2024.05.29 08:20 Happydude789 Received my FAA medical with a history of epilepsy!!

Let me start by saying, given the sheer amount of time and effort I've put into obtaining this small piece of paper, it has immediately become one of my most prized possessions.
Backstory:
I'm 25 years old with a history of absence seizures and treatment between the ages of 7-12 years old. Also, I have dysgraphia (poor handwriting) through school.
My Application Process
I started this journey back in June 2021 after wrapping up my junior year of college. Despite knowing about my medical history, I naively visited my local AME without any preparation and applied for my 3rd class medical. In hindsight, and as many people recommend, I should have come prepared with documents, tests, and sign-offs from my neurologist. Without much surprise, I was deferred and entered the limbo that is FAA OKC.
Four months later, in October 2021, I heard back. The new letter required I complete the following:
Given I was in the middle of wrapping up my senior year of college in a very rural town, I was in no place to start this. I didn't reply and received another letter stating that my application was on hold until I provided the requested information.
In August 2022, after graduating and getting a job, I finally got around to scheduling the procedures and gathering the documents. Everything was relatively easy to order with the help of my doctor. The only issue I ran into was that the FAA had requested the actual files of the EEG on a CD for Windows 10, but the hospital could only provide Windows 7 software and shrugged their shoulders when asked if there was a newer version. Additionally, I had read through my medical documents and discovered a typo in one of the medical reports, which noted I was drinking 2-3 drinks a day, not a week as I had said. I reached out to the doctor who had made this note, and they added a follow-up message to the report. After everything was complete, and with a little note explaining the software snag, I sent off the package in late September 2022.
Six months later, in April 2023, I heard back. This time, not with a medical, but with another list of tasks. The new list included:
The first three made sense, given they were all in my medical history. Before I went off to college, I had asked my neurologist if it was safe to use weed recreationally. Even though I never did, I'm guessing that's what triggered the response.
The ADHD request, however, took me by surprise. Even to this day, I have no idea what triggered the request. I've never had any history of it or even the thought of it. My best guess is that one of the epilepsy medications I took doubles as an ADHD drug. Unfortunately, they never tell you why.
The ADHD battery was the most expensive out of all this. I searched all around my area (Seattle, WA) and found quotes ranging from $2000 to $4000. I ended up going with a doctor who'd be the cheapest if I only did the first battery but more expensive if I had to do both. Since I don't have ADHD, I figured I could probably roll the dice.
I delayed the ADHD test for a long time as I wasn't sure if it would be worth the cost, given I could jump through all these hoops and likely get a Special Issuance requiring me to do this every year to maintain. Since I only have aspirations for a PPL, the maintenance cost wouldn't be worth it for me. Finally, I decided to bite the bullet and see it through. I got the ADHD battery done in mid-February of this year and passed with flying colors. I wrapped up the second package and sent it off in mid-April 2024.
I called weekly throughout this process to check on my status—always "in review" with no luck. Early this month, I read another post on here talking about reaching out to your congressional representative to contact the FAA on your behalf and having good success. I decided it was worth a shot and sent them a message on May 14th.
Two weeks later (today!), I got my medical in the mail!
The Results
I got issued a standard 3rd class medical with no SI clauses attached!
The only ironic part is that since I started this almost two years ago, this medical expires in just a few weeks. Luckily, it sounds like renewing an existing medical is much easier than applying for a new one.
I'm over the moon, and while I haven't even started gaining hours, I'm still so happy I saw this through. Thank you to this community for all the resources it has provided and for all the awesome people who hang out and give their time.
tl;dr timeline

2024.05.29 08:19 godiegoben Opinions on Dr. Sheppard? I think he’s a poorly written character.

I think he’s the most poorly written character in the show. The same way women are always written poorly just to be a plot tool for the protagonist, that’s what he is for Merideth. I used to feel so sad for her when he died and while I still think her grieving is a good storyline, I think they missed an opportunity.
Here’s what I think would’ve been way better. There should’ve been way more romance and a newfound spice in her life. They should’ve killed off his boring character anyway but what’s the point if she was equally as flatlined?

2024.05.29 08:15 Faustyna Possibility of being banned by Amazon for 'taboo' subjects in fantasy-romance (*not* erotica)?

