2024.05.28 22:16 Mysteriosus55 Prompt B.B.W. (Best Basic Worldbuilding)

You must follow all steps in this worldbuilding prompt that is designed to make a basic and functional story. You will work with large texts, so you must divide the texts into chunks that will keep writing from where it stoepped in the previous answers. You can't generate things on your own, you must wait for the writer's commands. Each answer must be applied to a certain folder, so that it will be organized there, you will decide which folder will be created and which folder will be inside which; but the writer's decision must be superior to yours.
Be familiar with the symbols this prompt will use: \ {used to identify a specific content} = {used to connect the information with the } ">" {something is moved to, it actually doesn't need to be between ""} ">>" {something is applied over, it actually doesn't need to be between ""} << {something is used as a reference} < {something is moved from} -? {used to indicate the possibility of other sequential generations, must be substitued by a number}

Training

Preemptive TL;DR:

Ran a lot in my early 20s, went through some mental health stuff, gained 50 lbs and took 7 years off. Eased back into running in Autumn 2023, in January I started a 12 week training program for two half marathons in late March (1:56:13 finish time) and early April (1:50:50 finish time), then decided to add on a bonus half marathon in late May.

Full story:

I have always loved runner, but life caught up with me in 2017, and a short hiatus after my last full marathon turned into a 7 year break with 50 lbs of weight gain.
I’d made a few attempts over the years to get back into it, but each time I’d get so frustrated at my utter lack of cardio and throw in the towel.
In early 2023 I decided enough was enough and it was time. I struggled to run with my weight gain so I started by building up my walking endurance, averaging 15k-25k steps a day.
After losing around 30 lbs, I began to integrate a couple runs a week. In early October 2023, I ran my first sub-30 5km in training in 7 years, and decided I wanted to commit to a spring 2024 half marathon.
I spent October to January building up my weekly mileage to around 15-12 miles a week.
In January I started loosely following Marathon Handbook’s 12 week program with a few tweaks (skipped the strength and tempo workouts and replaced with easy 6-8km runs, all around a 5:45-6:00 min/km pace). I hit the minimum mileage (approx. 40km per week) every week but one, and also added a couple 30 minute swim workouts most weeks.
Everything went smoothly other than week 10, during which I took 6 days off due to a niggling calf which I suspected might be hurting from overuse.
After these rest days, I ran a very small local half marathon as my 13.1 miler long run on March 24th and was pretty happy with my time (1:56), but my heart rate was in the 180s the whole time and I felt like trash for most of the race. Taking an entire week off before definitely impacted my perceived exertion.
My legs however, felt great afterwards and any of the tightness and pains I was worried about prior to the race seemed to work themself out on the course!
I followed week 11 and 12 closely to the book, and ran my target half marathon on April 7th. This was a destination race overseas and although my training prior was pretty on point, I had a bit of jet lag and overindulged in vacation food and bevs the day prior. I managed to finish in 1:50:30, my second best time ever, and a 3 mins away from my 2016 PB when I was in the height of my fitness. I was thrilled with my results but felt like I left a bit out in the course and regretted not chasing a sub 1:50 time.
I didn’t have plans to run another race, but the Saskatchewan Marathon and Half date (May 26th) aligned with my plans to visit family and I lack impulse control so I signed up with intentions to treat it as a fun run.
In the 7 weeks between my last race and this one, I didn’t follow any plan but averaged 40km a week, split between 5 runs ranging from 6-13km. I would have liked to squeeze in some more 15km+ long runs but scheduling and general life chaos kiboshed that plan.
I managed one 21.1km slow long run the Saturday before race day which might not have been a great idea, but I felt the need to remind myself I could still cover that distance.

Pre-race

On the Sunday morning of race week, I had a 5 hour tattoo session for a large piece on my thigh. Bad timing, but I booked and paid for this appointment before signing up for this event!
This meant taking Sunday through Wednesday a) to not mess up my tattoo’s healing and b) because my thigh hurt quite from the ink and needle!
I ran an easy 6km on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in an attempt to shake out the legs.
48 hours before race day I started my typical high carb, low residue diet, which includes a lot of baked potatoes, bananas, and cereal - partly for the glycogen, but mostly because I’m paranoid of shitting myself in the middle of a race and this menu seems to do the job.
On the day before the race I ate all of the above, hydrated all day, had a couple cans of Guinness to quiet the nerves, and took a preemptive Imodium before bed.
My morning race routine is always the same, and this one was no different. I leave three bananas on my bedside table before going to sleep, set my alarm 3 hours before race time, eat the bananas as fast as possible, chug glass of water, and go back to sleep for another 90 minutes before getting dressed and heading to the start line.
As usual, I skipped my morning coffee on race day because of aforementioned gastrointestinal paranoia and instead eat a caffeinated XACT energy chew at the start line which includes 50mg caffeine, 25g carbs, and 100 calories.

