Contradictory accounts of Socrates make a reconstruction of his philosophy nearly impossible, a situation known as the Socratic problem. Socrates was a polarizing figure in Athenian society. In 399 BC, he was accused of impiety and corrupting the youth. After a trial that lasted a day, he was sentenced to death. He spent his last day in prison, refusing offers to help him escape.
There were four charges that were brought against Socrates. They were that he argued the weaker claim over the stronger claim, that he argue the physical over the metaphysical, that he was against the gods and that he was corrupting the youth.

The Last Moments of Maegor’s Reign, losing against a misogynistic society led by petty and ambitious nobles and against the Faith of the Seven, a religion that enforces gender roles and inequality between men and women.

By 48 AC Maegor's tyranny could no longer be borne by the realm. At Storm's End Aenys I's last surviving son, Prince Jaehaerys, put forth his claim to the throne, supported by Lord Rogar Baratheon, who was named Protector of the Realm and Hand of the King by the prince. Jaehaerys had two dragons on his side, his own mount Vermithor and his sister's mount Silverwing, against Maegor's Balerion. Learning of her brother's claim, Queen Rhaena Targaryen fled from Maegor in the night, escaping on her dragon Dreamfyre with the Valyrian blade Blackfyre, and her daughter, Princess Aerea, adding a third dragon to her brothers cause. Lord Edwell Celtigar resigned his position as Hand and returned to Claw Isle and Grand Maester Benifer secretly escaped on a ship to Pentos. Ser Olyver Bracken and Ser Raymund Mallery, two of Maegor's Kingsguard, also deserted him. Lord Daemon Velaryon, the admiral of the royal fleet, was the first of the great lords to forsake Maegor, taking the royal fleet with him, and many other lords followed his example. Owen Bush was a knight of the Kingsguard during the reign of King Maegor I Targaryen. When Maegor suspected Queen Tyanna of the Tower of betrayal, he had Owen and his sworn brother, Ser Maladon Moore, bring her to the dungeons, where she confessed.
Maegor the Cruel gradually lost political support, resulting in a rival threat in his nephew, Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen. Two of his Kingsguard defected to Jaehaerys, and Maegor lost a third guard when Owen was found dead outside a brothel in 48 AC, his member cut off and stuffed in his mouth.
Maladon Moore was a knight from House Moore and a member of the Kingsguard during the reign of King Maegor I Targaryen. When the king suspected Queen Tyanna of the Tower of treason, Maladon and Owen were dispatched to seize the queen and deliver her to the dungeons, where Maegor was said to have slain her while Maladon was present.
After Maegor died in 48 AC and his nephew King Jaehaerys I Targaryen took the Iron Throne, Maladon was accused of being involved in the death of Queen Ceryse, allegedly restraining her when Ser Owen accidentally killed her. Maladon denied these charges, insisting she died of "shrewishness". While the charges were never proven, Maladon lost his head for his involvement in Queen Tyanna's death, of which he was guilty.
When Queen Tyanna of the Tower admitted to poisoning Queen Alys Harroway during her pregnancy, Tyanna promised the same would happen to Elinor. Tyanna was proven correct when Elinor gave birth to a stillborn abomination said to have been born eyeless and with small wings. Elinor was one of the two wives who survived the king, the other being Queen Rhaena Targaryen.
After King Maegor's death, Lord Daemon Velaryon proposed that King Jaehaerys I Targaryen marry Queen Elinor to reconcile with Maegor's supporters when a bride was being considered for the king, but nothing came of the proposal. After Jaehaerys's ascent, Elinor departed King's Landing dressed in the robes of a penitent. She visited her two elder sons at the Eyrie and Highgarden before retiring to her father's seat at the Three Towers with her youngest son.
Later, King Jaehaerys commanded Elinor to go forth and spread his Doctrine of Exceptionalism to the peoples of the Seven Kingdoms, as well as the goodness of Jaehaerys and Alysanne, becoming one of the Seven Speakers. Her queenly raiment became shabbier and more threadbare each day, and she eventually gave up all claims to nobility, becoming Mother Elinor at the great motherhouse in Lannisport.
House Rosby was one of the first houses to yield peacefully to House Targaryen during Aegon's Conquest, surrendering to Rhaenys Targaryen and Meraxes. The Rosby lands became part of the crownlands surrounding King's Landing. Lord Jon Rosby was named Warden of the Sands by King Aegon I Targaryen during the First Dornish War, but Jon was killed in the Defenestration of Sunspear.
Ser Rayford Rosby defended King Maegor I Targaryen during his trial of seven, but Rayford was slain during the fighting. Lord Rosby remained loyal to the king even as his downfall became certain, and was one of the last to see the king alive. In the chaos that followed the discovery of Maegor's body, Lord Rosby drank a cup of hemlock to join his king in death. His young son received forgiveness from King Jaehaerys I Targaryen at Dragonstone.
In 47 AC, King Maegor was dealing with the issue of his lack of heirs, despite having already married three women. Lord Daemon Velaryon, Rhaena's uncle and a member of Maegor's small council, advised Maegor to wed Rhaena, to unite their claims and prevent new rebellions, and to gain her as a hostage against any potential schemes of Dowager Queen Alyssa. Later that year, Maegor summoned Rhaena to King's Landing, and she did not defy him. At the Red Keep, Maegor married Rhaena in a triple ceremony, together with Elinor Costayne and Jeyne Westerling. As the three women were all widows of men Maegor had killed, they became known as the "Black Brides". Immediately following the wedding, Maegor declared Rhaena's elder daughter Aerea as his heir until he had sons of his own, while disinheriting Rhaena's youngest brother Jaehaerys in the same decree.
After Maegor’s death, discussion arose as to who had the better claim to the Iron Throne. There were some who suggested that Rhaena's claim, as the firstborn child of King Aenys I Targaryen and Queen Alyssa Velaryon, was the strongest. Her gender argued against her, however, and Rhaena herself had come to loathe King's Landing and its court. The claims of her daughters were argued for as well. If Maegor was to be considered a usurper, the true king would have been Rhaena's first husband, Aegon, who had claimed the throne before Jaehaerys had. As such, some suggested the throne should pass to one of his daughters by Rhaena, Aerea or Rhaella.
As time passed, Rhaena began to resent the fact that her claim to the throne, and that of her daughters, had been dismissed in favor of Jaehaerys, to whom she began to refer as "my baby brother". In addition, Rhaena begrudged her mother for promoting Jaehaerys's claim over her own.
Ser Walton Towers was granted Harrenhal by King Maegor I Targaryen in 44 AC after winning a melee in Lord Harroway's Town, but Walton died soon after from his wounds. Harrenhal thus passed to his eldest son. Lord Jordan remained loyal to Maegor during the king's wars, and Lord Rosby were the last to see the king alive before Maegor's death on the Iron Throne. Along with Lords Darklyn and Staunton, Jordan yielded the Red Keep to Prince Jaehaerys, Princess Rhaena, and Princess Alysanne Targaryen. The three lords were sent to the black cells, but were eventually pardoned by King Jaehaerys I after surrendering some of their land.
Jordan eventually died of a chest congestion. Harrenhal passed to Jordan's last surviving son, Maegor Towers, as Jordan's older sons had all died fighting for King Maegor.
Maegor's father, Lord Jordan Towers, was one of the last lords of the Seven Kingdoms who remained loyal to King Maegor I Targaryen. All of Jordan's sons died fighting in the king's wars, with the exception of young Maegor.
Maegor became Lord Towers after the death of his father due to a chest congestion. When King Jaehaerys I Targaryen began a royal progress in 53 AC to celebrate the new year, his first stop was to see the new Lord of Harrenhal, then only nine years of age.
Maegor was an impoverished lord who resided in the Tower of Dread with only a cook and three men-at-arms. Since the rest of Harrenhal was empty, King Jaehaerys settled his widowed sister, Rhaena Targaryen, in the Widow's Tower in 56 AC. Maegor and Rhaena eventually became friends, and she cared for his servants after Maegor passed away in 61 AC. Harrenhal was granted to House Strong after Rhaena passed away in 73 AC.
Maegor was sickly and poor.

