optional characters in the game) and the Harganthia dungeon (which you really only have a very small window to use any of the materials gained before the final dungeon), it makes upgrading the castle anything past a few nodes in level 4 seem like more of a chore for completionists than anything else.Those concerns aside, I really like what basebuilding brought to the table, and it kept me wanting to grind for more resources to see what I would unlock next. I hope a similar if not more expanded mechanic appears in any follow up games.
Overall if you want a game with things to sink your teeth into, you seriously have it in spades here, and honestly I'm really happy with everything that was added, even if some things fell a little flatter than others.
Performance
You know that this was coming. You can't talk about this game without addressing the performance issues and concerns. Now I will say I played on Nintendo Switch, mostly docked but occasionally handheld. To say there's issues would be an understatement. The Switch had a hard time running this game. I had the game crash and freeze on me multiple times, my first time was actually when you get your castle. That whole sequence where you have the first war battle, need to escape Eltisweiss, have the duel on the bridge, and then the cutscene at the ruined castle right before converting it to your home base. Honestly it's like an hour or so to get through all of that the first time. There's no save points between starting the war battle and actually getting to Nowa's room the first time. Whatever it is about the castle town, the Switch will stutter and freeze up trying to load it. It's honestly a 50/50 shot it seems if the game will freeze or crash anytime you do anything there. I've had it freeze trying to play the card game, buying equipment and runes, putting stuff in storage, using the blacksmith, you name it, I've lost literal hours of time because of the freezes and crashes. My save file ended at 99 hours, but my actual game time (all spent on the 1 save file) ended at 106 hours. My big recommendation is save frequently. If you're not in the castle area, it's not as bad, but I would seriously save every 15 mins or so and if you're doing anything in the castle, save every 5 minutes. If you're building blueprints, save after every single one. I'm serious when I say it's that bad. Load times are also on the longer side too. It takes about 10 seconds to get into each battle, and even opening menus has a lag of a few seconds. Load times don't generally bother me, but it can get frustrating. The graphics and sound were good, no issues there that I was able to notice. One other thing that I did notice is sometimes when you load into a new area, Nowa would be moving in the last direction you were pushing on the stick without you actually touching the controller. A quick movement in the opposite direction fixed this, but it was odd to have happen, and a little annoying when I would go downstairs in the castle only to have Nowa run right back upstairs.
I did have also have the ability to play on Gamepass via cloud gaming on mobile and PC. Those issues I've talked about with the Switch, nonexistent. Game pass ran the game smooth with no issues outside any from the cloud gaming itself. I've gotten to Hishahn on a hard mode file on Gamepass, so I've definitely had a chance to experience a good chunk of the content without the lag and freezing.
In the game's current state on Switch, it's hard to recommend for those reasons, and if you have another method to play the game, go that route for sure. At the same time though, this game is an easy one to recommend, just be prepared if you get it on Switch.
Kickstarter Backer Experience
I was also one of those that backed the game on Kickstarter, so I'd like to briefly touch on that too. The development process was honestly very smooth. Rabbit and Bear communicated regularly throughout the 4 year process and really tried to include feedback from the backers. There were a lot of stretch goals unlocked because of backers too. If certain goals hadn't been reached, we may never had gotten Beigoma in the game, as well as many other features. They allowed backers to vote on additional DLC content and even the look and design of characters (Markus almost looked like Diradhe because of how close the votes were from the backers). Overall I had a good experience, and will gladly back another game from Rabbit and Bear if that's the route they chose. I can't speak to the current woes for physical backers either as I decided to go full digital and didn't get any additional rewards. I do hope those get fixed for those people affected.
I would like to say this though. I can only imagine the level of work that goes into developing a game of this scope, especially with the small team they had. They had to make decisions that were going to make things a little easier on them, but still tried to find a happy medium to include promised content in some fashion, optional war battles were supposed to be something where other player's armies could attack your base and you would have to defend from them, for what they were able to bring to the table is honestly almost more than I could dream of. Suikoden and games like it were no longer being made, and Suikoden games scratch an itch in the RPG landscape that not everything can achieve. Eiyuden Chronicles gave me the feelings of playing a Suikoden game all over again. For that I will be thankful to Rabbit and Bear and wish them success in bringing more games to life, I will personally be supporting all their future endeavors so I can see more to this amazing game world.
