SE06 Pro Firmware update?
It came with 1.8 which is good. Trying to see if I can (or need) to update to what is on their site. Everything looks the same except the last 6 digit number. Mine is older maybe? In any case I upload the file to the router and hit system upgrade but it fails everytime. Is it because I'm trying to update to the same version it already has? Those last digits make me think it is different in some way.

2024.04.27 23:21 rennitz Windows 11 mandating a password I didn't set

I should start with this is on my mother's computer and I have no idea what she does with it. She did say that she received a pop-up about having a trojan which I was going to look into today. However, as per the title of this thread, she is now locked out of windows vis a vis a password neither she nor the aunt of mine who built the computer set.
I've seen other reddit posts saying it's the Hotmail password or things like that but I've gone through mom's Big Book of Passwords and haven't found one that works. I've tried rewinding to the last update, I've even formatted the machine and reinstalled windows with no luck. I can't reset the password because I don't have a password reset disk. I've also tried booting in safe mode but it still wants the password.
Tl;dr- mom got herself locked out of her computer. How can I bypass the password or restore the computer to when it didn't have one?

2024.03.14 02:53 shiawase198 Not sure if email is a scam or not.

Sorry if this doesn't belong here.
I got this email yesterday regarding my ex-gf's email. When we dated, she used my email for the security/backup email.

Microsoft account
Security info replacement remider (it was misspelled like this)
Your security info for "ex-gf's email.hotmail" is pending replacement with "ex-gf's new email@yahoo" on 2024/03/29 2:17 (JST).
If this was you, click the button below to bypass the waiting period by using your existing security info.
If this wasn't you, someone else might be trying to take over "ex-gf's email.hotmail" Click here and we'll help you protect this account.
If you don't recognize the Microsoft account "ex-gf's email.hotmail", you can click here to remove your email address from that account.
Thanks, The Microsoft account team
Privacy Statement (linked)
Microsoft Corporation, One Microsoft Way, Redmond, WA 98052
The email was sent from:
account- security- noreply@ accountprotection. microsoft. com (minus the spaces)
It looks mostly legit aside from them misspelling reminder at the top. The first email used asterisks to cover up the actual email aside from the first two and last letter and the new email sounds like something she would use so I think both of them are in fact her.
We haven't talked in 8 years so it's kind of awkward for me to reach out and talk to her just about this even if we had an amicable break-up so I'm just wondering what the best option is here. Should I just wait and let it take care of itself on the 29th or should I click on the link from the 3rd option to remove my email from her account? Or is this a scambait?

Discover the Secrets of Hotmail Captcha and learn how to solve it!

Understanding the Purpose and Function
In the dynamic landscape of digital communication, email security is paramount, and Hotmail, now Outlook.com, stands at the forefront of protecting user accounts from unauthorized access and spam. One crucial element contributing to this security is the Hotmail Captcha.
Evolution of Hotmail Captcha:
Hotmail Captcha, or Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart, has evolved over the years to meet the increasing challenges posed by automated bots. Initially, it began as a simple distorted text that users needed to decipher. However, with advancements in technology, Hotmail implemented more sophisticated methods to enhance security.
Visual and Text-Based Challenges:
Hotmail Captcha often presents users with visual challenges, such as selecting specific objects from images or deciphering distorted text. These challenges leverage human cognitive abilities, making it difficult for automated bots to bypass this crucial security checkpoint.
Preventing Unauthorized Access:
The primary purpose of Hotmail Captcha is to prevent unauthorized access to email accounts. By distinguishing between human users and automated bots, it adds an extra layer of security during the login process. This ensures that only legitimate users with the ability to solve the Captcha puzzle can access their Hotmail accounts.
Combating Spam:
In addition to protecting against unauthorized access, Hotmail Captcha plays a pivotal role in combating spam. Automated bots often attempt to create numerous fake email accounts for malicious purposes, and the Captcha challenges act as a deterrent, making it more challenging for these bots to succeed.
Enhancing User Experience:
While security is the primary focus, Hotmail Captcha is designed to offer a user-friendly experience. The challenges are crafted to be solvable by humans within a reasonable time, ensuring that legitimate users can access their accounts without significant inconvenience.
Adaptability to Technological Advances:
As technology continues to advance, so does the sophistication of cyber threats. Hotmail Captcha adapts to these changes, incorporating advanced techniques to stay ahead of automated bots and malicious actors. This adaptability ensures that users can trust Hotmail as a secure platform for their email communication.
Conclusion:
Hotmail Captcha is an integral part of the defense mechanism employed by Outlook.com to safeguard user accounts and ensure the integrity of email communication. Through visual and text-based challenges, it effectively distinguishes between humans and automated bots, preventing unauthorized access and mitigating the impact of spam. As technology evolves, Hotmail Captcha remains a robust guardian, reinforcing the security of millions of email accounts worldwide.
CaptchaAI is characterized by 99.99% accuracy in solving all types of Normal Captcha, including Hotmail Captcha, as it solved Hotmail Captcha in one second. This is what distinguishes it from other alternatives that took a minimum of 6 seconds to solve and a maximum of 15 seconds as well, so Captchaai was a distinctive and successful choice.

