BNN invited Ab Klink to come onto the show and discuss what the government had done to solve the crisis. But he turned them down. In a poll conducted before the show aired, it was found that 61% of the Dutch population disapproved of the show. Interestingly enough, younger people approved of it much more than older people (44% of under 25s said they would watch it vs 13% of over 65s).
The Dutch Kidney Foundation welcomed the attention that the show had brought to the organ donor issue in the Netherlands, but said that “"their way of doing it is not ours, and it will bring no practical solution". However, the negative attention the show received, made them reach out and ask BNN to stop using their logo in the title of the show. BNN had not asked them for permission and had gone ahead and used their 2007 logo to replace the “o” in the word “show”.
The show aired on the first of June 2007. At the beginning of the broadcast, the presenter, Patrick Lodiers, highlighted the dramatic criticism the show had received, and at the end, he announced that the whole thing was a hoax.

Every-body calm down: The Backlash
The shows announcement was quickly met with both international and national outrage, from politicians, television critics, and medical professionals. Dutch embassies were flooded with complaints . Even the Dutch prime minister at the time, Jan Peter Balkenende, criticised the show, saying it would damage the reputation of the Netherlands. Some Dutch politicians even called for the program to be banned:CDA MP Joop Atsma wants to see if BNN’s Big Donor Show can be banned.Ronald Plasterk weighed in on the situation::
Atsma hopes that BNN will come to repentance. "The fence is with this program of the dam. A careful medical assessment is thus passed. What are people in the program judged? - On their color? - In their gender? To their sexual orientation?”
Atsma calls Minister Ab Klink (CDA) of Health and Minister of Culture Ronald Plasterk (PvdA) Tuesday to the Question Time in the Chamber. “I want to know if we can ban the program. There is a good chance that it will go against the law. I want to explain if there is a difference in selling an organ to the highest bidder.”
"The intention of the programme to get more attention for organ donation may be applaudable," said Dutch Education and Culture Minister Ronald Plasterk.In the end, the government announced that they wouldn’t ban the program, because there was no basis under the law for them to do so.
"However based on the information I now have, the programme appears to me to be inappropriate and unethical because it is a competition," said Plasterk, who is a molecular biologist and former chief of the Dutch Cancer Institute.

Esther-Clair Sasabone also acts as an ambassador for the theme of kidney disease. With Moolenaar she founded Bureau Sterrenstof, an organization that she now leads alone and with which she supports chronically ill children. “I can go through that in length of years. We have been friends for 7 years kaso when her jowa entered the picture, I was abandoned. Was it my fault? Part of it I admit. Kasi there are times that I took her for granted before e. I am just realizing it now. How bad of a friend I am. Kasi may mga panahon na kailangan nya ko, pero wala ako sa tabi nya e. I can't give her the bare minimum that time. Pero pag kinailangan ko sya never sya naghesitate sakin which is the opposite pag sya na nangailangan, sometimes I just can't be there personally to comfort her. I am so dumb to just realized it now. But yeah, as I have said part of it lang was my fault for our ruined friendship. I know I have my lackings and shortcomings as a friend. Pero immature pa kasi ko nun. Sobrang laking part nya sakin. Before kasi kahit konting kibot, alam nya e. And this, going out of the country for years, is a big thing. So I wanted to at least inform her and make amends before I go. Sya lang yung kaibigan ko e, umasa ako na magiging ok pa kami and that I will have someone to talk to again pag nasa far away na ko, just like the old times. Because I missed those. Meron akong best friend. Para kaming magkapatid non. Kambal pa nga ang sabi. Kasi pati sa looks, we are the same. We have been friends for 7 years kaso when her jowa entered the picture, I was abandoned. Was it my fault? Part of it I admit. Kasi there are times that I took her for granted before e. I am just realizing it now. How bad of a friend I am. Kasi may mga panahon na kailangan nya ko, pero wala ako sa tabi nya e. I can't give her the bare minimum that time. Pero pag kinailangan ko sya never sya naghesitate sakin which is the opposite pag sya na nangailangan, sometimes I just can't be there personally to comfort her. I am so dumb to just realized it now. But yeah, as I have said part of it lang was my fault for our ruined friendship. I know I have my lackings and shortcomings as a friend. Pero immature pa kasi ko nun. It may have been an issue or a factor kaya nasira kami pero that is not the main reason. What really drifted us apart is yung jowa nya. Sinuportahan ko naman sya sa mga gusto nya. So I wanted to at least inform her and make amends before I go. Till they found out that I can understand and somehow speak Ilocano.