I've written this three times now. Selfpublish called me a perv, and eroticaauthors told me nothing at all was ever allowed, so that wasn't super helpful either.
I remembered fantasywriters exists so I thought I'd come over to my real peeps.
I write fantasy with romance (I actually like the term romantasy that has become popular lately too). If I were to compare it to something that's relatively well known, if a bit dated, I'd say something like InuYasha - fantasy first, with the romance being important, but there's still a story without the romance.
I keep things pg13/fade-to-black, so my work is kinda upper YA to NA.
I've recently seen an uptick of posts in various places lamenting that Amazon has banned books/authors/accounts based on writing things that go against their ToS. Of course their ToS is vague and not actually that helpful either.
What I can't get a straight answer on is if these things are bannable because they are in erotica/explicit, or because the subject in general, and how 'romance' would fit into it. I'm pretty sure the lack of a straight answer there is on purpose too.
While I try and stray on the side of caution, and I've had to redo some plot points here and there because of it, I still worry that I will cross a line I didn't know was there and get myself banned.
For instance in my current story there's a small plot point where a noble family had taken in an orphaned teenage boy. Their teen daughter fell in love with him, so they arrange a betrothal between the two rather than fosteadopt him.
I am now worried that this might be seen as 'pseudo-incest' and potentially lead to a ban.
Similarly I used to have 'incest' in some of my plots because noble cousins would marry. I went through and shifted things about so that those couples aren't related anymore, but it messed with plans and dynasties, and there are things I still need to redo from scratch for future books. It's frustrating because we all know that things like A Song of Ice and Fire get away with this sort of thing due to being with a publishing house. But the rules are different if you selfpublish.
I'm also wondering if you can mention/imply sex between minors. Again, I am not talking smut or even steamy things, just... teenagers have sex and it sometimes happens in stories. If a character gets married at 16 or 17 because that's the age of majority, and we get some kissing before fading to black, is that considered underage? I grew up with Tamora Pierce's books, who never shied away from the fact that sometimes teenagers were treated as adults, and they may have sex, gotten married, or had kids (though it often is over-represented in fantasy, and wasn't always the case historically).
I read that 'bloodplay' isn't allowed at Amazon. What about vampires? I just wrote a scene where a character cuts his lip and kisses his wife to transfer magic to her. They happen to be in bed and talking about magic after having sex, which was off-screen. It's certainly intimate, and if you squint I guess you could be upset enough about it to report it as bloodplay.
I know I should probably just write and not worry about it. I probably won't be banned, and even if I am, there are other avenues. I'm putting the cart before the horse here with only having published two books (and they aren't even selling that well). But still, I can't help but think about how much of a bitch it would be if a series gets banned 8 books in. Or worse, my whole account.
The ironic part of all this is that I don't write erotica, or smut, or even spicy romance. I just want to be able to write about my massive made-up-world that I've been working on since I was a teen.

2024.05.29 08:01 SharkEva Mother wants to legally force me to live with her even though I am 39.

I am not the OOP. The OOP is u/ElectronicMoon1676 posting in AskALawyer
Likely Concluded as per OOP
2 updates - Medium
Original - 13th May 2024
Update1 - 15th May 2024
Update2 - 23rd May 2024

Mother wants to legally force me to live with her even though I am 39.

So my mother (60) has always had a flair for dramatics and will convince herself of things that are just not true, and of course her brothers (my uncles) think it’s hilarious and will get her worked up even more, while making fun of her for being so gullible behind her back. I cut her out of my life 4 years ago. We are in Michigan. Someone I trust in the family came to me with concerns that my mother may lie to try to get conservatorship over me.
Here is what I know. Her current belief is that I am an unemployed alcoholic living in my car and being taken advantage of by evil men from the political party that she hates. This is not true. I have a place, pay my bills and had a full-time job last time we spoke. I did leave that job but I also returned to school full time on GI Bill, which includes a stipend for living expenses, and found a sweet part-time job, in an air conditioned office, on campus. As far as I know she has no idea I am back in school and I haven’t told anyone in my family, even the ones I trust, what is going on in my life.
Problem is that she lost her job of over 20 years during a mass lay off sometime since we last spoke. These new coworkers haven’t known her long enough to recognize how she doesn’t keep her stories straight or how she flip-flops things around. Basically she has led everyone she works with to believe I am only in my early-mid 20’s and haven’t quite finished my “teenage rebellion phase”, and she is a good mommy who just wants to save her baby from the evil political party.
They have all been “helping her with “research””, and believe because I have a disability rating from the VA, it means I am mentally incompetent. It does not at all mean that. Now I am positive that none of them actually understand how a VA disability rating actually works, my mother likely lied to them about it. Her new friends believe she can have me declared incompetent, force me to live with her for monitoring, and finally take control of my finances thus getting control of my disability payments. I have an 80 rating which is currently just under $2000 a month.
My concern isn’t that my mother could prove I am incompetent but it’s that she could use court proceedings to get a hold of my address, school, or work place. I guess my question is about rules of discovery when it comes to conservatorship cases. Can my mother or any lawyer willing to take her case on actually get ahold of my personal info I don’t want her to have?
If I provide courts with documents proving my competence and ability to care for myself, do I have the right to ask the court to seal or redact any information or documents with info I don’t want her getting? She sabotaged me going to college around 20 years ago and I don’t want to go through that again. I am assuming that the first person I would ever have to deal with would be a social worker, and I want to know if I have any legal recourse to prevent the social worker from sharing my info with my mother?

See if your college has some kind of free legal aid service they can direct you to, and explain this to them. They might be able to point you in the direction to get low cost or free legal services so an attorney can send your mother a cease and desist letter along with filing for a restraining order in such a manner as to not disclose your current whereabouts.
They might also have other ideas that will curtail any attempt by her to try to put a conservatorship in place.
OOP: I just checked and they don’t. But, silly me forgot, the VA clinic in my city has a social worker on site. I used her once for a medical power of attorney. But I bet she could either help me herself or get me to the right resource.