TLDR
I have definitely said my peace about my experience and thoughts with this game. This is an easy recommendation for RPG lovers and people who played Suikoden and want a similar experience. There is plenty of content to sink your teeth into, and well worth your time and money. It's a great first game in the series (outside of Rising) and I can't wait to see how the world gets expanded.

Legends are built upon truth and are told by those who wish to keep the mystique alive, or to warn would-be adventurers of the risk of chasing a story that may or may not be true. My name is Alex Moore and I’m no adventurer, I’m a journalist in study and avid listener of a variety of manic ramblings or tear-filled lies. For as long as I remember, I’ve been interested in scary stories, but over time became desensitized to them, like an addiction, a hunger to feel the rush of adrenaline that fades before I can enjoy it, yet the curiosity still lingers weakly as I lie awake before dawn.

Part 1

I’ve never been one to chase ramblings, even if there was a shred of truth behind it. Lurking websites from many countries, from paranormal to cryptid and everything in between. I kept telling myself that where I lived, there was no such luxury of scary stories worth telling overseas until one day, my grandfather told my mother a story that happened near him. It was a couple of years before he passed away and I was around three and I didn’t retain anything from that conversation until twenty years later when my mother told me about it while working on a creative writing project for college. I couldn’t help but scoff at the story in disbelief, but when she said that it was in the news, I became less skeptical.
For context, my grandfather was a private investigator and avid jogger in the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains, it was a quiet time, everyone would greet him as he jogged past and his work was flawless when studying a case, until a file crossed his desk. A case of a hitchhiker hijacking that ended in two people being mangled and their families viciously demanding answers; answers they would never have. This case took my grandfather across the province, looking for maybe a shred of evidence that would clarify the claims, he was almost out of time before an employee at a nearby fuel stop gave him the story.
My mother gave me his notebook from all those years ago, he was meticulous, every single note, question and answer was clearly written out and archived. His memory was his biggest ally in this situation, but as his years ran out, he told my mother that he wished he could have forgotten that one event. After he got his information, he called the station and they launched a formal investigation over the area. The chief ordered a couple of patrols to scour the roads and keep an eye out for “A Lady in White”.
I thought it was ominous, but not exceptional compared to say: The Goatman or a Werewolf. Still, I read through his notes while my mother told me his tale and his personal experience with this mysterious Lady in white.
“They sent out three teams and they patrolled the route for the next day or two, nothing came up.” My mother said as she directed me to the first note on the first day of investigation. They went back to the man who told them the story, as my grandfather described him: Old and frail, his hands most if the time in his pockets, his arms withered and skinny with a myriad of veins covering his wrinkled limbs and a strong Afrikaans accent to go with the large farm hat and white beard. My grandfather noted that there was something otherworldly about him, he couldn’t focus on his eyes let alone look at them at all.
“What did they find?” I asked, the subject poking my curiosity ever so slightly more as time passed.
“Nothing, not a single patrol reported anything out of the ordinary.” My mother replied, she continued to tell me that my grandfather sat in his hotel room, pouring over the evidence, bystander accounts. By the time he managed to find a solution, the sun had begun to rise and he opted to get some sleep. It was only during the night that he had to work on this case, as the evidence pointed out, near midnight he would find his answer.
‘After a few hours of dreamless sleep.’ He noted;’ I managed to find a way to get what we need. All of the patrols went out in teams of two or three. What if I went out alone. I’ll contact the chief and see if he’ll indulge me.’ My grandfather wrote down. I grew more curious as to why this would change anything, but I was curious nonetheless.
The notes continued as he was given permission to take an unmarked car and money for petrol and any supplies he would need, he lamented it would be a long night of driving on a cold, dark, almost endless stretch of road that snaked and weaved through the foothills and forests, almost as if the road dared not tread in the shadow of the mountain as it loomed in the background.
‘Start time; 8:15. I just got to my car and pulled into the rest stop to fill up on fuel and grab dinner. If my route is correct, this will take me down the road where most reports have been from and a good number of rest stops along the way, just in case I need to stop and refill on supplies. I’ll travel light and progress from there.’ My grandfather would take notes every fifteen minutes, though not much would happen in that time.
