2024.05.29 02:16 Cmdoch Finance in Oil and Gas. My Reply to the Questions!

Right everyone, I must thank the literal hundreds of people who have DM’d me off the back of a couple of comments I’ve made the last few days on posts! I'm hoping that this post will give a bit of clarity to the people who have asked me questions! Also, must apologise I am dyslexic so please give me a break if my punctuation is off haha.
Background -
In 2021 I got an internship at JPM, did a great job and was offered a role on the graduate scheme. I worked in investment services and quickly found out jpm is such a well-oiled machine that there is a team for every single layer of the department. I was placed in Investment services but in the projects team which I wasn’t interested in and was told to work in the market stuff I’d have to grind for 3-4 years. Just FYI I wanted to get into high finance, more specifically trading but knew it would be mega competitive so thought I'd get my foot in the door by going into the support functions.
I loved my time at JPM and I met such awesome people there but there was always something about the rest of my cohort that I just couldn’t gel with. I'm from a working-class family and saw my parents struggle a lot when I was younger. I watched my dad slowly deteriorate until he had a full-blown mental breakdown and never got help for it after and my mother had been on antidepressants since her brother killed himself like 20 years ago and thought she could occasionally come off the tablets which made the home environment real tough. I also don’t have siblings or cousins so I felt so alone during those times. Going back to the people their troubles were so much different to mine and I found it hard to fit in with their lifestyles. ( this is important later).
Anyway, looking into how I could transfer my skills while getting exposure to what I wanted to do which was market work I found out that large industries which have business all over the world require a lot of different currencies, which brought me to oil and gas. I started researching different functions within the industry and found that two very specific departments would offer me that exposure!
Treasury-
looking after the company's cash levels and supplying different currencies when required. This role was marketed to me as a varied role which included FX, market and economic analysis. This would then be used to make decisions on when to purchase, sell or hedge a certain currency. It also involves M&A, board-level presentations and pitches.
Corporate Development -
they look at M&A opportunities constantly, they also look at asset management and can put forward option contracts to different companies for rights to drill in a certain well in exchange for that company getting to drill in their well for some time. Or even simpler. Both companies stay in their wells and just option their revenue for that well. They also work on competitor analysis for earnings calls and shareholder meetings.
I was offered the role of treasury analyst one year ago and have never looked back! I have in the last year worked on Fx, market and economic analysis, trading FX, Hedging FX, and Options, and even been part of a billion-pound merger. All of this with just 1.5 years of experience! I literally would have never gotten this experience if I had stayed at JPM as I'd have been stuck in one team doing one of those functions.
What people have been asking
Where do I live?
I currently live in Aberdeen, Scotland. Aberdeen is one of the O&G capitals of the world with every big name you can think of having a head office of sorts here. We also have thousands of other O&G companies you will have never heard of. Aberdeen is also home to the Big 4 accounting and Big 4 law firms. Several investment banks, wealth management, asset management and pension firms.
Why do I live in Aberdeen?
I was born here and saw what riches the O&G industry could give people. What is also a great opportunity with Aberdeen is that there is a serious shortage of people to work in these firms because the media has been stating for years and years “just five more years left in the oil industry”. This means that you can leverage much higher wages. I’m currently earning well over the national average wage with 2.5 years of experience and could leave my firm tomorrow and get a 10% pay rise down the road.
Another reason. Property is very very cheap here. With the oil boom from the 80’s to 2010 hundreds of thousands of properties were built here and in 2015 people were paying 300,400,500k just for an average flat/apartment because there was so much demand. However, in 2016 there was a huge oil crash and there were thousands of redundancies. This scared off the youth to safer industries. However, this means that there are more properties than people who want to buy at the moment I recently at 26 just bought a two-bed, 70 sqm flat for 113k in the west end next to Michelin-star restaurants, high-class wine bars and that sort of scene. I'm betting the house that Aberdeen makes its return with the renewable sector as well as the oil market growing further. Recently Aberdeen was selected to have the world's largest floating wind farm built starting in the next few years. That is thousands of jobs, people moving here for the construction and then the maintenance. There is also an energy plant being built 35 miles away which needs another 11k people to operate it.
Schedule and benefits -
I work 37.5 hours per week, 8 am - 5 pm mon-thur and 9-1 pm Friday.
35 days holiday plus a further 5 days at Xmas and new year
All health benefits included
8.5% pension from employer and I add 1.5% also.
Wages are different everywhere but as someone junior, I make more than I did in banking.
I go to the office 2/3 days per week
How I got the job -