Stunning-Interest15
Not a lawyer, but they pay me a shit ton of money to handle stuff like this as a private investigator. Here's my take.
Yes. Her lawyer will hire an investigator to find all of your information. They will pay online databrokers for your file and they will get WAY more than your address. (Everything. They will get everything. If you fucked up and said that thought you didn't want people knowing about, they will find that out.)
Any of that information that can then be found on Google is a public record since it's already on the public Internet. Your address is almost certainly among that data.
No court can sanction public information. Even if they could, the internet is forever and it's already out there.
So, bad news there. The good news is that you're a grown ass woman and the courts are not going to give her a conservatorship just because you have PTSD. You are in no danger of anything other than your mom showing up on your doorstep unannounced.
OOP: How likely are lawyers and private investigators to take on someone without the ability to pay. Do they have the ability to check credit scores. My mother is terrible with money. My brother confessed to me that she “sold the house” she bought with her third husband a little while after their divorce. By brother insinuated that she was in a bad way with money. I know that when I was 20 and she was 40, I had a better credit score than her. I went to buy a used car and she said she would have to co-sign cuz I was too young to have a good credit score. Turned out I got a better rate without her co-signing. Makes me wonder how bad someone’s credit has to be that you are detrimental to a loan as a co-signer.

Update - 2 days later

I tried to update the original post and couldn’t, and the update comment I left got buried at the bottom.
Backstory: Mother wanted me declared incompetent to gain control of me and my veteran disability payments.
So I talked with another family member who confirmed what the first said. Everyone is angry because I wasn’t suppose to find out what happened because “they were handling it”. I refused to tell who told me, which is causing more anger but whatever. So this situation had resolved itself last week. My mother was talking a big game about how she was calling lawyers and Adult Protective Services. After a few days she started trashing on all lawyers and saying that APS was wasting taxpayer dollars.
Apparently she has forgotten all about this whole mess. Her job got a new summer internet and my mother is obsessed. Every conversation anyone has with her is about this guy. My poor grandma has to have no less than a one hour conversation with my mother everyday about this guy. The guy comes from a lot of money, which in the end was what I think she wanted with me. This guy just turned 20 and my mother is 60.

That sounds like a win for now. Most likely, APS "laughed" her out of the room. I would avoid contact since she sounds Manic, going from one scheme or idea to another.

If I had a nickel for everytime I heard of someone's mom trying to force their 100% VA disabled veteran son or daughter to live with them by declaring them incompetent for self care, I'd have about 25 to 30 cents. It's just weird that it's happened that many times, and it's sad. Stay away from her, and thank you for your service!

Update - 8 days later

TLDR of my previous post was that my mother wanted to have me declared incompetent so she could get control of my veteran disability payments and force me to come live with her. I went no contact like 4 years ago. Her plan was to make up wild stories about me and it didn’t go her way. Now she is obsessed with this new intern at her job that comes from money, and seems to have forgotten all about her plan.
I was able to squeeze in meeting with the social worker who works at my VA clinic. I gave her the run down and even showed her my two previous posts. She thought it was kinda funny. She informed me that if a state SW were to be informed of a veteran in a need they would reach out to the VA and she would likely be a first point of contact.
She said that no one from the county or state has contacted her about me yet, but she would make a note. Apparently, the whole Britney Spears conservatorship has made a lot of people think it’s super easy to get conservatorships. She said some people think they will get paid a lot of money to do it. Her best guess is that if my mother did call, it was explained to her how complex the process is and that I would be guided to the VA to receive treatment first, before declaring me incompetent. She did agree with many of the comments that said my mother could find me pretty easily if she really wanted to.
The SW use to work at the state office and while she didn’t work at adult protective services but she had friends and coworkers who did. Money seemed to her to be a really big factor in how hard people fought to get conservatorship. She was surprisingly compassionate towards my mother and said sometimes parents just get worried and worry makes people do stupid things. She said some parents have a hard time adjusting to their children becoming adults and moving out.
Sometimes it’s because they are losing child support, or they’re losing the person who did all the chores, or because they just don’t want to face reality that their baby grew up. And these parents will lash out at the world instead of accepting the truth. She told me about a case a friend of hers had where the parents of an adult woman who had moved out couldn’t face reality. Her parents had been relying on her to do all the housework and raise her brothers. With her gone, everything fell apart at home.
These parents blamed their daughter who had moved out instead of taking responsibility for their own lives Her friend was so stressed by the case because she got yelled at by the parents almost daily about how the state needed to force their daughter to move back in with them. They never got their wish and almost lost their other kids. A grandparent found out what was happening and stepped up to set the parents straight.
Someone had messaged me saying my post was blowing up on social media and I went looking for it and couldn’t find it. They pointed out my family could see it, but I’ve decided I don’t care if they do.
So basically, if my mother really wants to find me she can, but the conservatorship isn’t that easy to get, and I know my mother well enough to know she doesn’t have the patience, or money needed to pursue this anymore. Also there seems to be a lot of rules surrounding conservatorship that I don’t think my mother would have liked following. So I should be good for a while.

Comments

OOP in response to a deleted comment (presumably about the intern)
A far as I know he still works there and she is still obsessed.

DredgenCyka
You should still remain in No Contact with your mom. This will still make it difficult to gain conservatorship over you. I also don't think the VA hospital will pronounce you incompetent at all unless you lost limbs or went into a vegetative state from a concussive blast, in addition 100% Disabled ≠ Incompetent to manage youre own life. Hopefully, the VA will become an advocacy group for you, im also pretty sure the VA offers lawyers to their veterans. You can ask about that if your mom steps out of line.