2023.10.24 14:33 TheManInOz Push sync Hotmail into Gmail app

I tried searching online for help on this. It used to be that you could setup the Gmail app to sync a Hotmail account using Push sync, rather than IMAP. Using the default method for Hotmail would cause it to be added using IMAP, and selecting Exchange would display "Can't reach server". And today I got it working. Posting this as a PSA if you are getting the same.
Thanks to this article for the server address: support.microsoft.com

First you need to go into your Microsoft account > Security, and setup an App password. Store this somewhere safe.

Then in Gmail app > Add another account > Exchange and Office 365 > Type your email address then press 'Set up manually' instead of Next > Enter the App password you created earlier into the password field, Domain\Username is your email address, Server is eas.outlook.com, Port is 443, Security type is SSL/TLS > Click Next > Profit. Appears in Settings > Accounts as an Exchange account, and receives mail instantly.

I'm not sure what's wrong with Gmail app using Modern authentication with Hotmail, but I just get the "Can't reach server" error. To use a simple password and bypass Modern auth you need to use an App password. This is on Android 14 Gmail app 2023.10.08.572379699

In the ever-evolving landscape of the digital realm, email services have become an integral part of our daily lives. Hotmail, now known as Outlook, has been a popular choice for millions of users worldwide. However, like all things on the internet, it has its set of security measures, one of which is the Hotmail Captcha. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into the role of Hotmail Captcha and explore the methods to bypass it.

Understanding Hotmail Captcha

Before we delve into the methods of bypassing Hotmail Captcha, let's first understand what it is and why it exists. Captcha, short for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart, serves as a security feature to differentiate between human users and automated bots.

The Purpose of Hotmail Captcha

Hotmail Captcha serves several essential purposes:
  • Spam Prevention: It acts as a barrier against automated scripts and bots attempting to create fake email accounts and send spam emails.
  • Account Security: Captcha adds an extra layer of security to Hotmail accounts, protecting them from unauthorized access or brute-force attacks.
  • Data Privacy: By identifying and blocking automated programs, it helps safeguard user data and privacy.

Bypassing Hotmail Captcha: The Controversy

While Hotmail Captcha is a necessary security measure, some legitimate users may encounter issues with it. This leads to a legitimate concern: how to bypass Hotmail Captcha when it poses an obstacle for genuine users.

Legitimate Reasons to Bypass Hotmail Captcha

There are instances where bypassing Hotmail Captcha is not an attempt to engage in malicious activities but rather a necessity. Some legitimate reasons include:
  • Accessibility: Users with disabilities may face difficulties in completing Captcha, and bypassing it can ensure equal access to email services.
  • Technical Glitches: Occasionally, Hotmail Captcha may not load correctly or present an impossible challenge due to technical glitches.
  • Account Recovery: When users need to recover their accounts, Captcha can become an obstacle, and bypassing it can facilitate the recovery process.

Methods to Bypass Hotmail Captcha

Now, let's explore some methods to bypass Hotmail Captcha under legitimate circumstances:

1. Contact Hotmail Support

Hotmail's support team can be reached to address any issues related to Captcha. They may provide assistance or temporary solutions to your specific case.