I was friends with the person they're talking to and I responded in a sincere manner but my response stunned them as if they saw a ghost. Turns out I've never told them I can speak (understand) Ilocano. It was an awkward moment.

Hello friends,
I am logging into nosurf because I've not been here for a while, and I promised that if I successfully managed to go no-surf, or at least low-surf, I would tell you all about it and what helped me.
I got my new phone a little over 3 months ago (February 8th) and gave my iPhone to my stepson, though I warned him it would not improve his life, at least it saved him some money. The phone I bought was a Qin F22 Pro, which although a full-on Android capable device, has a very small screen, making it incredibly annoying to use for any great length of time. However, it still gives me access to Spotify, Audible, my banking app, and email, so I have not had to become a complete Luddite. I also bought a Camp Snap camera which I absolutely love. It has a real lo-fi dynamic and NO SCREEN, so you just point and shoot and don't worry about it.
I just found that my screen time dropped from day one, and even when I was tempted to browse mindlessly, it never lasted very long. My daily screen time has dropped from around 6-7 hours to around 50 minutes daily. Most of that is SMS messages with my wife. I've gone from 80 unlocks daily to around 20, and these figures are improving all the time as I learn to ignore my phone more.
A couple of things have really helped me:
Most of the positive change has been in my mindset. I still have a Facebook account and very occasionally I log in there to see what all my geographically distant friends are up to. I honestly no longer understand the appeal. People posting selfies and everyone commenting on it just makes me laugh, it's so absurd, it's a very weird echo chamber and utterly devoid of meaning. Even browsing Facebook feels like a massive wase of time and there are real-world things I would so much rather be doing. I haven't even looked at Instagram in weeks, and I never visit YouTube any longer. I look at Reddit a couple of times a week usually for around 20 minutes to catch up on subs that chime with my lifestyle aspirations, (mostly stoicism, literature, and my sports team.) I feel so much more positive and lighter in mood and outlook. I can feel my enthusiasm for life returning.
I am not going to say that all of this has come about simply because I changed my phone, but changing my phone has been the first step in a series of adjustments that I was determined to make. It hasn't always been easy, the first couple of weeks were very weird. I was always at a loose end and it felt like the days were incredibly long. I constantly picked my phone up only to realise there was nothing on it to do, so I'd put it down again. So, the new phone was a big help, but I had to be determined and remind myself continually, especially in the early days, of what I was doing and why.
It would be so hard to explain in words how it has changed my life in the most fundamental way. I have explained some of the shift here, but there is something deeper going on as well. It is as though life is richer and more poignant than it was when I was addicted to my phone. Music sounds better and I am more enchanted by it. I can read books now and become immersed. I recently read Tolkien's Unfinished Tales and was completely transported, a state of being that I thought I had lost, but no, it was like being a kid again, totally absorbed in a story, and living the highs and lows with the characters. I had real emotions from reading! I now watch a film and find myself being similarly transported. Sometimes it almost brings me to tears to watch a particularly moving piece of cinema. I had this happen yesterday when watching Gladiator (again). The bit where he sees his wife and little boy, and I felt such a rush of feeling, it was powerful, and I haven't had that happen for years. At least not nearly to such an extent.
So, on every level, this is the best thing I have ever done to improve my life, my health, and my mindset. I am never going back. I wish you success in your journey and hope that my experience inspires you.

The phone I bought was a Qin F22 Pro, which although a full-on Android capable device, has a very small screen, making it incredibly annoying to use for any great length of time. However, it still gives me access to Spotify, Audible, my banking app, and email, so I have not had to become a complete Luddite. I also bought a Camp Snap camera which I absolutely love. It has a real lo-fi dynamic and NO SCREEN, so you just point and shoot and don't worry about it.
I just found that my screen time dropped from day one, and even when I was tempted to browse mindlessly, it never lasted very long. My daily screen time has dropped from around 6-7 hours to around 50 minutes daily. Most of that is SMS messages with my wife. I've gone from 80 unlocks daily to around 20, and these figures are improving all the time as I learn to ignore my phone more.
