2024.05.15 18:47 PerfectAd2144 Did I get the job?

I had an interview last Friday at 10am, I showed up 15 minutes early and was seen almost as soon as I walked in. The interview lasted only 15 minutes and they barely asked me questions. They asked if I had questions and I asked what they expected out of an employee and they said they wanted someone nice, responsible, and shows up to work. I replied that my father is a supervisor and I know very well about work ethic and it takes a lot for me to even call in. I made them laugh a lot throughout the interview and then they asked about what I wanted to get paid and I think this is where I messed up!! I said I wanted to be paid at least $14 through $15 but I’m willing to negotiate. They shook their head and then the interview was concluded with the woman interviewing me saying they liked me and the second interview will be held by the owner of the building. I wasn’t told when they were going to reach out. Do you think I got the job? My concerns are that I won’t get the job because the entire staff is white and I was the only black girl there. I made sure my appearance was clean and neat. I asked the people around me and they said my answers were good, but I want more opinions lol
Edit: I called and they told me to reach out to them next week because the resumes haven’t been checked by the owner.

2024.05.15 18:44 MountainBlock What's the best approach to building a model to match Job Titles to Standardized Roles Using NLP?

A small part of my job involves getting a client's dataset of employees, and mapping their positions to a list of standardised titles, based on the roles' title, the assumed positoin in the hierarchy, and the salary. For example, something like "Finance Assistant" would be mapped to our standardised role "Accounts Clerk", or a "Helpdesk Agent" might be mapped to our "Customer Care Agent" role.
I have a CSV file with 280 standardised titles as well as a brief description of each one. Although the past data is not so accurate, I also have past mappings of company titles to each standardised role.
I'm currently exploring the best approach for this task. Previously, I was advised against using an LLM for this, but I've since learned about Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and wonder if it might be applicable here. I’m considering using BERT, but I'm open to suggestions for more advanced models if they offer better accuracy.
Here are some ideas I've thought of and come across
  1. Using BERT (uncased or large) for semantic understanding and maybe GPT-3 embeddings more contextual understanding (could help given similar roles, e.g. a Compliance Officer is not the same as, say, a Supply Chain Officer). The goal is to achieve a high level of accuracy in mapping.
  2. Considering using some kind of RAG (perhaps through Langchain) to additional contextual information from the descriptions.
Are there other models or approaches that might be better suited for this kind of semantic and contextual matching? Looking forward to feedback.

2024.05.15 18:35 BefuddledAardvark Better Job Offers After Starting at Anothet Company

I was laid off back in early March along with many others in my industry. I saw the writing on the wall based on how leadership was talking about numbers. So over the last two months I worked there, I updated my resume and begun looking at what jobs were being posted for my roles. Oh man is it a tough market.
Well the call finally came in early March and I hit the ground running. I applied to over 50 jobs in the first month. I was invited to interview for 7 roles! So great response rates.
I spent the last two months interviewing at these various companies only to start getting the rejections one after another. Each week came with a new rejection, some after 4 rounds of interviews and I started to get discouraged. Now down to the last job in my pipeline and I get an offer after only 2 months being laid off! However, the catch is that it pays $20k less base than my previous role. This was after negotiating the salary up $10k. My wife and I agree that it is better than unemployment, so I accept.
Well low and behold the day I accept (Company A) I get invited to a first round with one company (B) and a 7th round with another company (C) that had ghosted me for 3 weeks despite continously checking in with them. Fast forward 2 weeks and I get an offer from company B after only 2 interviews and it is the same pay as my previous role! So $20k higher than where I just started this week. I am going attempt to negotiate another $10k at company B, so it may be $30k higher. Do I burn a bridge with Company A and accept the new job? Both have great cultures.
I feel terrible to do this but it is $20k to $30k more BASE! It will suck for my manager for sure. Thoughts?
Oh and company C if I get it is even more money and a promotion, but the culture is horrible. So I don't think I want that anyway.
TLDR; offered $20k to $30 more in the first week of starting a new job after being unemployed. What should I do?