Socrates Feared Democracies Would Elect Demagogues. The term arose in Greece in the fifth century BCE, right around Socrates's time, and is often used negatively. Socrates himself was extremely worried that the democratic format would give rise to a demagoguery.
Demagogues are political leaders who seek support by appealing to the desires and prejudices of ordinary people rather than by using rational argument.
Modern demagogues include Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and Joseph McCarthy, all of whom built mass followings the same way that Cleon did: by exciting the passions of the masses against customs and norms of the aristocratic elites of their times.

This is why Maegor and Socrates died. They challenged authority and lost. They were silenced by the powerful lords and by the elected council of Athens whom were given power by the common people.

Jeyne was married to Lord Alyn Tarbeck. She was widowed when Alyn died during the Battle Beneath the Gods Eye in 43 AC. Jeyne was pregnant when her husband died, and gave him a posthumous son a few months later.

In 47 AC, Jeyne was being courted by a younger son of Lyman Lannister, the Lord of Casterly Rock, when King Maegor I Targaryen sent for her to be wed to him. Maegor, joyful, showered both his wives with gifts and honors, and granted new lands and offices to their fathers, brothers, and uncles. Unfortunately, Jeyne's labor began three months early, and she gave birth to a stillborn child, monstrous, lacking arms and legs but possessing both male and female genitalia. Jeyne herself died soon after.

In 48 AC, Tyanna of the Tower confessed to having poisoned Jeyne's child in the womb.