A couple of things have really helped me:
- Reading: I have managed to spend more and more time reading actual books. At first this was very hard going, but now it is easy, and it only took about two weeks to settle down. I'm currently reading about a book a week.
- Stoicism: I am really getting into stoic philosophy, which has helped enormously with improving my mindset and my habits, check stoicism if interested.
- Journaling: I bought a big notebook and I started reflecting each day. This has helped me to stay focused and hold myself accountable.
Most of the positive change has been in my mindset. I still have a Facebook account and very occasionally I log in there to see what all my geographically distant friends are up to. I honestly no longer understand the appeal. People posting selfies and everyone commenting on it just makes me laugh, it's so absurd, it's a very weird echo chamber and utterly devoid of meaning. Even browsing Facebook feels like a massive wase of time and there are real-world things I would so much rather be doing. I haven't even looked at Instagram in weeks, and I never visit YouTube any longer. I look at Reddit a couple of times a week usually for around 20 minutes to catch up on subs that chime with my lifestyle aspirations, (mostly stoicism, literature, and my sports team.) I feel so much more positive and lighter in mood and outlook. I can feel my enthusiasm for life returning.
I am not going to say that all of this has come about simply because I changed my phone, but changing my phone has been the first step in a series of adjustments that I was determined to make. It hasn't always been easy, the first couple of weeks were very weird. I was always at a loose end and it felt like the days were incredibly long. I constantly picked my phone up only to realise there was nothing on it to do, so I'd put it down again. So, the new phone was a big help, but I had to be determined and remind myself continually, especially in the early days, of what I was doing and why.
It would be so hard to explain in words how it has changed my life in the most fundamental way. I have explained some of the shift here, but there is something deeper going on as well. It is as though life is richer and more poignant than it was when I was addicted to my phone. Music sounds better and I am more enchanted by it. I can read books now and become immersed. I recently read Tolkien's Unfinished Tales and was completely transported, a state of being that I thought I had lost, but no, it was like being a kid again, totally absorbed in a story, and living the highs and lows with the characters. I had real emotions from reading! I now watch a film and find myself being similarly transported. Sometimes it almost brings me to tears to watch a particularly moving piece of cinema. I had this happen yesterday when watching Gladiator (again). The bit where he sees his wife and little boy, and I felt such a rush of feeling, it was powerful, and I haven't had that happen for years. At least not nearly to such an extent.
So, on every level, this is the best thing I have ever done to improve my life, my health, and my mindset. I am never going back. I wish you success in your journey and hope that my experience inspires you.

It’s a black shield marine grouping, of multiple sources. I originally had started with a single colour pattern, and decided to start branching out, because I really love - all - the chapters, pre heresy legions, and post. And all the imperium units/factions. Decided I was greedy and wanted a bit of everything, despite how ambitious it was. Call it a post heresy collection of mankind, heretics by imperium standards, but not followers of chaos, or dwellers of the warp. Completely disillusioned by the Imperium of man, its hypocrisies, and wanting to be free men, by their own will, to inherit the stars - slaves to no god, false or otherwise. I wanted to give them a highland themed look, inspired by the clans, in traditional Scottish fashion, where everybody is either rivals or hates eachother, unless it entails hating someone together - comhar, y’know, cooperation in Gaelic. (There’s more to it - dm me if you actually care) With that being said! I wanted to preserve little pieces of coloumarkings of previous chapters/legions/guard armies/etc to add flair to the design. So I need an essentials colours list for the legions(yes, this is a lot I know) that I would greatly appreciate. I imagine a lot of you have your specific choices, but I’ll take what I can, and pool it together to make an in depth list, and obviously recurring colours I can stock more of. So 30K guys with preCSM heresy legions, all ears. I’ve att’d some pics to give you a better idea of where I’m at so far - and disclaimer, this is my first time doing SMs and touching the hobby in >20 years, so it’s not spectacular. This Saturday (May 11), the Grand Finals of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Malmö, Sweden after the 2 semifinals were concluded. This contest took place for the first time in 1956, and only cancelled once in 2020 due to the peak pandemic. However, this year’s competition made the headlines for a lot of reasons, including the Israeli participation, where Eden Golan also become one of the finalists with the song “Hurricane,” (don’t forget to stream!) composed by Avi Ohayon, Stav Beger, and Keren Peles. However, how does the contest work? For those who are new to the competition, I hope this introductory post helps.