Did anyone receive an interview invite for the competition for Senior Advisor? The application deadline was 9th April and the job description page indicates that it is still in “Application Screening”
Just curious as the automated response suggested that interview invites would be sent roughly 4 to 6 weeks past the application deadline

2024.05.15 18:30 ughmandy Hanap Client 2024

As you guys know, walang kasiguraduhan sa freelancing so eto nanaman ako ngayon naghahanap ng bagong client/agency/company. For context, I used to have one client earlier this year (from Upwork) and we had a very easy partnership but nagkaron siya ng personal issues so I was offboarded ng April 30. Right after the I found out nagstart agad ako maghanap ng clients and companies I could apply to and so far ito ang breakdown ng mga application na pinagdaanan ko.
  1. Upwork - Since dito ko nahanap young last client ko, dito rin ako nagstart ulit maghanap. I have a Top Rated badge in upwork so naisip ko why not use it as much as I can. I sent out 12 proposals and bought 200 connects (around 100 lang nagamit ko) which got me 2 interviews and 1 contract after a week.
  2. CoconutVA - I've heard lots of good things about this agency so I sent in my application along with a video recording of myself through loom. Di naman mahirap yung application process, medyo time consuming lang kasi kailangan maligo (lol) and mag-ayos for the recording. Di naman required, pero syempre best foot forward. I asked ChatGPT to give me a sample script and used it as an outline for the one that I actually used. After three days (I think) I got an email back saying they included me in their potential talent pool but no guarantees pa that I'll get matched so they encourage entertaining other offers for the meantime - which is a great sign na di sila nangggatekeep ng opportunities.
  3. FlexJobs - I found a Remote Office Assistant role from a US-based digital marketing agency na yung rate is around $2k/month. May exam din silang pinagawa and excel skill test na medj mahirap. Haven't heard from them so far pero if you guys want to apply rin (I think they're still pooling) send me a DM for the link haha.
  4. FreeUp - The thing with FreeUp is it's like a cross between an agency and a freelancing platform. Medyo lengthy rin ang application process nila kasi maraming questions na need sagutan in paragraph form. And then I was sent an email with a module and a super easy short quiz, tapos nung pasado na they sent me an interview invite with one of their reps. After pumasa, proceed na sa account creation (just received this email an hour ago and di ko pa ginagawa so mag update ako after)
  5. VirtualElves - I sent in an initial application and I got an email back after a few days asking me to fill out a Candidate Profile Form pero I don't think I'll be proceeding with the application at this time kasi parang di ko siya priority right now and ang dami ko pang hinihintay to hear back from.
  6. Athena - This was one of the most grueling application process I've ever experienced, but everything was quite quick after I passed the exam last week. The interview was scheduled kaninang umaga then a few hours later I received another invitation for a training offer at 10PM tapos this coming Monday start na daw ng training. Medyo surprising lang kasi form what I've seen and heard, this process usually takes weeks prior to training.
Special mentions: OLJ - First time kong icheck tong platform na to just to see kung magkano ang usual rates na inooffer nila doon, tapos nanlumo ako sa nakita ko so di na ko nagaksaya pa ng oras sa site na to.
This pinned thread dito sa BuhayDigital subreddit. Pakiramdam ko ang daming nagooverlook into pero is a to as mga una kong chineck na resource when I started looking for jobs. Jan ko nahanap yung FreeUp and FlexJobs. Very useful!
One thing that I like to do is to use ChatGPT as much as I can, but I do heavy editing to not make it sound like it's written by an AI because I'm always deathly afraid that the recruiters might find out - because THEY WILL and bestie that's going to be embarassing.
The biggest tip I can give to anyone who is looking for clients right now is learn how to OPTIMIZE EVERYTHING. Optimize your resume, optimize your cover letters, optimize your online profiles, and most importantly, optimize your skills. Check mo kung among pinaka in-demand na skills and industries, then pivot accordingly.
Good luck sa mga kasabay kong naghahanap ng clients, wag tayo papa-lowball!

2024.05.15 18:30 airodam Need 3 references

I recently accepted an offer for a hospital job I really want, but now they are asking for references. Good news is there's no phone call involved and they only need emails. Bad news is I have no friends or anything so I'm seeking some kind souls here. I know it's a long shot, but reach out to me if interested and I'll send the details expeditiously. It'd super helpful if you have a professional sounding resume, but beggars can't be choosers lol

Hi fellow HR pros - currently job searching and wondering if anyone has paid for a LinkedIn rewrite that they’ve been happy with? I know these types of things (like resume writers) have wide variety of quality but looking for a recommended service who has experience with HR profiles and good testimonials. Would be open to good resume writers for HR folks also (though I’m more confident in my resume than my LinkedIn) Thanks!