I am not the OOP. Please do not harass the OOP.
Please remember the No Brigading Rule and to be civil in the comments

India's financial markets and political climate are planned to be significantly changed by the followup Lok Sabha Elections in 2024. In the Indian stock markets, times of elections generally bring forward a number of probabilities together with risk. Buyers may establish a productive investing program via taking consideration of the chance effect that this major occurrence on Best Stock Market In India
Trade Behavior & H historical Perspective
Indian elections have traditionally frequently brought about short-term market turmoil, which is usually observed as ongoing patterns based on the outcomes of the elections. In the case of the 2014 elections, in which the BJP led by Narendra Modi won handily, prompted a significant market rally based on public opinion of the incoming the government's pro-business policy. As a result, the unexpected loss of the NDA in the elections caused a dramatic decrease in the market and investor fear.
In view of this, the seems likely that the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 will influence the Indian stock market equally. Receiving ready for risk along with making decisions based on possible outcomes and the implications on several industries is necessary for maintaining the current scenario.
Pre-Election Techniques: Using Stock of Disruption
Markets are bound to be subject to political coverage, polling results, and political campaigns as the election grows close. The following is how your portfolio should be established:
• Spread your investments across various sectors to mitigate risk. Sectors such as FMCG, healthcare, and utilities often remain stable during political uncertainty.
• Defensive stocks, which are less sensitive to economic cycles, can provide a cushion against volatility. Companies in sectors like consumer staples, pharmaceuticals, and utilities are typically considered safe bets.
• One advantage of diversification is Distribute your investments inside some of the different fields to reduce risk. In times of political unpredictability, a certain industries—such as food and drink, the medical field, and indispensable services—seem kept predictable.
• Pay your bills Keeping an eye on defensive stocks Because these assets are more resistant to currency fluctuations, they may function as an insurer against swings. Safe holdings tend to be linked with operations that provide services such as utilities, medical devices, and basic necessities.
Post-Election Strategy Adjust to the Outcome
• The stable Ministry Growth The belief of consistent developments and modifications triggers markets reaction to be favorably when one political bloc or stable coalition provides the government. After is the present. to make expenditures in manufacturing like economics, technology, and infrastructure that stand to gain from the goals laid out by the government.
• Broken Fragmented Mandate: In the near term, fluctuation in markets possibly caused by a weak coalition or a hung parliament. It's advisable use caution in these situations. Pay attention to solid, underlying businesses that can survive an interim of unforeseeable policies.
long-term success Factors Growth and Economic Reforms
The historical record of India's maintained economic growth is unaffected by outcome of the election. The country offers great investment potential due to its huge and enthusiastic population, advancing middle class, and increasing population urbanization. Here's how to future align your deposits
• Invest with Growing The fields Organizations that have possibilities for long-term expansion embody items for consumers, financial services, and technology. India's economic growth and rising buying habits are projected to help organizations in these domains.
• Sustainable Making an investment The role of the environment, society, and governance reasons is rising.
Conclusion: Navigating the Election Year
With a doubt, the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 will be an important time for The Indian Stock Market - Motilal Oswal . You can manage risk and take risks with a strategy which focuses on defensive shares, grows your investments, follows cash on your hands and keep on top of current events.

2024.05.29 07:58 Jolgo My two unpopular opinions about Fallout games as a guy who completed every installment at least twice:

  1. Fallout 3 is actually a good game and a good Fallout.
Yes, I know. It has it's problems and it doesn't even come close to New Vegas but. Hear me out.
What Fallout games are supposed to do above other things is to be a good role playing experience. And Fallout 3 does just that. The quests are, apart from some few terribly designed ones, decent. Unlike in most modern RPGs, you aren't lead by the hand (however, it was sometimes pushed to the other extreme) and you actually do have control over the outcomes - you are able to make choices that are impactful, and they aren't limited to simply chosing once at the end of every quest. You can feel they have consequences for some pretty well written NPC if not for your character. I know you are forced to stick to one faction and the main questline kind of sucks but so does the one in NV regardless of your faction choice. Fallout 3 also does something we loved Morrowind and New Vegas for - you are able to get a unique item or other piece of content out of sudden, doing something seemingly irrelevant in a seemingly unimportant location. Attention to detail in F3 locations in general is simply... great, I'd even risk it and say it's somewhat done more thoroughly than in New Vegas (yeah, yeah. Bethesda's deadlines I know nonetheless - I'm judgning what's on the table).
Another thing that the first Bethesda's contribution to the franchise does well is attempting to create a feeling of artificial solitude... and doing it really well. Your character is named The Lone Wanderer... and he really IS one. This... atmosphere. Something really hard to achieve and the devs nailed it.
Don't get me wrong. While I'm not an Obsidian purist, I'm not saying "3" is as good as NV. I'm simply stating that it's by no means a bad game.
  1. It's Fallout 4, not Fallout 76, that's the real insult to the franchise.
Pfff, where do I start? Fallout games are known for being role playing games. Thus, what they gather around themselves are RPG fans. We love them because they let us immerse ourselves in a post apocalyptic world, play a role and have our own story. Nobody expects a spin-off to be exactly what the "main" installments are. It's a spin-off after all. It can be an FPS, hack and slash, a card game or a fucking Battle Royale for all I care. But if you are trying to create a worthy continuation of a franchise you should stick to what the series is supposed to be and at least try to fucking include the elements people love it for. Fallout is all about choices. Dialogues in Fallouts are supposed to be non-linear, unpredictable and dependent on what your character has experienced, you are supposed to be able to be unconventional, clever, sly, cynical, noble... What the fuck is this 4-choice (sometimes de facto only 1-choice) garbage implemented only to make console players' lives 0.0001% easier? This is a real spit in the fandom's face. And, somtimes because of that, the quests became... linear, bland. They, for the most part, aren't quests anymore. They are just tasks. Your choose rarely and if you do - your choices are binary. And a great share of this binary choices' impact is illusory. And of top of that they miss... something. I feel like Bethesda was too busy designing them so a casual player is protected from consequences of their own actions to make them... How should I put this? Dazzling.
I do know current AAA gaming is all about monetization. But come on, you aren't selling games to apes. Why castrating the game of a skill system that was really good?
And the main factions. While you do have a non-binary choice here, they are all... bland. Choosing your main faction in NV was hard and has been a subject of moral debates a decade after releasing the game. Even the Caesar's Legion had it's good side and wasn't that terribly made despite Bethesda's deadlines. In Fallout 4, however, I have a feeling that choosing your faction is a choice that is only a little less illusory than those "decisions" you make during the "quests".
Yeah, the settlement building system is good. And the followers and the interactions with them are amazing, I'll give them that. The Far Harbor DLC is decent for the most part. Also - I do like the legendary weapons system, I don't know why. There are also the obvious things like graphics, putting some work into making weapons heavily modifiable and improving how the Power Armors work, but they're a result of increasing hardware and current technology capabilities rather than great creative process decisions resulting from understanding of the franchise and they are actually mostly secondary things when it comes to Fallout keypoints.
But that's it. I can understand why a casual player enjoy Fallout 4. But for me, a Fallout veteran, tthe game downgraded in every other aspect, including the most vital ones. And main games
SHOULD NOT DOWNGRADE
Thanks for reading