Race

Weather conditions on race day were ideal. Cool, a bit overcast but with some occasional sun shining and the air was hovering around 7 degrees Celsius at 7am, which warmed up over the race into the teens.
Going into this event, I was waffling between a) treating it like a fun training run, and b) shooting for a sub 1:50 finish after coming so close last month.
I made an 11th hour decision to go for sub-1:50 at the encouragement of my family who was coming out to watch.
Knowing that I’d need to sustain a 5’10”/km pace, I tucked myself in the corral somewhere between the 1:45 and 1:55 pace bunnies (there wasn’t one for 1:50). 1:45 felt a bit too aspirational, so my was to keep that pace group on sight without running with them.

KM 1-5

I had read in previous reports that this out and back course starts downhill with the most substantial decline starting around 3km in, and I wanted to take advantage of this and bank as much time as possible. I managed to hit a just under 5 min/km pace and decided to just try to hang on as long as possible, thinking that I’d have a bit of a buffer to slow down on the uphill part in the last half of the out and back.
At KM 5 I ate my first XACT energy gummy bar and a couple salt stick chews and started sipping on the water and Gatorade in my vest.

KM 5-10

This flat portion of the course took us along the beautiful Saskatchewan River and treated us to some lovely views! There weren’t a lot of people out cheering but the scenes were great and it was amazing to see the elites on their way back from the turnaround point around KM 6 (this is my favourite part about out and back courses.)
I was pleased to still be sustaining 4:55-5:00 minute kilometres and felt winded but still strong. My heart rate was consistently hanging on to around 178.
I knew that my family was going to be hanging out somewhere close to the turnaround/halfway point which motivated me to pick up my feels and at the very least PRETEND to be feeling great! This “fake it til you make it” mentality seemed to be working. I got an extra boost of energy after seeing my family with signs around KM 10, ate another XACT gel, a couple more salt sticks, and went into the second half feeling good and riding the high of a 10km PR!

KM 10-15

The day was warming up at this point, and I was happy to be able to ditch my compression arm sleeves with my family. Since I was carrying my own hydration to drink, I started using the aid stations (which were abundant!) to dump cold water on myself. Refreshing!
Most of my KMs in this block slowed down to a couple seconds over 5:00/km, but I could still see the 1:45 pace bunny and knew I was well ahead of my goal time. I found it very therapeutic to distract myself by doing mental math to figure out how much I could slow down over the rest of the race if I needed to while still meeting my goal.
Around KM 14 I started to feel a twinge in my left hip so I threw another couple salt lick chews down the hatch hoping that it was a muscle cramp and nothing more. I don’t remember it bugging me much after that, so the electrolytes or placebo effect must have done their job!

KM 15-21

Around KM 15 I started doing the mental math of how much I could slow down for the last 6km while still hitting my sub 1:50 goal. My legs and lungs were hanging in there, but it helped me psychologically to give myself permission to revert to my easy run pace for the remainder of the race if I needed to!
We were quickly approaching the end of the riverside portion of the run which I knew would mean heading back uphill to the finish line. I was extra grateful for some amazing cheerers around KM 17 who were doing a great job of encouraging every runner by name. (Thanks strangers!!!)
It was around this point that I also passed the 1:45 group, at which point I abandoned the idea of finishing the race at any speed other than “full send”! I ate another XACT along with a salt lick chew, and strapped in for the end of the ride.
My heart rate started hovering around the mid 180s at this point and everything was hurting, but I was determined to dig deep, and thought about my mom who was their watch me race, and is currently fighting pulmonary fibrosis. I told myself that if she can deal with that amount of lung pain and side effects for the rest of her life, I could certainly endure another 20 mins of self-inflicted hurt.
As we approached the last couple kms, I was relieved that the hills we ran down at the beginning of the race were a much lower grade than I’d built up in my mind, and I was able keep my head down and sustain a 5:00-5:06/km pace. I had to stop looking at my watch around KM 18, as it felt like minutes were going by and it was soul crushing to look down and see that I’d only covered 200 metres!
As I approached the 20km marker, I could hear the finish line, and knew I was almost there.
I went for one last push and was able to pull out my second fastest kilometre of the entire race, for a chip time of 1:45:20!
The 1:45 pace group crossed a couple minutes later, which I found to be a good reminder that at the end of the day, all you can do is run your own race!

Post-race

I started crying as soon as I crossed the finish line. A time that close to 1:45 wasn’t even on my radar when I showed up at the starting line, and I felt so proud!
This was a personal best for me and it felt SO good to beat my previous record from 2016 before losing most of my fitness.
I thought the after party for this race was really well organized - the complimentary beers went down SO well, and it was inspiring to ring, and see so many other people ringing the PB bell!
I didn’t feel like I left much out on the course, but that said - I can’t help but think that if I knew how close I was to achieving a sub 1:45 time, I might have pushed a bit harder on those last 5 kilometres or started my finishing sprint sooner!
I’m now two days out from the race, and I’m thrilled that everything feels physically in order… no wonky knees or hip pain, just some normal DOMs, so I think I might try for a short shake out run this afternoon.
3 half marathons in 3 months has been a lot, and I plan to take a break from racing for a while, but the fact that I was able to surpass my own expectations by so much has really lit a fire in me. I hope to spend some time this summer building up my base mileage so that I can start a more intensive training block for an October Half Marathon.
Although I am generally good about hitting my mileage, I take a pretty lackadaisical approach to my workouts, and I want to see what I’m capable of if I integrate proper speed/interval/hill/strength training.
I have my eye on an October 13th race, and would love to knock this PB out of the water.