2024.05.15 18:26 BunniiButt I'm tired of it all

Been applying for jobs for quite sometime now. I thought I actually had a chance at a state government job because I did very well in the interview but was not chosen. And when I asked for feedback they said my application and interview was great but ultimately they only could choose one person.
The only job offer that I did receive was a while ago that in the moment I had declined because I was so disappointed I was only being offered $19. Looking back I probably should have taken the job but I didn't.
I recently had an interview yesterday and it was for a position that I have no experience in but in the job description it stated experience was "preferred, but not necessary" and they further stated in the interview they don't mind hiring someone with limited experience as they have a good training program. I thought I did well in some answers but fumbled on others and asked a few times if the question could be repeated as I got nervous and blanked and got off track with my response.
I am desperately trying to land an admin type of role; however, I have no admin experience and my last "big role" was teaching English abroad (TEFL).
I'm so tired of job searching and am now just applying to job that I know I definitely have a shot at such as server, barista, cashier, team member, etc. I thought I can land an office job but clearly not. I am now considering taking antidepressants and / or checking myself into a facility because I'm just feeling that low and am now re-engaging in self-harm.

2024.05.15 18:25 Consistent-Floor8931 Paid Internships: Where YOU PAY!

I wanted to share my recent experience with job hunting, specifically with internships, to raise awareness of a concerning trend I've encountered. Securing a job has been challenging for me, leading me to apply to numerous internships in the hopes of maintaining my skills and keeping my resume up-to-date. Imagine my joy when I finally received replies – it felt like a win after so many struggles.
However, my excitement turned to dismay when I learned that not only were these internships unpaid, but they also required me to pay fees ranging from $100 to $450 to participate.
It's just unfortunate when we have to pay to get an opportunity to succeed - I wanted to create this post to see if there were those who were in the same situation and also to create awareness - you should not pay for internships that are unpaid!

2024.05.15 18:23 P3GL3Gz WWYD? Career Choice

Safety Pro family, I need your help. Long story short- current job has an end date as company is changing direction, need a new job.
Option 1- job close to home (10-15 minute drive), lots of benefits (employer is really selling this aspect of the compensation package, although I know I won’t use most benefits), job security, kinda corporate and I expect (based on interview) red tape, bureaucracy, politics and overall not a lot of motivated people. Job comes with option of going down pension path or 401k, this job will have some aspect of flex working (hybrid 1 day a week, or 9/80 schedule or 4/10s, etc. job otherwise has a set schedule (9-5 or similar) with minimal “emergency responses”. Pay is considerably much less than I currently make ($20K+). Raises are based on yearly performance reviews.
Option 2- job further away (commute of roughly 1 hour each way), job will have emergency responses to attend to, job will have travel at times to other cities using a company vehicle, job has some duties that I despise, employer doesn’t have a great reputation with regards to business practices but would be shielded from that as this position is in the corporate office. Compensation is where I am currently and offers a yearly bonus, raises based on annual performance reviews.
Option 3- keep looking.
I do not have any BCSP certs (work schedule was all over the place and never had time), just lots of experience and classes I have taken. I have a good reputation with my work ethic and my resume demonstrates that I am a valuable employee with skills/experience. My area is tough and there are never any jobs around here as it is just not an area with a lot of industry/manufacturing/construction/etc. I cannot move for family reasons.
TIA!!!

2024.05.15 18:20 copaceticconvert Are Your Sigils Not Working? Here's 7 Ways To Supercharge Them.