2. Use Accessibility Features

Hotmail offers accessibility features, such as audio Captcha for users with visual impairments. These features can be used to bypass visual Captcha challenges.

3. Adjust Browser Settings

Sometimes, browser settings or extensions may interfere with Captcha loading. Disabling certain extensions or adjusting settings may resolve the issue.

4. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies

Clearing your browser's cache and cookies can help in bypassing Captcha by ensuring a clean session.

5. Automated Solvers

There are automated Captcha solving services and tools available that can bypass Hotmail Captcha automatically. These services utilize advanced algorithms to recognize and solve Captcha challenges quickly.
Incorporating automated solvers into the process can streamline the Captcha-solving experience for users facing difficulties, making it more convenient while still adhering to legitimate reasons for bypassing Hotmail Captcha.

The Balance Between Security and Accessibility

In conclusion, Hotmail Captcha plays a vital role in safeguarding email accounts and data privacy. While its purpose is paramount, it's essential to find a balance between security and accessibility for legitimate users. By understanding the reasons to bypass Captcha and the methods to do so, you can navigate the digital realm more effectively while preserving your privacy and security.

2023.08.31 08:10 EasePure3305 Recovering an account is a joke

Recovering an outlook/Hotmail account is an absolute joke compared to anything else. Why am I given a login security option to either use my secondary email to prove the account is mine or use the authenticator if when I pick the secondary email option I have to use the authenticator (that doesn't exist in the first place) anyway?????
Then I go to my main account and sign in (again for like the 5th time at this point having to put my authenticator in AGAIN even after I've checked the box to trust this device every single time I've logged in).... To get an email from Microsoft telling me I can bypass the recovery time of 30 days by clicking a link they've sent in that email to change my security options.... But wait that link takes you to the account you're already signed into! Nothing to do with the account you're trying to recover.
On top of that I got so tired of putting my authenticator I just disabled it on the one I actually have access to but when I try to login IT STILL ASKS ME FOR AN AUTHENTICATOR!!!
GMail here I come.

2023.04.07 18:56 Onlyhereforthelaughs What is the point of reporting spam email if the addresses are all unique?!

My ancient hotmail account has been plagued with spam for years, I easily get 50 emails a day, and most of them end up in the spam filter, but not all of them, and actual important emails also like to slip into the spam filter as well, meaning I am forced to look through the spam emails anyway.
I've tried complaining to Microsoft, and they assure me that the best course is to report the emails as phishing/spam, but tell me, what is the point of doing that when each email address they use is uniquely generated? Even the domain names get jumbled up to easily avoid such filtering.
It's like blocking a spam number when you get called by a new number each day. You are achieving literally nothing, because that first number wasn't likely to call you again anyway, but now you have this scar, a blocked number forever in your account, crowding your contact list. And you're going to do this every day?
I don't even know how many email addresses I've blocked now. Since I've basically considered this address a lost cause, I even tried using the unsubscribe links at the bottoms of the spam emails, because really, what have I got to lose? I know they're lying, it's not a real unsubscribe link, if anything it's probably signing me up for more when I enter my email address, confirming there is a person there that is annoyed by spam.
There's just no end to it, and I see no way to end it other than closing the account entirely.
It would be nice if they introduced some sort of email reputation score, (Like on Imgur when if you don't have enough points on your account, you aren't allowed to message other users directly, which really only becomes a problem during the Secret Santa season, so you'll see posts pop up where people are trying to get the prerequisite points in order to message their match.) where you could set a required score before a rando could email you from outside your contact list, but I'm sure the spammers would find a way to artificially grow their score to bypass it.

2023.04.04 23:46 HaileDk Hacked and locked out of my account. Appeals gets denied.