I had random recruiters message me which prompted me to look into other recruitment firms and apply for every single one of them in my city. They promptly set up calls with me and then I proceeded to get applications left right and centre.
Qualifications -
I have an undergraduate degree in finance and real estate and a diploma in law. However, all qualifications are considered.
What roles should you look for that cover trading, derivatives and M&A-
The two departments you will find these roles and Treasury and Corporate Development
The roles to look for are Treasury, market, financial, finance, and data analyst.
Extra tip - a lot of O&G companies have not changed title names for years like since the 80’s. So look for titles with assistants in them, they are referring to analysts. Once you’re in our you can get her to alter your title. Mine was an accounting assistant. I then got a treasury analyst. My role has nothing to do with accounting.
What other roles are there in O&G?-
Well, there are two sectors onshore and offshore. Onshore is office-based and offshore is site-based.
Onshore you have finance, treasury, CD, tax, legal, audit, accounts, and sales. All that sort of business. I will also say Audit is another interesting one. One of my mates is constantly setting off to Dubai, Saudi, Oman, Chile, Colombia, and Peru all for work, all business class and all 4-5 star hotels (unless they are on base).
Offshore you have account controllers, finance managers, and rig supervisors. You can see for yourself online. These lots get paid extremely well. 3-4 times what you get onshore, however you will live on a boat or an oil rig for 6 months a year, but get the other 6 months at home without having to work.
What companies to look for -
I'd stay clear of the huge firms, they will be the same as banking. A team working on one specific area in the department so your exposure will be much less. Look for small to mid-sized firms. I'm at s small/mid firm with 11k employees and a revenue of around 3 billion per year.
Genuinely, you don’t need to look for the companies, the companies will look for you if you get with a recruiter.
What level can you come in at -
Most places offer internships, grad programs, junior roles, mid roles and senior roles. One of my mates was a manager at a coffee shop for 5 years and did an accelerated uni course to get the minimum qualifications to get an interview. He now tenders bids for international contracts. They love a career switch because you’re fresh and not burnt out! If you can show you can handle your workload and think you’re a good fit you will find a job.
What If I think my finance background isn’t relevant (insurance) -
Whatever you think about your background you can spin it on your CV. I’m not talking about lying but just making the bits which are more important prettier. Most corporate functions are the same. Can you time keep? Can you juggle multiple jobs? Hit deadlines etc. If you can you then apply! Explain you have had an interest for some time and that you want to make a career switch. Then list your strengths and apply them to the role! You will be successful if you want it.
Are there many trading opportunities in this industry? -
Yes and No. The larger firms will likely have full teams like in banks, sitting in London. They will have an fx team, commodity team, derivative team etc. They will be revenue-driving teams! Whereas small to medium-sized firms will have one/two departments doing all of the above but trading for risk mitigation. This means that there is severely less stress on the team to lock in trades! However, you still get the same experience as the market lot but can enjoy your life! Haha. Smaller companies might not be able to fulfil this sort of role and will likely just take losses on straight trades.
Do I need to know about oil and gas to get a job in the industry? -
NO! I knew nothing before joining. I knew about finance and that was that. However, after a year of being there, I have picked up so much to do with the industry. So moving forward if I go to PE or something I will bring banking, trading and energy knowledge which is more than someone who works on the markets desk at JPM.
Can I move to Aberdeen from a different country? -
Yes! And I'd encourage it. In Aberdeen, we have large communities of Americans, Canadians southern Americans, Europeans, Africans, and middle eastern ppl. There is a huge emphasis on bringing outside talent to the city and we have a great integrated and diverse city. I say it like that because I know in larger cities there can be a lot of segregation of certain races and communities. However, in Aberdeen, there is a greater tolerance for internationals because we all bring something different to the table. The people I have met on nights out have been incredible. Helicopter pilots from Nigeria, underwater welders from Peru, and ultra depth divers from iceland. Its a one in a million place where everyone gets along and everyone makes a shit land of money so there is no divide! I've been to every celebration of every religion, I’ve eaten at the table of every race and by the end, it's nothing but respect.
Cost of living in Scotland - my experience -
Considerably less than a lot of other western countries. I’m 6’5 240lb and my weekly food shop is £50-£60. My mortgage is £500 per month, utilities another couple hundred, cars I own three with no debt. You can buy a 2018 range rover here for less than 45k. Aberdeen also has the highest level of disposable income in the uk. If you want to find out more about Aberdeen check out aberdeen. We have beaches, shopping malls, great food, great bars less than two hours from some amazing ski slopes in the winter too.
Hopefully, I have covered most questions. If anyone wants to add me on LinkedIn just dm me and send your link!
If you want me to answer any more questions just comment below and I will reply.