We're familiar with the tried-and-true method of firing off sigils. It's vulgar, but it works. But, a lot of people hit a wall after the first 5-10 sigils and they stop working. This is when we need to pivot. Here are some ways to add more thought into your sigil casting. More thought=more energy in the direction of the sigil, which is always a good thing during casting.
  1. Astrological Correspondences:
Time your sigils alongside astrological events that are suitable for your working. The moon is an easy one for this.
New moons are low points in the cycle, so use those to wipe the slate clean and to dedicate yourself, to set a new course. Full moons are culminations, they're good for directing energy at a problem, as well as cutting ties with anything actively.
Also, keep your eye out throughout the year as well. I'll give you this one for free: May 18th, Jupiter will be conjunct the sun, with Venus and Uranus close by. Great time to manifest unexpected blessings.
  1. Elemental Correspondences:
Tie elements into your work based on what you need to achieve, and make sure to match them correctly.
Do you want to stop smoking? Bury the sigil instead of burning it, so that way the earth is giving a bit of energy to it over a long period of time.
Want to summon a fling? The magic only needs to work for one night, so burn away!
Also, look into the various realms that the elements reign; Fire is passion, zeal, and creativity, air is intellect and strategy, water is emotion, and extremely mutable, and earth is material goods.
Tip: This nests well into #1. Bury a sigil in Taurus, burn it in Aries, etc.
  1. Numerology and Gematria:
Want love?
L = 12
O = 15
V = 22
E = 5
12+15+22+5=44
4+4=8
Give your sigil eight sides. Cast it eight times, or on August 8th at 4:48.
  1. Color:
This nests well with the elements. You're casting a love spell or a curse? Write it with a red pen. Want money? Use green? Protection? Black.
  1. Use Every Sense While Casting it:
Try making the environment you cast the sigil in completely unique, engaging every sense in some way that relates to what you're trying to manifest.
You want to manifest a relationship? Cast it in your bedroom, with scented candlelight, roses on the bed, and a piece of chocolate on your tongue.
You want protection from evil? Point a knife at it in the garage before burying it at the edge of your property and end it taking a whiff of smelling salts.
Those are two different kinds of workings, so casting them should feel different from each other. When you get good at this, every sigil should be unique.
  1. Turning One Spell into Many:
Runesoup has an excellent article on this, but I'll touch on it too. Find a way to break up one desire into several.
For example, if you want to get a new job, you could just cast "I am in a new job that I love," or you could cast "I find interesting leads on Indeed," "I am a persuasive interviewee," "I get job offers that are higher than I expect," "Recruiters find my resume impressive," and so on and so forth.
Not only does this give you more time and more energy to put towards your goal, but the numbers in and of themselves can have magical correspondences. The more opportunities to add intention into your working, the better.
  1. Do Something That Signals to The Universe That You Know This Will Happen.
Aleister Crowley was once out of money. So, he did an elaborate money ritual, and then he spent the last of his money on ice cream. He did this because he 100% had faith that money was coming in.
Listen; We all aren't Crowley. I don't want to advocate that anyone plays chicken with the universe. But You should act confidently that whatever sigil you just casted is on its way. If you manifested a partner, make sure your Tinder is in top shape. If you manifested a job, start looking at what you might wear for the interview.
You made this a part of your story. Act like it.
Compare these two sigil rituals:
"John wanted a new job. John wrote "John has a good job." on a piece of paper, crossed out the repeating letters and vowels, made a symbol, jerked off while staring at the symbol, and then burned the sigil."
OR
"John wanted a career. CAREER = 58, and 5+8=12, so John made 12 sigil intentions all relating to thing he'd need to bring into his life for a new career. He looked at a sky chart and noticed that Venus was about to enter his 10th house of career, let's say Gemini, so he made sure that at least half of those prompts related to the finer things he wanted to manifest in his new career, as well as the mental skills he would need to capitalize on opportunities.
The day after the first new moon after Venus enters Gemini, he starts a six day routine where he puts a sigil on him, maybe in his shoe, and does a five mile jog in nature. At the end, or when there's a good wind. he rips it up and throws it into the breeze.
The other six he distributes between fire and earth, burying four and burning two. (This is getting long but assume this as thought out as the air one above.)
When all this is said and done, he makes sure his suit is dry-cleaned and that his headshot on LinkedIn is up to date."
If you were the Universe, which John would you listen to?

2024.05.15 18:18 slupo Anyone having bad interviews because of the interviewers?

All the interviews I've had lately have been bad. At first I thought it was me. But after thinking about it some more, I realized it was because of the interviewers.
They all seem completely unprepared. Like they barely know anything about me and are figuring it out during the interview. So they come up with random questions on the fly while looking over my portfolio and resume during the interview.
I find myself trying to steer the interview so I can talk about my best qualities since they are not really asking questions about them.
Also, there seems to be zero curiosity. Like I'll say what I think is something interesting about my life. And there will be no followup about it. It's like they haven't heard anything.
I'm struggling to sell myself proactively. Otherwise the interview would be over in 5 minutes.
Maybe it's because there are 100's of applications for any one job, I don't know. But I personally prepare for days leading up to an interview. I have specific notes laid out. I do my research on the agency and the people. And I don't get a shred of that back. Frankly, it's starting to piss me off.