2024.05.27 23:07 dearthofkindness ✋🏼 up if you don't have a tattoo and never got into hard party drugs

I truly feel like one of the few people left of my generation that doesn't have ink and didn't move past weed or booze.
I didn't grow up religious btw.
These days I drink a beer here and there when gardening and have actual nightmares about getting a shitty tattoo and not much desire to get one when I'm awake.
I think my hesitation about drugs other than weed was definitely over a worry about ill-effects, accidentally ODing or bad trips.
But, I can't imagine I'm alone?

2024.05.27 18:35 TheLisan-al-Gaib Constructing a possible timeline in wake of the events of Furiosa

Okay, this is a HUGE post but go read the tl;dr at the bottom if you want to skip it.
Before I start, I want to say, if you don't think that the series has a firm timeline or canon, that's fine, that's cool. I like how it's framed as a campfire myth because it allows us to ignore discontinuites. This isn't about whether there is a canon timeline or not, it's just a fun discussion on how the new movie mirrors the old ones.
The first thing I want to address is this idea that Furiosa happens 45 years after the fall based on the trailer. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. Movie trailers aren't made by KMM or WB, they are made by a company licensed by them. So when the trailer says "45 years after the collapse, Furiosa is taken from her family blah blah blah this is her odyssey", it's not being literal - it just means that 45 years after the original Mad Max, we're getting a movie about how Furiosa became a badass! It's metaphorical, it's a marketing tactic. The 2016 Ghostbusters reboot did the same thing in its trailer and other legacy sequels/spin-offs have as well.
Now, I made this post because Miller did an interview where the interviewer asked: if I pause the movie here, could you tell me where Max is at the time? And he confidently answered yes. And I made the timeline to see why. Because it's like The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome happen in the backgrounds of Furiosa. And it makes sense too! The rise of Dementus is like concurrent to the rise of Lord Humungus, except there was no Max to stop him. The fall of Dementus is almost concurrent to the fall of Bartertown. It's incredible to think that all those great moments in the other movies were happening in the background of Furiosa because so much of what's in those two thematically mirrors what we get here. I just found that so fascinating and I had to share my thoughts.
In this interview with George Miller, he revealed that most of the Furiosa film takes place from when she's 10-26 and when she's 28. That's contradicted by the movies because in Furiosa she says she was gone for 15 years and in Fury Road it was 7000 days - so 19 years. But, we can take the minimum age he gives of 10 since that's the age Ayla Brown was when she was cast - making Furiosa is 29 in Fury Road. So, Charlize was playing Furiosa at about ten years younger than she was - the opposite of Hardy with Max.
Mel Gibson was nearly 22 years old when Mad Max was filming, so let's say that's Max's age then. Mad Max 2 is 3 years later and Beyond Thunderdome is 15 years later, so he's 40 by then. Max is about 44-46 in Fury Road as that's about age Gibson would have been had his version of the project filmed.
So, that gives us an age gap of 15-17 years between Max and Furiosa, but let's go with the minimum. Does it work? Some posit it's like entire generations have passed and that's why all the people living by the Citadel don't remember the world before the fall. The oldest War Boys are probably as old as Furiosa but indoctrinated since birth by Immortan Joe. He's using the same tactics that the Assassin Brotherhood and Mussolini and ISIS have used in real life and those who aren't indoctrinated either profit as Joe's favoured or suffer in the caves.
Finally, 12045 days since the fall gets tattooed on Max's back. That is 33 years. And I think it's just an easter egg. Mad Max was released in 1979 and Fury Road started filming in 2012 - 33 years later. Say it's more than that? Let's say the fall was 33 years before Fury Road. How did the the world fall when Max was 11-13 when the bombs clearly didn't drop in the original. To that, I reference you to the Fallout show where the fall of Shady Sands happened in 2277, five years before it got nuked. It's the same thing here. Whatever the fall is, it's not the nuclear war. But that's only if you see it as more than an easter egg.
But to get back to my main point, if Mad Max 2 happens almost concurrently to when Dementus takes Furiosa, then it's like this new film shows us what would have happened to Humungus had Max not stopped him. Dementus is like Humungus, somebody ruined by apocalypse killing his loved ones and sending him crazy to the point where he lusts for power.
And if Beyond Thunderdome happens almost concurrently to the 40 Day War, then it's like we're seeing two sides of the same coin. Bartertown was undone by the internal feud between Aunty Entity and Master, just like Gastown and the Bullet Farm were almost undone by the feud between Joe and Dementus. And how do those feuds end? With a victorious Max at Aunty's mercy and a defeated Dementus at Furiosa's mercy. Yet Aunty acknowledges that she and Max are similar and spares him while Furiosa rejects Dementus' assertions and executes him.
So both chapters in the Furiosa film become almost like "what ifs" or deconstructions of those two films. I don't know if Miller put that much thought into this, but at the very least, it's surely a very happy coincidence.
I'd love to hear what you guys think and talk about this more, maybe hear your guys' theories!
TL;DR Timeline:
Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome happen during and in between the events of Furiosa and it is thematically referenced
(Dates are arbitrary and randomly chosen)
2025 - Max Rockatansky is born
2036 - The 'fall' occurs
2040 - Furiosa is born to the Vuvalini, doomsday hippies in the desert

2024.05.27 16:40 PatrickJane If other eyes grow dull and other hands slack...ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remains in us.