2024.05.29 02:08 0x9015 37 male, what now?

hey there - long time lurker first time poster. Not really sure where to go, what to do, so here I am.
This is an extension of my consciousness so I'm sorry for the word vomit and thank you in advance.
I feel like I've been in this weird phase of ..what started as a quarter life crisis..and has morphed into a mid life crisis.
I've worked in tech/consulting since 2010, in a series of progressive roles, from analyst to VP, averaging $300k-$400k for the last 7 years.
In 2018 I quit consulting to go back to b school to get an MBA, took a role as a VP, in 2020, and I quit a month ago. Straight quit, I walked away from around $200k in commission & w/out having another job lined up, essentially told my CEO to fuck off, I was just absolutely burned out from the company, the role, the people, the whole "working remote" and "zoom" culture, the transactional nature of the role, and transparently I felt like a "hired mercenary", selling software I really didn't believe in but it paid well, and I knew how to sell, so I did it.
I live in a nice house in a nice community, I'm married to an amazing && beautiful woman, I drive a porsche, no consumer debt, $$ in the bank, an MBA from a tier 1 school.
I started doing BJJ around in 2020 because life started "feeling easy", which has helped to an extent w/ my mental state, but I don't know what to do now. I feel stuck. I feel like I can do anything, but i dont know what.
Whenever people/counselors/advisors ask me what do i want to do, the only thing i can respond with is a list of things I absolutely won't do & hate (similar to the aforementioned list).
Over the past month, I've found myself spending *a lot* of time reminiscing on my childhood (I was an only child, grew up poor, on welfare, etc.); I've been going to antique video game stores to buy/play nes/snes/genesis games, etc. Everytime I pick up a genesis game...in the box..with the manual, it puts a huge smile on my face. I love the 16bitness of it, noise, graphics, how they write about the characters in the manual. etc.
I feel like I'm going into this weird place where I'm craving the past, maybe because it signified the uncertainty, unknown and path of excitement of "whats to come" e.g. jr. high -> excitement of high school, high school -> going to college, college -> getting first $$$ job, getting an MBA -> becoming a Vp, etc. I feel like there are no surprises in life left, like unless I do something drastically different, this is it. I don't feel 'old', mentally i feel strong, physically I think i might be in the best shape of my life, but I am absolutely stuck in trying to figure out "whats next". LIke I have no idea what I want to do, the thought of going back into sales or consulting makes me want to stab my eyeballs out, I remember being 24 and wanting to be the CEO of a huge F500, now I cringe at the thought of it. It's a soul crushing experience.
BJJ is cool, I like doing it because it keeps me in shape, I hang out with young dudes who I can mentocoach in life & they can mentocoach me in BJJ, but I'm not delusional there is no $$ in that path.
Sometimes I joke with my wife about buying a farm, investing in an HVAC/plumbing company, and entering the workforce of people who use their hands to "do stuff", I respect those people so much, they are the backbone of America. My house would be up shit creek, no AC, no water, without these guys. I have mad admiration for them.
I have enough $$ until the end of the year to float our current lifestyle, at which point if i don't have a job it will be down to my wife's income (she is a product manager in tech). We can survive off of her income but it doesn't position us for 'growth' and transarently she's going to be bust my balls if i dont have a job/path/plan by then. My wife and I have been working from home together since COVID, i love her, shes an amazing co worker, but if I sit at home for the next 20 years she is going to kill me.
So i don't really know what to do. One of my friends said "for the first time in my life, I have an abundance of time to think/explore, and that is an uncomfortable feeling because you're not waking up with something to do".
Another told me: "neo, there is no spoon" <--- and this one hit me hard (it's a quote from the matrix for those who don't remember).
My friends think I'm doing well (although I think they're also unhappy), my peer's think I'm doing good and have a path to 'the top', my mom tells me to keep my head down and work, that I'm lucky, but I look at people our age e.g. mark Zuckerberg and think I am shitting the bed and missing the marks. They all think its insane that I'm comparing myself to him, but why not? he's approximately our age and has achieved more in life than I ever have.
I think ghost towns are interesting, I've visited some ghost towns over the past few weeks, I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for , but it's cool to see what life was like a generation before us and how people used to live.
I've been in the crypto space as a hobbiest for 5 years, have a low six figs in it, but the recent market action has made me extremely jaded on the premise of crypto as a hedge against the us dollar / debasement, i feel like its become another asset class of wallstreet that draws a lot of parallels to forex.
I don't have any kids, we've been trying for 4 years now, no luck. I think this a huge drag on me personally, i want to have kids, so does my wife. All of our friends have kids, all of them, except us. The whole IVF experience sounds incredibly unappealing and something neither of us want to do, so we're at a standstill for that. not sure how to proceed. When I go on LinkedIn & look at the 'recommended jobs' it presents to me, I want to throw my laptop out the window, VP of saas AI blah blah blah, salesforce consulting director blah blah blah, VP growth blah blah, all meaningless work, creating digital pieces of paper we push from one team to another, convincing others that these "web sites" we build are going to transform the world, when they're not. a generation from now one is going to give a shit about some back-end ERP software that "revolutionizes" the CPQ process.
Tomorrow I'm going to drive ~6 hours to an abandoned ghost town in nevada, then later in the week I'm going to visit some old friends from high school I haven't seen in many years, but I feel really really lost, more specifically I don't feel like I can spend the rest of my life "hanging out' like this, I need something to do.
so..i guess my question is, what do i do now?
Thanks for reading,
Lost millennial.

2024.05.28 18:01 ABrainArchitect Dear America, I'm Breaking Up With You..

It's not you.. it's me.

—or perhaps it's a bit of both.
Back in 2011, I arrived full of hopes, drawn by the glowing promise of the American Dream.
As I sit here at a Colombian coffee shop, I reflect on a decade of dreams, challenges, and revelations that have brought me to this moment of goodbye.
Our story began way before 2011, though. Do you remember?
It was back in 1993 when I first laid my eyes on you. The day my father brought our family to Poughkeepsie, NY, as an expatriate for a few years.
I didn’t speak your language, yet I found myself in your classroom within the second week.
Each morning, I watched my classmates start the day by singing your praises, their hands on their hearts. Although I couldn’t yet understand the words, I felt a connection.
As my vocabulary grew, I got to know your childhood. I learned how your own history was written by people who sought the comfort of your shores for a new beginning.
Those three years immersed in your culture left something in me—a desire that would drive me for the next 15 years.
The idea of hope, patriotism, and capitalism by merit. That anything was possible by working hard.
These things were not found in France, and I came back to see you in 2011 to pursue my dream with you.
I worked hard. I chased the dream. I followed the footsteps of immigrants that came before me, wanting to be successful.
We even got married in 2021—I was now an American Citizen.
I wanted to be successful, and I was.. but deep down, i was not happy.
I had been consumed by the very reason that brought me here.
I lost myself in the process. I forgot why you were initially such a good fit for me.
So I’ve decided to take some time off now, and I don’t know if I’ll return. Don’t worry, as long as we are still married, you are still collecting my taxes, no matter where I am in the world.
I want you to understand the realization I had, so maybe it could help your future relationships.
I was following a childhood narrative I had created years ago, and I was with you for the wrong reasons.
So as I leave, I hope to rewrite my story. A story that aligns more closely with who I am and what makes me happy.
Your’s truly,
B.