2024.05.15 18:16 Several_Astronaut_36 So, job hopping. How long do you have to work before it's appropriate to job hop that won't taint your resume?

This is a pretty general question, so I'm not gonna bore you with my background information too much. Basically, I am 23F first-jobber, working my first every full-time job. Graduated Bachelor's with a pretty good GPA (ranked 3rd in my graduating class). However, I am not that level of genius or impressive enough to get a huge pay right after university. My motivation nowadays is to have high pay as soon as I can. Not currently worried about going up that corporate ladder, as long as the work's meaningful and I have good pay compared to others my age.
Been hearing a lot about the wonders of job hopping, but also heard a lot about how job hopping can affect how HR views your resume (they don't want you to job hop on them too)
So my question is, how long is it appropriate to work before job hopping (in months or years)?

2024.05.15 18:16 MoveInteresting4334 Needing perspective on manager feedback

Hi all, I could use some experienced perspective on manager feedback to see if I’m just too in my head or if my contributions are being overlooked.
For some background, I’m a mid-level dev (5yoe) working at a very, very large bank. I was brought onto a team about two years ago that’s rebuilding a mission critical internal tool. This internal tool was an old (15 years old?) Java app serving JSP pages that was added on to and patched a lot over its life. The end result is a Frankenstein monster that nobody really understands the full features of and there is little documentation, mostly vague requirements. Your typical “just make it work like the old one” situation.
Despite nobody on the 3 teams developing this app having any React experience at all, it came down from on high that we WOULD use React because all our development is moving to React. They moved me onto the team because I had some limited react experience.
Since then, I have: - Held several training sessions with the teams on React and Typescript - Written most of the tech designs for the React side of the application - implemented logging and telemetry on the UI side after a year of only having it for the backend, and gave a talk across our entire product group about it (seven teams) - at the request of management, re-written (solo, under tight deadline) three different features developed by the other teams that were extremely buggy, convoluted, and never worked correctly. We haven’t had an issue with them since, and this unblocked dozens of dev hours - trained and oversaw our four interns over last summer
I’ve been talking with my manager about wanting promotion from 601 (lower mid level dev) to 602 (higher mid level dev) because much of what I’m doing actually meets the job description of more senior levels (603). My manager told me that while I am hands down one of the best programmers across the three teams, my knowledge of our complex infrastructure and CI/CD wasn’t there yet. In addition, she suggested I find a “problem area” to solve, like one of our 602s that recently took charge of a database migration.
She’s absolutely right about the infra and deployment side. Our deploys require a complex series of requests, approvals with very specific info from very specific and far spread systems. Everytime I do one, I get more comfortable, but I only do one every few months so it’s hard to get practice.
What stung was her statement about finding a “problem area” like the 2 month db migration. In my mind, taking an entire half of our app (the Ui) that was in shambles, leveling up three teams, implementing the monitoring, and working the tech designs WAS finding a problem area and solving it. In a big way, often requiring long hours.
I feel that 1) they don’t really take the Ui app seriously because they’ve always worked on multi page apps and view it as glorified JSPs and 2) I’ve worked so hard to make the UI a non-pain point that they don’t even realize all the work I put in.
This is already overly long but I’m happy to clarify or provide any examples. I just need some perspective.
Thanks!
Edit: I also want to add that most of the complexity of our app is in the UI. Like extremely dynamic forms and screens, including many screens that are slightly but crucially different from each other. Our backend is mostly a middleware that communicates with other services handled by other teams.

the programm schedules incoming jobs either on the last processor or on a specific one in the middle.

2024.05.15 18:12 Popular-Movie8765 Former teacher and medical front desk person looking to go into cybersecurity (or low-level IT to gain experience). Not hearing anything back.

I know the odds are stacked against me to get into tech (cybersecurity specifically) without a degree, but I do know it’s possible. My dad is a cybersecurity manager and he does not have a degree, he’s just gotten very lucky over the years.
I’ve been working on a cybersecurity certificate (I’m about 75% done) and they made it sound like it’d be easy-peasy to just get a job with a certificate 🙃.
So what do I need to do to really stand out given that I don’t have “relevant” experience (though I did try to point out transferable skills)? I recognize I’m going to have to start at the very bottom of the food chain, but so far I haven’t even heard back from those positions.
Also, probably worth mentioning: for various reasons both of my jobs listed on my resume do not have references attached to them (I’ve had the worst luck when it comes to bosses who hate you as soon as you leave). I’ve only got a reference from one of my volunteer positions, as well as a reference from my current job (working as a nanny - not listed).