Disclaimer: I’m a Eurovision fan from abroad who have been watching the contest for more than a decade. Yes, the competition’s broadcast begins at 2am for me usually, but it’s not a problem! I initially wanted to explore to fill my playlist, and it turned out I entered an entirely new music sphere.
COMPETITION STRUCTURE Since there are 37 participating countries this year (for real), 31 of them were divided into 2 semifinals that was drawn separately several months ago in the Semifinal Allocation Draw. Note that as a result of the first semifinal coinciding with the Holocaust Remembrance Day in Israel (Yom Hashoah), Israel asked the EBU for a dispensation to compete in the second semifinal, which the EBU accepted. The other 6 countries advanced directly to the Finals, where 5 of them are the countries who contributed the most to the EBU: France, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain, and Germany. The other 1 is the host country (this year is Sweden), and this year, they performed in the middle of the semifinal contestants (instead of a montage of their rehearsals from the previosu years) in the semifinals they are allocated to vote from the same allocation draw.
10 countries from each semifinal will qualify to the Grand Finals, where the auto-finalists joined to make it 26. Usually, the champion will get to host the competition the upcoming year, but for the nearest examples, not in 1980 (the Netherlands hosted instead as the third place after the United Kingdom, the runner-up of 1979, rejected, and after Israel also rejected and ended up withdrawing) and 2023 (due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which raised the safety concerns, the runner-up of 2022, the United Kingdom, offered to host, and Liverpool won the bid–but Ukraine also auto-qualified to the Finals as the 2022 champion).
As the whole competition is held within the fortnight (including the rehearsals and Turquoise Carpet, which is also a part of the Opening Ceremony a week before the real competition), these weeks are called the Euroweek. The semifinals and the final are held in the span of a week; for instance, in 2024 (this year), the competition is held in May 7 (semifinal 1), May 9 (semifinal 2), and May 11 (Grand Finals).
How are the performance orders determined? For the semifinals, in a different reveal show after the entry submission deadline (usually, after this, if countries wish to release a revamp or something, they are free to do so). For the Grand Finals, it is the press conference after their semifinals, which drawn the qualified countries to perform in the first half (somewhere between 1-13 out of 26), second half (14-26), or producers’ choice (up to the producers to determine where they perform, usually they try to balance out between slow tempo, mid-tempo, and high tempo ones so not all super-slow ballads are stacked in one place, and not all bangers are stacked in one place as a consequence of being too random).
WHO IS THE EBU? EBU is the European Broadcasting Union, the union of broadcasters across Europe (and some other country members). They have organized the contest since its inception in 1956, where the initial idea was “to bring Europe together in music post-war,“ or somewhere along those lines as inspired by the Italian Sanremo festival. There were 7 countries, and they used to send 2 entries before we settled into 1 entry per country starting 1957.
WHY IS THERE AUSTRALIA AND ISRAEL EVEN? Australia was initially invited to compete in 2015 as they have a lot of fans, and the SBS (Special Broadcasting Services) aired the competition since the 1980s, if I’m not mistaken. Thanks to their decent results that year (inside the Top 10 with Guy Sebastian’s “Tonight Again”), they were invited to compete until today. Somehow, Israel is still located in what is called the “EBU zone,” thus their debut in 1973 (with Ilanit’s “Ey-Sham”), and when they withdrew in 1980 (due to it coinciding with the same Holocaust Remembrance Day), Morocco took part instead with Samira Bensaid’s “Bitaqat Khub” as they are located in the zone. To add, Lebanon was about to debut with Aline Lahoud’s “Quand tout s’enfuit,” but suddenly Kdam 2005 happened and Lebanon could not partake when Israel is there, thus their withdrawal.
HOW DID THE PARTICIPANTS FROM EACH COUNTRY SELECTED? In general, there are several ways on how participants from each country are selected: 1. This can be artist only or also with the song, but in case of the former, it is usually because there are National Finals for just songs. 2. National Finals, where the broadcasters organize a competition/utilize an existing song festival in their country to pick their entries for the Eurovision Song Contest, usually both songs and artists, where its winner will be crowned champion and will be able to represent their countries in the competition. Some of the most famous festivals/national finals are such as but not limited to Melodi Grand Prix (Denmark, Norway), Melodifestivalen (Sweden), Festival da Cançao (Portugal), Beovizija (Serbia), Sanremo (Italy), Vidbir (Ukraine), Eesti Laul (Estonia), and recently ESCZ (Czech Republic) and Supernova (Latvia).