2024.05.29 07:58 NoEnd2717 What should I do? Genuinely struggling for perspective.

TL:DR I seemingly cannot get hired anywhere.
I am absolutely struggling to find a job, a consistent, reliable job.
I am 23 and have been working since I was 15 I have been looking for a job for at least a month and a half now with no success.
Big jobs turn me down as well as minimum wage jobs!
Can someone tell me if it’s just me? Or are others experiencing this too and if so what do I do!
The thought of taking such a step back is so degrading and defeating but I’m not sure I have any other options.
Backstory: I quit my job (which no longer exists as it went out of business) in February to pursue a career in Firefighting, but very quickly after leaving I tore my meniscus and started looking for another job.
Found one in March and then got fired at the end of April because I, stupidly and regretfully broke the rules. Since then I have been desperately searching for a job but having zero luck. Either they turn me down or they’re not hiring.
Work history:
Convenience store - 09/18 - 02/22 11$/hr (Resigned) Local school district IT - 05/19 - 02/22 12$/hr (Resigned) Solar company - 02/22 - 05/23 19$/hr (FIRED) Pool repair company 05/23 - 02/24 17$/hr (Resigned) Maintenance company 03/24 - 04/24 18$/hr (FIRED)
As you can see I have been fired twice once in 2023 and most recently from the job previously mentioned.
I have two degrees, associates of applied science in cybersecurity and associates of science general studies. But according to a staffing company these are useless.
I recently learned that some employers don’t hire due to lack of “length of work” so I’ve even resorted to lying on my applications by leaving off the maintenance job and stating that I’m still working at the pool company (my old boss is ok with helping me in this matter as he is closing his business down)
But even this seems to not be helping.
Is my fate truly beg somewhere to hire me for $7.25 (local minimum wage)
What do I do… the thought of starting back at square one in my career path is absolutely defeating and crushing and doesn’t help that I won’t be able to move out until who knows when considering rent is 2k average in my area.
Additionally, I haven’t found anything I’m passionate about it so the only thing I’ve been chasing with these jobs is whichever could give me a higher paycheck, I left the my two part-time jobs to work for a solar company which gave me an $8 pay increase. And after I got fired from there for poor performance, I was rather lucky to be hired by a family member to service pools. After leaving that job I stupidly got fired from the maintenance job!!
Is this what I deserve? I went to a staffing agency for help and they told me I wouldn’t even get hired at McDonalds. And unfortunately a few minimum wages jobs I’ve applied to have denied me.
For so long my goal has been just to move out and be financially independent.
Am I just bitching for no reason or is there any hope. Some slap some sense into me cause I’m drowning here.
Thanks guys.

2024.05.29 07:57 julioreds Letter of Rec/ writing essays

My two dream schools are USC and Stanford for CS, I’m wondering what aspects of an applicant are they looking for when they read essays/ letters of recommendation?
Also should essays be written as why “I” should go to this school ( as in saying that the resources and everything about the school is what I’m seeking for) or why “me” ( as in should the essay be less focused on why they want to go to that school but focused on traits that the schools like alongside knowing that their resources are necessary ? ) I’m just really confused by what schools mean when they say that you’re a good “fit” for this school. If you could tailor these towards Stanford and USC I would appreciate any advice!!