It was summer. He needed money to pay for school next year. He decided to get a job. He needed to apply to different places. He first made a resume. He then made a cover letter. He walked around his neighborhood.

2024.05.15 18:10 kamaria21 Is Hybrid possible through negotiation?

have an interview for a social media marketing position in a couple of days. When applying for the job, the description did not mention whether it was a full time, remote or hybrid work schedule.
During the call with the recruiter, she mentioned that it is a full time job, Monday to Friday. The commute is really far and would be too much every day.
How possible is it for them to reconsider the full time element? What should I do. Please advice.

2024.05.15 18:09 hanuap How to Combine Two Sheets into One New Sheet While Avoiding Duplicates and Add Missing Data From Both Into the New Sheet

Hey everyone! I'm trying to learn how to get Google Sheets to compare two sheets and combine them in a specific way. Any help would be appreciated.
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
  1. My job requires me to run a report every week that produces an Excel sheet.
  2. This sheet always has the same columns when I pull it but new roles are added when new clients are added so the rows consistently change.
  3. I always add one column to new weekly spreadsheet when I pull it that is labeled "Priority". I then label each client as High, Low, and if I haven't gotten to it yet, it will be blank.
  4. Every week I have to compare the sheet from last week (i.e. Last Week's Sheet) with that added to the new one (i.e. New Week's Sheet) that typically will have more or less row additions.
GOAL
I want to be able to combine the two sheets (Last Week and New Week) into a third sheet that combines and leaves out certain information.
  1. I don't want to have double entries in the new sheet, just the information from Last Weeks Sheet if nothing has changed (e.g. if I have a row for Mr. John Smith and his details in Last Week's Sheet and he is also in the New Week Sheet because I haven't finished with him, I don't want to have two Mr. John Smiths with the same details in the new combined sheet.)
  2. I want the new sheet to have the Priority column that I added in the Last Week sheet and the data in those cells and have that data correspond with the right person (e.g. if I took the time to add a priority column and listed John Smith as high priority, I don't want to have to add that column and write down that John Smith is high priority and the rest of those rows because there's hundreds).

Please let me know if any of this makes sense and if you have any questions. Any help would be amazing. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