Maegor had sent the young son of his fourth wife (Jeyne Westerling) as a ward(hostage) to House Lannister. Then he sent the two eldest sons of his sixth wife (Elinor Costayne) as wards(hostages) to House Tyrell and House Arryn. When the great houses rebelled, Lord Daemon Velaryon, the brother of Alyssa Velaryon, escaped with the Royal Fleet and left King’s Landing.
Maegor called his banners to fight against the threat but they were too few and Elinor Costayne begged him to surrender to save her two eldest sons and the son of the long deceased Jeyne Westerling. He banned her from the council room and refused to surrender and his lords and him and Rhaena made battle plans well into the night.
At the end of the war council, Maegor dismissed everyone and stayed alone in the throne room to brood.
The following morning, Elinor Costayne found the King dead, his wrists slashed and throat impaled on the back of the Iron Throne.
Lord Rosby was one of the last people to see his king alive and drank a cup of hemlock to follow him in death.
Lord Jordan Towers named his last son Maegor and died of a chest conjection after Jaehaerys’ ascension to the Throne.
Elinor Costayne left King’s Landing while donning the clothes of a penitent and eventually renounced all claims to nobility and became the owner of a Motherhouse in Lannisport.
Ser Maladon Moore was executed for his involvement in Queen Tyanna’s death whom had confessed to poisoning King Maegor’s wives.
Queen Rhaena was expelled from King’s Landing and her claim to the Throne was ignored because of her gender.

So that occupying a system does not flip control to you, but just destroys the outpost, like what happens with the Khan or a crisis. This would be useful for any kind of limited empire, sovereign guardianship, inward perfection, virtual, or just a player who doesnt want to own half the galaxy but needs to destroy a big Fanatic Purifier next door. I know you can simply destroy outposts or release a vassal, but this can be tedious and offers no real benefit.
A “Scortched Space” total war would be an alternative because it could give you a reason, some sort of bonus for destroying stations instead of occupying them. Perhaps unity per system destroyed if you are some sort of defensive empire, or maybe even resources from disabled stations if you are a scavenger or raiding empire. Systems you have claims on would switch like a normal total war, but unclaimed systems would become unowned. If you are on the receiving end of this type of total war, you get claims on systems lost this way (we would need a code change to allow claims on unowned systems) and rebuilding outposts in unowned systems with your claims only costs alloys, no influence. This wargoal could be available as a counterwargoal against any total war, but may require certain civics/ethics/war doctrines to unlock.
The tricky bit is what to do with populated planets. You can of course just destroy them, but that would need to take time, perhaps an occupation type that begins purging pops- the exact nature of which depends on your purge policy. If you are some kind of pacifist, you can set the purge type to displacement, if you are a raider maybe its just forced labor, but in either case the planet is never fully taken and doesnt contribute to empire size while purging. If the planet is retaken, the purge stops and the outpost reappears just as happens if you stop a crisis before it can destroy a planet. If peace is declared and the system is not retaken, purging finishes instantly to decolonize the planet, and you get a lump sum per pop depending on the purge type.
I think this would fill a missing niche in Stellaris gameplay, and could have a lot of fun side applications- it could be used by the marauder raiding fleets for example as a way to make them be more of a threat, as well as for player despoiler empires that just want to have more of a raiding but not conquering playstyle. You could even have a positive version from something like the Genesis Guides civic, where populated planets become pre-ftl societies that if left alone will themselves eventually emerge and reclaim the space. Maybe the Galactic Council could create a "Neutral Zone" such that building in any system deoccupied this way is a violation of Galactic Law and would get you sanctions. All kinds of good alternatives to the standard blob larger and larger play style.

One more for tonight, from September 2023.

It was a place that was nowhere. Limbo, or outside reality, outside the universe... I'm not sure. I had been summoned there to be prepared for something, transformed. She spoke of unsettling things that I would have to brace for, like taking on even more on my own, and something happening with my mum. I imagine, and hope, that was my overwhelmed, exhausted thoughts manifesting themselves. But there was more she wasn't telling me, my life's issues seemed to be a topic of distraction.
There were multiple levels of... Training? Education? that you went through when you were summoned to this place. You had a teaching guide that had some sort of deity-like rank and power, and were guided through the lessons. My guide seemed to be the head of this place, or one of them, and took a particular fondness to me. She had this entrancing motherly warmth that made you want to trust everything she said, even though something always seemed just a bit off. She took me on a tour of this modern facility that simply existed in the Nothingness, inexplicably having a few large windows that looked out into the inky blackness. She explained the place without really explaining anything at all, vaguely skirting over summoned souls, purposes, and some god's duty and will that made it all happen.
Eventually we came to a point on the tour that she had me sit in with some level 2s that were about to graduate to level 3s. They were completing some kind of defensive sparring exercise (I didn't really understand, but it all seemed impressive.) They were excited to see a newcomer come watch them, and came over to tell me about who they were. Two girls and a guy, all pretty young, but I think the place we were in may de-age you. The bantered about their strengths, about the challenges they had, teased each other, it was clear they were a close group of friends. One of them, a bigger girl, seemed a bit on edge though.
She kept trying to interject that something seemed wrong, or off, but before she was able to get a word in edgewise, they were called to the advancement ceremony.
It was small, not super grand, mostly filled with chatter from their guide about their successes. I was asking questions quietly to my own guide, having a quiet conversation until she quite suddenly stopped talking, stood up, and walked to the ceremony area. I watched with the few others that had gathered.
She made a rather ordinary, congratulatory speech, before having the two girls step forward. After some remarks on their companionship and teamwork, she suddenly, swiftly waved an arm, and cast something utterly shocking. A terrible, distorted scream came from the girls, tapering off into a gurgle. Gasps, unsettled chatter, and quiet-shouts echoed through the gathered voices: she had, without a word, forcibly merged the two girls into one person. They looked confused, frightened, and horrified, not able to listen to her as she addressed them with a new combined name, attempting to give them their next instructions. The boy from the group spoke suddenly behind me: "I knew she couldn't be trusted. She tricked us all."
My alarm rang shortly after this.