2024.05.29 07:56 Frequent_Customer_68 Does it get better and how to cope with continued feelings and anger? (Long post) (Vent)

Hello, this will be my first ever reddit post which is testament to the fact I am desperate. This is going to be a bit long because lots of context is needed. I apologize in advance for bad grammar or confusing storyline.
I 19(f) have recently been dumped by my (ex) girlfriend around 2 months ago I continue to struggle with anger surrounding what happened and it's just so genuinely frustrating. I will start with some backstory to our relationship up to the falling out and break up. I will be using the name "Sarah" for my girlfriend.
I met Sarah my senior year of high school at my current coffee shop job, I had just got back from bootcamp and was eager to meet new people. Sarah was my age around 8 months older. She had the kinda magnetism where I knew I was going to be in deep and that something was going to happen between us. We quickly became friends and the attraction was real. I could tell she liked me and I knew I liked her but I was scared as my previous girlfriend had cheated on me and I am generally mistrustful of new people.
2-3 weeks into our friendship I invite her to a new year's party, after a couple drinks she confesses that she loves me. I was scared and told her I didn't know her well enough yet, she handled the rejection well. Later that night she flirted with my friend's brother heavily but I assumed it was because she was drunk and I didn't really take note of it. Sarah denied flirting with the brother when my friend brought it up and started calling him creepy. Another red flag yet I ignored it. From there on my friend disliked Sarah. Despite the mishap Sarah and I were still friends and our hangouts went from being with other friends to just us. There was a definite romantic and sexual undertone. I eventually confess and she accepts. Sarah and I were absolute lovebirds I had never been so sure of anything in my entire life. She softened my hardened exterior and genuinely gave me a type of joy that made me want to be by her side forever.
About 6 months into our seemingly perfect relationship I have order to about 16 weeks of training which we knew was coming. At this point I had gained 30lbs from the relationship and was quite overweight. My training was about 1,000 miles away so there was no chance of seeing eachother during this time. During training I was heavily bullied for my weight and other things that I will not get into left me traumatized. Everynight I would call Sarah. She was my joy at the end of a tough day, the reason I knew I had to persist. About 3 weeks into training she has to go to a contract job that will be very labor intensive and long hours. On her way to the jobsite she will be staying at for a month she calls me and we chat casually. During the call she mentions how she wants to have a threesome with me and she wants our third to be a male. I found this incredibly disrespectful because I am a lesbian. I try to hide the fact how deeply this hurt me but she continues to go on about how I would be so perfect if I had a penis. I couldn't hide how badly this was hurting me so I quickly said goodbye and hung-up. Sarah was mad at me for the sudden goodbye but I explained how she hurt my feelings. She begins to back pedal and explain how she didn't mean any disrespect and it was just bad wording on her part.
Sarah was now at her jobsite and our contact defnitely dwindled. I tried my best to get ahold of her but she was always busy during all times of the day. I accepeted the fact that she was working but I didn't understand why she couldn't just text me or call me at night. She started texting me things like "I don't feel like I'm in a relationship right now" and how she didn't feel loved. I tried my best to reassure her tell her my training would be done shortly. Things continued to get worse Sarah started telling me that she didn't want to be together. I assumed this was self-sabotage (she has diagnosed BP) and told her to break-up with me if it was that bad, but I would still be there for her. She did not breakup with me but all contact ceased for 5 days. I was distraught and when I finally got ahold of her she was apologetic and blamed her absence on work. I accpeted her apology but I was deeply hurt by this. Later we got into a fight because she lied about being out with friends. Sarah in my mind was a very honest person so I was deeply hurt by the fact she felt the need to lie to me. I was upset and mentioned her ghosting me and she told me I was dragging it on to make her feel guilty. I was livid but stayed with her and she eventually apologized for lying and for saying that.
5 weeks later and my training is almost complete and Sarah is back home from the contract job. Sarah and I begin to have problems again over her not feeling loved and feeling like she was single. I once again explain that I'm not trapping her and that I love her unconditionally. She eventually breaks-up with me and I once again assume this is sabotage. We stay in contact she still tells me she loves me etc. This is when "Brian" makes an appearence. Brian is her new bestfriend who works with her and Sarah says he makes her happy etc. At this point alarm bells are going off in my head but she denies liking him and says they're just friends. I write my suspicions off as insecruity and continue talking to her.
My training is almost complete and I have to go out to the feild for 1 week I won't have my phone and I tell Sarah this. I complete my week of training but something happens there which later effects my graduation. The moment I get back I had gotten a lot of texts from Sarah telling me how much she misses me and that she was self-sabotaging. I welcome her back in open arms. About 1 week before graduation I am part of an impending investigation and they need my tesitomony. I know at this point I am probably not going to graduate on time with my peers but I am in denial. Sarah makes plans to drive down to my graduation and I continue without telling her about the investigation. 48 hours before graduation I partially confess to not being able to gradute on time but I dont include the details to why. Sarah is PISSED, but rightfully so and we continue until I'm able to go home 4 weeks after my graduation. I suprise her back home and all is well.
We move in together but I have this nagging feeling she was not honest about Brian. I eventually go through her phone while she was sleeping and find her sexts with him and how she actually dated him. I am livid I confront her and she is deeply apologetic but explains how she wasn't cheating because we were broken up. I begrudingly accept this and we stay together but she deeply hurt me with all the lying. About 1 week later I go thorugh her phone and findout she was cheating on me while she was at her jobsite. Sarah had sent around 4+ guys her nudes and other sexts (I am still currently unaware if she had actual sex with anyone besides Brian but she denies it) I confront her, I wasn't even angry just sobbing and this is the first time I ever cried in front of her. She denies that she cheated and takes her phone from my hands. I beg her to let me see and she says no. Eventually she hands her phone over and I see everything she sent again. At this point we are still together but it is miserable. I am constantly freaking out at her and she is working a lot of hours. Sarah sits me down and explains I am making her feel like shit because of the guilt and that she can't help but resent me for it. I beg her not to go. We eventually agee to stay together for 1 more month but we have a big fight and I move out 1 week into the agreement.
The story is now mostly current. We have had on and off contact during the break-up but I recently blocked her. I feel like I have no more self-respect. How does someone get cheated on and then dumped by the cheater. This whole experince plus the things that have happened during training have left me broken. I hate the way I feel. I'm currently going to the gym and dieting but I don't know how to deal with all this self-loathing. I miss her a lot but I also hate her for what she did. A part of me hopes we can meet again as strangers and fall in-love again. I just feel so lonely and angry all the time. It makes me so mad how you can bare your very soul before someone and it won't matter. I want her to hurt the way she hurt me. I want her to know she is a terrible person. I want her to hold me again. This has just been so frustrating and I know it gets better but I'm just so done.
I left out a lot of details and probably rambled a bit. I don't know if anyone could say anything to make me feel better this is mostly just a rant post.
TL;DR
Ex GF cheats on me while I was in military training, we stay together anyways and she dumps me. I now am hateful.