2024.05.15 18:08 Top-Bar3863 The straw that broke the camels back

Warning: profanity and descriptions of verbal abuse.
About five days ago now I (33F) made the decision to go no contact with my younger sister (30F). For the sake of this post, I’ll call her Amy.
Our parents say that Amy and I were really close when we were little. That it was common for them to go wake us up and find that Amy had snuck into my room and into my bed to snuggle with me at some point in the night. They said she looked up to me and that when our youngest sister (currently 27) was born that she was always at my elbow watching how I did things with the baby and then copying it. This is how things went for years.
Sometime around when I was 10, and Amy was 7, things started to change. She’d get mouthy and act out with any provocation or none at all. To the rest of the world she was a nice, normal kid but at home the mask came off. What started as annoying became a hassle became a nightmare as the years went by. My parents tried to address and correct her behavior at first but got worn down over time until my dad just avoided involvement whenever possible and my mom leaned more toward pacifying and damage control.
It’s no surprise that Amy and I’s relationship changed with me not really wanting to spend time with her that wasn’t mandated by our mom and things got worse as I entered my teen years and didn’t wanna play and hang out with my kid sisters, in general. I think it was around that time that she started getting mean and nasty. It wasn’t unusual for her to say things like “I hate you”, “I don’t love you” and whatever but she started getting cutthroat. She’d aim for whatever she thought would hurt you the most. She’d call you a bitch, a cunt (still one of her favs), say you’re stupid, worthless, a piece of shit, that no one likes you that they’re lying to you, that you’ll die miserable and alone, etc etc etc. She’d rant on and on for as long as she could keep the insults flowing. She’d also twist her version of events just enough to make herself look the victim. She had her door taken away several times cuz she kept slamming it. My poor mom took the brunt of Amy for years as that’s where she tended to point her poison and is still the one Amy targets the most.
Thankfully college brought me new friends, some of which also had complicated family relationships, and they helped me grow a back bone and taught me about boundaries and more. Amy was always nice when she wanted things from you but would turn ugly if you said no. Even if you agreed to help her, it wouldn’t stop her being nasty for some other reason. That behavior was where I drew my first boundary. “You can’t ask me for help and then be a dick to me. Do that and my help ends immediately.” Took a few times for the message to sink in, but it did. It was business as usual any normal time but she learned to be on good behavior while she was receiving help from me.
This pattern of verbal abuse, her blocking people for however long until she needed something, and her general unpleasantness pretty much continued as we went into our adult lives and she moved a few hundred miles away. When she was planning her wedding, we were threatened with having our invites rescinded constantly no matter if the topic had to do with the wedding or not. Now that she had a kid, continued access to said kid is the go-to ultimatum criteria for every occasion. Our parents have said that they’re afraid of letting themselves be too open to bond with her kid out of fear that they would grow that bond and then Amy would one day make good on her threats.
The kid is actually what brings us around to the breaking point. I had a kid of my own not long before she did so she bombarded me with questions and wants for advice all through her pregnancy. I’m not exaggerating when I say it was damn near daily. It got to the point I snapped at her that Google is a thing that exists and so is her doctor. Ask them. That got me yelled at and blocked for a while but silence was sweet. The questions continued after her kid was born but at least not as goddamned always.
A couple days ago, Amy started drama with the whole family centered around a crib our parents had set up for whenever the grandbabies come over. Amy demanded that our parents buy a brand new crib and that they had to do it by a certain date or she was never coming to visit and our parents would never see her kid again. She tried getting me on her side about it, tried to say she wasn’t demanding or giving ultimatums, and tried to read me the text she sent that started all this but I’d already seen the text and knew she was lying. She unleashed at me when I called her out before hanging up on me and sending a text saying that I was an “ignorant bitch” and “a shit fucking mother” and somehow there it was, the last straw.
I’m a shit mother? So that’s why my child is consistently meeting and even exceeding developmental milestones? Why the child care staff gush and say what a joy my child is? I’m so shit at being a mother that she made me her nearly exclusive source of parenting info?
After venting to my husband for a bit, I called my parents and youngest sister and told them what happened and what I’d decided to do about it. My mom tried to talk me out of it, saying it was just gonna set her off, but I reminded her that it’s not our responsibility to manage Amy’s actions and emotions. That’s her job and the entire reason why we are where we’re at.
I waited until the next day to write my response and then sent this:
“Amy,
I didn’t respond last night because I was tired of dealing with everything and wanted to make sure I did respond from a place that was more clear headed. I’m not surprised that you lashed out at me last night. It’s expected, it’s what you do. I don’t care that you called me a bitch. I don’t even care that you called me ignorant. What crossed the line for me was your attack on my motherhood. You aimed to hurt, as you always do with these attacks, so you went for what you thought would cut the deepest. Unfortunately for you, I know I’m a good mom. I see that truth in the beautiful, confident, intelligent, loving little kid I’m raising. I’ve seen it in the months of your pregnancy when you came to me with questions almost daily and in the months that followed when you’d have a question about once a week. I know I’m a good mom, and so do you, which is why your attack missed its target and hit an entirely different one. This behavior of lashing out at the smallest provocation and in the harshest most cutting way you can devise will not be something I continue to tolerate. It was unacceptable when we were kids and it’s even more unacceptable now as a grown adult. I don’t know why you think its ok to act this way. I don’t speak for the whole family, but for me and my family, there’s now going to be changes where you’re concerned. For the foreseeable future, you’re blocked. I will not give you the privilege of being in my life when you can’t be respectful. If you would like that privilege restored, and to have the opportunity for us to have a relationship again, then I need to see evidence that you are making the effort to manage negative emotions in a healthy and mature manner. How you go about that is your choice. My personal recommendation is that you start with how you treat the rest of our family.”
She’s been surprisingly quiet since then and my youngest sister says it might be that Amy blocked me and my message wasn’t delivered, but that’ll change at some point and I’ve told them they can forward my message along if it comes up.
I’m very much enjoying my new peace even if I also feel like I’m mourning the loss of my sister. I do love her. We were close once and she could actually be pretty caring and decent when she wasn’t being a raging bitch. I can only hope this is a wake up call for her.