some thoughts about the new Shadow of the Erd tree story trailer...
== in the story trailer at 0:40, everyone is saying that this is mostly the foundation of the Erd tree because of the piled up bodies in that scene and we know that the Erd tree roots contains of dead bodies,, to which i don't disagree. but could this also be like a gateway to the lands between? the way the sky is dark and gloomy on both sides and there is this twilight beyond this opening in the middle,, as if it is a different world, a different land in "between" the shadow lands around it.
== also in the story trailer between 0:53 and 1:12, the way the wicker men are moving and wreaking havoc looks so similar to the rumbling from Attack on Titan, could this scene be inspired by it? or maybe the whole design of the wicker men is not only inspired by.. wicker men, but also other ideas, one of them is the colossal titans from Attack on titan?
== again, in the story trailer at 2:13, this scene is showing st. Trina (mostly her) drowning. which is very similar to the scene from the ending of the movie "angel's egg", for those who don't know it or those who do, if you go check the movie at 59:25, in that scene the main character, the girl is drowning and turning into a woman. these two scenes are maybe not identical, but i think that the drowning scene of st. Trina shown in the trailer was inspired by the drowning scene of the girl in Angel's egg.
== hot take/theory,, Miquella influenced queen Marika to break the elden ring, either directly by bewitching her, or indirectly by being the real mastermind behind the night of the black knifes, that caused her to break it as a result. which leads me to believe that Miquella is actually the mastermind behind all the events that took place in elden ring, that everything that happened was according to his plan. from the stealing of the rune of death from Maliketh, the night of the black knives and the breaking of the elden ring then the shattering wars, even being kidnapped by Mohg. bringing back the tarnished to the lands between, helping and guiding them indirectly through Melina and other means in their journey to become elden lord or else. all to rid the world of the greater will and the influence of the outer gods and cure the afflictions caused by them, and to bring back death to the world. either because he is secretly ambitious to ascend to godhood, or only because he sees no other way he can really help the low and the meek and those without grace. and this theory can work in both cases, whether Miquella is really kind and wants good for the land between even if he would sacrifice himself, or he is actually evil and only cares about his own best interest no matter who or what he will sacrifice to serve his goals. maybe thats why, he is the most fearsome Empyrean of all.
== am i the only one who thinks that Messmer is a lord of the Frenzied flame? i know that i 'm 99.99% wrong about this, but hear me out..
-- first, i know that it is widely believed that Messmer at some point has partaken in dragon Communion because of how his right eye looks and his attire in general, or that he is into blasphemy and stuff like Rykard because o the snakes he is carrying, but even if that is the case, who said that you can't do both, why can't you partake in dragon communion then later on be influenced by the frenzied flame? who said that snakes are only related to blasphemy and nothing else? especially, that Messmer's snakes look nothing at all like the god devouring snake. why can't they be related to the frenzied flame?
-- second, the way the "snake flames" in the story trailer at 1:08 are moving is very similar to some of the frenzied flame incantations, specifically "unendurable frenzy" and "the flame of frenzy". now i know that they don't look or move exactly the same, but considering that we use the frenzied flame incantations on enemies that are usually on the same ground level like us and significantly close to us, unlike Messmer who is standing on a cliff and using these flames on the far below battle field, so the flames have more time an distance to dance around like snakes. and who knows, we are getting new weapons and incantations in the dlc, so these snake like flames can be a new frenzied flame incantation.
-- third, the frenzied flame sigil has three main heads, a short one on the left that is split into three , the biggest one of them is leaning to the right, a long one in the middle leaning to the left and another short one on the right that is split into two smaller heads, the left one is leaning left and the right one is leaning right. now if we look at the flame symbol on Messmer's sigil, it also contains of three main heads, a short one on the left that is leaning to the right, a long one in the middle leaning to the left and another short one on the right that is split into two smaller heads, the left one is leaning left and the right one is leaning right. considering the different art styles that are used to draw the frenzied flame sigil and flame symbol on Messmer's sigil that makes them look different, they are actually very similar to each other, if not the same.
-- forth, Melina.. now this one is based on the sole assumption that the woman who is sitting in the battlefield and holding a spear in the story trailer at 1:13 is indeed Melina. so, one of the things that always poked my interest about Melina was her relation to the frenzied flame. i have always wondered.. out of all the outer gods, why is it the frenzied flame in particular that Melina seemed to be afraid of and hate so much? to me it always felt more than just "it's pure chaos and it will make the lands lifeless", she didn't just know what the frenzied flame can do, but to her, it was much more personal than that, she have seen it before, she was affected by it, she lost everything and everyone she held dear to it. and there,, she sat on the battlefield amidst the chaos and destruction, defeated, holding the spear that was left to her by her mother, the gloom eyed queen. watching the frenzied flame, Messmer's flame burning everything around her, then she herself was burned by it. then somehow and for some reason, she was spared or brought back to life, and she was branded with a tattoo of the three fingers over her right eye, to add insult to injury, to summarize this last point.. the woman in the battlefield for sure hates Messmer and his flame, assuming that this woman is Melina, and we know already how much Melina hates the frenzied flame, then it is not much of a stretch to conclude that messmer's flame is the frenzied flame.
anyways, these were some thoughts that i had since the story trailer came out. as i said they are mostly incorrect, but thank you all the same if you are here and you read the whole thing.