2024.05.29 07:56 ReleaseTheKraken98 Applying for Fall 25 MSBA

First a bit of background on me. I graduated from a mid tier state school with a double major in marketing and finance. I finished those degrees with honors and a 3.52 cumulative GPA.
Since then, I have been stuck in retail and unable to find anyone who will take a chance on me so I decided to pick up an MSBA to get more hard coding and analytical skills to pair with finance and try to swing into some sort of analytical finance role. Maybe fintech, business intelligence or even just a business/ finance analyst.
My work experience and general experience isn’t great, I am hoping to complete an analytics project this summer to help my sister raise sales of her book, maybe land an internship in there and I might also get the CFA level 1 exam.
I am planning on taking the GRE in wishlist and am aiming for higher than a 166 quant score. I am also currently at a local CC taking some courses to bridge the gap between what will be required and my current skills. So far I will have: stats, SQL, web development, macro Econ, micro Econ, intro data science technologies, basic Java, calc 1 and (maybe) calc 2. Does this sound like a solid list of skills to prep for an MSBA?
Finally the schools I’m applying to are: UW Seattle, Gonzaga, ASU, UCSC, UCD, UCB, UCLA, UCI, UCSD, USC, UT Austin and Michigan.

anyone else think that the brothers treated kevin kind of shittily? i mean the poor kid lost his entire life as he knew it and the were just constantly ordering him to the tablet as if that's all he was good for. specifically in season 9 episode 9, the episode of his death he goes up to kevin demanding a spell "asap", and kevin replies "it's always a spell, and it's always asap", quite sadly if i might add. he asks when he needs needs it, and dean replies, "yesterday, cinderalla", very crudely. this is literally the second to last conversation he ever has with kevin. in the last one, kevin again presses as to why dean wants this spell and what's going on. dean, as always, doesn't indulge and tells him to trust him. kevin says "i always trust you, and i always end up screwed". dean just drops it. very ironic, as he does indeed end up screwed and does only a few minutes later, which 100% could have been avoided if dean had told him what was going on. this is only in this part too. throughout the entirety of kevin being an active/prevalent character, they treated him so horribly. i mean, they kept him locked up in some random place way longer than they needed to when they had access the men of letters bunker and could have kept him and his mother there safely. they acted like they didn't truly care about him and only cared about his use as a prophet.

2024.05.29 07:54 TableNo4007 My Experience Working at Centerpointe (if you are considering working there)

Centerpointe is a mixed bag depending on which job you get. There are student culinary workers, front of the house (FOH), dishwashers, and Shipping & Receiving. I had the pleasure of working as FOH, but I did wash dishes and put away shipments when we were short staffed and I’ve been working there long enough to know the pros and cons to every job position. Depending on the type of person you are, you will find one position better suited for you than another.
The work environment is alright, as there are different cliques but for the most part almost everyone gets along. I say almost everyone because there are (or were) a few people who by majority vote can be considered toxic/creepy/insufferable. Management is quick to take note of who these people are and depending on the severity of their actions, they get written up or if the case is bad enough HR gets involved. I’ve personally witnessed some stuff go down and heard about other incidents in the past, but for the most part it’s a tame environment. Word does get around quickly about everything that goes on in the restaurant, so there is always a lot of gossip and a little drama that does happen.
As for lower level management (Main chefs/ supervisors) they are all cool people to talk to and work with. Higher management such as the managers and the “higher-ups” are great as long as you are working and not on your phone or chatting it up with your coworkers. You might get called out for this.
The place itself can get very dirty at times especially in the back. The worst part is sometimes the trash bins fill up to the brim, not to mention the occasional leaks from the trash bags that make the back smell like a hospital during the black plague.
The food is alright depending on what they are serving at each station and the time of day. Some of the best food comes from the Global/Mongolian station during lunch and dinner. The food over at Fusion can be a little rough, like the tortillas being semi-hard tostadas, or the rice being too hard to chew on. The food is not going to be top tier gourmet, but it's better than the inedible hardtack they called pizza I used to have in high school.
The work here as I mentioned before is a mixed bag. For each job I will leave a little description.
-FOH: The work is consistent but pretty easy to handle as they can have you cleaning stations, wiping tables, and taking out trash. FOH supervisors and the student workers are great conversationalists and will help if need be. The downside is that if the place gets busy, they might have you washing dishes in the pit/trenches.
-Dishwasher: You will be working in the trenches and this place is where you will have your worst job moments but make your best friends. The humidity and the heat will test your resilience as a human being. The work is simple, either you are washing, putting dishes through a machine, or putting dishes on a cart. The upside is that time will fly and the full shift will feel like two hours, as long as you don’t pay attention to your working conditions.
-Culinary: Sometimes you will be prepping food and sometimes you will be serving it. If you have a lot of patience for customers and monotony of working on the same thing for a long time, then you would be placed here . Most of the people in culinary are cool to talk to and personally it’s a good change of pace from the usual tasks.
-Shipping & Receiving: Considered to be mostly gym rats and the know-it-all's of the entire restaurant. They are in charge of receiving deliveries and placing them where they need to be. If there are things that need to be found, 90% of the time they know exactly where it is. The downside is the downtime and the fact that they have to place deliveries in cold conditions for long amounts of time. They get a lot of downtime when they are not doing deliveries so they either help other departments with tasks or they do god knows what in god knows where.
I've got a lot of good and bad stories about this place, so if you wanna know more, let me know in the comments.