Hello! I feel I have tried everything and have now run out of options, so I turn to you guys!
The last 2 days I have been trying to get acces to my account, but so far I haven't been able to. I was able to access my account on the 2nd of April, but the next day I was locked out and I don't know what to do. This is an account I have had since 2004 when I first started playing Runescape.
When I try to reset my password using my username, I don't receive the "Password reset" email as you would normally do. This would indicate that somehow someone has been able to change the associated email for my account.
If I try to reset my password using the email I normally use, I get the "Password reset" email as normal, but this gave me access to an old account which I created back when I got into playing OSRS. This account I haven't played for 2937 days and was only an account I played until I got access to my old 2004 account. Later I set my 2004 account up using the same mail.
I have only ever have 2 emails associated with my account, both of whom I still have access to. On the 2nd. of april during the evening I have received 2 emails on each email account. On my old hotmail account I found a mail "Your email address change was successful" in my spam folder. This may claim that the registered email for my account has been changed into [ottpasakott9@icloud.com](mailto:ottpasakott9@icloud.com), an email I have no association to. This email was received 11:50PM. On my gmail account (which is the one I usually use for my account) I have received an "Reset your Jagex password" email with legit link to resetting my password. This email was received 11:20PM and was not something I myself have requested.
I have checked the login activity on both emails, and from I can see, no other IP's/devices have accessed either of my emails in the last month. Furthermore I have setup 2FA on my Runescape account, which I guess is also somehow bypassed.
I have now filled out 3 account recovery appeals containing all the information that would verify that I am the rightful owner of my account (Recovery questions, very old membership transaction info etc.) but so far they have been denied (still waiting on an answer on my last one). I have way more info, but the 300 char limit prevents me from adding everything.
So yeah, thats the story. Do any of you have any suggestions on how someone might have gotten access to my account and bypassed the 2FA? I have seen several other Reddit threads describing the same issue: https://www.reddit.com/2007scape/comments/11lxhgq/got_hacked_for_16b/
https://www.reddit.com/2007scape/comments/11ki382/authenticator_broken/
https://www.reddit.com/2007scape/comments/11lf7fl/hacked/
https://www.reddit.com/2007scape/comments/11kr70w/how_can_i_contact_jagex_support/
https://www.reddit.com/2007scape/comments/11kynh3/account_hacked_for_1b_looking_to_see_how_theyve/
But these date back almost a month.
Also, do you guys have any suggestions on how to contact Jagex other than the account recovery appeal form? I can see that I have been in contact with Jagex support back in 2015 when starting OSRS, where Mod Daniel C helped me getting access to my account again. But it does not seem to be possible to do that anymore..
Thanks in advance!

2023.02.24 12:51 Bond_Dr Crime Blog #41

Oleg Zezev tried to steal confidential information belonging to Bloomberg L.P. and its customers. Bloomberg L.P. is a multinational financial data company that provides its customers in the international financial community with timely financial information and trading data through a computer network. Zezev then used that information to threaten Bloomberg's founder, Michael Bloomberg, that if he did not pay him $200,000, he would disclose this information to Bloomberg's customers and the media in an effort to harm Bloomberg's reputation. Zezev was the chief information technology officer at Kazkommerts Securities (Kazkommerts) located in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The e-mail came from an e-mail account at a company called Hotmail that Zezev had registered under a false name. The e-mail was traced back to Kazkommerts Securities, where Zezev worked. After receiving the first e-mail, Bloomberg computer specialists were able to piece together how Zezev had broken in and rewrote the software on the Bloomberg system to prevent him from accessing the system again.
In the spring of 1999, Bloomberg provided database services to Kazkommerts. As a result, Kazkommerts was provided with Bloomberg's software to gain access to Bloomberg's services over the Internet. Bloomberg canceled those services in 1999 because Kazkommerts did not pay its bill.
In March 2000, Zezev manipulated Bloomberg's software to bypass Bloomberg's security system in order to gain unauthorized access to Bloomberg's computer system so that he could pose as different legitimate Bloomberg customers and employees. On 11 separate occasions during March 2000, Zezev illegally entered Bloomberg's computer system and accessed various accounts, including Michael Bloomberg's personal account as well as accounts for other Bloomberg employees and customers. Zezev copied information from these accounts, including e-mail inbox screens, Michael Bloomberg's credit card numbers, and screens relating to internal functions of Bloomberg. He also copied internal information from Bloomberg that was accessible only by Bloomberg employees.
According to the evidence at trial on March 24, 2000, Zezev sent Michael Bloomberg an e-mail from Kazakhstan using the alias "Alex," attaching various screens he had copied from Bloomberg's computer system demonstrating his ability to enter the system as any user. He then asked for payment and threatened: "There a lot of clever but mean heads in the world who will use their chance to destroy your system to the detriment of your worldwide reputation."
Zezev sent an e-mail on April 17 to Bloomberg threatening that if he did not send Zezev $200,000, he would disclose to the media and Bloomberg's customers that he was able to gain unauthorized access to Bloomberg's computer system.
Michael Bloomberg, acting in conjunction with FBI agents, sent Zezev e-mails saying that if Zezev wanted the money, he would have to meet with him and some of Bloomberg's computer specialists in London and explain to them how he was able to break into Bloomberg's computer system.
Zezev traveled from London to meet with Bloomberg. On August 10, 2000, Michael Bloomberg, Tom Secunda, the head of technology at Bloomberg, and a British undercover agent posing as Bloomberg's bodyguard met with Zezev and Yarimaka, an associate of Zezev, in London. The meeting was recorded by undercover videotape. At the meeting, Zezev introduced himself as "Alex." Michael Bloomberg told Zezev that he was extorting his company. Zezev was arrested after the meeting and subsequently extradited from England to the United States to face the charges in the indictment.
On February 26, 2003, Zezev was convicted, after a three-and-a half-week jury trial in U.S. District Court, on all counts of a four-count indictment charging him with crimes arising from his scheme to hack into Bloomberg L.P.'s computer system: conspiracy to commit extortion, attempted extortion, sending extortionate threats, and computer intrusion. Zezev was sentenced in Manhattan federal court to four years in prison.