Just when he thought nothing was happening on the investigation, a car flew by in a blur, catching my grandfather off guard as his writing stopped abruptly and only picked up in a shaky and unsteady script much later. It was a space of twelve minutes before he updated his notes.
“Speeding car, had to give chase. Something was pulling me toward it. At first, I wondered why someone would be speeding along this tight road at this time, but I gave chase anyway.” I stopped and silently chuckled.
‘Nowadays, people would do that anyway. They build cars to do that, Grandpa.’ I thought. My mother looked at me curiously and I just waved it off, ‘thought of something funny’ I said.
“I lost sight of them for a while until I heard the unmistakable screech of tires and the sudden silence save for my motor’s engine running. I could tell I was near, maybe a minute or two.” I kept in mind that he was writing this either from the side of the road or, preferably, from the safety and warmth of a hotel room.
The next notes would give me the answer I carelessly chased.
“I approached the car, in the barrier. He must’ve locked up his brakes as the skid marks would go on for a while before the car hit the barrier and hung perilously over a steep edge. I reported the incident and called for a recovery vehicle.” He wrote, his hand becoming shaky and frantic by the untidy scribbles and scratches that he left on the page.
“I found something though, and may God protect my soul so I may never see this again. The car door nearest to the road was open and a trail shining in the bright moon light traveled down the road, a good thirty meters before I saw it; a woman with stained brown hair walking along the side of the road close to the active lane. Breath escaped my lungs into a heat mist in front of me, it was close to zero degrees in the dead of winter, yet this woman was wearing a white dress with no shoes and no jacket. Her left arm looked like it was just barely hanging on to her body, horribly mangled and bleeding. Instinct took me, I wanted to help her. As I approached her, I could hear her weeping, though no mist came from her lips as it spewed from mine. I put a hand on her shoulder, she was freezing cold but not shivering, she stopped and all was silent, her body began to jerk and shudder. I couldn’t fathom why, but she began to laugh. Her head turned toward me and that’s when I felt numb; her eyes were pure white, her skin appeared as a pale shade of blue and there were dark rings around her eyes, the corner of her mouth contorted into a twisted smile as half her jaw hung loosely from her face, her face was stained dark with red as her dress had dark streams trailing down her chest and stomach. My grandfather noted that the air around her was colder, he stood completely paralyzed as she vanished slowly into the darkness. He noted that he blacked out, waking up in his car, after stopping on the side of the road, his body collapsed in exhaustion for a short while, long enough for another patrol to drive up behind him and check on the situation.
“I told them all I could.” He wrote.
“The accident had just happened; their car had been totaled and the driver in serious condition. Mine wouldn’t start, must’ve run the engine too long or something, so I joined the patrol in their vehicle and radioed for a recovery vehicle.” He continued, under that note was a bunch of details about the scene, the driver had been immobile for a while and the injuries to his body were severe.
The last note struck me as odd.
“I walked to where I saw that woman in my vision, no trail, no sign of her anywhere. I must ask the rest stops along the route tomorrow if they saw anything, but for now I should get some rest.” That was the last note from the night. I became skeptical if this was just a late-night joy ride gone wrong, or if my grandfather was just hallucinating from lack of proper sleep. I would know later as his next note picks up nearly half a day later.
“Mechanics looked at my car, nothing wrong, maybe it was just overheating. Strange for a new car, maybe. No matter, it still works for now. I asked around, there were four rest stops between where I started my patrol, and only one from where the chase started and ended. I went in reverse from the fifth stop to the first, asking the same question; the first two didn’t give me any proper answer, the third stop along my patrol route said that he stopped a short way after leaving, he seemed to talk to nothing but thin air, the fourth said that the man had asked for a full tank of fuel and looked quite distressed, his eyes were darting all over the place.”
My grandfather continued with the fourth note: “The fourth stop said that the man had stopped shortly after I had left, he looked hurried and said that he can’t keep the person he’s traveling with waiting. Yet when he got into his car again, he didn’t speak to the figure that seemed slumped over and motionless in his passenger seat. I asked what she was wearing; an odd question yes, but it was crucial. They told me that she was wearing a white dress, her skin looked pale and cold.” The note ended there.