1. Unpacking Childhood Influences:

There are two key moments I remember vividly, both of which have profoundly shaped my drive and aspirations.

The Dodge Viper Commercial

It’s the early 2000s, and I’m lounging on the couch with my dad and brother, just chilling and watching TV.
Suddenly, this Dodge Viper commercial comes on.
I was hooked. I was mesmerized. I wanted that car.
Caught up in the moment, I shouted, “I’ll buy that car one day!”
..You should have seen their faces. They burst out laughing like I’d told the best joke of the year.
For them, the idea of me owning such a beast of a car was hilarious. They mocked me for even thinking that I would ever have a chance to own it one day.
First, it hurt. Then, it made me mad and lit a fire inside me.

First time getting fired.

Flash forward to 2010. I’m working at this fancy hotel in downtown Lyon, France. I know it’s not my dream job, but hey, I’m doing my best—minding my details, knowing I’ll patiently climb that ladder.
Then, out of nowhere, my manager Vladimir calls me into his office. He sits me down and hits me with this math pop quiz.
what’s 2+2/2”, he asked?
I shoot back “2,” quick as a flash. Wrong answer 😑.
You see, that’s why we can’t have you working here, Ben. The answer is 3. You’re fired.
And just like that, I was let go on the spot. I was too stunned to say anything.
Turns out, the guy admitted to another employee days later that he was just offloading his bad breakup mood on me—I was the newest hire, an easy target.
The feeling of injustice I felt at that moment was something I never experienced before.
That day, I said to myself: “I will get my revenge. It will take as long as it takes, but I will buy this hotel just so I can fire him back.
These two incidents dictated my future professional path without even knowing it. As I discovered many years later, they were not set backs; they were setups.
I would end up owning real estate. Although it was not this particular hotel, it was apartment buildings. And those fancy cars? Got them too, though not the Viper—sadly, they stopped making them in 2017.

We are driven by escape.

One of my favorite hobbies is to study history’s greatest entrepreneurs. By doing this consistently, you discover patterns:
They were usually running away from something. This is what drives us deep down.
Walt Disney, Oprah Winfrey, Elon Musk, and even J.K. Rowling started their paths driven by the need to change their circumstances or to overcome hardships.
Initially, it's all about escape, about proving something, about getting out from under.
And, in many ways, my own journey mirrored this pattern.

2. My American Dream: A Decade in Fast Forward

In 2011, I arrived in LA, filled with ambition. I hustled through various gigs—from selling bus tour tickets to bartending—before venturing into real estate in Florida.
There, I discovered and pursued my passion for investing, eventually leading my own successful firm.
However, rapid growth brought its challenges—unhappy clients, overwhelming demands, and eventually, a personal and professional burnout.
Looking back on those crazy ten years, I see now that I was so focused on proving everyone wrong and winning at everything that I lost sight of what I really loved doing.
It was more about showing them I could do it, rather than following my own dreams.
This led to a moment of reassessment—was I truly pursuing what mattered to me?

3. The 14-Year-Old Boy at the Steering Wheel.

I needed a shift. I needed to travel, change my environment, and break my patterns of thinking. I needed perspective.
And so I did. Panama, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Huku Hiva, Colombia.
Fun fact, it was in Panama (the first trip) where the seed for my first newsletter was planted.
Anyway, back to the story. My realization:
All this time, I was chasing money. Money was my only motivation.
Why? Because I wanted to run away from not having any. I still wanted to prove to my brother and father on that I could make it enough to buy that damn car.
It was not me at the steering wheel of my company—it was my 14-year-old self.
It was not me acquiring these apartment buildings, it was the boy that for unfairly fired in 2010.
And you know what happens when you chase things for the wrong reasons?
You end up with results that you don't value.
The money I got? I spent it—on cars, houses, experiences, lifestyle.
Can you guess what happened as soon as I got them? I was unsatisfied. I immediately needed a bigger house, a better car, more extravagant and exciting experiences.
I finally sat down for a heart-to-heart with my 14-year-old self, realizing how those early fears and motivations had seeped into my adult life.
I needed to understand what I was running away from, and figure out what I wanted to truly run towards.