How about Israel? Good question! Through Israel’s Eurovision history, they have selected their entries both internally, through an existing festival (Festival Hazemer ve Hapizmon/פסטיבל הזמר והפזמו in 1978-79), a custom National Final (Kdam Eurovision/קדם אירוויזיון from 1981-2013 except for the withdrawing years), and where a reality singing competition was used to select the artist (Hakochav Haba for [2015-2020/1](tel:2015-2020/1) and 2023, X Factor for 2022). In the case of the latter, there were song-only National Finals in 2020-21 and 2022, where the same artist contests several different songs (for 2020-21) and 4 different artists present their competing songs in the X Factor Israel final rounds.
For this year, just like in 2015-19, Eden Golan internally selected the song “Hurricane” despite reports that the choice was between October Rain and Dance Forever.
HOW TO DETERMINE THE WINNERS/QUALIFIERS OF THE MAIN CONTEST? Good question! The voting advertisement you’ve seen across social media (and even billboards) help the televoting part, which accounted for 50% of the final points in the competition. The semifinal went full 100% televoting mode this year (something that appeared similar to 2004-06, if I’m not mistaken, I’m writing this in full memory mode), with the finals also having juries. If you’re familiar with douze points (12 points), it’s after all the votes have been tallied. Let me try to go deeper here.
Each country has 5 jury members, one will be a chair and some others are panels as well. They rank the songs as well from start to finish (I have no idea about what are their considerations to give marks), but their final ranks will be compiled and tabulated as one, and their average ranks will translate into awarding 12 points for the country’s cumulative 1st place, 10 points for the 2nd place, 8 points for their 3rd place, 7 points for their 4th place, 6 for their 5th, 5 for their 6th, 4 for their 7th, 3 for their 8th, 2 for their 9th, and 1 point for their 10th. The same points arrangement also applies for televoting as their % are arrayed, with the highest % getting the 12 points, and vice versa. The voting/ranking breakdown will usually be released right after the competition for the sake of transparency in Eurovision’s official website, but if the broadcasters ended up releasing their percentages too officially, they could go ahead (in the case of Italy that we know of, for example, they’re releasing it in full post-competition).
The televoting part, somehow, allows us to participate actively and vote for our favorite songs (for some, besides their own country). It’s like “favorite winner” or something like that in my native tongue. Campaigns to vote for your own entry to the voters abroad (since you cannot vote for your own country) is natural, and remember that there are locals who only tuned in in the Grand Finals day, that do not follow the competition as much as we do (or I do, to some extent), and after tuning in to that one day, that was it (thus, the more varying demography than just younger age range, you know). Or, those who might not follow/watch the competition, but they saw a campaign “vote this” and ended up voting instead. This might be the case how, despite our personal music taste (generally, some likes this song, though), Ukraine’s “Stefania” (performed by Kalush Orchestra) won in 2022, the year they got invaded by Russia.
However, if you notice something like a 12-point exchange between Greece and Cyprus, we can ask ourselves if they have a similar music taste cumulatively. My ears said they’re close enough as I explored their music, but maybe your taste feels something different!
And yes, voting results could divide the fandom once again, but remember, everyone: it’s millions of ears (and visuals) combined, so if the final results do not reflect our own musical tastes, then it’s natural. But, there will always be people (including us) that said “X robbed” “Y robbed” “A should have won” and carry that on until the end of the day. These kinds of discourses will fill the first days post-competition.
HOW CAN WE VOTE? To vote, call/SMS the numbers provided for your country corresponding to the running order (but you cannot vote for your own country) OR if you’re abroad like me, you can always go to the Eurovision app or esc.vote and vote for your favorite countries up to 20 times per payment method. For the rest of the world, voting will usually open after the day minus one Dress Rehearsal (Jury Final, this is the moment where the juries mark the performances like today, and no there are no commentaries like X Factor or else we’re going to take 3 days if every jury comments to each country LOL) to accommodate those who cannot watch due to the final taking place in nonsensical hours for their country (like mine, not everyone can watch ESC live at 2am), and the voting lines will open again after the first participant performs and during the interval act (non-competing acts that performs in between the participants and before the announcement, either past winner(s), past participant(s), popular artists, or even past National Finals contestant(s))) before the hosts and the voting windows say “Stop Voting Now!” Also, participating countries, you cannot vote for your own country but you can campaign so people can vote for your country’s entry–campaigning is always part of the competition, you know? (fans also campaign for their favorites so that makes sense).
