Final Prog Check then checkride soon after.
Hi people, I’ve been working on PPL for about 7 months total now (didn’t fly the whole month of January and half the month of February). I’m in an accelerated course now in San Diego headed all the way to CSEL. I’ve got a final check then checkride soon after. Quiz me..

2024.06.10 05:12 RobotMaster1 This song was my introduction to Lane 8 in 2018

This song was my introduction to Lane 8 in 2018
I think Spotify had suggested it or something. Anyway, I liked it so saved it. Then one day I was laying in bed in San Diego on a cool sunny afternoon with the windows open and a breeze coming in. My friend and I had sort of started dozing off post-adult fun. I had a playlist going and this song came on and I cannot really explain what I felt. It was sort of a floating, ethereal feeling of contentedness that only one other artist had ever evoked in me. I felt like I was dreaming and the song seemed to go on forever, which was great because I didn’t want it to end.
Anyway, what was yours?

2024.06.10 05:06 lundypup2020 Dry creek bed plantings

Dry creek bed plantings
Just created a dry creek bed in my front yard! What should I plant in it and where should I get it? I prefer seeds since I’ve got mostly small planting spaces.
San Diego County, zone 10a, 10 miles from the coast. West-facing, no morning sun, hot afternoon sun. Plenty of nooks and crannies that will hold moisture and shade. 18-24” wide at the widest, ~10-12’ long.
The current plantings surrounding it are Cleveland sage (Pozo blue), Pacific Mist manzanita, and Palmer’s Indian mallow.
For plantings, I’m thinking of blue-eyed grass (from seed)… aaand that’s all I’ve got. Need more ideas!
fyi, the smooth dirt to the left (pics 2-3) will be a mulch and flagstone path. No more plantings there.

2024.06.10 05:04 pjs91015 Considering buying the retirement home now. Should we?

Long time listener, first time poster! Let me know if I missed anything.
M53 and F42 married with 2 kids 7F and 4M. We live in CO. Have $1.1M in retirement, $659k investments. Home is $1M with $400k mortgage at 3%. Mountain house is $1.4M with $900k I/O mortgage at 6.8%. Each kid has $60k in 529 and we plan on adding another $30k to each this year. My wife and I run a consulting business and we make $500k-$750/year. Our expenses are around $200k/year.
Our goal is for me to work hard until 60 (I travel a lot) and then coast to cover our expenses until 70 so can spend more time with the family when the kids are in high school. My 7 year old is excited about this, lets see how that goes when she is 13 and I am around a lot more!
Our goal when I get to 70 is to sell our home and then have a place in the mountains and a place on the beach. We are looking at San Diego. We are thinking that if that is the plan we should go a head and buy the place now, and rent to out to cover as much expense as we can and use it occasionally. However that would take a big chunk of our investments as a down payment. Also we would need to take on another mortgage at around 7%. We could wait a few years until we have more saved, but then the prices will just be higher.
Thanks of the advice and let me know what else I should share.

2024.06.10 04:54 VortexFalcon50 I HATE most delivery/rideshare drivers

Before anyone gets all offended, I know there are good ones out there and not all delivery drivers are bad, which especially may be true outside of my locale. I live in San Francisco, and ride a motorcycle as my daily driver. 9/10 times when im nearly hit or held up in traffic, it’s because of a delivery or rideshare driver. Now, drivers in SF are bad to begin with, but these delivery drivers are by FAR the worst. They turn abruptly with no signals, slow down and throw on their hazards in the middle of a major road, and block traffic. There’s a papa johns down the street from me, and 24/7 theres at least 10-15 cars and bikes lined up double parked on both sides of the 3 lane street, leaving a thin passage between. They sit there waiting for orders and make traffic hell in that section. I see this happen constantly all across the city, where drivers just sit double parked waiting for pickup orders. Its just lazy and rude behavior, and the police do nothing about it. They also just drive like absolute muppets, and endanger me literally on the daily. Now, theres a new class of dangerous idiot, the bike delivery driver. They always either have a scooter or a crappy rented ebike. They love riding on sidewalks, darting out from between cars, and pulling up next to you so close you can feel the heat from their engine. Almost every day when I’m stopped at a light, some scooter rider comes and pulls up inches away from me then revvs their engine like a muppet. Sure, it may be curiosity about my bike considering I ride an electric motorcycle, but its still annoying. Aside from their abysmal driving, they all seem to have zero regard for others and no courtesy whatsoever. I have a restaurant in my apartment building whose door is in the same foyer as the lobby, and these delivery drivers love to just hang out in the doorway and block the entry to my house. I say “excuse me” multiple times until they look up from their phones and notice im trying to get past them. Today as I was picking up some taco bell on my lunch break, the delivery drivers were all crowded around the pickup window 3-4 people deep on every side. I couldnt even come up to grab my order so I went inside, which im really not supposed to do for pickup. Then, taco bell serves all the delivery drivers before even asking for my order details. In addition, most of them have not a single working braincell in their skulls. I work front desk security for an office building. We share an address with a tea shop, who’s entrance is very clearly about 20 feet down from our entrance. I have delivery drivers ringing the intercom asking for the tea shop, when they could literally just look to their left and see it plain as day. Since I said I have a restaurant in my building, one time when I was exiting the lobby a delivery driver comes walking up and shoves his phone in my face with pickup order details. How he couldn’t recognize that this is an apartment building lobby and not a restaurant, I have no clue. Apparently using your skills of deduction is too much work. That brings me to another point. Having worked in retail where we accept delivery orders for products, drivers have zero communication skills. Yes, many of them may not speak good english, but learning a simple “hello i have an order to pick up” isnt that hard. Instead, they just rudely shove their phones in my face without saying a single word. I just seriously cant stand the behavior of delivery and rideshare drivers. Total muppets.

2024.06.10 04:44 AZonmymind Arizona in San Diego

I was watching the Dbacks play the Padres today and thinking about spending summers in San Diego to escape the Arizona heat as a kid. Also, realizing that I haven't been there in 7 or 8 years as we've gone other places on our summer vacations instead.
How many of us grew up spending summers in San Diego and how many still do?

2024.06.10 04:31 asdftyper transfer to NYU math or stay at UCSD cog sci ml

Hi, I'm considering transferring schools to NYU Courant, which is top 1 for applied math graduate studies, but from what I've read is just alright for undergraduate. Currently I'm at the end of my first year. If I go to NYU I would be doing applied math for a B.A, here I'm doing a B.S. Some people say that it doesn't make much of a difference. I’m not sure. At UCSD I'll graduate in 2 years exactly. At NYU it'll be another 3-3.5 years. Cost/tuition isn't a concern.
I love big cities like New York and Los Angeles. San Diego is beautiful but, in my personal experience, it feels a lot like a giant suburb with much less opportunity.
I've heard that cog sci, even with specialization, is too general and not specific enough. But I am very interested in the topic (although I could probably self-study a lot of what I'm interested in). Then again, I kinda want more in-depth, practical skills out of college. I'm not very familiar with applied math, but the future direction I want to go in is AI.

ODT to 101 or ACA route through Washington for my Pacific coast bike ride?
Riding from Washington to San Diego June 19. Still haven’t decided whether I’ll be taking the ODT to the 101 or the ACA route through Washington. Can someone with previous route knowledge tell me the pros and cons of these separate routes? Excited to hopefully meet some of y’all on this bike ride.