4. One gets you started, the other pushes you in the right direction.

Running from something is like sprinting from a tiger — you're filled with a rush of energy. Those childhood memories push you hard and fast.
But that kind of running doesn’t hold up forever. Eventually, you realize something's off. The initial spark fades, and you start asking, ‘What am I really chasing?’
That’s when you need to pivot and start running towards something — something that matters, something that sticks.
Finding your true passion, the thing you’re meant to do, that’s the journey worth pursuing.
For me, it all boils down to thinking, writing, sharing, and inspiring—helping others find their way off the rocky roads I once traveled.
If you’re curious about the questions that guided me through my own maze, I’ve compiled them into a cheat sheet for you.
“Easy for you to say, you are young”
Well. No. First, I am 37. And just to show you it’s never too late to change your path, and find your life’s work, just look at these examples:
Ray Kroc joined McDonald's when he was 52 and built it into the most successful fast-food corporation in the world. What did he do before that? He was a milkshake mixer salesman.
Colonel Harland Sanders started franchising his KFC concept at the age of 62, using his first Social Security check to fund the business.
The point is, it’s not too late.

6. This Feels Like a Stepback.. But Is It?

After a decade or two, if you find that you've been driven by the wrong motivations.. Realigning with your true passions often means taking a step back.
This could affect your finances, your social circle, or even your career path.
But as the late Steve Jobs said,“"It's impossible to connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards."
The past 10 years have taught me invaluable skills that are essential for this new journey:
When you think about it, it’s not really a step backwards. I see it more as a step sideways.
A realignment to a different path that might just take you where you want to be much quicker.

Final Thoughts

Am I really breaking up with America? Not really.
I am breaking up with the ideas that brought me there.
I am distancing myself from an identity that was shaped more by my past and less by my true aspirations.
If you've ever felt like you're on a path set by someone else—whether by society, your past self, or the expectations of others—I encourage you to pause and reflect.
Know that it's never too late to change direction. Your past experiences haven't trapped you; they've prepared you.
Every skill you've developed and every lesson you've learned can help pave a new, more authentic path forward.

2024.05.28 16:45 Either-Trust2952 Bait and switch examples

I'm trying to figure out if I have another reason to lose my mind over this job market.
I responded to a job posting on linkedIn. I have 80-100% of the qualifications for this job. Response from the agency was while I'm a great candidate they won't be moving forward with my application. Second they then offered for me to take in house courses to get more certifications to be job ready. Like WTF. I now go to their LinkedIn page and there are no jobs associated with that company.
It's for a Agile/Scrum Master Role. I've been doing some form of Agile for the last 16 years. With 25 years of various project manager roles. I got my first Agile certification in 2010. Since then I've gotten a few more as well as additional post grad degree in general business.
Are lots of people encountering these job posting that are sales funnels that feel more like scams?
Are there any companies or job postings to stay away from that do this?

2024.05.28 05:44 BolshevikPower First time seller - any best practices / tips?

Hey guys / gals -
Going through a lot of old cards my brother and I had from ages back from early 2000's to early 2010's. Lots of onslaught cards, OG commander, mirrodin, darksteel.
Have a full list of the cards in a csv-able format and "prices" from scryfall included. How much faith should I put into the scryfall prices? What's the best way to sell them if I have a specific list of higher "valued" cards? Individual sale on EBay, LGS, Card Kingdom?
I normally play limited as well and have done MKM / OTJ so will be looking to do this more often. Thanks for your help / advice.

2024.05.27 23:40 CodyStepp From ‘Lemonade Stands’ to Leading Innovation: My Entrepreneurial Journey