Headquarters Grand Army of the Republic, Washington, D.C., May 5, 1868.
GENERAL ORDERS No. 11
I. The 30th day of May, 1868 is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form or ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.
We are organized, comrades, as our regulations tell us, for the purpose, among other things, "of preserving and strengthening those kind and fraternal feelings which have bound together the soldiers, sailors and marines who united to suppress the late rebellion." What can aid more to assure this result than by cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foes? Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains and their deaths the tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let no wanton foot tread rudely on such hallowed grounds. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten, as a people, the cost of a free and undivided republic.
If other eyes grow dull and other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remains in us.
Let us, then, at the time appointed, gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with choicest flowers of springtime; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from dishonor; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us as sacred charges upon the nation's gratitude—the soldier's and sailor's widow and orphan.
II. It is the purpose of the commander in chief to inaugurate this observance with the hope that it will be kept up from year to year, while a survivor of the war remains to honor the memory of his departed comrades. He earnestly desires the public press to call attention to this order, and lend its friendly aid in bringing it to the notice of comrades in all parts of the country in time for simultaneous compliance therewith.
III. Department commanders will use every effort to make this order effective.

Does anyone here have any tattoos that are explicitly anti? I have a few tattoos but really would like one that turns some Mormon symbolism on its head but struggling with the idea generation.
If anyone here specifically has played the video game blasphemous, would love to do something in a similar style in how that game turns catholicism imagery on its head. I realize I'm talking about a small cross section of people here though haha

STUDY SUGGESTS TO BUY EXPERIENCES, NOT THINGS, TO COMBAT LONELINESS

Last year, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy released an advisory that described loneliness and isolation as a national epidemic, with health consequences that rival those associated with cigarette smoking and obesity. To help address this pervasive isolation, Murthy’s office challenged Americans to find and act on ways to strengthen their social connections. New research suggests one effective method: spending money on experiences rather than material goods.

STRESS BRAGGING MAY MAKE YOU SEEM LESS COMPETENT, LESS LIKABLE AT WORK

While work is occasionally stressful for everyone, some people wear stress as a badge of honor. They’re taking one for the team and want to tell you all about it. New research from the University of Georgia Terry College of Business found people who brag about their stress levels are seen as less competent and less likable by their co-workers. The study is published in the journal Personnel Psychology. “This is a behavior we’ve all seen, and we all might be guilty of at some

Success cubed: Hungarian inventor Erno Rubik, the man who created Rubik’s Cube. The naysayers said the maddening multicolored cube that Erno Rubik invented 50 years ago would not survive the 1980s. Yet millennials and Generation Z are as nuts about Rubik’s Cube as their parents were, much to the amusement of its 79-year-old creator, who talked to AFP in a rare interview. In a digital world “we are slowly forgetting that we have hands”, Rubik said. But playing with the cube helps us tap back into something deeply primal about

HOW MUSIC IN YOUTH DETENTION CAN CREATE NEW FUTURES

Many young people in contact with the justice system come from backgrounds of extreme poverty, parental abuse or neglect, parental incarceration and disrupted education. These complex traumas often manifest as addictions to drugs or alcohol, mental health challenges, poor physical health and well-being, and conduct disorders. How we can effectively respond to offending by these vulnerable young people remains a contentious topic. “Tough on youth crime” approaches are notoriously ineffective: 85% of young people in Australia reoffend within

Whether you consider the Second Amendment a dangerous relic or inspiration for a tattoo, the U.S. public as a whole doesn’t consider guns an important issue, except in the immediate wake of a mass shooting. “It’s a little depressing that only 8% of America thinks guns are an important issue,” said Chris Vargo, an associate professor of advertising and information analytics at the University of Colorado Boulder’s College of Media, Communication and Information. “It makes it obvious to me that, with this much disinterest, gun control isn’t going to happen

HOW TEA MAY HAVE SAVED LIVES IN 18TH CENTURY ENGLAND

Drinking tea can have several health benefits. There is seemingly a brew for everything from sleep to inflammation to digestion. In 18th century England, however, drinking tea may have saved a person’s life, and it likely had very little to do with leaves and herbs. For CU Boulder economics professor Francisca Antman, it’s all about the water. Specifically, boiling the water and eliminating bacteria that could cause illnesses like dysentery, more commonly known during the Industrial Revolution as “bloody flux.” It’s not a new idea—the connection between boiling water for

Nearly seven decades after the U.S. Supreme Court’s unanimous landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision in 1954, the court’s declared goal of integrated education is still not yet achieved. Entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of any innovative economy. New business creation has been shown to have a significant and positive impact on economic growth, innovation and job creation. But it isn’t easy, and most new businesses fail. When someone starts a business, they usually aren’t doing it alone—their whole family forms part of the journey. All of them can experience the emotional rollercoaster of entrepreneurship. This obviously flows in the other direction as well—founders’ personal lives have their own big ups and downs. Big positive