2024.05.29 07:49 Man32945273 Overthinking the realisticness of a thieves guild

I've been thinking a lot about thieves guilds and how they could realistically exist/stay relevant but I'm not sure they can in a general form. I mean of course there's always special circumstances but I feel like most thieves guild in the form and style that we think of (as like a large gathering and support network for thieves, potentially with lots of power and influence over their city/area) would not be able to exist.
This is more of a messy word vomit and less of a structured and clear argument so uhh be warned.

Thieves guilds are inherently parasitic

The main income source for this type of guild is theft and theft adjacent activities (fencing, etc). That is the thieves guild survives off of stealing from others. And this severely limits their growth. If they steal too much they'll hamper economic growth, if they rob a specific highway too much then merchants will either go out of business or just stop using that highway. If they rob shopkeepers too much then they will also either go out of business or just decide to move away to another city to set up shop.
After a certain size/influence in comparison to their hosts, theft stops becoming that viable of an income stream. Now the guild could survive by moving into other criminal activities like smuggling, drugs, prostitution, protection rackets, etc. But by doing this imo the organisation would turn into a mafia and no longer be a thieves guild.
Without good growth prospects or economies of scales then means that:

Thieves guilds struggle to maintain relevancy vs independent thieves

The draw of a thieves guild is established and shared resources. While an independent thief might have to try find reliable and trust worthy fences for themselves, a dangerous task that could get them reported and imprisoned, a thieves guild could use their larger size to maintain acquire and maintain fences through bribery, intimidation, and other means. They'd also have the resources to protect the fences, maybe like station a guard outside the fences business to warn and protect against rivals or city guards. Meanwhile an independent thief might be in big trouble if suddenly their one fence disappears and now suddenly they have to hold onto stolen goods and pray no one searches their house. This also applies to other theft related services and infrastructure such as routes out of the city (both for stolen goods and escaping thieves), safe houses (for thieves to lay low or to hide stolen goods), doctors who won't ask questions, general criminal friendly services like bars where you won't get arrested after someone notices you're wanted.
The downsides of a thieves guild is that it becomes a single point of failure, and a big target for the authorities. If anything gets compromised, like membership lists or safehouses, you could see a lot of arrests. Now an independent thief might also have their info or safehouses or other assets get compromised but its arguably less likely since the authorities would have more resources trying to stop the bigger thieves guild stealing tons of gold per day vs that one random thief whos stealing a lot less.
And then as mentioned in the previous section, the inherent parasitic nature of thieves guilds means that it would actually struggle imo to bring in enough income to provide all these services without unsustainably dampening the economic health of the city. If the city was extremely big and wealthy then maybe a large style guild could exist sustainably but the guild would almost always inevitably be wiped out. It could never exist with enough influence and resources to hold off the power of the state without stealing so much that the host city is destroyed economically. (I guess there would be exceptions as I stated above. Maybe the thieves guild is a proxy funded by a rival city so it doesn't need to make all its income via theft, maybe the city is incredibly distracted through war or civil unrest or some other calamity that it can't dedicate the resources to fighting the guild).
And i think i got a bit off track in this section, but the point is a guild would provide services for likely a membership fee, while also coming with increased scrutiny by the authorities, and generally it won't be worth it to independent thieves. The increased scrutiny of thieves guild members would make membership a bad idea unless the guild was able to protect you from the law, which it can't unless there's exceptional circumstances. So its better to do things yourself and hope that you have so low of an economic impact on the state that they don't care enough to try and investigate and arrest you the same way they would do to a thieves guild.
Enforcing membership (if you steal in guild territory without being a member, we'll kill you) would also not work since it would require so much resources to reliably and credibly identify and deal with thieves that it would become impossible. Like the state itself cannot enforce their no theft laws, so there's no way the thieves guild could enforce no theft except for members unless the guild was somehow more powerful then the state (which to reiterate is impossible under normal circumstances cuz it would mean that economic activity is being hampered so much that it either has or is about to collapse).

Conclusion

Yeah this post ended up being a bit of a mess. But to reiterate my main points, a standard thieves guild as many would imagine, with their monopoly on theft and their extreme resources and influence that rival that of the state, would find it very difficult to exist since they'll either be too small and offer too little services for people to want to join or so big that either their host city will soon collapse and take down the guild with it, or the authorities are on the verge of stamping them out.