Growing up, I was always wheeling and dealing. To me, this wasn’t an entrepreneurial upbringing but just something fun. I am of course the son of a cereal-entrepreneur, and the grandson of, “A man who could sell ice to a polar bear” but even in all of this, I never realized the skills I was acquiring along the way.
Recently, while listening to the My First Million podcast, the guest mentioned a rule they follow: “I never work with founders who didn’t own a lemonade stand when they were young”. Though not literal in this medium of business, it got me thinking about my own past.
As far back as I can remember, around 5th grade, I was on eBay.
My first Power-Seller account, to which they sent me a certificate we framed, was under my father's name, but I ran it exclusively. I remember taking photos on our family digital camera, transferring them to our desktop, and spending hours selling odds and ends.
What I don’t remember however is what I was selling, or really where in my world I got these things from. I do however wager it was flea markets, antique shops, and places of this sort as I do remember spending a great deal of time in each of them as a kid.
One of my biggest successes was purchasing an RC Cola Machine from a city auction for $5 - cash. After spending the rest of the weekend cleaning and scrubbing down the insides I discovered its coin operator mechanism was broken, meaning I couldn’t enjoy beverages on demand.
But the cooling system worked well, and after a little research, I found out there were parts that could be purchased to bypass this for home use.
I think the evening I found this out, it went up for auction on eBay. Set for “Local Pickup”, featuring a compelling story about how great this piece would be in a basement, man-cave, or den and a $50 reserve to ensure I at least 10x’d my investment, the auction went live.
I couldn't tell you how much it sold for, but about 10 days later what I can remember is loading it into my Dad's truck for the second time, a little more gently this go around, and meeting a man in the parking lot of a gas station off the highway.
I also remember Dad, perhaps in disbelief or out of real pragmatic fear, telling me this person might not be real and this could be too good to be true. Neither was the case, and with goods delivered, and payment safely secured via the platform, my love for the process was cemented.
In 8th grade, I turned a school project on the Alaskan Iditarod into a candy-selling business. As part of the project, we placed bets in the form of bags of candy, on the competition.
In my wisdom, I had researched all the competitors the night before and at the end of the race, had won something like 20 bags of candy from the class.
After winning bets in the form of candy bags, I sold them piece by piece from my locker, making a nice profit over the semester and somehow being inconspicuous enough to never attract attention from the teachers, which might have ended with a trip to the principal's office and a cease-and-desist to this little venture.
In 9th grade, while at a friend’s house, I found a pizza oven sitting in his garage. This particular pizza oven was quite dirty but stood out as a unique item with an oven at the bottom, and 4 pizza turning racks on top.
I remember asking his mom if it worked and her not knowing, and saying I could have it if I wanted, to which I accepted.
A few hours of work that weekend to get it cleaned up, and a quick test revealed it not only worked but had lights on top of the turning rack and a display sign.
Back to eBay yet again, I remember, semi-reluctantly as I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen, selling that as well.
The process of finding, fixing, and flipping items became a routine that I thoroughly enjoyed, though I never had the heart to tell my friend I had sold it, and I don’t remember for how much it went either, but I do remember it was purchased via ‘Buy-It-Now” quite fast.
While at the Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree the summer before I graduated high school, I collected limited-edition daily collectable patches that were available. The big gimmick with these patches was that only 2010 of each were made, and scattered across the various stores for thousands of scouts who had attended the event to track down and purchase.
The night I got home from the event I had them uploaded onto eBay and watched as these patches, of which no one was really selling, soared in live auction to somewhere around $650, paying for the entire trip.
I think one of the reasons I remember this one so well is because the timing and luck involved in this sale taught me the importance of seizing opportunities.
Days after this set of patches sold and was delivered to a satisfied buyer, completing the transaction, the Boy Scouts of America - because of patch collectors' outcry over the limited inventory, re-released these sets. Effectively, collapsing the market for all but the collectors who cared for ‘First Print” - which could not be proved.
When I went off to college, my focus shifted from selling items to designing things. I channeled my creativity into digital art and graphic print design, working as a freelance graphic designer.
Over the years, I’ve created logos, brandings, graphic prints, and even worked for a yacht apparel company creating graphics of some of the world's most expensive boats, negotiate contracts, and creating art that to this day is still in the public domain.
However, my first business failure came during this period. Relying solely on word-of-mouth marketing, I struggled to make ends meet.
Walking away from my attempts to run a graphic design business was tough, both personally and financially. It took years to bounce back, but this experience taught me about resilience and how to identify priorities, set your own schedule, and perhaps most importantly remain productive outside the confines of a traditional workday, or boss.
When you are an entrepreneurial type, often you can find yourself rubbing people the wrong way. I believe it is these things that make us almost ‘unemployable’, as I like to call it.
At my core, I have always sought to identify problems and seize opportunities and after an abrupt end to my time in the corporate world due to politics and personal differences, I set out to build Workflow Secrets, and later, the Systems Accelerator Manager (SAM).
SAM is an AI-powered tool designed for real estate agents, helping them build systems and content tailored to their business needs. The journey from selling items on eBay to creating an innovative software solution has been driven by my entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to help people create a better life.
Reflecting on my journey, I see how each step, from a 5th grader working to craft the perfect description to draw attention to SAM, has been a natural progression of my entrepreneurial DNA.
Each venture, success, and failure has shaped my approach to business, and I am excited to continue this path of innovation and growth. How I see it, this story only grows from here, perhaps this next chapter will involve you.
Thanks for reading.

Leviathan Natural Gas Field - Discovered: The Leviathan field was discovered in 2010 by Noble Energy and its partners. - Start of Production: Leviathan began production in December 2019.
Tamar Natural Gas Field: - Discovered: The Tamar field was discovered in 2009 by Noble Energy and its partners. - Start of Production: Tamar started producing natural gas in March 2013.
Egypt and Israel had originally agreed to supply through the pipeline 1.7 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year for use by the Israel Electric Corporation. This amount was later raised to 2.1 billion cubic metres per year to be delivered through the year 2028. In addition, by late 2009, EMG signed contracts to supply through the pipeline an additional 2 billion cubic metres per year to private electricity generators and various industrial concerns in Israel and negotiations with other potential buyers were ongoing. In 2010, the pipeline supplied approximately half of the natural gas consumed in Israel.
Following the removal of Hosni Mubarak as head of state, and a perceived souring of ties between the two states, the standing agreement fell into disarray. According to Mohamed Shoeb, the head of the state-owned EGAS, the "decision we took was economic and not politically motivated. We canceled the gas agreement with Israel because they have failed to meet payment deadlines in recent months".
Shaul Mofaz (former minister of defense of Israel) said that the cancellation was "a new low in the relations between the countries and a clear violation of the peace treaty".
Eventually, gas shortages forced Egypt to cancel most of its export agreements to all countries it previously sold gas to in order to meet internal demand.
بعد كده ده ادي ان إسرائيل ترفع علينا قضية ف چينيڤ ان احنا اخلينا بالعقد المكتوب واننا وقفنا تصدير الغاز (العقد كان ممتد ل 2028)
The Egyptian state entities supplying the pipeline attempted to declare force majeure in cancelling the gas agreement with EMG and the Israel Electric Corporation, while the latter contented the cancellation amounted to a unilateral breach of contract. The matter was referred to the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce in Geneva. After four years of proceedings the arbitration panel ruled against Egypt and ordered it to pay approximately US$2 billion in fines and damages to EMG and the IEC for unilaterally cancelling the contract. Egypt then appealed the panel’s decision to the Swiss courts, who also ruled against Egypt in 2017.
بعد كده استمرت مباحثات بين الجانبين من 2015 ان مصر تستورد غاز من إسرائيل نظراً لزيادة الاستهلاك المحلي وفعلا بدأت إمدادات الغاز من إسرائيل ف يناير 2020
In January 2020, Israel began shipping gas from the Tamar field to Egypt, ending a six-year period in which the pipeline had been unused. Shipments were initially 200 million cubic feet per day, with plans to increase to 500 million. The gas export deal was signed with Egyptian firm Dolphinus Holdings, for sale of 85.3 billion cubic meters of gas over 15 years. While some of the gas was to be used in Egypt for domestic consumption, the remainder was intended to be re-exported to Europe through one of Egypt's LNG facilities.