POST-EUROVISION DEPRESSION? If you’ve heard about it, that’s because we cannot move on from the competition right after its conclusion. After it’s over, you felt like wanting to rank the song again, looping the song, re-watching the entire competition/National Finals. Or maybe you could end up participating in a fan contest made by your fellow fans and modeled after Eurovision, sending existing artists and songs and voting as if we are the delegation of some countries. The fan contests thing exists everywhere, I even administer one.

POST-EUROVISION DEPRESSION? If you’ve heard about it, that’s because we cannot move on from the competition right after its conclusion.  | Hello! Sorry this took me so long. I’m here to try to answer the question of ALAMAT’s advocacy being performative or not. Buckle up because this is... very lengthy. (That’s why it took me so long to post it.) Please do not screenshot my post and share it on other platforms; I have extreme anxiety. submitted by OmeletteMcMuffin to PPOPcommunity [link] [comments] First off, let’s define the word “performative.” Merriam-Webster defines it as “(disapproving) made or done for show (as to bolster one’s own image or make a positive impression on others).” This definition is undoubtedly what is being meant when some people call ALAMAT’s advocacy performative. So… what is their advocacy? This was their mission statement before: “Sa pamamagitan ng musika, layunin ng ALAMAT ang ipagdiwang ang ating pagka-Pilipino at maitanim sa puso’t isipan ng mga kabataang Pinoy na hindi kailangan hubarin ang ating kultura’t pagkakakilanlan para lamang umangat at makilala sa pandaigdigang entablado.” (Through music, ALAMAT’s mission is to celebrate our Filipino identity and to instill in the hearts and minds of the Filipino youth that we do not need to discard our culture and heritage in order to succeed and be recognized on the world stage.) This is found in the description of their newer videos: “Alamat is a 6-member sing-rap-dance boy group from the Philippines that combines both traditional and modern Philippine cultural elements with Western/global influences in the various facets of their music, including dance, fashion, and iconography.” I believe their newer statement is more in line with what they’re actually doing and puts less pressure on them. Their thing has always been taking precolonial cultural elements and modernizing them, and using indigenous elements but adding Western influences. It’s never been about “pure” representations, but infusing postcolonial, Westernized Filipino culture with precolonial or indigenous elements. When some people call their advocacy performative, they are trying to say that: 1. ALAMAT’s concept of multiculturalism and embracing indigenous Philippine culture(s) is purely a gimmick. The members do not care about it, and neither does the creative director. Is that true? Let’s investigate: I believe that it is possible for the members not to care about it if they were all pale-skinned, mestizo guys from Manila. However, all of them are probinsyanos, not all of them fit the dominant Eurocentric/East Asian-centric beauty standards, and most of them speak a different language (not Tagalog) as their mother tongue. The director mentioned before that he specifically chose members who were short, because the industry favors taller men (despite the fact that the average height in the Philippines is considerably shorter than other countries’). Tomas alone is, in more than one way, the exact kind of person who can’t not care about ALAMAT’s advocacy: he is the shortest member, standing at around 5’5”, he’s moreno, and he’s a Bicolano speaker who has an accent when speaking in Tagalog. He talked about it here, all the way back in August 2021 pa. He said that he often got rejected in the acting industry because of his Bicolano accent. Mo is visibly and proudly Blasian, Tomas is a short, moreno Bicolano, and Taneo is moreno and Indigenous on his father’s side. Even the members who fit the hegemonic beauty standards more — Jao with his tisoy/chinito looks, Alas with his pale skin and chinito looks, R-Ji who is fairly tall for a Filipino guy and has classically tisoy facial features a la Kyle Echarri — would struggle to fit in the industry for other reasons. Alas mentioned in the same interview as that one (more on that later) that he was often bullied for being Bisaya. Hollywood actor Alex Mallari Jr. (Ginny & Georgia, The Adam Project) even Tweeted before that he wouldn’t be able to find acting work in the Philippines because he’s Kapampangan and moreno. (I can’t find the Tweet anymore because he deleted his account, sadly.) The Philippine entertainment industry is highly colorist, highly favors Eurocentric and East Asian looks, and strongly discriminates against people from the probinsya, especially those whose first language isn’t Tagalog. My point here is that I would believe that these guys do not genuinely care about the advocacy/concept if they were the type of guys who could