I saw someone on here talk about how there wasn’t enough “diversity” on this sub. How it was full of geniuses going to Harvard, Stanford, etc. But let me tell you buddy, every story is definitely different.
My story starts with a kid who lived in a low income coastal town, growing up in an abusive home I learned quickly what I needed to prioritize to survive. Most of the time I was on the streets riding my skateboard all day, hanging out with the hippies downtown. I struggled a lot in school, wasn’t able to read or write until the 5th grade, constantly bullied, told to my face by teachers I wouldn’t even graduate high school at this rate. Looking back, I should’ve felt sheer panic as I was a million miles away from the place I needed to be academically like everyone else, but all I cared about was where my next meal would be.
Fast forward, I did in fact get to high school but not before I dropped out of the 6th grade and homeschooled myself until I was able to enroll at a local community college as a dual enrollment student. I worked full time to afford the basic necessities but I still came home to an abusive home. I would wake before 4am and I wouldn’t be back home until a quarter to midnight. Rinse and repeat for four years just so I could avoid the home I was in.
I graduated high school with a 3.8 college GPA, a love to read and write, and a keen interest in business. I pursued an all business school where I felt really lost, not getting outside support on how my college experience should be, but I kept my eye on what my future could be. My college was right down the street from Stanford University, where I met my partner (let’s call her Jennifer). When I first met Jennifer, I had no idea what Stanford was, she was a first gen college student as well where we both felt peace together in the madness. I can’t forget the first time I set foot on that campus. Full of PRIVILEGE, privilege, AND MORE PRIVILEGE! Yet, the ones with the most gratitude were the ones I related to the most, the first generation students who were a small minority at the University. My partner would tell me stories about how she got into early action at Stanford for her undergrad, where she got to visit and take a plane from SoCal to NorCal for the first time in her life with her mother. When they got there, they were invited to a “dinner” with the admissions and school admins + the other early admits. No other information was provided. When she showed up with her mother, it was a room full of white people dressed in their Versace suits and gowns meant for prom. She was wearing Payless boots and jeans, with a flower button up (what she usually wears), in that moment, she felt like she could never fully belong as a minority at Stanford. Bringing back to us, we decided to move in together (Stanford has fabulous living arrangements for couples) where we lived in one of the graduate residencies as undergrads (special accommodations) and let me tell you, I laugh a lot on these posts about Stanford admits and rejects. Especially when I hear screams and crying in the thin walls of my studio where I hear every single law, engineering, etc student lose their sanity every night when they were probably the same lil people here a few years ago making everyone else look so small.
Anyway, I’ll be graduating with high honors at my small business school in May, my partner will be doing a post-bacc program because the human biology department here is f*cking brutal with no support (please, literally go anywhere else if you’re a minority and forget it if you have a disability, they will leave you with nothing to support you) and I only applied to two graduate schools.
Yeah, you heard that right. I applied to two graduate schools (Columbia and Georgetown) because I didn’t have the time or energy to apply to more and that’s okay!
Three years ago I barely knew what Stanford was, at the time of graduate school I only applied to schools that made sense to me and it was those two. I didn’t apply to 6 or 16 just because of “safeties” I think that’s stupid. You’re just getting in to feel better about yourself than clogging up the waitlist for people genuinely want to attend the program. I said what I said. I didn’t get into Columbia and I didn’t write “Woahs me, I didn’t get into my dream school” but rather I set my phone on the table, got up, I hugged my partner (as she took it harder than I did) and told her “Let’s go get food from our favorite spot”. We never talked about Columbia again.
For Georgetown, I loved their application so much. One of the essay prompts was “choose a quotation” and of course, for one of the first times in my life, I brought out my inner child and wrote about my favorite childhood show: Star Trek (THE FIRST GENERATION) Just to be clear, I didn’t talk about all the shit I went through, didn’t talk about where I’m from, where I’ve been, but only who I am! Y’all be writing essays about things they can see on your application already. I talked about my fascination for human potential, shows like Star Trek changing how the show perceived leadership, teamwork, and diversity. I may have not gotten into Columbia, but when I was sitting in my class one day and I saw the caller ID number from Washington DC, I knew my life would once again change forever. Yep. I got into Georgetown for business, and I’m incredibly grateful.
The purpose of me writing this is to be a voice out there for aspiring graduate students like me. Don’t feel like you need to change yourself to fit-in with the A-holes on this subreddit and many others. If you got into graduate school, I am so proud of you. And if a school overlooked you and didn’t give you that chance, then get up! You didn’t come this far to come this far, if you can make it through everything up to this point you can make it through so much more. Keep trying. You got this.

Tippecanoe United Church Food pantry is open from 12-2, and Food Finders Food Bank Fresh Market is open from 1-6:30. the buses run tomorrow too. -the buses run tomorrow, and you can take them to target. payless, or walmart. stock up on microwaveable food(ramen or those kraft bowls), and some sort of protein. eating them for a few days in a row wont be fun but itll be food?
i have noticed several students posting they can’t afford a higher meal plan and they are struggling to make an 8 track work. here are some future tips for food(in addition to the ones above): -if you would 20 hours a week you can apply for food stamps or SNAPS. here is the application - if you are low income you can apply for a pell grant and purdue promise. pell grant helps pay for tuition and purdue promise pays for housing and dining. google those for more info.

Hi, so in short do I need to include the subcontractors application for payment costs in my CVR as a cost accrual if I’ve not actually assessed this yet and it’s not hit the system? I’m issuing a Payless notice tomorrow as I need to time to assess this as they’re leaving site.
Also, if they do need to be logged as accruals they won’t be accurate as I’ve not assessed them and there will definitely be deductions