Beyond Convenience: The Magical Uses of Baby Carriers, Slings & Backpacks
Baby carriers, slings, and backpacks are often seen as practical tools for parents, freeing their hands and allowing them to get things done. But did you know these everyday items hold a touch of magic? Throughout history and across cultures, they've been imbued with symbolic and practical uses that go far beyond just carrying a child.
Let's dive into the fascinating world of the "magical" baby carrier.

https://preview.redd.it/ai1v4kzsg03d1.png?width=457&format=png&auto=webp&s=7df7c8cfd4e28f931d076d338e8035bd96df94fa
A Global Tradition: Carrying Cultures
Babywearing, the practice of carrying a child in a sling or carrier, has been around for millennia. In fact, a 2010 study published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology found evidence of slings dating back 37,000 years! Across continents, cultures have developed unique styles and traditions around babywearing.
  • · Africa: The "pagne" or "wrapper" is a long piece of fabric used to tie a baby securely on the wearer's back. It fosters a close bond and allows mothers to continue working in the fields.
  • · Asia: The Mei Tai, a rectangular carrier with four straps, offers comfort and support for both parent and child. It's a popular choice in China and other Asian countries.
  • · Europe: The ring sling, a simple yet effective design with a single ring and fabric panel, originated in Europe and is gaining popularity worldwide for its ease of use.
The Magic of the Bond
The benefits of babywearing extend far beyond just keeping your hands free. Studies have shown that close physical contact between parent and child, facilitated by babywearing, has a profound impact on a baby's development and well-being. Here's a deeper dive into the science behind the snuggle:
1. Building a Bridge of Bonding:
  • · The Power of Oxytocin: When a parent and baby are close, skin-to-skin contact triggers the release of oxytocin, a hormone nicknamed the "love hormone." Oxytocin promotes feelings of love, trust, and attachment in both parent and child. This hormonal dance strengthens the emotional bond between them, creating a foundation for secure attachment.
  • · Mirroring Matters: Newborns are naturally wired to mimic their caregiver's facial expressions and emotions. Babywearing allows them to be close enough to easily pick up on these subtle cues, fostering emotional intelligence and social development.
  • · The Calming Cradle: The rhythmic movement of being carried can be incredibly soothing for a baby. Studies have shown it can reduce stress hormones like cortisol, leading to a calmer and more content baby.
2. Regulating the Tiny Thermostat:
  • · Maintaining Optimal Temperature: Newborns are notoriously bad at regulating their body temperature. Being carried close to a parent's warm body helps them maintain a stable internal temperature, reducing the energy they expend trying to stay warm and allowing them to focus on growth and development.
  • · Breathing Easy: Close physical contact can help regulate a baby's breathing patterns, potentially reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Studies suggest that the rhythmic rise and fall of the parent's chest can guide the baby's breathing, promoting a healthy respiratory rhythm.
3. The Lullaby Effect: Aiding Sleep
  • · Motion Magic: The gentle rocking motion of being carried can be a natural sleep aid for babies. This rhythmic movement mimics the feeling of being in the womb and can lull a baby into a deeper, more restful sleep.
  • · Quieting Cues: Babies can easily pick up on a parent's emotions. The feeling of security and comfort they get from being close to a calm parent can help them feel safe and secure, promoting longer stretches of sleep.
  • · Reduced Reflux: For babies who struggle with reflux, being held upright in a carrier can help keep stomach contents down, leading to fewer disruptions and a more peaceful night's sleep for everyone.
These are just a few of the ways close physical contact, facilitated by babywearing, positively impacts a baby's development and well-being. The benefits extend far beyond practicality, creating a foundation for a strong emotional bond, a well-regulated system, and a good night's sleep – for both baby and parent.
This close connection can be seen as a form of "magic" – a way to create a safe and secure environment for a child to thrive.
Symbolic Significance: More Than Just Fabric
Baby carriers have also held symbolic meaning in various cultures. In some Native American traditions, the carrier represented the womb, a safe haven for the child as they transitioned from the spirit world to the physical one. In Japan, the Kimono-style carrier symbolized the strength and support of the family unit.
These symbolic uses highlight the importance of nurturing and protecting a child, adding a layer of cultural significance to the practical act of carrying.
The Magic of Protection: Warding Off Evil
Many cultures believed that baby carriers offered more than just physical comfort. They were seen as shields against evil spirits or misfortune. In some African traditions, specific patterns or amulets were woven into the fabric to ward off negative influences. Similarly, certain materials or colors might be chosen for their protective properties.
This belief in the protective power of baby carriers speaks to the deep-seated human desire to safeguard our children.