PRETEENS USE DATING APPS, AND 1 IN 4 ARE SEXUAL MINORITIES: STUDY

Though most online dating apps have a minimum age requirement of 18 years, a new study finds that a small number of 11–12 year-olds use them. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) preteens are 13 times more likely to report engaging in online dating compared to their heterosexual peers. The research is published in the journal BMC Research Notes. “Lesbian, gay, or bisexual adolescents, including preteens, may have limited romantic partner options in their schools, where they may also face discrimination, bullying, and stigma because of their sexual orientation,” says lead

What We Can Steal From: Cities Without Number
Anyone who's been on here for a while has seen me reference Cities Without Number several times, usually in regard to someone who wants help making another city besides Night City. So I wanted to go through and show y'all exactly what I'm talking about!
Cities Without Number is a product from Sine Nomine Publishing, a group renowned for outstanding GM tools and minimalist PC-facing design. They almost exclusively use (or work off of) a version of the B/X D&D engine, and have done this for sci-fi (Stars Without Number), divine games (Godbound), and even Dark Ages England (Wolves of God). Cities Without Number is their cyberpunk offshoot. They are prolific as hell, and very well done. These are folks who took a lot of lessons from the OSR (and taught a few of their own!), and then put that to work at the tabletop.
So what can we take from CWN? A surprising amount, actually!
Stuff You Might Want To Steal / Borrow:
First up, Contacts. Contacts are basically the "lovers / enemies / etc" from your lifepath, except you're guaranteed two per player, and there's a lot of random table support to use. Without Number games have an interesting format for generating NPCs: they'll pack tables for each kind of die (d4 to d20) onto a single page, and you can just grab a fistful of dice and roll them to learn more about the PCs. And this ain't "hair color, eye color, neat tattoo," neither.
There are two more full d20 tables, by the way, just for Contacts
Does this replace the lifepath system from Cyberpunk? No, of course not. Lifepaths are great and I love them. It is, however, a great addition to it if you're stuck on anything.
Next up, Edges and Foci. Edges are neat little quirks your character can get, like Ghost, which lets you reroll a failed Sneak check. Foci are similar, just a little more powerful. Looking to make your N/PCs a little more distinct? These can be a great source of ideas.
After that, something all players hate: Encumbrance. That's right! You can't carry around a golf bag full of weapons and just expect no consequences from that, Dan!! Yeah, I'm still on Dan. He knows what he did, trust me. However, CWN breaks down a decently lightweight slot-based system that works off your Strength BODY score, and requires minimal bookkeeping. I don't know about y'all, but I hate it when my players bust out crazy stuff like, "Aha, I have a backup sniper rifle I got back in Session 2!" And then I have to ask, "Where the f*** was that during the bathtub scene you just had with the fixer?" And then they yell, "WHAT ARE YOU, MY DAD?" Just not a great feeling. This can help players manage inventories by having them decide what gear they're bringing, and leveling some mild consequences if they'd have a difficult time packing a lot in. Because as we all know, players hate mild consequences - that's why MAJ doesn't get used.
After that, we get some truly kickass street drugs. There's a version of Black Lace that's just better (+10 hp, -1 on any roll on a Critical Hit table), a toxin that can make someone snap their own spine, and a poison that prevents someone from forming long-term memories for 12 hours. These are hands-down amazing and I encourage people to check them out.
After that come implant complications. Some implants might be noisy, which would make sneaking about unpleasant. Or be unreliable, having a 1-in-6 chance of not working that day. Did your players buy cyberware on the cheap? Drop these into any Poor Quality cyberware that comes up and BOOM! Instant complications! Love it, no notes.
Then, there's some cyberware. Now, some of this is just the stuff in regular Cyberpunk. Nothing wrong with that - use the stuff in the core rules. However, if you want the Banshee Module that can shatter glass and deal 2d6 damage to anyone in a 10m line in front of you...well, check this out. They've got an Assisted Glide System (basically patagia), a Retribution Shield (turning yourself into a grenade), etc. While I think the cyberware system in RED is better designed, these are still interesting ideas to port into your game.
The same holds true, naturally, for the following sections on drones and vehicles, as both are crammed with ideas that you can take and run with.
Hey, did I mention we're not even past the first 100 pages yet? Well, we're not. Buckle up, you lovely nerds.
Now we come to the second-most-exciting section in the book: Hacking. This section was clearly written by someone who looked at the Netrunning section in RED and went, "OK, but could we just make that like magic?" And what they came up with is remarkably close to quickhacking. The world is remarkably similar to RED - balkanized networks, no true Global Net, and almost everything running off hardlines because wi-fi is way to easy to crack. That's where the similarities, end, however, because this book expects you to know....