2023.01.05 23:20 M4rkt How to send large files via Gmail without Google Drive

How to send large files via Gmail without Google Drive

How to send big attachments via email for FREE With ( LargeFileSender.io)

LargeFileSender.io
Emails are used for professional purposes (sending and receiving documents), not for sending large files over the internet; for this reason and many others, there is a limit on the size of attachments. Back in the day, the limit was only 5–10 megabytes in total and 10 megabytes maximum for each attachment. Nowadays, the maximum can reach 25MB of attached file such as with Gmail.
With Gmail if the attachment file exceeds 25MB

Why there is a limit on the size of the email?

  • There is often an arbitrarily set limit on the size of emails that users can submit through mail systems.
  • Also, you can’t email large files because the message will often pass through several mail transfer agents before reaching its destination. Messages must be stored before being forwarded, so they may also have a maximum size.
  • Emails with attachments over a certain size may be rejected by the recipient’s mail system.
  • For security reasons, all email server providers limit the maximum email size that an email account can receive. Else, with no maximum email size limit, the email server would risk receiving very large emails.

How to bypass Gmail size limit or other Email Services?

1- By Simply Compress the Files you are going to Send but this is only for Files that are not very Large.Gmail will Automatically redirect you to Google Drive but there is a Storage Limitation you should exceed.
2- LargeFileSender.io : Send Unlimited Large Files Quickly.

Largefilesender.io

  • LargeFileSender.io Is Completely For free, and without registering an account, you can send files up to 30GB , and even more; there’s no limit to how often you can use the service either. You can either send large files directly via email or generate a link which you can share elsewhere, Protect your file with a Password , Track and get notifcation when your file is Downloaded .You dont need to Worry about any sizes or Storage Limitation with LargefileSender.io

3- Outlook/Hotmail allows sending files up to a maximum size of 33 MB. More than this Size , user will be redirected to upload attachments to OneDrive that exceeds 33MB and send the link via email. The main Problem here that we have a limit that OneDrive have also limitation in Storage Capacity, only 5gb for free!!

4- Use Dropbox. Same as Google drive and OneDrive, you upload files and share the link with the receiver. Same as Google drive and One drive, Dropbox only offers 2gb of free storage which is too small to meet our needs. And doesn't help to send large files via email attachments.
Conclusion

To be Able to send large files via emails or any where or just to share large files with some colleagues or coworkers it wont be an issue any more as there are so many alternative ways to bypass emails size limitations .