Modern Magical Uses: Beyond Tradition
While the world has become more modern, the magic of baby carriers persists. Here are some fascinating ways they're used today:
Kangaroo Care: A Symphony of Skin-to-Skin
Kangaroo care, practiced with a specially designed carrier, goes beyond simply holding a baby. It creates a symphony of physical and emotional benefits for premature infants. Here's a closer look at the magic:
  • · Temperature Regulation: Tiny preemies struggle to maintain their body temperature. Kangaroo care provides the warmth and stability of a parent's body, mimicking the womb's environment and reducing the need for energy-draining external heat sources.
  • · Stress Reduction: The calming effect of skin-to-skin contact is well documented. Kangaroo care lowers a baby's stress hormones and promotes the release of oxytocin, a hormone known to promote relaxation and bonding. This can lead to less crying and improved sleep patterns.
  • · Improved Vital Signs: Studies have shown that kangaroo care can stabilize a preemie's heart rate, breathing, and blood oxygen levels. This can be crucial for fragile newborns still developing these vital functions.
  • · Boosted Immunity: Kangaroo care exposes the baby to beneficial bacteria from the parent's skin, potentially aiding in the development of a healthy immune system.
  • · Enhanced Bonding: The close physical contact allows parents and preemies to bond in a unique way. This can be especially important for families who may have had limited contact due to a baby's stay in the NICU.
Babywearing for Special Needs: A Supportive Embrace
For children with developmental delays or sensory processing disorders, the world can be an overwhelming place. Babywearing offers a safe haven and a number of therapeutic benefits:
  • · Proprioceptive Input: The gentle pressure of a carrier provides proprioceptive input, which helps a child become aware of their body position in space. This can improve balance, coordination, and overall body awareness.
  • · Sensory Regulation: The close physical contact and rhythmic movement of being carried can have a calming effect on a child's nervous system, reducing anxiety and promoting feelings of security.
  • · Focus and Attention: The feeling of containment can help a child with sensory processing issues focus and engage with their surroundings more effectively.
  • · Social Interaction: Babywearing allows a child to participate in activities and social interactions from a secure vantage point, fostering development and reducing social anxiety.
Dads Get Carried Away Too: The Rise of Babywearing Dads
Traditionally, babywearing has been associated with mothers. However, dads are increasingly embracing the benefits and joys of carrying their children. Here's why:
  • · Bonding Benefits: Skin-to-skin contact promotes bonding for fathers just as much as it does for mothers. Kangaroo care and babywearing allow dads to develop a deeper emotional connection with their children.
  • · Active Role in Caregiving: Babywearing frees up dads' hands, allowing them to participate more actively in childcare tasks like housework, errands, or playing with older siblings.
  • · Confidence Boost: Carrying their child can boost a dad's confidence and sense of competence in caring for their little one.
  • · Skin-to-Skin Advantage: Dads can offer the benefits of skin-to-skin contact as well, even without breasts. Their bare chest can provide warmth, comfort, and the release of oxytocin.
Babywearing for dads is not just a trend; it's a beautiful way to nurture the father-child bond and promote a more engaged approach to parenting.
The Future of Babywearing: Innovation and Inclusivity
The future of babywearing looks bright! Manufacturers are constantly innovating, creating carriers that are ergonomic, comfortable, and stylish. There's a growing focus on inclusivity, with designs catering to different body types and carrying preferences.
The Takeaway: More Than Just a Carrier
Baby carriers, slings, and backpacks are more than just tools. They are a window into cultures, symbols of care and protection, and a bridge to a deeper connection between parent and child. So the next time you strap on your carrier, remember the magic it holds – the magic of love, safety, and the enduring bond between parent and child.
Here are some additional stats and figures to consider:
  • · A 2019 report by Grand View Research estimated the global baby carrier market to reach USD 2.2 billion by 2025.
  • · A 2017 study published in Pediatrics found that 70% of mothers reported using a baby carrier in the first 3 months of their child's life.
The Call to Adventure: Choosing Your Carrier
With so many styles and features available, choosing the right carrier can feel overwhelming. But fret not, intrepid parent! Here's a quick guide to help you find your perfect match:
  • · Consider your baby's age and development. Newborns need a supportive carrier that cradles their head and neck. As they grow, you can explore options with more carrying positions.
  • · Think about your carrying preferences. Do you want a hands-free option like a backpack carrier, or a more intimate wrap sling?
  • · Comfort is key! Choose a carrier made from breathable fabrics and with adjustable straps to ensure a good fit for both you and your little one.
Caring for Your Carrier
Once you've found your ideal carrier, proper care will ensure it lasts for years to come. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for washing and drying. Spot cleaning minor messes can help prevent the need for frequent washing.
The Takeaway: More Than Just a Carrier
Baby carriers, slings, and backpacks are more than just tools. They are a window into cultures, symbols of care and protection, and a bridge to a deeper connection between parent and child. So, the next time you strap on your carrier, remember the magic it holds – the magic of love, safety, and the enduring bond between parent and child.