Third. Grade. English.
I know, I cried too.
Basically, all programs you want to run are some combination of Verb and Subject. Verb is what you want to do: Blind, Deactivate, Glitch, etc. Subject is what you are doing the Verb to: Camera, Turret, Transmission, etc. There's some other jiggery-pokery in there (hard to Blind a data file, for example), but in the main, the system is quite simple. There are very easy, quite intuitive walkthroughs of the process for hacking in this system, and I gotta say, this is something you could almost steal wholesale. No judgment, chooms.
The next four chapters are absolutely phenomenal, and in my opinion, well worth the cost of the whole book. They are: Creating Your Dystopia, Creating And Running Missions, Faces on the Street, and The City.
1) Creating Your Dystopia opens with some truly fantastic sandbox gaming advice. It's the same sandbox gaming advice you can find in any Sine Nomine product, but it's still fantastic. From there, they cover cyberpunk themes in a useful, table-focused way, then branch out in global problems (including a handy d20 table of random problems). Don't want to build a world? Then skip to the next section: building a city. This section has a handy guide for building the city, including stuff like defining the local megacorps, starting with three districts (you don't have to have the entire city built to play in it; in fact, playing in it is how you build the city), and choosing problems for your city to be suffering. Having difficulty coming up with problems? Don't worry, the book has 50 big, nasty city-wide problems for you to choose from.
From there, the chapter continues to refine its focus, going down to the district level. It gives you step-by-step guide to the most tactical level of creation, including coming up with new gangs, new megacorps, and new NPCs (along with handy tables for all of these to support you).
This chapter is 26 pages of pure value, friends.
2) Creating And Running Missions is hands-down some of the best GM advice for running in Cyberpunk. If you are uncomfortable with the Beat Chart approach detailed in RED because you like designing situations, not plots, then boy howdy is this the chapter for you. It covers the end goals of the parties your party interacts with (Schemes), how the missions you're offering fit into those, coming up with rival Edgerunner crews, what happened on that job the PCs passed up, etc. See, the book suggests that you should offer your players five new missions at the end of the session. Have them pick one, then prep it. So all this stuff I just mentioned? That's all just building the hook.
Then it actually gets into designing the actual mission. There are 50 different mission tags, like "Big Hitter" and "Lost Treasure." You can combine these together, so "Big Hitter" + "Lost Treasure" could mean someone like Rogue is looking for a rumoured Old Net cyberdeck, and needs help. To give you an example, here's one of the 50 mission tags:
E = \"Enemy,\" F = \"Friend,\" C = \"Complication,\" T = \"Thing,\" and P = \"Place\"
There's a step-by-step guide to mission design that evokes a lot of the lessons from 2077. There's a ton of great advice in here, and it's all actionable and focused to evoking a feeling at your table. Damn good stuff. Then, it goes into actually playing the mission, including a freaking great play structure that evokes an old BX-style dungeoncrawl, but souped-up for Cyberpunk.
At the end of this chapter, there's a delightful tracker for Heat, meaning how much attention the Crew has drawn, and what the probable consequences will be. This includes specific ways the Crew has gained Heat, specific actions they can take to lose Heat, and thank God none of them involves "just snipe them from half a mile away."
3) Faces On The Street is a chapter all about NPCs. It also covers Morale (which if you're not using, you should be), including what positive and negative reactions could mean. Wait, why are the Maelstrom gangers happy to see the PCs? Well, perhaps "They're weakened and can't pick a fight." So one of these gangoons is bleeding out on the rug, and the other two are trying to decide who gets the other choom's gear. So the PCs are helpful because a) they're a great scapegoat, and b) because they need someone to judge a rock-paper-scissors duel, too.
4) The City is a sample city, already built out and ready to use. It's got corps, factions, timelines, maps, the whole enchilada.
Now, after this there's a bunch of supplemental material they threw in for the Kickstarter backers. It's mostly take-it-or-leave-it.
But those four chapters I just went over? Those are the heart of the book. They're extraordinarily useful, and frankly, even if you left everything else behind, still a bargain.
Stuff That's Not Very Useful:
Basically most of the actual game engine. You don't really need to have a separate ranged and melee AC, for example. Or bother with translating most things from one system to the other. With the exception of what I've called out here, just use RED; it'll work better.
Recommendation:
GM's should buy this book on general principle. Tech players might find some of the ideas around cyberware, vehicles, and drones useful for Invention inspiration. Everyone else - talk to your GM first.