easily succeed in the industry without thinking about those things. But they are not. Mo did a (really beautiful) interview with Mixed Asian Media, an independent online zine, not some prestigious, high-profile publication, in September 2023. He spoke about his mixed Black and Filipino identity. It is clear that this advocacy of promoting Filipino multiculturalism is highly personal to the members. I’m not gonna lie — I think one of the main reasons that they have a reputation for “not being able to talk about their advocacy properly” is that a lot of people have unreasonable expectations regarding their speaking skills. They are young entertainers who simply have lived experiences that make the concept highly relevant to them. They are not academics and they are not diplomats. Not to mention that some of them aren’t confident when they speak in English or Tagalog. They do explain their own emotional investment in the concept as well as they should reasonably be expected to explain it (“I care about it because I know how discrimination/lack of representation has affected me and the impact it’s had on people around me as well, so what we do makes me feel less insecure about my own cultural identity”). You’ve got the members passionately speaking out about their own experiences (like here) and you’ve got academics for the more formal explanations. It’s not like they don’t invite academics to their platform, you know? An Akeanon professor who has published many relevant sociolinguistics studies spoke on one of their videos and they literally had a historian on their channel during their debut era. As for their creative director, promoting multilingualism and multiculturalism has been this guy’s thing even before ALAMAT came to be. I know a lot of people aren’t huge fans of his, but we need to acknowledge that. I don’t get this idea that he’s just using this concept to make a quick buck because the Filipino entertainment industry and society still vastly favor Tagalog-centrism. Doing this concept was and is a risk. He wrote the script for 2 Cool 2 Be 4Gotten (2016) and it features the Kapampangan language, even though it’s not directly related to the plot at all. Beauty Gonzalez was speaking in her native language, Cebuano Bisaya, in The Third Party (2016), even though it has no relevance to the plot or setting (a woman in Manila has to live with her bisexual ex and his boyfriend). His 2018 film, Bakwit Boys, heavily features the Kapampangan culture and language, inspired by his own upbringing. As I’ve mentioned before, a few years ago, I found a research paper that included his blog post from 2007. To my amusement, he was credited simply as a “Filipino blogger,” but yeah… even in 2007, he was already speaking up about the discrimination against Bisaya folks, even though he himself is Kapampangan and not Bisaya. 2) They are only using Indigenous aesthetics, but don’t care about Indigenous peoples of the Philippines. Likewise, they use aesthetics from non-Tagalog cultures but don’t uplift non-Tagalog people. To be honest, I believe that much of this is answered by the stuff above. However, putting aside the members’ own ethnic and cultural backgrounds, they definitely do work with and feature a lot of Indigenous and non-Tagalog talents on their platform. Some examples:

LDIP is a grassroots coalition for environmental action, and he stated that his team helped Indigenous folks in Mindanao solve environmental issues. Of course, there are always ways for the advocacy to be represented better. I myself have a major criticism of their MVs: Their leading ladies are usually still very mestiza or chinita. There’s nothing wrong, of course, with having a mestiza/chinita leading lady. However, in “ABKD,” they show a young Aeta girl whose self-esteem is damaged by Eurocentric beauty standards and colorism. Yet their music videos often reinforce this beauty standard by almost always casting mestiza/fair-skinned chinita women as romantic leads. This beauty standard has an even greater impact on Filipina girls/women than men. It’s sad, TBH, that “Maharani” is probably their only MV with naturalistic color grading among the ones that feature a romance storyline. I know for a fact that Viva has morena talents, so even if they wanted to keep it in-house, they can still do better. Morena girls deserve to be shown as worthy of love. I hope the group features a more visually diverse set of leading ladies, as a part of their advocacy. But yeah. Their advocacy is not perfect, but what we see indicates that the members’ and the creative team’s intentions are sincere. There are ways for it to be better, but they are definitely not performative and have already done so much great work in the few years that they have been a group. |

Research agendas were shaped and manipulated by the demands of national security. And resources were diverted away from civilian-oriented towards military objectives. The imperialist ruling class was strengthening its grip on academic research.