Hello? How do I start this? This is my first time posting on a basic r4r subreddit. I’m married (yes, young, can’t do anything about it now), so I’ve stuck to spaces particularly for affairs for the most part. Something I have seriously, to a detriment, missed in those spaces is the sheer lack of emotional availability in partners. I appreciate that it’s hard finding my ideal given my circumstance(s) but perhaps broadening my horizons here will help.
I’m looking for a genuine relationship, which can mean many things, right? I’m not opposed to a good friend I talk with every now and then, but I really crave what I know I am missing. Someone I can be fully open and honest with. Someone to “hold” me when I need it. Someone who is not going to dip or freak out when my inevitable anxiety hits and I’m not nice for two seconds. Someone who I know I can always come back to. Someone who becomes my safe space. Someone who I invest in as much as they invest in me. It’s such a deep need, and I feel very vulnerable and silly posting it for all the internet to see. But being lonely in my own home is something I can’t do anymore.
Despite my posting, I have zero interest in changing my “real life” relationship status. It’s something I think about a lot, fantasize about even, but it’s not in the cards right now.
I hesitate to share much about myself here, just because I don’t want to be overly recognizable to those I’ve talked to in the past, but I think it is important to outline a few guides:

• As hinted at, I’m not picky about your relationship status. However, I except you to be discreet in talking to me. Despite wanting a relationship, know that it will not be open.
  
• I’m not necessarily looking for something exclusive, but I’m not opposed to something becoming that serious either.