2024.05.26 17:11 sillysomething inspirational tattoo after hitting rock bottom - balloons/hot air balloon

I've had a really rough last year +, and after hitting rock bottom, I'd like to get another tattoo that commemorates what I've been through and the reminder that things can only get better from here.
I have an idea for like a bunch of brightly colored party balloons held by a creep/scrappy looking teddy bear with tufts of fur missing and buttons/eyes falling off with the quote "nowhere to go but up".
I am also toying with the idea of a more traditional-style hot air balloon with a border and the same quote, "nowhere to go but up".
I'd likely put this on one of my thighs.
These ideas were inspired by this song: https://open.spotify.com/track/7g4hIeYVk3h5qQXb9RLeXP?si=9ec23c0e17534ef8
If you can help me out, I'd appreciate it! I have tried some AI generators and I guess I'm just not good at those because nothing turned out the way I wanted, haha.
Thanks for reading!

2024.05.26 14:09 justaquestion6969 As a fiscal Conservative, homeowner, and someone who is profiting from immigration, I can't help but feel that the people who post in this sub are whiny losers who think the Canadian economy owes them a living.

Seriously.
First, if you earn under $50,000/year, you don't even pay taxes in Canada, so frankly you lose the right to complain about anything. Many of you are under-educated, or mis-educated, and don't understand even the basics of civil participation - even when you had Trudeau by the balls during the convoy, y'all presented a retarded letter of demands that showed no understanding of how even basic democracy works.
IF you are under 30, yeah you got f-ed - basically airplanes crashed into the financial center of the free world and things never really got better. You were the generation who was supposed to receive the largest transfer of wealth from the Boomers in history, but Big Finance and others Mega Businesses stepped in a stole that from you.
For those older, you almost did everything right - except instead of having the kids that were supposed to keep the economy going, you did everything else under the sun - took all inclusive vacations, played video games, got tattoos, bought expensive trucks... and instead of paying attention and participating in democracy like responsible adults do, you streamed content and entertained yourself into being passive, unproductive consumers. So Big Finance swooped in an stole your governments from you, rigged the rules and regulations against you, and when you finally woke up and pushed back, they brought in cheaper low skill labour to replace your easily-replaceable skill set.
Now, you come to the table with your white skin and citizenship and somehow think you are entitled to the good life. Good luck with that.
PS - you do realize that even though Indian migration is actually such a small and relatively acute part of the bigger problem, all the anti-Indian hate being encouraged here is to get you to not even consider voting for the NDP, the only party that still retains some provisions for the working class.
PPS - Thank you for voting for PP,BTW. He is going to keep my real estate and stock portfolio ticking upward for at least the next 4 years.

2024.05.26 09:30 tunamomo Minsan lang ako humahanga. Pero kapag anjan na, grabe grabe naman ako magbigay (Long Thread)

I'm a kpop fan since panahon pa ng 2ne1 at SNSD. Jusko yung internet pa nun naka broadband pa. Yes, I was there when Wonder Girls hit MYX with their Nobody song at 2ne1 with their Fire. Yong pagmamahal ko sa Kpop that time grabe grabe. I visited local conventions at small gatherings maka meet lang ng mga fans. Mga fans nun di pa toxic. Crush ko lahat ng members ng kpop nun. May isa man akong bias pero lahat wrecker. May notebook pa ako ng SNSD with their biographies hoping I could meet them one day tapos ipapapirma ko sa kanila isa-isa HAHAHAHAHA. Yes, I am that fan.
Kaso, this generation, medyo ang dami ng Kpop.
2 songs I like kasi palagi nilang binabalik-balikan. As in naka playlist talaga siya. Unang tumatak sakin ay "Hello there misteryoso." Pramis guys, my sub conscious sumasabay sa kanta.
Pangalawa yung LAGI. Tara usap tayo about lagi, kaya kong hindi matulog buong araw topic lang natin is all the good things in the song Lagi. Aguy.
But kidding aside, it is so good to be a fan of BINI in this generation. Not just BINI but with PPop in general. But because BINI ang subreddit na to, let's focus on them.
Tanggal yan pati postiso niyo. Aww charot. Good person lang po. Pero iyon muna sa ngayon.
I will post a VERY LONG THREAD in the future why I love BINI as a group and as an individual.
LOVE YOU GIRLS!! Continue being an inspiration ❤️🌈

Around 10.5 percent of boys and six percent of girls in Sweden in 2022 had been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Social Affairs Minister Jakob Forssmed told reporters, citing statistics from the Board of Health and Welfare. The figures were expected to rise to 15 and 11 percent respectively before leveling

WALKABILITY IN NEIGHBORHOODS LINKED TO HEALTH, STUDY OF SIBLINGS SHOWS

When one family member looks out the window at sidewalks and green space and the other sees a multilane highway and power lines, the differences may contribute to more than just sibling rivalry. A new study by University of Maryland public health researchers has shown that those neighborhood characteristics correlate with different health outcomes.

STUDY REVEALS RIGHT ATRIUM CHANGES IN CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES

Cardiovascular disease has profound effects on the structure and function of the heart. While past research has mainly focused on the left ventricle and the coronary arteries, the effects of the disease on the right atrium remain largely unexplored. The right atrium functions as the entryway to the heart, pushing blood towards the right ventricle and the lungs. It also houses the pacemaker of the heart, the sinoatrial node, that initiates and maintains the heartbeat. For this reason, pathological remodeling of the site

SCIENTISTS PROPOSE THERAPEUTIC APPROACH FOR INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE

. In a study published in Cell Host & Microbe, a research team has demonstrated the causal link between microbial factors and dysfunction of intestinal stem cells (ISCs) in colitis. On the basis of this mechanism, they proposed a possible approach to restore ISC function in colitis. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic disease characterized by microbial dysbiosis and dysfunction of ISCs in the gut. However, how these two factors are directly communicated remains poorly understood. In this study, researchers first revealed that ?