2022.12.09 00:51 Pleasehelpmelol-2022 Can no longer

I can no longer log in to my Hotmail after I changed ISP's. I changed my ISP to Starlink, and now I can no longer log in. They want me to verify even though I'm the same person.
Before you tell me to "verify" myself in the comments, I cannot. I do not have a code and they're asking me to verify myself even on my backup account as well. No matter what Hotmail I'm trying to log into, I can't. How do I actually bypass this?

2022.12.08 20:11 yellowriverjeep Google Play signed me out and forced me into using gmail.

I've been an android user for over 10 years. When I got my first smartphone, I used my Hotmail account and it used that email to sign into Google Play and then all my apps.
Yesterday I created a new Gmail for work and after verifying my identity, went about my day. It was later when I went to use my calendar all my entries were gone.
I was only signed in with my Gmail and no longer my Hotmail when I went to go check my settings.
I used my Hotmail for my YouTube and other things that I pay subscriptions for. And it won't let me add my Hotmail account on the app because it is a Google app. Only Gmail accounts are recognized.
How can I fix this? Is there a way to bypass all this or am I going to have to cancel subscriptions and bend the knee and do everything through a Gmail?
I've tried contacting support and they just send me to a community forum that no one has responded to.

2022.09.09 06:00 apukjij Microsoft take over.

Microsoft has labeled Mailfence a security threat. When I logged in to Mailfence, I was worried about the Microsoft Red Page warning. So I bypassed the security warnings and logged into Mailfence I navigated to the Enter Settings Page, but I couldn't . WHILE LOGGED INTO MAILFENCE SETTINGS AND TRYING TO CHANGE THOSE SETTINGS > THE MICROSOFT RED PAGE ERROR STOPPED ME FROM CHANGING SETTINGS WHILE IM LOGGED IN. I tried to switch the page to my account settings tab instead and I COULD NOT ENTER MY ACCT SETTING PAGE ON MAILFENCE WITHOUT A MICROSOFT RED PAGE ERROR, THATS IT! I DELETED MY MAILFENCE ACCOUNT AND YOU SHOULD TOO. Ffs I have been using email for 30 years since Hotmail started and I have never had the Email IP prevent me from entering the settings of my Email Settings and had Microsoft Red Page errors. There is something seriously wrong and you should all delete your acct.

2022.08.21 01:00 gffdgrfdsva How do I bypass this Two-Factor Authentication Required

So I have an Facebook account that got hacked, the hacker changed my primary email address to an hotmail one that's not mine, I tried logging in with my phone number and password and it just takes me to this page everytime, then I click on Need another way to authenticate?, and then I see a list of different IDs to submit to verify my identity, then I select I don't have any of these, and then it asks me to upload two photos of different types of IDs, and everytime I do that Facebook automatic systems keep rejecting them and I get this email here everytime.

And my photo is not blurry, not too dark, not missing the required information, not taken from a screenshot or a photo copied ID, and is properly visible with all four corners in the frame.

And it does contain my name and photo and date of birth, so there should be no reason Facebook should be rejecting it. Why can't they just accept my ID and give me back my account already so I can be through with this nonsense? This just wastes my time and makes it hard for me when I do this and they keep rejecting it over and over again. What does Facebook want? I've did this a thousand times already, just give me back my account, or is there any other way to bypass this Two-Factor Authentication Required nonsense?
I've seen some forums here on reddit where people say contact an Attorney General about this and they can help get the account back, so do I just send an email to [disaster-counsel@oag.texas.gov](mailto:disaster-counsel@oag.texas.gov) and explain my issue to them, maybe they'll help get my account back? Let me know!

UPDATE: My account is back, see post here.