FIRST HOUSE
While the words; are a manner of speech there might be less confusion if they were replaced with "present": The first house shows how we present as an individual. This presentation includes attitude, physical health, demeanor and appearance, among other things.
The first house is much more than how we strike out as an individual. It can actually show a ‘wait and see attitude’. If a passive sign is on the ascendant or the ascendant ruler in a passive sign there will be less ‘striking out’ and more withdrawal or cautious approach to life.
With other factors such as the house location of its ruler and aspects to the ascendant, the first house shows temperament style and general attitude to life, which may be nothing akin to Mars or Aries.
The odds are only one in twelve that the sign on the ascendant will be Aries and the wide scope of other possible expressions cannot all be described as Arian or Martian.
Neither should we restrict the red planet to its daytime domicile of Aries. It is also the nocturnal ruler of Scorpio although this is rarely considered or understood.
Associating Mars with the first house also ignores the other two planets which have a connection to this house.
The first is Mercury, which has its joy in the first house. The joys of the planets is a worthwhile study of its own.
Mercury has a natural association with the brain and head and this correlates well with the association of the first house with the head.
Mercury is also associated with speech and communication.
Mars has no natural association with the head or brain, unless you are thinking of using your head as a battering ram!
In the system of planetary joys Mars is placed in the sixth house of injuries and sickness, a place where it is at home.
The first house straddles the boundary between day and night which is an apt fit for adaptable Mercury as the go-between.
Saturn also has a first house association because this is where the soul is entrapped within the body as it incarnates. Saturn is the natural ruler of doorways and the first house is the soul’s doorway into physical life. The eighth house of death is the exit doorway, also associated with Saturn.
SECOND HOUSE:
Yes Taurus is about stability and physical comforts and pleasure, but has little to do with money itself. Venus, the planet which rules Taurus, is about the comforts that money can buy, the adornments and beautiful things. But money itself is represented by Mercury, the natural ruler of exchange and financial dealings. Mercury does the buying and Venus does the enjoying. Venus does not represent money; that is Mercury’s domain.
Jupiter the planet of wealth and prosperity, has a natural association with the second house. In the Chaldean order of the planets Jupiter follows Saturn. Saturn is associated with the first house, Jupiter with the second house.
THIRD HOUSE:
It is understandable that, at first glance, the third house would seem to have an association with Gemini and Mercury.
However in previous generations it was clearly understood that the third house was the house of the "goddess", and the Moon had a special relationship with this house.
In horary astrology the Moon is frequently seen as conveying messages between other planets in its role as ‘the translator of light’. Among the seven classical planets it is the fastest moving body, linking planets as it aspects one and then to another. This sequential linking is very significant in questions about communication, linking people together, or the movement of goods. In this latter respect it also has an association with transport.
FOURTH HOUSE:
Historically the 4th house is associated with foundations and property, the land, deep roots, mines and wealth from under the ground.
Compare these fixed traits to that most fluid and movable of planets: the Moon. This is not a good fit. The changeable Moon is much better suited to the busy comings and goings of the 3rd house.
In the ancient model of the “4 Ages of Man” the IC is associated with the winter of our lives. Yet in the northern hemisphere where Western astrology arose the Sun passes through Cancer at the height of summer. Neither is the 4th house a good fit for Cancer.
Historically the 4th house is associated with the father, not the mother.
FIFTH HOUSE:
The Sun is the supreme ‘Commander-in-Chief’, the symbol of might and mastery, power, truth, light and enlightenment. The superior planets genuflect and step backwards in retrograde motion when they come face to face in opposition with the Sun, and all the planets disappear in his blinding light when in conjunction with the Sun.
The fifth house is the house of fun and frivolity, parties pleasure and entertainment. In a sense this is the most superficial of houses and is in no way deserving as the home of the Lord of the Heavens.
The Sun represents so much more than parties, children, pleasure and sporting games. The importance of these activities pales into insignificance when faced with the majesty of his presence. In many religions and spiritual systems the image of god or the force which guides the universe has a solar representation.
To suggest that the Sun is restricted to the rulership of the house of fun and creativity is to diminish his great power and demonstrates a profound misunderstanding of his role in the heavens and in astrological interpretation.
In the diagram above describing the joys of the planets we see that the Sun rejoices in the ninth house, the house of higher learning, spirituality, and the search for the ultimate meaning of life. The joys of the planets describe places where planets are most comfortable and ‘feel at home’. The Sun is much more comfortable than in the ninth house of spirituality than in the fifth house of frivolity.
Neither is Leo a good fit for the fifth house as it is regarded as a barren sign because of its dryness. The 5th has long been known as the house of sex procreation and children. In horary astrology in questions of fertility and in electional astrology when choosing a suitable time for conception Leo on the ascendant or on the fifth house cusp is generally avoided because of its association with infertility and sterility.
To link the sign associated with barrenness with the house associated with fertility and creativity shows a misunderstanding of basic astrological principles.
SIXTH HOUSE:
Confusions relating to the meaning of the sixth house are worthy of an article on its own.
The association with work in the sense of career or profession can be attributed to a misreading of Lilly where he refers to the 6th house as the house of service. He was actually referring to servitude and servants.
The modern equivalent are the working poor doing menial jobs, in the service of another. There has never been, at least until recent times, a sense that the 6th house is associated with anything resembling a career. Historically this is, among other meanings, the house of slaves. While perhaps there are few real slaves in the Western world, the unskilled worker going from job to job is a close equivalent. These workers are typically more lacking in skills, rather than being skilled.
Going back to the objection mentioned above that Virgo is focused I am not sure how focus is a noteworthy trait of the sixth house, or even that Virgo is especially focused. Virgo is after all a double-bodied sign. Scorpio Aries and Capricorn also have some claim to being focused.
It is more common for people to confuse the sixth house with Virgo because of Virgo’s association with health. However the sixth house is not the house of health; that honour belongs to the first house. The sixth house is the house of ill-health and also injuries, the opposite of health. The preoccupation with exercise and diet typically associated with Virgo is better explained by the combination of the dry earth qualities of Virgo when combined with its discerning ruler: Mercury.
It is the first house which is the house of life and health and vitality. Mercury rejoices in this house and is much more comfortable here than in the sixth house of sickness and injuries.
It is Mars which rejoices in the sixth house. It is of course the minor malefic and is well suited to the house where the slings and arrows of outrageous misfortune beset us all from time to time. Incidentally in mundane astrology the sixth house is associated with the military which has an obvious connection with Mars.
SEVENTH HOUSE:
Yes the seventh house is about relationships of all types. As well as amorous relationships and contractual business type relationships, also included are adversarial relationships with open enemies and those involving a sporting or other type of contest.