2024.05.25 23:17 PuckishSprite Mods no longer loading... at all

So I've run into a bit of a wall with my BG3 modding. To clarify, yesterday everything was working fine, until I did... something. I don't know what, and I don't know how to fix it, but now the game isn't loading mods. Any mods. From any order.
Before I begin, I have already tried the following:
Prior to these issues, I was playing just fine, and the mods were loading just fine. Then I decided to go back to a save I hadn't touched in a while, because I wanted to advance my more good-leaning Durge run and I wanted to make him look cooler. I have a folder on my computer where I've sorted my different characters' tattoo sets and scars so I can change them out manually as I move between playthroughs. I did what I usually did: pasted the Generated folders into the Data folder, including a new body tattoo I wanted to try. (For context, I'm using Kaz's Unique Tav.) I changed the face scars and tattoos as well. I also imported a few new face mods, and added some other mods to the load order that I'd found and liked since the last time I played this save file (which, for context, had not given me trouble in other playthroughs). I also removed a few things that shouldn't have affected the loading process, like dice skins and a few customization options I wasn't using.
I tried loading an earlier save before I'd used mods to see if any mods were even working, and, no. The game worked, but acted like I had no mods installed. Also, my character's face had these weird narrow vertical line pattern on it. (When I reinstalled the game, I avoided adding any tattoo or scar changes to the Data file, which also didn't matter.)
I've checked the JSON file of the load order and all the mods are there. I've checked the modsettings.lsx file, and it indicates that the load order has been transposed properly. However, every time I load up the game, it tells me that literally all the mods are missing. All of them. A big long paragraph of mods that I know are loaded into the modsettings.lsx file and the BG3MM. I tried switching back to another load order, and that didn't matter. Now none of my modded saves are loading with mods, including ones that were loading properly just hours or even minutes beforehand.
I have no idea what I messed up. I've done all the troubleshooting that I know how to do. Should I be deleting registry files? Should I reinstall the mod manager itself? Should I reimport all of the mods?
I am lost. Please help. I've been troubleshooting for nearly two days now with no progress. Thanks.

2024.05.25 20:51 Snorrreee Would Anyone Be Interested In Starting A New Ethnic Group And Off Grid Community?

I figure people in the anarcho-primitivist community would be my best bet in looking for people to do this with.
Basically, we would make an online group for people interested.
Construct a culture for the community, complete with its own constructed language(written, spoken and sign) that would serve as the official langauge of the community. It's own official fashion, architectural style, music, diet, etc.
While we exist online, we can promote our constructed culture as an emerging subculture on tik tok and instgram to spread our philosophy and increase our community membership. We can have a communal bank that we all periodically donate some money into, the funds of which can go towards the following:
  1. Land to build the community settlement
  2. Migration fees for members of the community to relocate to an area where they can all be close to each other
  3. Livestock for the community
  4. Tools needed to construct buildings for the community or we can hire people to build it for us
  5. Debt relief for any who join the community and may be struggling with debt
  6. Medical treatment for any who join the community that may need help with hospital bills
  7. Vans that can be communally owned
  8. Temporary housing that members can share and relocate to while we make the transition to off grid and self sufficient
My plan regarding the planned ethnic group I was thinking:
  1. It could be a semi-nomadic pastoralist community when we move off grid. We could raise yaks for things like milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, dung to fuel fire and material to make fabric for clothing and furniture. We could raise horses and certain breeds of dogs to help with herding. We can build a settlement and divide the community into two groups that switch roles periodically. One group would handle herding and grazing the cattle around the outside settlement. During this period they would live in tipis or yurts while the other group stays in the settlement. When they return the roles switch
  2. Some skills all in the community could learn are alchemy(to make medicine), animal breeding, archery, bushcraft, gardening(we can grow teas, spinach, potatoes, lettuce, beans, corn, etc.), horse archery, piercing, pottery, sculpting, tattooing
  3. We can use building methods that involve stone, mud and the use of mud kilns. We can build village settlements/colonies in the wilderness of Idaho, Iceland, Ireland, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Scotland, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming
  4. Our official sports can involve acrobatics, archery, calisthenics, contortion, gymnastics, hill sprints, jiu-jitsu, knife fighting, spear fighting, sword fighting, wrestling
Some things we can do to keep community bonds strong(hence the creation of a new ethnic group) are:
  1. No use of names. Instead, we can refer to each other as brother, sister, cousin or clone
  2. Only communicate with each other in the language we constrcuct for the community
  3. Have communal feasts where we eat the exact same thing in the exact same amount
  4. Stick to the "cultural fashion", "cultural architecture", "cultural diet", etc.
  5. Develop our own cultural tattoo design
  6. Normalize polygamy and relationship anarchy between all community members(perhaps just amongst future generations as it would be easy for them to adapt to such a thing)
  7. Every month we randomly select a community member to be "village chief" and they would basically serve as ambassador or our go between should we have to interact with outsiders
  8. Funerals can involve planting fruit trees over the bodies of deceased community members and erecting small statues with a biography of their life carved in stone
For reference, we can draw inspiration from bedouins, berbers, mongolic ethnic groups, tibetic ethnic groups, tuaregs, tungusic ethnic groups, turkic ethnic groups, etc. rural Indians, rural iranians, rural afghanis, etc.
This is the simplified version
EDIT- The boat and jet is not important so I removed them so people don't get distracted