2022.03.28 18:02 billhartzer How to Protect Your Domain Name

As you may (or may not) know, DNProtect protects domain names, offers a domain name protection service, but also recover stolen domain names.
Unfortunately recovering domain names takes up quite a bit of our time, as it's a huge problem that no one talks about. People are literally waking up in the morning, their email doesn't work, their website is down, and they quickly realize that their domain name has been stolen. DNProtect is the ONLY company that currently offers a service to recover domain names.
Your domain name is your most important asset. If you lose it, your website is down, email doesn't work. And if you're selling stuff online or you're getting your leads that way, it can be a HUGE hit to your business. Your business STOPS instantly if you lose your domain name.
I am flabbergasted, to say the least, that people have less security on their domain name(s) than they do on their websites. They pay a domain registrar the least possible for domain registration services. And don't pay attention to their domain name. But one mistake can literally take away your business overnight.
I see this happening over and over again, several times a day, because I personally help people recover their stolen domain names. It's tough to see someone desperate to get their domain name back after it's stolen, and I never want to see YOU in this situation. Frankly, I do not want to ever have to talk to you about your stolen domain name.
So, here's some things that I have learned after recovering a LOT of stolen domain names for clients. These are things that are easy to do, and things that I wish my clients had done so they wouldn't be hiring me to recover their stolen domain. Do these right now, today. And please share this with everyone you can, as I know that there are so many people out there that have no idea that stolen domain names are a big problem.
Set up 2FA (two-factor authentication) whenever it's offered to you by your domain registrar. If they don't offer it, transfer your domain name to another registrar.
If you are going to use 2FA, consider adding a physical key to that process. You can get a Yubikey inexpensively and add that to the 2FA process. Hackers won't have the physical Yubikey, so they cannot gain access to your account. Google offers Google Advanced Protection, so you may consider adding that if you use a Google Account for access to a Google Account (Google Domains).
I recommend setting up 2FA when you can, but people need to realize that it is NOT foolproof. Hackers routinely turn 2FA off when stealing domains. The 2FA that uses an app like Authy or Authenticator (an authenticator app) is better than simply getting an email with a code. SMS text message with a code is better than an email code, but that can be bypassed easily by hackers as well, and I've seen hackers steal domains with the SMS text message 2FA turned on.
Turn on registry lock if it's offered. It is different than registrar lock. This basically makes it more difficult to make changes to the domain, especially name server changes. It's just another level of protection, but can be turned off by the hacker.
Register the domain for at least 5 years in advance. If it's stolen or transferred there will be no question as to whether or not it simply expired. I've run into this over and over again when recovering domains. We can easily rule out expiration since it was registered for a few years in advance (easy to see via whois history).
Do NOT rely on "auto renewal", as we constantly hear from people who lose their domains because auto renewal was turned on and their credit card was "supposed to be" charged. And it was not. (Credit card didn't go through, etc.).
Never use a "free email" such as gmail, hotmail, outlook, etc. as the contact email on the domain. Those accounts routinely get hacked, compromised, etc..
Make sure that you don't ever use the same email address of the domain. For example, in the whois record of hartzer(.com), don't use bill@hartzer(.com). If it's a stolen domain, there will be issues recovering the domain. And you cannot gain access to the domain easily if the domain is using the same domain that has been stolen. If the domain is stolen you won't have access to email on that domain. So you cannot easily communicate with your registrar or with me, who is trying to recover your domain name for you.
If you use another email address in your WHOIS record, as recommended, make sure you RENEW that domain name as well. If the domain with that email address expires, then the domain thief just has to get access to that domain name with that email and they can steal your other domain name, as well as any other domain names using that email address in the WHOIS record. That's how AirBNB had Tilt.com stolen from them. They had an email address @customtilt.com in the WHOIS record, and someone bought customtilt.com and then stole tilt.com from AirBNB. So, don't do that.
Finally, consider NOT using whois privacy on domains you really care about. Use a UPS Store address if you have to. But don't use whois privacy. When it comes down to recovering the domain, when you have to prove ownership, it's a lot easier if you have not used whois privacy on the domain. Domain thieves will immediately turn on privacy when they gain access to the domain, then they will attempt to transfer the domain out.
There are other ways to make sure that you don't get your domain name stolen and don't have to use DNProtect to recover your stolen domain name. But I won't reveal all of those since I don't want to give any extra hints to hackers and domain name thieves on how to steal domain names. If you do the above things, you're going to have a lot less risk than before. And, of course if you're interested in protecting your domain name(s), check your DNP Score for free at DNProtect.com and get your domain risk score as high as you can.