Relationships involving open conflict can hardly be confused with the graciousness associated with Libra or the pleasantness associated with Venus. These relationships could better be described as Martian. As the enemy rides over hill towards you, rifle at the ready with bayonet attached, Venus is nowhere to be seen. These situations are better described by Mars. So should we associate Aries and Mars with the seventh house, as well as Libra and Venus? The logic is similar. It should not be ignored that the seventh house is as much about engagement with the enemy as it is with the lover or friend.
The seventh house is about ‘the other’ we engage with, for whatever reason, whether it be the terrorist or the lover, the violent bully or the loving spouse. The relationships associated with the seventh house can be associated with love or hate. The seventh house is primarily about the people we engage with, and the type of engagement cannot be restricted to just Venus or Libra. The planet which usually best describes the type of engagement is the one ruling the sign on the seventh house cusp or a planet conjoining the descendant.
EIGHTH HOUSE:
The confusion concerning the eighth house is connected both with the adoption of Pluto as Scorpio's modern ruler and the adoption of the '12 letter Alphabet'; system by some astrologers. In the 12 letter Alphabet, invented by Zip Dobyns, the meaning of the houses planets and signs are merged. For example the eighth house, Scorpio, and Pluto are seen to have a similar theme, referred to as an archetype. Pluto's association with transformation and regeneration and Scorpio's association with sex are both transferred to the eighth house.
However the eighth house is the house of death. While it's true that some astrologers have associated the eighth house with sex because sexual orgasm is sometimes called ‘the little death, the purpose of sex is to procreate, to bring life into the world, not death.
Previous to the modern era the eighth house was not associated with sex. This modern confusion is perpetrated by a misunderstanding of the primary functions of the houses. Sex is a fifth house matter. Death and bringing life into the world are opposite things. One should not be confused with the other.
I have often heard it said that death is only one form of transformation and somehow this justifies assigning transformation as a core meaning for the eighth house, which in turn validates Scorpio’s and Pluto’s association with the eighth house.
It is ironic that Pluto's mythical association with rape is rarely mentioned in conversations about eighth house sexual activity.
The tangled web of confusions associated with the interchange of Scorpio Pluto and the eighth house is mind boggling and really does take us a long way from the real meaning of the eighth house. Followers of the 12 Letter Alphabet system associate intimacy with the eighth house because of its new association connection with Pluto.
The core meanings of the eighth house have to do with death in the physical and real sense; fear and loss; the resources of those we engage with, and inheritance.
The eighth house is not a particular pleasant place no matter how much we might like to romanticize it or give it a positive spin. The sign on the cusp of the eighth house and the planet which rules that sign are what is relevant in any type of astrological interpretation of the 8th house.
NINTH HOUSE:
We tend to liken Jupiter to philosophy and religion and the attribution of Jupiter to the 9th House fits fairly well. (Jupiter is also the planet associated with the Ninth in the wheel of houses that begins with Saturn as the First.) The Ninth was the place of the “Sun God” in ancient astrology and was strongly associated with public religious practice; yet, like the Third, it was also associated with dreams, prophecy, and divination. The Ninth House being associated with higher education or long journeys is a later addition.
The planet in joy in the Ninth House is the Sun and, for a place that is cadent, the Ninth gets a lot of sunlight and the Sun can be happy here. It also fits well with the deification of the Sun’s power in many cosmologies and religions throughout history. It may also conform to the image of Sun as a planet of higher intellect, as the light of reason.
TENTH HOUSE:
Astrologers after my lifetime or yours will look at this affiliation with bewilderment. Archetypally mixing the House of career, reputation, and fame to Saturn and Capricorn is itself enough to throw out the entire Twelve Letter Alphabet system.
You might retort, “But it’s the place of one’s boss!” I answer that there are many kinds of bosses and they’re not all oppressive. The dimensions of leadership and mentorship – solar and not saturnine factors – are prominent Tenth House factors.
The 10th is the traditional place of one’s “action” – career, calling, fame and reputation. I include a larger sense of “vocation”, so that if you work retail by day but are a political activist or animal rights advocate otherwise, the latter would be included within your Tenth House. If a “lifestyle” includes neighborhood vigilantism, being a “survivalist”, or attending a lot of funerals, that person’s Tenth House would qualify as Saturnine.
Capricorn, as the cardinal earth sign, governed by a heavy nocturnal (feminine sign) Saturn, and the place and time of least light in the Northern Hemisphere, is completely out of place in the public and daylight-filled Tenth. Because the Tenth is place of authority, it is far closer in meaning to the Sun than the gray planet Saturn.
ELEVENTH HOUSE:
In ancient times the 11th, the “Place of the Good Spirit (or daimon)”, was a place of fortune and abundance. According to traditional sources Jupiter is in joy in the Eleventh, befitting a place that is considered so fortunate. (The Eleventh is the House opposite the 5th, the Place of Good Fortune and the joy of Venus, the other benefic.) The Eleventh House became the place of “hopes and wishes” and later the place of friendship and social groups; “hopes and wishes” is more in line with the original meaning of the Eleventh House.
Is this like the fixed air sign Aquarius? The “Water-Bearer” has a linear mental quality and a tendency to become conceptual that is not particularly like the Eleventh House in its original meanings. Aquarius is a sign of social responsibility and objective mind, and Aquarius relates well to a diurnal (masculine sign) Saturn that is a lighter Saturn than the one who governs Capricorn. However, if you confine the Eleventh House to friendships and social groups, the affiliation with the diurnal Saturn isn’t such a problem.
Things become much more confusing when astrologers mix up Aquarius with the outer planet Uranus, the planet of eccentricity, suddenness, and genius, and then try to bring in the Eleventh House. Uranus is quite different from the fixed mental “human” sign Aquarius. Uranus is rebellious, radically individualistic, and is deliberately outside convention. Aquarius, the sign opposite Leo, is humanitarian and oriented more toward groups and cultures than individuals. To bring this confusion to the Eleventh House only makes this problem worse; it obscures the original benevolent and protective quality of this house which is well demonstrated by Jupiter’s traditional association.
TWELTH HOUSE:
There are many difficulties here, and many are based on the distorted ways that the sign Pisces has been defined. But first let’s look at the Twelfth House by itself.
Like the Sixth and Eighth, the Twelfth is also disconnected to the Ascendant and is also a place about life’s difficulties. The Twelfth is a cadent house that in ancient astrology was the Place of the “Bad Spirit.” In the outer world the Twelfth is where we locate prisons, confinement in institutions, and dark hidden places. More internally, this is the place of being haunted – by previous karma, psychological “unfinished business,” and other manners of “self-doing” that come about because of what we cannot see. Psychological astrologers have looked to the Twelfth House for unacknowledged factors that may wreak havoc on one’s person and within one’s relationships. This is in keeping with the qualities of this house.
This all seems very different from the mutable watery sign Pisces that is flowing, changeable, and can develop different disguises for its personal and social roles. Pisces, as a quality of mind, has a strongly intuitive nonlinear bent. Unlike the planet Neptune, however, natives with prominent Pisces placements manage to maintain their identity even if that identity is not well-defined. Both the sign Pisces and its purported ruler Neptune are a far cry from the vice grip many of have experienced when in conditions of external or internal confinement.
Jupiter, the great benefic and the traditional ruler of Pisces, is even farther away from the significations of the Twelfth House. Jupiter – especially in the feminine sign Pisces – brings intuition of possibilities that is often called “faith” or “hope”. The Twelfth, however, is where cold reality comes at us from behind often with harmful intent; it is far closer to Saturn than Jupiter. And Saturn is, of course, the “joy” of the Twelfth House.