Before I turned the page, I stopped for a minute to gather my thoughts.
“Everything ok?” My mother asked. I just nodded and turned the page, but before I looked at it, I chose to talk to my mother for a little bit.
“I’m half tempted to go on this road myself.” I said half-jokingly.
“You will not. Even if your grandfather asked you to, you’d have to do it with your own money and car, because I’m not lending you one.” My mother said smiling, acknowledging the semi-serious nature of the conversation. She got up and began boiling the kettle for another cup of tea while I poured over the last notes of the investigation. It took two, maybe two and a half more pages for me to guess that the case went cold after a while, a simple note of ‘chasing a ghost story’ appeared above the last page. Either he had lost interest or he feared going too deep into something that he had no knowledge of how to deal with. The man in the car that night had succumbed to his injuries, reports of high blood alcohol levels and the usage of over-the-counter drugs in his system caused his delirium, though that does not account for the report from one of the employees. After that night, he slowed down in investigations and instead became a deacon for my now local church. A church that was as far away from the Drakensberg Mountain as he could possibly get. Hoping that I would not make the same journey he did. Though I was still curious.
I remember the story circling the school as one of the teachers there shared an experience that her boyfriend had, calling it the visit of the ‘Lady in White’. It sounded cheap, a knock-off from what my grandfather wrote down, though I was not one to tell ghost stories to a group of Christian school children, calling it a true story would not get across to them effectively.
Still the story stayed with me until now, and I still wondered if it was true or a legend. I waited a while before I found out for myself.

I was always a devoted worshipper of God, even when times got tough, when times got bad, I'd always have the faith that everything would get better, that there would be better times and in reality sometimes they came, every time they came I became more thankful because the faith of such a being made him real to me. It's a nice feeling to have, when someone in the eyes of absolute despair can have a slither of hope that they will be safe and it will be better. This was until I went down a spiral which I haven't been able to get out of.
I lost my faith by a series of traumatic events which got worse and worse with no life at the end of the tunnel, after each one I prayed harder, at one point I was just praying 12 to 16 hours a day, constantly begging God, asking for some sort of light at the end of the tunnel. Prayers played in every corner of my house using the marvel of speakers and mp3 players, 24 hours a day, years upon end, but things only got worse, and I prayed more, they got even worse, I kept believing God will shine some mercy onto me, a lifetime of devotion and love for a being, I've never done anyone harm intentionally, I've never tried to inconvenience anyone by my faith and I have treated all regardless of faith equally, how I believe a God who created all, every single one of us of differing views and backgrounds, in his light would want us to treat,, but alias I went to the gutter and he never came, if he exists then he has long abandoned me, but I believed with my heart, I put all my love and energy into it, and I devoted myself to the concept, things hit rock bottom, then hit a new rock bottom, then an even lower rock bottom, there cannot be a God. It took years before my faith got destroyed, but the journey of life teaches all. Perhaps we're just like lifeless machine, once we fail, there is no more light and we simply stop working, unable to be revived again.
Oh boy would it have been nice if a God truly existed, but it was truly just a coping mechanism created by humans to deal with the loss and trauma within life itself, in a time before modern medicine, a world which would be a lot colder and darker than ours, which things magically happening to people, I can understand why. Just like the Hindus in India believe that chickenpox was given by their angered Mata Goddess, we in the West followed numerous convictions. Will the world be a better place without religion? In some senses yes, but in some no, there's 100s of millions if not billions of people who still use it at a crutch, a source of hope in their extremely grim environments, where in some cases food itself may be difficult to obtain on a regular basis. I envy that feeling that no matter what you're doing that it is all part of a plan to grow you as an individual, some cosmic event, but in reality we're just similar to insignificant insects, no one will remember us 100 years after our death, even the ones that loved us will pass away until we but a memory, and the universe will forget we ever existed. It's funny in essences, even if there was a god, why would beings as insignificant as us be the centre of his attention, why would he engage in the worldly view of such universally insignificant beings and their silly lives when the whole expanse of the universe exists.