I’ve been coming up with as many cons to America as I can think of, in order to identify what I want from living in a certain country as well as to summarize why I’m beginning to have a desire to leave. If anyone knows of countries I can possibly live in that might work based on these complaints I have, I would appreciate it!
So, here’s my ultimate list of complaints about America:

• Extremely capitalistic, to the point where corporations and owners of them don’t have any morality and only care about benefiting themselves.
• Lots of people in America live in poverty, despite it being the wealthiest nation in the world. A big reason is due to the fact that many programs are designed to keep people in poverty rather than helping them get out of it.
• Don’t even get me started on the horribly unethical treatment of animals.
• Pollution is pretty bad and most people don’t give a Frenchman’s f**k, especially people working in industries that propagate it. Oh, as well as rampant use of pesticides and plastics that inevitably enter our bodies.
• The pharmaceutical industry is way too powerful and has devastated many lives. Not to mention the fact that they’re allowed to advertise. (That’s right, our drug dealers have style!) This ties in with my next complaint:
• Rampant drug use; not only recreationally, but also with unnecessary prescriptions. And don’t get me started on doctors.
• No encouragement of free thought. Critical thinking is a thing of the past.
• Do I even have to mention the politics?
• Terrible work/life balance. Go, go, go! Now, now, now!
• Oh, you want to buy a house? Where’s your multi-million dollar bank account?
• Horrible addiction to technology and obsessive materialism. Seriously, I see kids that are glued to tablets and freak out when the parents take them away. It’s like watching a severe drug addict in withdrawal.
• I don’t know anything about economics so I could be wrong on this one but oh man, our economy isn’t doing well. (I know the rest of the world isn’t in top notch shape either, but ours doesn’t seem to be heading anywhere.)
• People either love Donald Trump more than anything or want him dead. These two groups of people are probably going to go to war someday.
• Rampant mass shootings. Other crimes too, but that’s not really a big deal anymore.
• Do I even have to mention the disgustingly unhealthy processed food? Or the rampant obesity?
• Huge lack of ambition. Americans don’t want to do anything. They want to sit on the couch, watch Netflix, and stuff their faces with chips. Don’t believe me? Just look at what happened after covid when nobody wanted to go back to work.
• Everyone gets offended at everything. Freedom of speech is done here.
• Kids are being convinced by adults that they are transgender (when in fact, they show no symptoms) and are being prescribed puberty blockers. Am I insane? I must be, since nobody else seems to care that children's bodies are being mutilated.
• Although we don’t have extremely high taxes (especially compared to other countries) our tax money goes nowhere. It’s mind boggling how inefficiently that money is used.
• You got injured? Ah, that’s too bad. Don’t worry, we’ll take care of you, this is America! We have the best medical technology in the world! Oh, and that’ll be $150,000. What’s that? You can’t afford that? Oh well… you’ll figure it out.
• Congratulations! You worked so hard to finish college and now you’ve obtained your degree! Now you can get a job and start working towards paying off that $112,000 in student loans!
• Very few people exercise. This one seems to be improving over time, but still, America is an extremely sedentary country.
• Americans are stuck up assholes and are very selfish.
• Maybe this is a post-covid thing, and maybe it’s primarily with people my age, but it seems that Americans aren’t social anymore. People don’t actually want to hang out. (Sorry, I’m busy, otherwise I totally would!)
• The entitlement that people have here, oh my gosh.
• Don’t get me started on the propaganda news.
• Excessive (and ever-increasing) homelessness. I don’t like living in a place that resembles a zombie apocalypse.
• Most Americans live paycheck to paycheck.
• Debt galore

Well, I think that’s enough for now. I don’t want to waste more time going on.
In all seriousness, I would love some recommendations on potential countries that have as few of these problems as possible, so that I can make an attempt to optimize my life. Any and all information is greatly appreciated.
